The article discusses Dostoyevsky’s story The Crocodile as an episode in the development of the so-called “St. Petersburg story”, established by Pushkin and Gogol as a specific ideological and fictional genre, connected with the symbolic representation of the St. Petersburg period in Russian history. In the analysis of the title and the exposition of the story, the monster is seen as an allegory of the disquieted political body in Russia following the reforms of 1861. Among the sources of the allegory are the Biblical synonymous use of “Leviathan – Crocodile”, Thomas Hobbes’ s treatise Leviathan, and the Russian Old Believers’ invectives about The Ruler and The Crocodile-State. The analysis suggests that Dostoyevsky translates the political notion of Leviathan as a metaphor of the absolutist social negotiation through the equivalent of the Crocodile, already familiar in Russian collective mentality. In this respect, it is assumed that the story serves as a warning about the dangers resulting from the disquieted political body.

Leviathan by Andrey Zvyagintsev is a movie that depicts the world in a state of nature, with no prospects for creating a Hobbesian social contract. Set in the Russian peripheries, the film depicts a respected and caring family man who is gradually deprived of everything because of lack of political order with enforceable law and justice. The movie is a depiction of a contemporary “failed state”, equalized with the state of nature, where there is no legitimate power and violence remains the only tool to achieve goals both in private and public spheres. Religion consists of empty rituals that serve corrupt officials to maintain power. This world cannot last without innocent victims, scapegoats of the society, one of whom is the protagonist of the movie. This paper offers a legal and philosophical inquiry into the film, as it draws especially on the theory of the social contract proposed by Hobbes. It depicts a Russian town as a symbol of the state of nature as envisioned by Hobbes and describes the reasons why the social contract has not been made. According to Hobbes’s theory, in the state of nature concepts like justice and injustice do not convey any meaning; therefore, this paper investigates other: theological and anthropological concepts, to explore the meaning of Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan.
“Lewiatan” Andrieja Zwagincewa to film, który ukazuje świat w stanie natury, bez żadnych szans na zawiązanie Hobbesowskiej umowy społecznej. Film, którego akcja dzieje się na rosyjskich rubieżach, ukazuje losy szanowanego oraz rodzinnego mężczyzny, który stopniowo zostaje pozbawiony wszystkich swoich dóbr ze względu na brak porządku politycznego zdolnego do wprowadzenia prawa i sprawiedliwości. Film ukazuje współczesne “upadłe państwo”, które można zrównać ze stanem natury, gdzie nie ma żadnej prawowitej władzy, a jedynym narzędziem do osiągnięcia swoich celów (w sferze prywatnej i publicznej) jest tylko przemoc. Religia to tylko puste rytuały, które służą utrzymaniu władzy przez skorumpowanych dygnitarzy. Ten świat nie jest w stanie przetrwać bez niewinnych ofiar, kozłów ofiarnych, którym okazuje się być bohater filmu. Artykuł jest prawną i filozoficzną analizą filmu, który korzysta przede wszystkim z teorii umowy społecznej w wersji Hobbesa. Artykuł ukazuje rosyjskie miasteczko jako symbol stanu natury opisanego przez Hobbesa, i wskazuje przyczyny, dla których umowa nie mogła zostać zawarta. Według teorii Hobbesa, w stanie natury pojęcia takie jak sprawiedliwość i niesprawiedliwość nie niosą żadnego sensu. To dlatego w artykule przedstawione są inne, teologiczne oraz antropologiczne pojęcia, które mogą pomóc rozszyfrować znaczenie filmu Zwagincewa.

The phenomenon of aggression is the subject of neurophysiology, psychology, sociology and political science. The influence of cultural factors on the occurrence and the level of aggression between groups is raised especially in sociology. In the article – on the example of the analysis of Thomas Hobbes’s philosophical anthropology and his theory of the state (commonwealth) – the deeper level of cultural sources of aggression is considered, namely the impact of ontological assumptions on the model of human functioning and their translation into social and political practice. The original analysis of the influence of Hobbes’s antropology shows that man-mechanism is especially exposed to aggression and depression. Such a diagnosis has consequences in low level of personal safety and in high demand for external security structure. Personal safety is here analysed in three layers: ontic-cultural, psychological-social, and instrumental-defensive.

