Article presents iconological interpretation of the Szczerbiec (Jagged sword) − coronation sword of the Polish kings. Original function of this sword in moment of making in XIII age, was symbol of the judiciary authority of prince − he was glasdius iustitiae − sword of justice. Ceremonial sword link to biblical interpretation of Old and New Testaments, where he is a symbol of authority of prince to performances of judgement over people. Representations on handle of this sword − letter Sigma − beginning of the word Soter − Saviour, joint with crosses: Latin and Tau, and with letters A and Ω, and with Latin inscription: + HEC* FIGURA* VALET* ADAMORCM* REGUM* ET* PRINCIPUM* IRAS* IUDICUM, also refer to this function. On handle appear also representations four Animals from vision of prophet Ezecheiel around Lamb with cross T, and four Animals of Apocalypse around Lamb with Latin cross. These representations, appearing in mediaeval art, connected with Power and Authority: vide recto of so-called Reichskreuz, illustrate right of the rulers to performances the judgement in the name of Christ and on resemblance of Christ. Warn him also before the unjust sentences. Article permits, that Szczerbiec is the sword, which in one's own symbolical level fits in West-European iconography of the Authority and Power, especially in correspondence with so-called „Theory of two swords”, and is very original in own iconological program.

The paper presents the philosophical and artistic ideas of Cyprian Norwid as they were represented in the Russian émigré newspapers published in Warsaw by Dmitri Filosofov. Filosofov, soon after his arrival in Warsaw, got interested in Norwid’s writings and drawings and found in them instructions (of social, political and anthropological nature) about ways in which émigré communities could function.

In the collection of the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, there is an Xa-type sword following Ewart Oakeshott’s classification deriving from the vicinity of Sztum. This sword is decorated on both sides with an ornament: in the form of the letter S within a circle on one side, and an equal-armed cross (cross potent) on the other. Formal features of the sword indicate its production between the mid-11th and 12th centuries, while analogies for its decorations, as well as the region where it was found, also point to the sword being dated to the first half of the 13th century.

Opis:
The article extends contemporary discussion about the Epitaph of Jan z Jeřeně and argues that these two male saints who are traditionally referred to as Bartoloměj and Tomáš don’t have to be the only interpretation here. Simultaneously it shows us the basic need to deal with the concrete objects displayed. These can essentially influence the narrative potential of the artwork. This study points out the desirable multidisciplinary approach that is being demonstrated here by an example of a type of an object (falchion) in relation to a medieval art of Central Europe.
Artykuł odnosi się do współczesnej dyskusji na temat Epitafium Jana z Jeřeně i dowodzi, że dwaj święci mężczyźni których wymienia przekaz, a których tradycyjnie identyfikuje się z Bartłomiejem i Tomaszem, nie muszą być tak identyfikowani. Jednocześnie pokazuje podstawową potrzebę radzenia sobie ze zwizualizowanymi obiektami. Ich interpretacje mogą zasadniczo wpływać na potencjał narracyjny dzieła. Artykuł wskazuje na konieczność multidyscyplinarnego podejście do tego rodzaju przekazów. Zostało to wykazane na przykładzie pewnego typu miecza (falchion) w kontekście sztuki średniowiecznej Europy Środkowej.

Opis:
The paper deals with a late medieval longsword found during recent excavations at Lutomiersk-Koziówki, Pabianice County. The slender, hexagonal blade tapering acutely towards the point was identified as a late variaton of Oakeshott’s type XVII, the smooth-surfaced, slightly elongated pommel represents type T3, while the simple guard square in cross-section with convolute both ends pertains type 1a. The carried out analyzes of organic, heavily-mineralized residues found on the weapons surface were identified as remains of a scabbard and grip fittings.The handle cladding was made of ash wood and the scabbard slats of spruce wood. The scabbard was coated with sheepskin of high quality. A piece of fabric, which was lifted from the sword’s surface, was qualified as silk and considered as coming from an attire of Italian origin. Quantative chemical composition and possible method of blade’s manufacture are also presented and discussed, as well as the conservation process, which the artifact underwent.

This paper analyses a unique single-edged sword recovered from the Scythian grave 2, barrow 2, excavated near the village of Myrne in the Kherson Region, and provides typological and chronological analyses of similar artefacts from the North Pontic region.
