    Opis:
    In this paper I develop a sketch of an overall theology that dispenses with “alternative-possibilities” freedom in favor of “actual-sequence” freedom. I hold that acting freely does not require freedom to do otherwise, and that acting freely is the freedom component of moral responsibility. Employing this analytical apparatus, I show how we can offer various important elements of a theology that employs only the notion of acting freely. I distinguish my approach from the important development of Open Theism by William Hasker. My view about God’s foreknowledge is in-between comprehensive foreknowledge and no foreknowledge (Open Theism).
    Autor w swoim artykule szkicuje obraz ogólnej teologii, która odchodzi od koncepcji wolności jako „alternatywnych możliwości” na rzecz wolności jako „aktualnej sekwencji”. Autor odróżnia swoje podejście od rozwiniętej teorii teizmu otwartego Williama Haskera. Pogląd autora na temat Bożej przedwiedzy mieści się pomiędzy ideą pełnej przedwiedzy a ideą jej całkowitego braku (teizm otwarty).

    Two Fathers of the Reformation, Martin Luther and John Calvin questioned the veneration of images. They used different arguments. Martin Luther allowed the presence of paintings in churches, while John Calvin did not. Their theology influenced Europe so strongly that even Catholicism in its ordinary sensitivity departed from the understanding of the image as an object of worship and entered the time of art. A painting ceased to be understood as a special place of presence (icon), and began to function as a work of art. Having ceased to be a medium referring to the original, it became itself an original in the artistic sense.
    Ojcowie Reformacji: Marcin Luter i Jan Kalwin zakwestionowali kult obrazu. Posługiwali się różnymi argumentami. Marcin Luter dopuszczał obecność obrazów w przestrzeni kościelnej, a Jan Kalwin – nie. Ich teologia mocno oddziałała na Europę, tak że nawet katolicyzm w swej potocznej wrażliwości odszedł od rozumienia obrazu kultycznego, a wszedł w czas sztuki. Obraz przestał być pojmowany jako szczególne miejsce obecności (ikona), a zaczął funkcjonować jako dzieło sztuki, przestał być medium odnoszącym do oryginału, ale sam stał się oryginałem w sensie artystycznym.

    Autor twierdzi, że nieśmiertelność niekoniecznie musi być aż tak zła, jak to opisuje Bernard Williams.     The author argues that immortality need not be as bad as Bernard Williams says it would be. He argues that if an immortal life were characterized by a sufficiently diverse package of experiences, appropriately distributed, there is no reason to think that one would become bored (just as there is no reason to think that one would become bored of such experiences in a finite life). He acknowledges that some pleasurable experiences would be “self-exhausting,” but he says that there are enough “repeatable pleasures” to avoid the tedium of which Bernard Williams speaks.

    Fantastyka naukowa (ang. science fiction, w skrócie – SF) jest często przedstawiana jako gatunek literacki dobrze przystosowany do spekulacji filozoficznej. SF i filozofia dzielą zainteresowanie kwestią nieśmiertelności, a ich ujęcia tego tematu można zestawić i porównać. Proponujemy tutaj zarys taksonomii różnych modeli czy wizji nieśmiertelności oferowanych przez filozofów i autorów fantastyki naukowej. Po wskazaniu istotnych rozbieżności między tymi modelami przedstawiamy sugestię, że pewne problemy oraz wątpliwości wysuwane przez pisarzy SF i filozofów wynikają z pomieszania różnych modeli. Mamy nadzieję, że te porównania pokażą wstępnie, w jakim sensie można powiedzieć, że fantastyka naukowa funkcjonuje jako dyskurs filozoficzny.
    Science fiction is often described as a literary genre well suited to philosophical speculation. SF and philosophy share a common interest in the question of immortality, and comparisons and contrasts can be made regarding their respective treatments of the theme. We propose here a sketch of a taxonomy of different models or pictures of immortality offered by philosophers and SF writers. After noting important difference in these models, we suggest that some problems and concerns expressed by philosophers and SF writers alike are the result of conflating different models. It is our hope that these comparisons provide a preliminary sense of the way SF can be said to function as philosophical discourse.