The Author analyses Carl Schmitt’s concept of the opposition between land and sea as a universal historical construct. According to the author of Nomos der Erde world history is the history of wars waged by maritime powers against land or continental powers and by land powers against sea or maritime powers. He uses biblical symbols to denote this historical conflict: a land power is symbolically represented as a giant land beast Behemoth, while a maritime power is portrayed as a giant sea beast Leviathan. The Author argues that the Age of Discovery marked the beginning of a new era of war between talassocracy and telurocracy. According to Schmitt, this spatial revolution constituted a part of the fundamental forces of history, which bring new lands and new seas into human awareness. The process of the colonization of the New World by Europeans included a struggle between terrestrial Catholicism and maritime Protestantism, between the sovereign state and the liberal state as well as two kinds of international law.

Celem niniejszego opracowania jest próba ustalenia, czy na kartach Biblii Hebrajskiej Lewiatan funkcjonuje jako realnie istniejące zwierzę czy mityczny potwór morski. Osiągnięcie postawionego celu jest możliwe dzięki analizie tych fragmentów Pisma Świętego, w których pojawia się kluczowy termin. Opracowanie podzielone zostało na dwie części. W pierwszej nastąpiło przybliżenie postaci Lewiatana w literaturze pozabiblijnej, w drugiej natomiast miały miejsce właściwe analizy konkretnych urywków biblijnych pod kątem sposobu prezentacji w tych tekstach wspomnianego stworzenia. W świetle przeprowadzonych analiz należy uznać za bardziej prawdopodobne, że na kartach Pisma Świętego Lewiatan funkcjonuje jako mityczny potwór morski. Nie ma zaś takich tekstów, które jednoznacznie interpretowałyby to stworzenie jako jakieś realnie istniejące zwierzę wodne.
The main purpose of the paper is discovering whether Leviathan in the Hebrew Bible is a real animal or a mythic marine monster. A definitive answer is in fact possible, thanks to analysis of certain biblical fragments where the crucial term is present. The paper is divided into two main parts: First, Leviathan is examined as encountered within extra-biblical literature. In the second part, this creature is analyzed in the context of concrete biblical fragments which include a presentation of Leviathan. On the basis of research, it can be claimed that, in the Hebrew Bible, Leviathan is to be understood as a mythic marine monster. Conversely, there is no known fragment in which Leviathan has to be understood as a real animal.

As Poland regained independence in 1918, it immediately had to deal with the question of how to shape its political and economic system. One important but at the same time controversial issue was the level of the state’s involvement in the economic life of the country and the measures used. In numerous debates among economists, the dominant topics included problems in the industry - in particular issues such as statism, monopolization, policy towards cartels and, in the later period, economic planning. The article presents the course of the discussion on the role of the state in the economy that took place in Poland in the years 1918-1939, as well as a review of arguments put forward by the proponents and opponents of state’s economic interventionism. For the purpose of this article, three groups that were most active in the debate were selected: the Kraków School, the Leviathan organization and the First Economic Brigade.

W artykule rozważany jest problem wyboru paradygmatu badań nad współrządzeniem we współczesnym światowym systemie neoliberalnego kapitalizmu. Krytycznej analizie poddany został paradygmat liberalnego instytucjonalizmu. Zawiera on bowiem sprzeczne założenia wyjściowe, a także nie wytrzymuje próby konfrontacji ze świadectwami empirycznymi. Ukazane są ograniczenia analizy systemowej inspirowanej naukami przyrodniczymi i technicznymi. W artykule ukazane są natomiast argumenty na rzecz koncepcji systemu-świata I. Wallersteina jako struktury heurystycznej badań nad neoliberalną globalizacją. W koncepcji tej ważnym elementem jest mechanizm redystrybucji zasobów między centrum a peryferiami. Pomijanie w polskiej politologii ekonomicznych uwarunkowań współczesnej polityki, analizy konfliktu przemysłowego, związków państwa z sektorem finansowym jest jednym ze źródeł jej słabości, nad czym toczy się żywa debata. Autor sądzi, że do debaty nad problemem sterowania cywilizacją światową wraca nie tylko wielki temat państwa, ale również ekonomia polityczna.
The article presents the integrative research strategy into contemporary political scene, national and global. It depicts the origins of what might be called global governance. The author states that in order to fully understand present-day politics one must apply – and integrate – the theoretical knowledge and data concerning: the global ecosystem, the global economy, the national production system, the national political scene and the consciousness of an individual. The industrial civilisation in its current free market shape has found itself in a new trap – Meadow`s trap. Human population, divided into local civilisations and national communities, has found itself in the phase of the structural crisis: it needs to overcome technological (energy), institutional (global governance) and social (adjusting mechanisms of global capitalism to the needs of ageing societies in the North and underdevelopment of the global South) barriers. The state will have an additional function – the function of global co-governance; its aim will be to harmonise interests of national companies with the optimum of civilisation.

