Opis:
The presented case demonstrates that acute lead poisoning may occur due to just short-term exposure to a mixture of lead-containing dust and ammunition. Such exposure may result in high blood lead levels persisting for years in the absence of any symptoms. A middle-aged male with a history of an approximately 7-day cleanup of an old recreational firing range with large ammunition and dust deposits presented to an emergency department with abdominal pain, dyspnea, fatigue and impaired cognitive function. Given his occupational history, specific tests were performed that showed high lead concentrations in both blood and urine. The patient was diagnosed with acute lead poisoning. He was started on chelation therapy that improved both clinical and laboratory parameters. Over a subsequent nearly 3-year follow-up, the patient’s blood lead levels fluctuated and continued to be increased. Given the absence of other sources of lead exposure, these were likely due to the formation of bone deposits. Med Pr. 2020;71(3):375–9

Opis:
Projectiles made of lead alloys are used for waterfowl hunting in Europe. The paper demonstrated that lead pellets, due to their construction and use, contaminate the environment, especially water ecosystems. During one hunting session, tens of thousands of lead balls are introduced to the environment. Moreover, dispersed heavy metal is ingested by birds as gastroliths; as a result, game birds as well as protected birds become intoxicated with lead. During hunting trips, birds are also injured. When entering into the food chain, lead from pellets poses a risk to many living organisms, including predators and scavengers. Injured or intoxicated birds have difficulty joining seasonal migrations. Meat, especially of wild ducks and geese, is consumed during the hunting season by hunters and their families. Considering the level of lead in the muscles of game birds, venison consumers are also exposed to lead intoxication. In Europe, an increasing number of hunters who use lead pellets has resulted in lead being accumulated in game birds, which is a hazard to the public health. In view of the above facts and other hazards resulting from hunting, which endanger humans and animals, the authors recommend a total ban on waterfowl hunting.

In this article, we review the research state of the bullwhip effect in supply chains with stochastic lead times. We analyze problems arising in a supply chain when lead times are not deterministic. Using real data from a supply chain, we confirm that lead times are stochastic and can be modeled by a sequence of independent identically distributed random variables. This underlines the need to further study supply chains with stochastic lead times and model the behavior of such chains.

Six-week old sunflower seedlings, cv. Ogrodowy, were treated with 0, 15, 45 and 60 mg Pb dm-3, and then the content of lead and selected physiological and biochemical parameters were measured. Photosynthesis efficiency, water relations (intensity of transpiration, relative water content (RWC)) and gene-encoding metallothionein were measured three times after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure to Pb. The content of glutathione and lead was analysed after 72 hours’ exposure to Pb. Most of the lead uptake was accumulated in the roots, then in the stems and leaves, but when re-calculated per plant dry weight, the uptake of the metal did not depend on the lead dose applied. The highest 60 mg Pb dm-3 treatment was accompanied by a significant decrease in dry weight content. Moreover, most of the lead taken up in these plants was transported to the stems and leaves (23.6% of total lead uptake). The lead doses used in this study did not affect the intensity of photosynthesis, but a decrease in transpiration and relative water content was observed. The glutathione level in the plants varied depending on the organ examined and the Pb concentration in the treatment. The expression of the metallothionein gene HaMT1 was observed in the stems only. These results indicate that the sunflower cultivar Ogrodowy is a promising plant for phytoremediation of lead-polluted soils.

Lead contamination of soil in shooting ranges creates an environmental problem. Samples of soil were analyzed for total lead (T-[Pb]) and extracted lead (TCLP-[Pb]) using toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). Total content of lead in soil samples varied from 640 to 4600 ppm. The TCLP test indicated that lead in most of soil samples exceeded the 5 ppm, a critical level of EPA regulation for solid and hazardous waste. The ratios of leaching lead (TCLP-[Pb]) to total lead (T-[Pb]) in soil samples ranged from 1.9 % to 5.2 %. The TCLP extracts from soil samples indicated lead concentration levels of 5 to 45 times over the US EPA regulatory level of 5 ppm and this was characterized as a toxic waste.

W etapie utlenienia powstaje węglan Pb, cerusyt, znacznie rzadziej, w obecności jonów innych pierwiastków, np.: P, As, Mo, V, Cr tworzy fosforany, arseniany, molibdeniany, wanadyniany i chromiany ołowiu.
The publication describes issues related to the natural occurrence of lead in the environment and its secondary, anthropogenic concentrations in soil, water and atmospheric dust. The changing directions of the use of lead in the last several thousand years are presented. It is pointed out that relatively low temperature of metallurgical production and favourable properties fostered a large-scale use of lead, one of the seven earliest known metals. The article indicates that one reason for the rapidly increasing lead mining was the extraction of silver from the galena ores. The lead geochemistry and mineralogy are then discussed in terms of the concentration and forms of this element in various lithospheric environments. The strong tendency to bind with sulphur causes it to be the most common in a Pb sulphide, galena. In the oxidation stage, a Pb carbonate, cerussite or Pb sulphate, anglesite are formed, and much less frequently ions of other elements, e.g. P, As, Mo, V, Cr, form lead phosphates, arsenates, molybdates, vanadates and chromates. The geology and mineralogy of the Silesian-Cracowian Zn-Pb ore deposits are characterised. A relatively low geochemical activity of lead Pb2+ ions makes a transfer of lead to the living organisms limited in the natural conditions, although it increases dramatically for synthetic minerals or lead compounds. Methods of processing Zn-Pb ores and metallurgical lead production are described, which has been associated with rapidly increasing zinc production since the 19th century, so one significant source of lead emissions is zinc smelters. The significant role of the Silesia–Cracow region for the global production of lead, zinc and cadmium in the nineteenth and early twentieth century is stressed. The volume of lead production in the world and Poland is presented. In terms of various uses of lead (car batteries, alloys, dyes, the addition of Pb tetraethyl to petrol, along with others), the most important sources of emissions of lead and its compound to the soil, water, and atmosphere are indicated. Sources and volumes of Pb emissions in Europe over the period 1955–2010 are summarised.More detailed information related to lead emissions to the environment refers to the Silesia–Cracow area. Numerous smelters had produced lead, zinc, and alloys of non-ferrous metals for 200 years and associated with the local and regional contamination of the environment with heavy metals. Lead has powerful toxic effects on living organisms, especially its synthetic forms emitted by smelters and factories using this metal. Periods of the greatest prosperity of the Silesian lead, zinc and cadmium smelting were associated with the increase in employment, economic progress and enormous profits for their owners. On the other hand, they contributed to the catastrophic contamination of the environment and difficult to estimate the scale of illness in children and adults due to lead poisoning.