    The Soviet military mapping project was the most comprehensive cartographic endeavour of the twentieth century. The resulting maps have been commercially available to the West since at least 1993, when a Latvian business rfist oefred Soviet plans of Western cities for sale at the 16th International Cartographic Conference in Cologne, Germany. Covering the globe at a range of scales, Soviet military maps provide a fascinating - if disconcerting - view of familiar territory with a striking aesthetic. But they also provide a substantial untapped geospatial resource, often with an unparalleled level of topographic detail. This paper gives an overview of the Soviet global military mapping programme and its coverage of Poland, including the 1:25,000-scale city plan of Warsaw (printed in 1981). By illustrating the extensive topographic symbology employed at various scales of mapping, it suggests how these maps may oefr scope for regional studies and how their cartographic language can provide some solutions for addressing the ongoing challenges of mapping the globe.

    On the centenary of the birth of St. John Paul II, this article reflects on his legacy for moral theology by examining the enduring relevance of his 1993 Encyclical Veritatis Splendor. Against what some authors call the new morality, this papal document holds up the classical notion of morality as a realm in which we encounter the absolute, to the point that one may even be called upon  to lay down one’s life in martyrdom. As a figure of classical morality, the essay presents Antigone, who risked her life to honor her dead brother’s body. A different woman serves as a figure of the new morality: Mrs. Bergmeier, who is praised by some of the proponents of this approach for having committed “sacrificial” adultery in order to be reunited with her family. Examining the differences between these two accounts, the paper recalls the classical distinction between choice and intention. It is argued that the new morality has forgotten about the moment of choice, subsuming it entirely under the intention. In its teaching on the moral object and intrinsically evil acts, Veritatis Splendor defends the basic moral experience that we have a choice and that our choices matter.
    W setną rocznicę urodzin św. Jana Pawła II niniejszy artykuł podejmuje temat jego spuścizny w teologii moralnej, badając trwałą aktualność encykliki Veritatis Splendor z 1993 roku. W przeciwieństwie do tego, co niektórzy autorzy nazywają nową moralnością, encyklika ta podtrzymuje klasyczne pojęcie moralności jako sfery, w której mamy do czynienia  z absolutem, do tego stopnia, że można nawet być wezwanym  do złożenia męczeńskiej ofiary z własnego życia. Jako postać moralności klasycznej, esej przedstawia Antygonę, która ryzykowała życie, by uczcić ciało zmarłego brata. Inną kobietą która służy jako postać nowej moralności jest Pani Bergmeier, chwalona przez zwolenników tego podejścia za to, że popełniła cudzołóstwo by móc zjednoczyć się z rodziną. Analizując różnice między tymi dwoma postaciami, artykuł przypomina klasyczne rozróżnienie między wyborem a intencją oraz argumentuje, że nowa moralność zapomniała o momencie wyboru, zaliczając go całkowicie do intencji. W swoim nauczaniu na temat moralnego przedmiotu czynu i czynów z natury złych Veritatis Splendor broni podstawowego doświadczenia moralnego – tego, że mamy wybór i że nasze wybory mają znaczenie.
    Anlässlich des hundertsten Jahrestages der Geburt von Johannes Pauls II. denken wir über sein Vermächtnis in der Moraltheologie nach, indem wir die bleibende Gültigkeit der Enzyklika Veritatis splendor von 1993 untersuchen. Im Gegensatz zu dem, was einige Autoren die neue Moral nennen, hält dieses päpstliche Dokument an der klassischen Vorstellung von Moral als einer Sphäre fest, in der wir dem Absoluten begegnen, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem man sogar dazu aufgerufen werden kann, sein Leben im Martyrium hinzugeben. Als eine Figur der klassischen Moral stellt der Aufsatz Antigone vor, die ihr Leben riskierte, um die Leiche ihres toten Bruders zu ehren. Eine weitere Frau dient als Figur einer neuen Moral: Frau Bergmeier, die von den Befürwortern dieses Ansatzes dafür gelobt wird, dass sie Ehebruch begangen hat, um mit ihrer Familie wieder vereint zu werden. Der Artikel analysiert die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Beziehungen und erinnert an die klassische Unterscheidung zwischen Wahl und Absicht. Es wird argumentiert, dass die neue Moral den Moment der Entscheidung vergessen hat, da sie die Absicht in den Vordergrund stellt. In seiner Lehre über das moralische Handlungsobjekt und die in sich bösen Taten verteidigt der Papst in Veritatis splendor die grundlegende moralische Erfahrung, dass wir eine Wahl haben, und dass unsere Entscheidungen von Bedeutung sind.