How does the redistribution of income that a regime prescribes for society and the amount of public-good social-overhead investment it provides depend on the nature of that regime? And how do these infl uence said society’s productive success? Connections among these phenomena informed much of Mancur Olson’s (1982, 1991) life-work now so foundational to the literature on redistributive politics, economic growth/prosperity, and the nature of regimes. Still a transparent simple account of how the nature of a regime determines trade-offs between transfers and public capital investment can improve the foundations and clarify anomalies present in the literature. Here we elaborate a model to address these questions and we prove, contrary to received wisdom, that redistribution can reduce or actually and unexpectedly increase supplies of public overhead capital. Redistributive taxation reduces capital productivity, which incentivizes governments to supply less. But, contrary to conventional wisdom, redistribution can also so deplete the tax base that to offset some of the loss government will actually invest more in the way of public-overhead factor inputs than would a less redistributive regime of an otherwise comparable society.

This article is an attempt to synthetically present and test the main conclusions of the State-as-Leviathan model. In the first part, the main assumptions of the model are described. In the second, the model is developed further in order to present main research hypotheses. In the third part, the critique and remarks on the model are reviewed. The fourth part is devoted to developing an empirical model and presenting the main findings of the analysis. The summary concludes the text with some suggestions for future research. The conducted analysis allows us to draw conclusions pointing to the less-than-perfect ability of the Leviathan model to describe real events in the areas of fiscal policy and taxation and, in some instances, seems to corroborate the conclusions ascribed to the "orthodox" theory of public finance criticized by Buchanan and Brennan. A regression model built upon a database on selected EU countries derived from the Eurostat, European Commission and European Social Survey points to the fact that indeed the broadness of the taxable base can positively influence public revenue. And it also negatively affects the way people perceive the national government (in linę with model assumptions). But when we turn to the influence of the broadness of the base on its perceived quality of life, we can find out that, in the countries with a relatively broad base, people's perceived life satisfaction is significantly higher (in line with "orthodox" theories). At the same time, the analysis corroborates to some extent Leviathan-model suggestions that progressive taxation is beneficial for the citizens in comparison to proportional, as some recent research shows.

Artykuł omawia rolę writerly text (pojęcie R. Barthesa) w powieści M. Lowry’ego Through the Panama. Writerly text obejmuje m. in. notatki na marginesach oraz odwołania do autorów i dzieł literackich zawarte w głównym tekście. Wzmianka o opowiadaniu J. G reena Léviathan stanowi punkt wyjścia dla interpretacji utw oru M. Lowry’ego. Podobieństwa między tekstami przejawiają się w: 1) użyciu motywu podróży przez ocean; 2) traktowaniu morza jako przyczyny niepokoju; 3) poczuciu bycia obserwowanym. W opowiadaniu Léviathan istotną rolę odgrywa symbolika motywu Jonasza. Utwór Greena przedstawia jakby pierwszą część losów biblijnego bohatera widzianą oczami jego towarzyszy podróży. Prowokuje to do postawienia pytania, czy ukryta przed ludźmi tajemnica przemiany losu Jonasza nie dotyczy również bohatera Greena? Obrazowanie Léviathana nawiązuje także do opisu biblijnego potopu. Symbolika obu wątków biblijnych wiąże się z przejściem od „starego” do „nowego człowieka” (Jonasz, Noe). Śmierć „starego ja ” może oznaczać śmierć dotychczasowej osobowości twórczej bohatera powieści Lowry’ego. Pytanie czy pojawi się nowy tekst, a wraz z nim nowa wrażliwość artystyczna autora, pozostaje otwarte.