Introduction. Skin is the largest organ of the human body. It plays an important role in protection against harmful substances found in the surrounding environment and takes part in the elimination of heavy metals from the body by sweating. The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes in the concentration of lead and copper in the sweat collected on the first and the fourteenth day of endurance training. Materials and methods. The research included 43 patients undergoing a supervised, two-week endurance training on a cycle ergometer and cross-trainer. The lead and copper contents were presented in relation to the sodium content as an indicator of the amount of excreted sweat. Results. The lead concentration in relation to the sodium content in the samples of sweat taken with the use of swabs is statistically significantly higher on day 1 (Me = 1.64-E-4) than the 14th day (Me = 0.37-E-4) p = 0.027. In the sweat samples collected with a plaster, the lead concentration on day 14 of rehabilitation (Me = 0.08-E-4) is statistically significantly lower than before the beginning of the training cycle (Me = 1.19-E-4) p = 0.044. The concentration of copper in sweat samples collected with swabs and patches on day 1 of the rehabilitation cycle does not significantly differ from the content of samples collected on day 14. Conclusions. Endurance training with submaximal heart rate results in reduced excretion of lead in the sweat and does not significantly affect the level of copper. Further research into the impact of physical effort on the excretion of metals from the body can help explain the results13

Opis:
Objective. The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of occupational lead exposure on the hematological and biochemical parameters in occupationally exposed and non exposed inhabitants of Karachi. Material and methods. In 100 lead exposed subjects recruited from automobile workshops, lead battery repair and recycling units located in Karachi and in 100 control subjects the general health status, hematological parameters and exposure markers for lead were measured. Results. Results indicated that the mean values of blood lead level and δ-aminolevulinic acid were significantly higher (P<0.05) while the activity of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase were significantly decreased (P<0.05) among battery repair and recycling workers as compared to controls. The abnormalities in the blood lead level, δ-aminolevulinic acid and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase were more frequent in lead exposed battery repair workers when compared with control subjects. The blood lead levels and δ-aminolevulinic acid were positively correlated while δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase was found to be negatively correlated with age, years of exposure and years of employment. Blood lead level was positively correlated with hemoglobin and RBC count while δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase was negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentration. The work related symptoms, droopiness, nasal symptoms and muscular pain were more frequent among battery repair workers as compared to control group. The findings of present study confirmed that occupational exposure to lead is associated with deviation in important hematological parameters and biological markers of exposure to lead among lead exposed workers, and also confirms the impact of lead exposure in the development of adverse effects among lead exposed workers. Conclusions. The study provides the data for risk assessment in lead battery repair workers of Karachi and suggests the need for preventive measures for battery repair workers and improvements to reduce occupational lead exposures to protect them from lead toxicity. It is suggested that hematological and physical examinations of lead exposed workers should be carried out periodically to prevent future health hazards.
Cel. Badania przeprowadzono w celu określenia wpływu zawodowego narażenia na ołów na hematologiczne i biochemiczne parametry u zawodowo narażonych w porównaniu do nienarażonych mieszkańców Karaczi. Materiał i metody. U 100 osób narażanych na ołów spośród pracowników zatrudnionych w zakładach naprawy i przetwarzania akumulatorów w Karaczi i u 100 osób kontrolnych badano ogólny stan zdrowia, parametry hematologiczne i markery narażenia na ołów. Wyniki. Wyniki wskazują, że średnie poziomy ołowiu i kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego we krwi były znacząco wyższe (P<0.05), podczas gdy aktywność dehydratazy kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego była znacząco niższa (P<0.05) u zatrudnionych przy naprawie i przetwarzaniu akumulatorów w porównaniu do osób z grupy kontrolnej. Poziomy ołowiu we krwi i kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego były skorelowane pozytywnie podczas gdy w przypadku aktywności dehydratazy kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego stwierdzono negatywną korelację do wieku i mierzonego w latach czasu narażenia.

This article offers an overview and preliminary arrangements of literary texts, chosen paintings and films (most of them from the past three centuries) which feature the motif of lead. The presence of lead as a symbol has been detected in poetry which treated the problem of war and peace; occasionally this use of lead has occurred in relation to printing, typesetting, and – less frequently – children’s toys. Much more often the motif of lead has been used in literary works to introduce the topic of melancholia and to express artists’ interest in alchemy. An analysis of literary prose at the turn of the 20th century related to zinc and lead metallurgy shows that lead did not occur in the context of mining, chemistry, and medicine until the 19th century. On the basis of studies of the press, historical literature, and contemporary reportage, the article shows the toxic nature of lead and its harmful effect on people and the environment, about which artists and authors try to warn the public at the turn of the 21st century. The article shows that the parallel between melancholia and saturnism is a well-documented phenomenon.

The paper presents experimental studies of a drive system with a lead screw. The concept and the construction of the test stand, its parameters as well as the applied measuring apparatus and the scope of tests are described. Furthermore, a measuring system and a methodology of determining the loads on the nut of the lead screw, based on the strain gauge measurements, were developed. A special nut bracket with specimens for the strain gauge measurement was designed. Since the specimens are simultaneously subjected to tension, two plane bending and non–free torsion, a coefficient essential for determining the torque on the nut of the lead screw was estimated based on the finite element analysis of the nut bracket under complex load condition. The first part of experimental studies includes the determination of the efficiency of the lead screw and the efficiency of the typical drive system with the lead screw. The impact of the load level and the constant resistance in the system are included in the research. The second part of the study concerns the determination of dynamic load coefficients for various operating parameters. The efficiency of the lead screw and the efficiency of a typical drive system with the lead screw as well as the dynamic factors at start–up and braking were determined based on experimental tests referred to a ball screw.