    Katolicki obraz Marcina Lutra na przestrzeni wieków ewoluował od zdecydowanie negatywnego w czasie reformacji i w wiekach następnych, poprzez próby teologicznie i historycznie pogłębionych analiz inspirowanych ruchem ekumenicznym, aż po współczesną akceptację wielu jego teologicznych postulatów. Współczesne kierunki rzymskokatolickiego myślenia o Lutrze dobrze streszczają historycznie wyważone i dogmatycznie pogłębione opinie ostatnich papieży: Jana Pawła II, Benedykta XVI i Franciszka. Idąc za tekstami uzgodnień Komisji luterańsko-katolickiej na forum światowym, ekumenicznie otwarci papieże potrafią dostrzec w Marcinie Lutrze człowieka głęboko religijnego, świadka Ewangelii, którego myśl teologiczna nie utraciła swej aktualności i jest wyzwaniem dla współczesnego zsekularyzowanego świata.  
    The Catholic image of  Martin Luther in the course of the centuries evolved from the literally  negative one during the time of the Reformation and the centuries that followed, through the theological attempts and historically in-depth analyses inspired by the ecumenical movement up to contemporary acceptance of several theological postulates. Contemporary movements of Roman-Catholic thinking of Luther well summarize historically vulnerable and dogmatically deepened opinions of the recent popes: John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. Following the agreement texts of the Lutheran-Catholic Commission at the world forum, ecumenically open popes can find out in Martin Luther a profoundly religious man, the witness of the Gospel whose theological thought is still relevant and a challenge for the presently secularized world.
    Das katholische Bild von Martin Luther veränderte sich von einem äußerst negativen in der Zeit der Reformation durch theologisch und historisch vertiefte Versuche von Analysen, angeregt durch die ökumenische Bewegung, bis zur heutigen Akzeptanz vieler seiner theologischen Forderungen. Die gegenwärtigen Tendenzen des römisch-katholischen Denkens über Luther werden am besten durch die historisch sowie dogmatisch fundierten Aussagen der letzten Päpste zusammengefast: Johannes Paul II., Benedikt XVI. und Franziskus. Im Geiste der Konvergenzen der Katholisch-Lutherischen Dialogkommission auf der Weltebene sehen diese ökumenisch aufgeschlossenen Päpste in Martin Luther einen tief religiösen Menschen und einen Zeugen des Evangeliums, dessen theologisches Denken nach wie vor aktuell bleibt und eine Herausforderung an die säkularisierte Welt von heute ist.

    German-language regionalist literature was home to the Reformation on individual figures in the different German landscapes and in this way transformed them into a Christian-German movement. The article draws from the conception and poetic language of the cultural-historical home romance E. v. Maltzahn's Ilsabe (1897), its topicality for coping with the crisis and upheaval situation in German society around and after 1900.
    Niemieckojęzyczna literatura ojczyźniana była domem reformacji poszczególnych postaci z różnych niemieckich krajobrazów i w ten sposób przekształciła je w ruch chrześcijańsko-niemiecki. Artykuł nakreśla na podstawie koncepcji i poetyckiego języka kulturalno-historycznej powieści E. v. „Ilsabe” Maltzahn (1897), jej aktualność w radzeniu sobie z kryzysem i sytuacją wstrząsów w społeczeństwie niemieckim około 1900 r. i później.