W artykule przedmiotem analizy są powstałe w Łodzi przed 1939 rokiem teksty literackie, pisane po polsku, niemiecku, w jidysz, po hebrajsku i rosyjsku, należące do wszystkich rodzajów literackich, reprezentujące różny poziom artystyczny. Autor podejmuje próbą wskazania składowych „tekstu łódzkiego” (według koncepcji Toporowa) oraz odnalezienia pokrewieństw w sposobie kreacji przestrzeni nowoczesnego miasta przemysłowego w literaturze modernistycznej. Łódzka przestrzeń wykreowana w literaturze powstałej przed 1939 rokiem ma charakter nieciągły, tranzytywny, wypełniona została anonimowymi jej uczestnikami, robotniczą masą, drobnymi handlarzami. Łódź, podobnie jak Manchester, Londyn, Chicago, Nowy Jork, jest modernistycznym miastem–molochem, przestrzenią interesów, wyzysku i degradacji, przestrzenią chaosu, trudną do poznania i opresyjną. Język kreacji łódzkiej przestrzeni – w efekcie „tekst łódzki” – odzwierciedla najważniejsze składowe i problemy industrializacji i nowoczesności. 
The article analyzes texts that represent the artistically diverse literary forms which were written in Polish, German, Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian in Łódź before 1939. The author attempts to identify the constitutive elements of the “Łódź text” (based on Toporow’s typography) and seeks similarities in the ways in which space in a modern industrial city is created in the modernist literature. The space of Łódź created before 1939 is discontinuous, transitory, and filled with its anonymous residents, working masses and peddlers. Łódź, like Manchester, London, Chicago and New York, is a modernist colossal urban space of swindle, extortion and degradation that brings chaos and is impenetrable and oppressive. The language of spatial creation in Łódź, the resulting “Łódź text”, reflects its key components – the problems of industrialization and modernity.

Opis:
In my article I attempt to decipher the logic of a large police and secret services operation conducted by means of surveillance and direct control of the gay men in the late 1980s in Poland. LGBTQ+ activists claim that some 11000 men were involved in it, and yet, this action has never been properly researched, summarized and no justice procedures have been undertaken after 1989. This article combines the „archive activism” of Howard Zinn and his followers in the queer activism and theory, certain elements of theories of the public sphere and counterpublics (Kluge and Negt, Warner etc) and the critical deconstructive and feminist research on the archive and the private (Derrida, Berlant, Gatens) in order to build a discussion of how to queer the scattered state archives of the state police and services without petrification, nostalgia or resignation. It investigates the large spectrum of implications of “being public against our will”, depicting forms of resistance and insubordination as well, as “archivizing against their will” in the institutional context avoiding responsibility.

Celem artykułu jest analiza koncepcji „cyfrowego Lewiatana”, jaka pojawia się w literaturze na styku filozofii technologii i filozofii społecznej. Nowy Cyfrowy Lewiatan, poza oczywistym odniesieniem do klasycznej koncepcji Th. Hobbesa, stanowi kontynuację tego, co M. Hardt i A. Negri nazwali „Imperium”, a B. Bratton określił jako „Stos” (the Stack). Argumentuję, że kluczowe jest spojrzenie na nowego Lewiatana jako na trwający wciąż proces budowy, a zatem w sposób procesualny, który pozwala na wydobycie ważnych charakterystyk tego globalnego techno-politycznego konstruktu. Wskazuję, że rozbudowa cyfrowego Lewiatana ma charakter odśrodkowy i pozbawiony odgórnego planu, który by wskazywał docelowe efekty całego przedsięwzięcia. Dostrzegam w tym wynik opisywanego przez J.F. Lyotarda kryterium performatywności, a także totalizujący rys, który objawia się m.in. w tym, że rozbudowa ta angażuje nas wszystkich. Cyfrowy Lewiatan może stanowić niebezpieczne zwieńczenie drogi od Rozumu, poprzez racjonalność, aż po szaleństwo racjonalizacji. Poddaję też dyskusji konsekwencje, jakie rozbudowa Lewiatana ma dla naszej zdolności myślenia w ogóle, a w szczególności do konceptualizacji samego tego tworu. Wiążę ten temat z próbą krytyki myślenia utopijnego, akceptującego warunki „nie-miejsca”, zgodnie z ideą Negriego i Hardta. Myślenie takie, idąc za M. Heideggerem, odrywa nas od miejsca i umiejscowienia, które – jak zakładam – powinny być zawsze podstawą myślenia.