Aquatic ecosystems are a valuable part of natural environment. The increasing level of pollution in waters transforming biocoenoses and other adverse effects of the impact of toxic substances have contributed to the development of biological monitoring. The aim of the study was to determine the changes in contents of zinc and lead in bottom sediments and roots of aquatic plants: Phragmites australis and Acorus calamus in the river Narew. There were 14 points on the river, from where samples of bottom sediments and plant material were collected. The contents of lead and zinc were determined by means of flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry using Varian device. It was proven that bottom sediments were characterized by low contents of zinc and lead except from two sampling points: in Bondary and Narew. Achieved results of analyzes of plant material showed a slight exceeding in the case of lead. Spatial distribution of zinc and lead contents in examined roots of plants coincided with their contents in bottom sediments, which was also confirmed by statistical analysis. It was proven that aquatic plants had greater tendency for accumulation of metals than bottom sediments.

Flotation separation of galena and chalcopyrite is always a difficult problem in mineral processing. In this paper, the selective preoxidation of galena and chalcopyrite with sulfuric acid was developed, and then the two minerals were completely separated by flotation. The surface oxidation mechanism of galena and chalcopyrite with sulfuric acid was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and the results showed that hydrophilic oxide film was formed on the galena surface, while the surface of chalcopyrite is still hydrophobic sulfide film, which led to the separation of the two minerals by flotation. In addition, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to analyze the influence of main preoxidation parameters on the flotation separation of copper-lead concentrate, and the parameters were further optimized, as follows: sulfuric acid concentration of 5.3 mol/L, oxidation temperature of 101.8 °C and time of 48.3 min. The mixed concentrate containing Cu 11.57% and Pb 16.75% was preoxidized under the above conditions, and the flotation separation verification results showed that Cu concentrate with Cu grade of 18.09% and recovery of 95.41%, and Pb concentrate with Pb grade of 44.96% and recovery of 95.94% was obtained respectively. This paper provides a new method of preoxidation combined flotation to achieve high-efficiency separation of copper-lead mixed concentrate.

Due to the rapid pace of urbanization, the lead-zinc slags previously located outside the settlement turned out to be within the city of Shymkent and began to pose a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of lead-zinc slags on the environment of Shymkent. It has been revealed that the fields of ruderal plant species are inversely correlated with the lead content in the soil, for phyto-indication of the state of soils, the most informative indicators are the phytocenotic composition and the projective covering of soils with vegetation. At the same time, the proportion of annual species in the control is 53.5 ± 5.6%; with an increase in the toxic load, their role gradually weakens, reaching from 14496.0 ± 105.1 mg/kg Pb2+ to 5.2 ± 0.4%. It was found that Dodartia orientalis, Centaurea squarrosa Willd., Plantago lancetofolium are hyperaccumulators of lead ions, while electron microscopic images showed that lead ions accumulate in the intercellular space of plants, forming significant conglomerates of 10–75 nm. The negative influence of lead-zinc waste has been established, which leads to the accumulation of lead in the blood of children and, as a consequence, is the cause of various diseases. The maximum lead content in the amount of 103 micrograms / dl was found in the blood of children in the area of the city, located 800–1000 m from the slag storage site. Developing hypochromic anemia in children indicates its toxic origin. It was revealed that 90% of children have such pathologies as biliary dyskinesia, dental caries, small anomalies of heart development.

Purpose: This study is a contribution to the validation of the Motivation to Lead (MTL) scale proposed by Chan and Drasgow (2001) in order to measure three types of motivation to be a leader: affective, social-normative and calculative. This research examines the psychometrical properties of the MTL scale in the Estonian context. Methodology: The sample of 517 military and non-military individuals from the Estonian Defence Forces, Estonian Police and students from Tallinn University participated in the study. The original MTL scale was expanded by with the addition of ideological and patriotic dimensions proposed by Amit and colleagues (2007). The factorial structure of the MTL Scale was analysed by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (respectively N = 170 and N = 347). Findings: The results confirmed that both three- and five-component MTL scales are applicable in the Estonian context; the pool of 35 items was reduced into 25 items with good internal reliability. Moreover, the results showed correlations between leadership self-efficacy and MTL components, and differences between leaders’ and non-leaders’ MTL. The results indicate that the MTL scale can be a reliable and useful instrument to measure leadership motivation in the Estonian military context. Originality: This study is the first to adapt the MTL scale to the Estonian context. In addition, it examines the validity of ideological and patriotic MTL as part of the general MTL construct outside of the Israeli samples.

Phytoremediation is the technique of using green plants to remove toxic pollutants from heavy metal contaminated soil through degradation and detoxification mechanisms. Therefore, this research examines the potential of two types of vegetable crops, namely Crassocephalum crepidioides and Amaranthus sp., in reducing Pb contamination in polluted soil. The treatments tested were planting media in polybags dosed with 0.3 and 6 g/polybag of Pb 1 week before planting. The method used was a randomized block design, with each treatment being repeated three times. Furthermore, each treatment consists of three sample plants. The growth evaluation started 6 days after planting and was performed every 6 days. The evaluation was conducted on plant height, leaf area, leaf chlorophyll content, fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, Pb levels in roots and shoots, and Translocation Factor (TF). The results showed that the higher the Pb in the media, the lower the rate of change in plant height, leaf area, biomass, and chlorophyll content. Additionally, C. crepidioides and Amaranthussp. absorb Pb in the soil with a phytoextraction mechanism, thereby remediating heavy metal contaminated soil, as indicated by the TF value > 1. In conclusion, soil remediation should be performed using C. crepidioides, considering that it is less popular as a vegetable in Indonesia.