    In the frame of stochastic filtering for nonlinear (discrete-time) dynamic systems, the unscented transformation plays a vital role in predicting state information from one time step to another and correcting a priori knowledge of uncertain state estimates by available measured data corrupted by random noise. In contrast to linearization-based techniques, such as the extended Kalman filter, the use of an unscented transformation not only allows an approximation of a nonlinear process or measurement model in terms of a first-order Taylor series expansion at a single operating point, but it also leads to an enhanced quantification of the first two moments of a stochastic probability distribution by a large signal-like sampling of the state space at the so-called sigma points which are chosen in a deterministic manner. In this paper, a novel application of the unscented transformation technique is presented for the stochastic analysis of measurement uncertainty in magnet resonance imaging (MRI). A representative benchmark scenario from the field of velocimetry for engineering applications which is based on measured data gathered at an MRI scanner concludes this contribution.

    This article discusses the relations between Jews and Christians, especially in the last 50 years, after the promulgation (October, 28th 1965) of the Decree „Nostra Aetate” of the Second Vatican Council. The paper consists of three parts: in the first part we find the evaluation of the outstanding importance of Christian-Jewish dialogue, exercised by the St. John Paul II. – In the second part our attention is focused on the theological dialogue between Hans Urs von Balthasar and Martin Buber. Finally, in the third part we take into consideration the important the theological contribution of Joseph Ratzinger-Pope Benedict XVI on behalf of Christian-Jewish living together.
    Artykuł dotyczy relacji między Żydami a chrześcijanami, szczególnie w ostatnich 50 latach, po promulgacji przez II Sobór Watykański dekretu Nostra aetate (28 października 1965 r.). Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej znajdujemy ewaluację mającego ogromne znaczenie dialogu chrześcijańsko-żydowskiego uprawianego przez św. Jana Pawła II. W drugiej części uwaga jest skoncentrowana na dialogu teologicznym między Hansem Ursem von Balthasarem i Martinem Buberem. W końcowej, trzeciej części uwzględniony został ważny wkład teologiczny Josepha Ratzingera – papieża Benedykta XVI w dziedzinę współżycia chrześcijańsko-żydowskiego.

    The influence of St. Augustine on the development of western latin theological thinking is significant. In many ways, he also influenced thinking of counter-reformation and reformation theologians, mainly Martin Luther. Martin Luther quotes the passage of the 80ͭth homily on the Gospel of John in the third paragraph of the Smalcald Articles. Therefore, it is certain that Augustine influenced the understanding of baptism, mainly the relation between faith and word during administration of the sacrament of baptism. The aim of our study is to offer theological analysis of the 80th homily on the Gospel of John mentioned above in the context of Augustine´s thinking. It is a short dictated text written by the theologian of Hippo in 419-423 where he explains the Gospel of John 15, 1-5 word by word. Reformation, counter-reformation and post-Trentian theologians used to refer to the third paragraph of the 80th homily too often and their interpretation was influenced by their position, whether they were on the side of Catholics or Protestants. It is interesting that although the text was often quoted, there were only several studies that dealt with it in a professional way. Augustine´s homily reflects the spiritual wealth of the battle with donatism (the role of administrator and recipient of the sacrament of baptism) and pelagianism (baptism of children). In this study, we point to the fact that it is a commentary on the Sacred Scripture, therefore we analyse the homily as a whole. The study also includes the first complete translation of the homily into Slovak language.
    Wpływ św. Augustyna na rozwój zachodniej łacińskiej myśli teologicznej jest znaczący. W wielu aspektach wpłynął on także na refleksję kontrreformacyjnych I reformacyjnych Teologów, szczególnie Marcina Lutra. Marcin Luter cytuje fragment 80. Homilii do Ewangelii św. Jana w trzecim paragrafie Artykułów Szmalkaldzkich. Stąd można uznać za pewne, że Augustyn wpłynął na jego rozumienie chrztu, szczególnie relacji między wiarą a słowem w czasie sprawowania sakramentu chrztu. Celem niniejszego studium jest zaproponowanie teologicznej analizy wspomnianej wyżej 80. Homilii do Ewangelii Jana w kontekście myśli św. Augustyna. Jest to krótki dyktowany tekst, napisany przez teologa z Hippony między 419 a 423 r., w którym wyjaśnia on J 15, 1-5 słowo po słowie. Reformacja, kontrreformacja i teologowie potrydenccy odnosili się do trzeciego paragrafu 80. Homilii często, a na ich interpretacje miało wpływ to, czy znajdowali się po katolickiej, czy też protestanckiej stronie sporu. Interesujące jest to, że chociaż tekst ten był często cytowany, istniały jedynie nieliczne interpretacje, które podeszły do tekstu w sposób profesjonalny. Homilia Augustyna odzwierciedla duchowe bogactwo walki z donatyzmem (rola szafarza i przyjmującego sakrament chrztu) oraz pelagianizmem (chrzest dzieci). W niniejszym studium koncentrujemy się na tym, że jest to komentarz do Pisma św., stąd analizuje całą homilię.
    Der Einfluss des hl. Augustinus auf die Entwicklung des westlich-lateinischen theologischen Denkens ist nicht zu unterschätzen. In vielen Aspekten hat er auch die gegenreformatorischen und reformatorischen Theologen, vor allem Martin Luther, beeinflusst. Luther zitiert Fragmente der 80. Homilie zum Johannesevangelium im dritten Paragraf der Schmalkaldischen Artikel. Daher darf man mit Sicherheit annehmen, dass Augustinus das Taufverständnis Luthers beeinflusst haben konnte, vor allem das Verhältnis vom Glauben und Wort bei der Spendung des Taufsakramentes. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist eine theologische Analyse der genannten 80. Homilie zum Johannesevangelium im Kontext des Denkens vom hl. Augustinus. Sie umfasst einen kurzen Text, geschrieben vom Theologen aus Hippo zwischen den Jahren 419 und 423, in dem erklärt er, ein Wort nach dem anderen, den Text von Joh 15, 1-5. Die Reformation und Gegenreformation sowie die nachtridentinischen Theologen haben den dritten Paragraf der 80. Homilie oft erwähnt und ihre Interpretationen waren davon abhängig, ob sie protestantisch oder katholisch geprägt waren. Interessant ist die Tatsache, dass trotz der oftmaligen Zitierung dieses Textes, nur manche Interpretationen an ihn fachlich herangehen. Die Homilie Augustinus’ spiegelt den spirituellen Reichtum der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Donatismus (die Rolle des Spenders und Empfängers der Sakramente) sowie Pelagianismus (Kindertaufe) wieder.