The aim of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the removal of Cu and Pb ions by algae. The experiments were carried out in the presence of two algal populations: a pure culture of Raphidocelis subcapitata, and a mixed chlorophyta population. The research involved a model study, experiments in the presence of wastewater from the manufacture of batteries, and the study of process kinetics. The wastewater pH was 4.0, and the initial concentrations of metal ions in the wastewater were 95.4 mg/L for Pb and 48.3 mg/L for Cu, respectively. The maximum sorption capacity of the pure Raphidocelis subcapitata culture was 14.8 mg/g d.m. for Pb, corresponding to the removal of 72% of lead, and 6.1 mg/g d.m. for Cu, corresponding to the removal of 43% of copper from the wastewater. The best ion sorption efficiency in the case of the mixed chlorophyta population was 7.0 mg/g d.m. for Pb, i.e., 61% removal of lead, and 12.8 mg/g d.m. for Cu, i.e., 69% removal of copper ions from the wastewater. The optimum duration of the process was found to be 1 hour, since the majority of biomass samples reached the maximum saturation after that time. On the basis of the obtained results (Lagergren models), it was found that the dominant mechanism of the process was chemisorption.

Cultivated soils in high water conditions can be a source of methane (CH4). Despite the significant introduction of lead (Pb) into soils with fertilizers or sewage sludge, there are few reports concerning its impact on methane production in arable soils. The main premise of the study was to characterize the response of methanogenesis after soil contamination with Pb. For this reason, the effect of Pb on CH4 production in three different mineral arable soils was investigated. Lead, in the chloride form, was added at two concentrations, which were established based on the Sewage Sludge Directive (300 and 1 500 mg kg–1). Additionally, two types of controls were used – water and CaCl2 with chloride ions. It was observed that the process could be slowed down at the lower dose and that methane production was totally inhibited at the higher dose. Additionally, the inhibitory effect of the chloride ions on the process was also observed in the control samples. Despite the inhibition of methanogenesis in the soil, which has a positive effect on reducing the amount of the gas released, this process cannot be analysed individually. Other reactions in the soil should also be taken into consideration, and these changes which occur under the influence of the various factors should be investigated further.

Opis:
This research aimed to determine the effect of different concentrations of Lead (Pb) on the morphology of kale and spinach plants. The process involved planting kale and spinach seeds in tubs and transferring them to polybags with planting media in the form of soil and sand at a ratio of 4:1 after strong roots were developed. It is important to note that the media were analyzed to ensure the Pb content in the soil was below the threshold before planting. Pb was later provided 1 week before planting in the form of PbNO3 in the media at a dose of 1 and 2 g/polybag and mixed effectively to ensure even distribution, while the sample used as the control was not given any Pb. The transplanting process was conducted after the plants were 18 days old in the nursery and the initial observations at 9 DAT showed that the kale leaves were darker with a score of 3 than spinach with a score of 1, but the spinach leaves became darker in color with score 3 as the age of the plants increased. Moreover, the kale changed to a lighter color with a score of 2 from the 9th day of observation after transplanting, while spinach requires 15 DAT to become score 2 until the end of the observation. It should be pointed out that both plants showed morphological changes due to the existence of the Pb but their base leaves did not reflect any effect. The kale leaf tip became blunt, while the spinach leaf tip was not affected and both plants were discovered to have longer roots and more root hairs in the control compared to the treatments. Furthermore, the total chlorophyll of spinach in the control was higher than kale but observed to reduce as the concentration of Pb increased in the treatments. The morphology and physiology of spinach and kale plants changed due to the Pb exposure with the spinach was discovered to be more sensitive as indicated by more visible morphological damage to its leaves at the end of the observation. It is possible to use the morphology of spinach and kale to detect Pb-contaminated land.

Opis:
The article presents the results of thermodynamic and experimental research on the processing of cinders from the firing of Shalkiya deposit lead-zinc ore tailings with the production of siliceous ferroalloys. Thermodynamic modeling carried out using the HSC-6.0 complex based on the Gibbs energy minimization principle showed that the interaction occur with the formation of CaSiO3, FeSiO3, MgSiO3, K2OˑSiO2, FeSi, Fe5Si3, SiC, Fe3Si, Si, SiOg, FeSi2.33, FeSi2, CaSi, Zn, Zng, Pb, Pbg; an increase in the iron amount in the system allows increasing the silicon extraction degree into the alloy at 1800°C to 76%, to reduce the silicon concentration in the alloy from 41 to 24%; FS25 grade ferrosilicon formed at 1752-1867°C in the presence of 88-100% iron, and FS45 grade ferrosilicon – at 1863-1900°C and 20-22.4% iron. Electric melting of a charge containing 63.83% calcined cinder of tailings, 19.15% coke, and 17.02% steel chips allows to obtain FS45 grade ferrosilicon (44.1-43.9% Si) with the extraction of 69.7% silicon and sublimates with the content of 32-38% zinc and lead. The results obtained allow complex processing of lead-zinc sulfide ore tailings with the extraction of not only non-ferrous metals, but also silicon in the ferroalloy.

Opis:
Lead is an environmental contaminant. The majority of epidemiological research on the health effects of lead has been focused on children, because they are more vulnerable to lead than adults. In children, an elevated blood lead (B-Pb) is associated with reduced Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score. This paper summarizes the current opinions on the assessment of the health risk connected with the children’s environmental exposure to lead. The B-Pb level of concern of 100 μg/l proposed by the US Centers of Disease Control in 1991 was for a long time accepted as the guideline value. In the meantime there has been a significant worldwide decrease of B-Pb levels in children and present geometric mean values in the European countries range from 20 to 30 μg/l. The recent analyses of the association of intelligence test scores and B-Pb levels have revealed that the steepest declines in IQ occur at blood levels < 100 μg/l and that no threshold below which lead does not cause neurodevelopmental toxicity can be defended. European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded in 2010, on the basis of results of Benchmark Dose (BMD) analysis, that an increase in B-Pb of 12 μg/l (BMDL₀₁) could decrease the IQ score by one point. It seems that this value can be used as a “unit risk” to calculate the possible decrease of IQ and, consequently, influence of the low-level exposure to lead (< 100 μg/l) on the health and socioeconomic status of the exposed population.

Opis:
Infants and little children are the highest risk group as far as the exposition to toxic metals is concerned. Newly born babies do not have effectively functioning regulatory mechanisms and the absorption of mineral elements, including toxic ones, is higher than in older children and adults. Separate, more rigorous requirements have been determined for food products for infant nutrition. Special attention is required in the case of toxic metals, including lead and cadmium, which are regarded as particularly harmful to the organism. The objective of the present work was to establish the content of lead and cadmium in powdered milk used in the nutrition of infants in the first months of their lives. Moreover, on the basis of surveys, the popularity of using milk replacement formulas was determined, as well as factors affecting this situation. All the examined preparations were labelled as “a special nutrition product”. They had been purchased in different groceries in Lublin in October 2007, all before their use-by date. The shares of Pb and Cd were marked in the samples. It was demonstrated that only two preparations did not comply with the recommendations regarding the content of cadmium, while in the other samples the maximum value was not exceeded. It was also noted that the analysed preparations were not safe for babies as far as the content of lead was concerned. At the same time, it was observed that as many as 87% babies were breast-fed, which is a positive phenomenon, whereas 40% women used combined nutrition for their children (breast feeding alternately with powdered milk). The choice of a particular preparation resulted in the first place from the doctor’s recommendations, and next from babies’ preferences and friends’ opinions.
Materiał do badań stanowiły preparaty uznanych marek, przeznaczone do żywienia niemowląt w pierwszych miesiącach życia. W pobranych próbach oznaczono zawartość Pb i Cd.

The present paper deals with the extraction and separation of zinc, lead, silver, and bismuth from a refractory bismuth refining slag via a hydrometallurgical route. The process consists of a preliminary leaching of zinc with water, followed by the selective leaching of lead and silver with a calcium chloride solution, leading to the crystallization of lead chloride and the cementation of silver. The diagrams of the total concentrations of [Pb]/[Ag] versus [Cl-] and temperature in the Pb/Ag-Cl-H2O system were drawn, respectively, to determine the optimum concentration of leaching agent and leaching temperature. The potential-pH diagram of the Pb/Ag/Bi-H2O system indicates that the preferential leaching of lead and silver could be achieved. Finally, 98.8% of lead and 90.4% of silver were selectively removed by further leaching the water leaching residue with 400 g/dm3 of CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5 and 80 °C, while only 3.7% of bismuth was leached in this stage. Fifty-nine percent of lead in the leach liquor was separated out as PbCl2 by natural cooling. Ninety-five percent of silver in mother liquor was recovered by cementation with a lead sheet. The depleted CaCl2 solution can be sent to the leaching step again to close the loop.

This paper investigates the flotation behavior of Cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid (CHA) and benzhydroxamic acid (BHA) on cassiterite under lead nitrate activation conditions and elucidates the adsorption mechanism of CHA on the cassiterite surface. Microflotation experiments were performed to compare the capturing efficiency of CHA and BHA at pH values ranging from 4 to 12. Results showed that CHA exhibited superior capability in capturing cassiterite compared to BHA. The recovery of cassiterite in the hydroxamic acid-based flotation system correlated positively with the adsorption of hydroxamic acid on the cassiterite surface. Adsorption experiments revealed an increase in adsorption quantity with an increase in hydroxamic acid dosage, with CHA exhibiting significantly higher adsorption amount than BHA on the cassiterite surface. To analyze the adsorption mechanism of CHA on the cassiterite surface, both infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were conducted, both before and after lead nitrate activation. IR spectra and XPS results indicated that lead ion activation enhanced the adsorption of CHA on the cassiterite surface, resulting in an increased number of active sites for CHA interaction. Additionally, chemisorption of CHA occurred on the cassiterite surface.

Therefore, the development of lead-free solders is one of the most important research areas of the electronic industry. This paper investigates multicomponent Sn-Ag-Cu based lead-free solders with different compositions. The properties of the six-component Innolot (SAC+BiSbNi) and two low-Ag containing alloys were compared with the widespread used SAC307 solder. Microstructure investigations and X-ray diffraction measurements were performed to analyze and identify the formed phases, furthermore, tensile tests and microhardness measurements were executed to determine the mechanical properties of the examined solders.

With the rapid advancement of digital processors, filters have been commonly implemented using microcomputers. In this study, a low-cost and compact Arduino Uno development board was used to realize digital lead and lag compensators. Arduino boards are very affordable. Consequently, they were investigated to see if they were capable of preserving the frequency response of continuous-time compensators. The experiments required a set of equipment including a function generator, an Arduino Uno development board, a PC-based oscilloscope, and a laptop. The signal frequency was varied from 0 to 500 Hz. Two discretization methods were employed, namely bilinear transformation and matched pole-zero mapping. The results showed that an Arduino Uno board can be utilized to implement lead and lag compensators to some extent. The discrete-time compensator preserved the capability of filtering out certain frequencies. The change in DC gain was negligible, however, there was a significant difference in the cut-off frequency and transient slope. For both discretization methods, the frequency responses at high frequency experienced a rippling profile.

The lead contamination of the environment affects the life of organisms, as the quality of the environment influences and determines the quality of living things, both plants and animals. Therefore, remediations need to be taken so that the polluted land could be repurposed for various activities safely. Phytoremediation is a method that employs plants to move, detach, or stabilize pollutants in the form of eitherorganic or inorganic compounds. In this study, the Croton (Codiaeum varigatum) plant was used as a phytoremediator planted in pots. Three pots were observed: 500 mg of Pb (NO3)2 was added to the first (T1) pot, 750 mg (T2) of Pb (NO3)2 was added up to the second (T2) pot, and no addition to the third (T0) pot. The parameters analyzed included plant biomass, the Pb content in plants, bioaccumulation factors, translocation factors, metal tolerance index, and photosynthetic pigment content. The results showed that Pb affected all of the analyzed parameters. Pb causes a decrease in the plant biomass and a downturn in chlorophyll a and b. The Pb accumulation in root > stem > leaf. The BAF value <1, the TF value <1 and the MTI value ranged 89.73–82.80%.