    Pregnancy increases metabolic demand for insulin and may lead to the exhaustion of intraportally transplanted islets and post-gestational hyperglycemia. To prevent these complications, we implemented preemptive insulin supplementation during two subsequent pregnancies in an insulin-independent islet transplant recipient. This strategy resulted in optimal blood glucose control during the pregnancies, the preservation of the optimal islet graft function and the postpartum maintenance of long-term insulin independence.

    Formułowane w ostatnim czasie przez postępowych Amerykanów zarzuty wobec cynicznej, konserwatywnej „weaponizacji” wolności słowa trafnie zwracają uwagę na tkwiący w niej aspekt hipokryzji. Przesłankę tych oskarżeń często stanowi jednak wolność słowa rozumiana „absolutystycznie” jako bezwzględne dobro. W istocie należy ją zawsze rozumieć jako coś, co prowadzi do innego celu: mającego wymiar obiektywny, subiektywny bądź intersubiektywny. Najczęstszą funkcją wolności słowa jest tworzenie warunków dla epistemologicznego poszukiwania prawdy. Zwracali na to uwagę liberałowie, tacy jak John Stuart Mill, oraz marksiści, tacy jak Herbert Marcuse – twierdzący, że realizację tego celu utrudnia „represywna tolerancja” dla szkodliwych lub błędnych idei. Wolności słowa można bronić również ze względu na wpisaną w nią możliwość wyrażania indywidualnych opinii i uczuć, bez której nie ma mowy o jednostkowej autonomii. Trzecia funkcja wolności słowa ma charakter performatywny: język może służyć do działania w świecie. Współcześnie najczęściej mówi się w tym kontekście o ograniczaniu „mowy nienawiści” jako aktu przemocy symbolicznej, jednak konsekwencje tak rozumianej wolności słowa mogą być również pozytywne. Czwarty telos wolności wypowiedzi – semantyczny raczej niż epistemologiczny, ekspresywny czy performatywny – to tworzenie nowych znaczeń kulturowych bądź krytyka konwencjonalnych. Ponieważ wolność słowa może służyć jednej lub większej liczbie z tych funkcji, warto jej bronić również w niedoskonałym społeczeństwie, niezależnie od tego (przy całym szacunku dla Marcusego), że nie ma ona wartości bezwzględnej.
    Recent condemnation by progressive Americans of the conservative “weaponization” of free speech for cynical purposes, while accurate in its accusation of hypocrisy, often assumes a problematic “absolutist” notion of free speech as an inherent good. Instead, it should always be understood as functional in the service of another purpose, whether objective, subjective or intersubjective. Most frequently, it enables the epistemological search for the truth, a function stressed by liberals like J.S. Mill and Marxists like Herbert Marcuse (who argued that this search was hampered by “repressive tolerance” for wrong or evil ideas). It can also be defended for allowing the expression of individual opinions and feelings, which is the inherent mark of personal autonomy. Its third function is performative, the ability of language to make something happen in the world. The most heated current controversy reflecting this function concerns the limiting of offensive “hate speech” for committing symbolic violence, but it can have benign intersubjective effects as well. A fourth purpose of unconstrained speech, more semantic than epistemological, expressive or performative, is the generation of new cultural meanings or the critique of conventional ones. Because it can serve all or any of these functions, it is worth protecting even in an imperfect society, pace Marcuse, despite its lacking an absolute justification in itself.

    Recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic leading to a rapidly increasing number of hospitalizations enforced reevaluation of wound management strategies. The optimal treatment strategy for patients with chronic wounds and those recovering from emergency and urgent oncological surgery should aim to minimize the number of hospital admissions, as well as the number of surgical procedures and decrease the length of stay to disburden the hospital staff and to minimize viral infection risk. One of the potential solutions that could help to achieve these goals may be the extensive and early use of NPWT devices in the prevention of wound healing complications. Single-use NPWT devices are helpful in outpatient wound treatment and SSI prevention (ciNPWT) allowing to minimize in-person visits to the health care center while still providing the best possible wound-care. Stationary NPWT should be used in deep SSI and perioperative wound healing disorders as soon as possible. Patient’s education and telemedical support with visual wound healing monitoring and video conversations have the potential to minimize the number of unnecessary in-person visits in patients with wounds and therefore substantially increase the level of care.

Artykuł przedstawia, w jakim stopniu Painter zrozumiał historyczne pochodzenie zeteo w stosunku do Sitz im Leben Wspólnoty Janowej. Opisuje także niektóre z możliwych kierunków rozwoju myśli Paintera i zwraca uwagę na niektóre nurty ostatnich badań nad Ewangelią św. Jana.
    This article will tune into a debate with John Painter's, The Quest for the Messiah: The History, Literature and Theology of the Johannine Community, as a monograph that deals extensively with the theme of zeteo – seeking – in the Gospel of John. In this monograph, Painter has led to certain valuable results in his efforts to establish the importance of zeteo in this Gospel by studying its quest and rejection stories. The article will reveal the degree on which Painter has understood the historical origin of zeteo against the Sitz im Leben of the Johannine Community. This exercise will sketch out some of the main lines of development in Painter's work and highlights certain directions of recent research on the Gospel of John.

    We present a patient with intractable and debilitating pain secondary to chronic pancreatitis who was effectively treated with total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). Islets engrafted into his liver significantly contributed to improved blood glucose control and quality of life. Subsequently, the patient developed alcohol related acute liver failure and en bloc liver and pancreas transplantation was performed to replace the failing liver with engrafted islets. Pancreas transplantation was required to resolve his life-threatening severe hypoglycemic episodes. Herein, we detail an innovative and multidisciplinary management of this complex medical problem.

    Opis:
    The article aims at the example of the Letter of James to show how the theological reforms and hermeneutic and critical New Testament editions were reproduced in Polish translations of the 16th and 17th centuries. The authors show that on the level of textual criticism and philological solutions, Polish New Testament translators really derived from the achievements of European biblical studies, but remained faithful to the confessional tradition and not to the Greek testimonies. The reception of Reformation at the hermeneutic and theological level looks much worse. Interpreters usually do not take up polemics or defensive positions.