The aim of this paper was to analyse the impact of long-term operation of a zinc-works on the soil environment based on 20-year observations. The study material comprised the surface soil samples and soil profiles collected in close vicinity of the zinc-works in Miasteczko Śląskie (Southern Poland) and in the locations within certain distance from the plant. The total content of Pb and Zn in the surface soil samples collected in the vicinity of the zinc-works in 2018 ranged from 3,975 to 26,200 mg/kg for Pb and from 3,358 to 21,867 mg/kg for Zn. These values were considerably higher than those recorded 20 years earlier (i.e. 601–11,939 mg/kg and 1,009–13,924 mg/kg for Pb and Zn, respectively). The mineral composition was dominated by quartz, feldspars and carbonates (e.g. calcium carbonate). Additionally, iron hydroxides (lepidocrocite), lead sulphates (anglesite) and zinc silicates (hemimorphite) were found. The bioavailable quantities of Pb and Zn in the soil samples collected in 2018 amounted to 30% of the total content in the case of Pb and 34% of the total Zn content. Twenty years earlier, the mean values were 66% (Pb) and 44% (Zn), respectively. The acidity of the soil samples collected in the vicinity of the zincworks indicated their very good buffering capacity, as well as the capacity to release 58-60% of the total Pb and Zn contents to the environment, with a pH decrease of only 3 units. The Risk Assessment Code (RAC) calculated based on the Pb and Zn cations in the exchangeable positions and bound with carbonates indicates that even after 20 years, there is still a high environmental risk related to the presence of those metals in soils. This paper also demonstrates that presently the major factors contributing to the pollution of soil are deflation and suffosion of small particles from the old, unprotected mining and industrial waste dumps.

The article considers the economic and political use of small lead seals (tag seals) to validate different kinds of social relations in early medieval Poland and Rus’. Originated in Antiquity, the practice of sealing peaked in Byzantium from where it spread to Early Rus’. This is reflected, for example, in the use in late 11th-late 14th centuries of small lead seals referred to as the “Drohiczyn type”. In this paper I put forward an opinion that not all the early medieval small lead seals should be attributed to “coinless economy”. A study of the corpus of small lead seals from Drohiczyn and Czermno, and finds from Mazovia, has identified a group with iconography identical to the Polish Hohlpfennig, suggesting they were commercial-customs small lead seals used by the Piast dynasty, contemporary with the bracteates introduced in the first half/mid-13th-early 14th centuries. The extraordinary number of small lead seals found in Drohiczyn possibly reflects the outstanding position of the town in the Eastern and Central European relationships as well as a short-term relocation of trade routes leading north, caused by the military conflicts of the 1240-1280s in the upper course of the Western Bug. The practice of sealing could have been introduced by Conrad of Mazovia to Poland from Early Rus’. Subsequently, the small Polish lead seals might have contributed to the emergence of lead cloth seals in Western Europe as part of a cultural transfer.

Molluscs represent a simple and significant model system to test how specific metals can simultaneously affect development and putative mechanisms of defense and/or cell death. Lamellidens marginalis (Bivalvia: Eulamellibranchiata) are the molluscs of Indian freshwater ecosystem and important biological resources. Lead (Pb) is widespread heavy metal that is released into the environment from different sources. Their accumulation in the soils can become dangerous to all kinds of organisms, including plants, animals and human life, causing many adverse effects. Lamellidens are used as reliable markers and bioindicators highly sensitive to environmental changes. The aim of the present work was to determine the toxic effect of lead on the cytomorphology of hemocytes of Lamellidens marginalis and to evaluate its potential as a bio monitor for detecting a heavy-metal polluted environment. Treated cells showed apoptosis and paraptosis (vacuolation) like features. Morphological analyses suggested an irretrievable destruction of normal morphology of hemocyte. However further studies are needed to investigate this topic, particularly in relation to the pollutants reported in this paper.

Po wprowadzeniu dyrektyw unijnych ołów i kadm musiały zostać wyeliminowane z warstw grubych, natomiast stop lutowniczy SnPb należało zastąpić lutowiami bezołowiowymi.
This paper presents the evolution of resistive systems in thick film technology after RoHS and WEEE environmental regulations introduced by European Union. The films in traditional resistive system contain lead and cadmium oxides that cannot be used after July 1th 2006 according to the new EU regulations. The tin-lead solder alloys were used in such systems for attaching discrete components and terminations assembly. The conductive films were based on palladium-silver layer in order to limit dissolution rate of silver as well as to protect against ionic migration and electromigration effects while the circuit with the resistive system is powered. The resistive films were based on bismuth ruthenium that was very stable in the presents of lead. The new regulations obliged to eliminate lead and cadmium from thick film materials including tin-lead solder alloys. Such a change required a far going change of thick-film compositions. The new problems appeared inside the resistive layer as well as at the interfaces resistive-conductive layer and conductive layer lead-free solder. The author proposed a silver-platinum conductive layer and ruthenium dioxide resistive layer for environmental friendly resistive system.

The binding capacity by living cells is significantly higher than that of nonliving cells at tested conditions. The maximum biosorption capacities for lead and nickel by using Ps. fluo-rescens and B. pumilus were 77.6, 91.4 and 65.1, 73.9 mg/g, respectively. The results of bio-sorption time and desorption experiments suggested that Pb(II) and Ni(II) uptake by the living bacterial biomass might be enhanced by intracellular accumulation.

Opis:
In this study, the feasibility of lead dissolution from lead concentrate using fluoroboric acid by hydrometallurgical method was investigated in order to aviod the disadvantages of the pyrometallurgical processes. The effects of important operating parameters such as leaching time, liquid/solid ratio, stirring speed, temperature and fluoroboric acid concentration on the lead recovery were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD) model. The results show that the optimum conditions for the high lead recovery were: leaching time= 30 min, liquid/solid ratio= 10, stirring rate= 500 rpm, temperature= 80oC and fluoroboric acid concentration= 3.35 mol/L. More than 94% of lead was recovered in the optimum conditions. The results indicated that the liquid/solid ratio, fluoroboric acid concentration, temperature and leaching time were the most effective parameters on the process efficiency, respectively. Dissolution kinetics studies of lead in the fluoroboric acid were also evaluated. The chemical reaction was determined as the controlling mechanism of reaction at the shrinking core model. The activation energy was determined using Arrhenius model as 5.99 kJ/mol.

This study was conducted to investigate toxic effects of Pb on growth and nutrient uptake in Black gram. Black gram was subjected to seven (5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 & 200 kg-1) levels of lead. Due to Pb toxicity, plant growth was adversely affected and relatively a severe reduction in root biomass was recorded. The Pb accumulation increased with the increase in lead concentrations. The uptake of different nutrients, i.e., N, P, K, Ca and Mg was reduced in black gram due to the lead treatment.

The continuous system of lead adsorption on rice husks was investigated in this paper. A fixed bed study was performed in many tests to investigate the influence of pH, the adsorbent height, the initial concentration of lead, the flow rate and processing time on the lead adsorption process. The results demonstrated that the lead removal capacity decreased when the pH value of the solution and the flow rate increased. The lead removal capacity increased due to the decreased initial concentration of lead. The results showed that the removal capacity increases along with the processing time and the adsorbent height in column. The largest removal was (81%) at pH of 4, the adsorbent height (50 cm), the initial concentration of lead (10 mg/l), the processing time (90 min.) and the flow rate (10 ml/min.). As a result, rice husks can be used to remove the lead instead of expensive commercial adsorbents, due to its availability, inexpensive and perfect adsorption property.

The aim of the study was to compare the levels of cadmium and lead in livers, kidneys and wool / hair / of sheep and goats reared in the vicinity of the steelworks in Nowa Huta in Kraków and in the control field, Rożniatów, in which there was no emitters of heavy metals. Samples were collected post mortem from one-year old animals of one breed (within a species) and one sex, who had lived from birth in the studied areas. Both species were fed with the same fodder and have remained in the same places. Wet mineralization was applied (mixture of nitric acid (V) and chloric (VII) (3: 1)) metal determination was done by a FASA method. The levels of the metals depend on the species, on the test areas and on the collected part of the animal. Tissues from sheep contained more cadmium and lead than the tissue of goats. The highest cadmium content was found in the kidney, lower in the liver, the lowest in the hair / wool of tested animals. Goat kidneys from both areas of research and sheep kidneys from Rożniatów meet consumer standards for cadmium. However, 20% of sheep kidneys sampled from Nowa Huta district exceeded the standards for cadmium. The lead content of both species exceeded the limit in all of the kidneys and livers from Nowa Huta district. In Rożniatów the standards were not fulfilled for all kidneys and livers of goats, and all kidneys and 70% of the livers of sheep.

The zinc and lead industry generates substantial quantities of waste. Among the many types of wastes, such as dust or liquid, a large proportion are solid waste such as slags. The purpose of the study was the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the short rotary kiln slags and slags deposited in a hazardous waste landfill originating from zinc and lead metallurgy. This assessment represents the primary step in evaluating materials such as slags concerning their potential for substantial applications, such as process for metal separation. Additionally, this evaluation forms the basis for a comprehensive environmental study. The concentrations of the four predominant metals – Fe>Pb>Zn>Cu – and accompanying elements – Na>Ca>K>Ni>Mn>Cr – were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) after aqua regia digestion. A large variation was found in the phase analysis of the studied materials based on SEM, XRD, X-ray microanalysis, and BCR sequential extraction. The BCR analysis revealed the occurrence of major metals in four different fractions: acid-soluble, reducible, oxidizable, and residual. Pb was mainly present in the acid-soluble fraction, while Fe, Cu, and Zn were present in the residual fraction.

Recent sediment accumulation rates in Adventfjorden (Svalbard), a small subpolar fjord, were determined by 210Pb and 137Cs dating. Modern rates in the central basin decrease downfjord from 1.87 to 0.87 cm y−1 (2.6 to 1.19 g cm−2 y−1). Comparison of the modern values (1986–2001) with older ones (1963–86) reveals a marked increase in sediment accumulation rates in the last ten years. This correlates well with recent climate changes (warming and increase in precipitation). Comparison with particulate matter flux data indicates that a portion of the sediment is passed on to Isfjorden.

Semivariogram is a half variance diagram of the difference between observations at the location s_i with another location that is as far as h units of distance. Semivariogram is used to describe the correlation of observation sorted by location. This research discusses the theoretical Semivariogram for the Spherical, Gaussian, and Exponential Semivariogram models through the Linear Programming approach. Next, the Semivariogram parameter estimation is studied with the assumption that there are data uncertainties, called the Uncertain Semivariogram. The method used to overcome the uncertainty data is Robust Optimization. The Uncertain Semivariogram using Robust Optimization are solved using the box and ellipsoidal uncertainty set approach. The calculation of the application of the model was carried out using the R software. For the case study, the application of the model used secondary data of Lead pollutant data in the Meuse River floodplains on the borders of France and the Netherlands at 164 locations. Based on the calculation results, the Exponential theoretical Semivariogram model is obtained as the best Semivariogram model, because it has a minimum SSE. Furthermore, the application of the Uncertain Semivariogram model using Robust Optimization on the Semivariogram Exponential model of Lead pollutant data is carried out using the box and ellipsoidal uncertainty set approach which is to obtain computationally tractable results.

Polyacrylamide-zeolite composite was prepared by direct polymerization of polyacrylamide in suspension of β-zeolite. Phytic acid was then immobilized on the composite surface. Fourier transform infrared spektrometry (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Thermal gravimetry (TG) techniques were employed to characterize the synthesized adsorbent. The adsorptive features of the composite and the modifi Ed composite were investigated for the removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution in view of dependency on pH, time, ion concentration, temperature, selectivity, kinetics and reusability. The adsorption isotherms were evaluated with reference to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic of the system was calculated. ΔG<0 indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous. Good compatibility of the adsorption kinetics to the pseudo-second-order model predicted that the rate-controlling step was a chemical sorption. The selectivity experiments showed that the adsorbents were selective toward Pb2+ In the presence of Zn2+ and Cd2+. The reusability of the adsorbent was tested for four regeneration cycles.

A novel tetracarboxylresorcin[4]arene was synthesized and its selective complexing ability towards Pb(II) ions was examined. The influence of several parameters such as pH of aqueous phase, agitation time, extractant and modifier concentrations on solvent extraction of Pb(II) ions from the aque-ous nitrate phase into chloroform organic phase was studied. The stoichiometry of the formed metal-ligand complexes was established by slope analysis. Pb(II) ions were quantitatively extracted in the form of 2:1 Pb(II)-resorcin[4]arene complex from aqueous solutions of pH 5.5 to the solution of ligand in chloroform. Competitive solvent extraction experiments in the presence of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions were also carried out and high selectivity of the extractant towards Pb(II) over Zn(II) and Cd(II) was found. The selectivity order was: Pb(II) >> Cd(II) > Zn(II).

Objectives To identify blood lead predictors and the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in firearm users of public security in Mexico. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was performed on 65 males. We obtained socio-occupational data and determined venous blood lead (blood (B), lead (Pb) – BPb), as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms using the Q-16 questionnaire. A multiple linear regression model was constructed to assess determinants of BPb. Results The mean age in the study group was 34.8 years (standard deviation (SD) = 6.9, range: 21–60); the mean number of years spent in the company amounted to 14 years (SD = 8.5, range: 1–48). Twenty percent of the respondents (N = 13) used leaded glazed clay pottery (lead (Pb), glazed (G), and clay pottery (C) – PbGC) in the kitchen. During practice they fired a mean of 72 shots (SD = 60, range: 20–250), and during their whole duration of employment 5483 shots (SD = 8322.5, range: 200–50 000). The mean BPb was 7.6 μg/dl (SD = 6.8, range: 2.7–51.7). Two caretakers from the firing range had 29.6 μg/dl and 51.7 μg/dl BPb. The subjects who had shooting practice sessions ≥ 12 times a year reported a greater percentage of miscarriages in their partners (24% vs. 0%). Twelve percent of the respondents showed an increase in neuropsychiatric symptoms. The BPb multiple linear regression model explained R² = 44.15%, as follows: those who had ≥ 12 practice sessions per year – β = 0.5339 and those who used PbGC – β = 0.3651. Conclusions Using firearms and PbGC contributes to the increased BPb in the studied personnel. The determinants of BPb were: shooting practices >12 times a year and using PbGC. Blood lead concentrations reported in the study, despite being low, are a health risk, as evidenced by the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Opis:
In this study the effects and mechanism of lead ions influence on wolframite flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) were studied through micro-flotation, adsorption experiments, zeta potential measurements, logarithmic concentration diagram, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed that lead ions could significantly enhance the recovery of wolframite in flotation and adsorption density of collector BHA onto the wolframite surface. The results showed that Pb existed in the forms of lead ion, monohydric lead, and lead hydroxide at the water-wolframite interface respectively, at three pH ranges. They increased the zeta potential of wolframite. However, the zeta potential of wolframite was still negative, resulting in repulsive electrostatic force to anionic collector BHA. Combining with XPS spectra, it revealed the chemisorption of BHA onto the wolframite surface. In addition, PbO or Pb(OH)2 was observed on the wolframite surface due to the reaction between lead ions and wolframite. These reaction products increased the adsorption site of BHA on the wolframite surface because Pb-hydroxamate was found on the wolframite surface.

Zatrucie ołowiem powoduje uszkodzenie: układu nerwowego i krwiotwórczego, krążenia i nerek.
Lead is a soft, flexible and grey metal. In industry, it is used as an ingredient of many alloys, jacketing cables, screens protecting against ionizing radiation and battery plates. Lead and its compounds are highly toxic. Lead can cause damage to the nervous, hematopoietic and circulatory systems, and kidneys. It accumulates in bones. It can cause harm to an unborn child and is reprotoxic. The exposure limit values for lead and its inorganic compounds in the working environment, based on Pb for inhalable fraction, are NDS 0.05 mg/m3 . The aim of this study was to develop a method for determining concentrations of lead and its inorganic compounds (in inhalable fraction) in workplace air in the range from 1/10 to 2 NDS values in accordance with the requirements of Standard No. EN 482. This method involves collecting lead and its inorganic compounds (contained in air in the inhalable fraction of aerosol) on a membrane filter, filter mineralization with concentrated nitric acid and dihydrogen dioxide, and determining lead in a solution prepared for analysis with flame atomic absorption spectrometry with atomization in air-acetylene flame (F-AAS). This method enables determination of lead in the concentration range 0.25–10.00 µg/ml. The obtained calibration curve has a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 1.0000). The detection limit for lead (LOD) is 0.02 µg/ ml and the limit of quantification (LOQ) is 0.07 µg/ ml. Determined coefficient of recovery is 0.99. The developed method enables determination of concentrations of lead and its inorganic compounds in the inhalable fraction in workplace air in the concentration range 0.0035–0.139 mg/m3 (for a 720-L air sample), which represents 0.07–2.8 of NDS and 0.0052–0.208 mg/m3 (for a smaller air sample of 480-L), which represents 0.10–4.2 of NDS. The method is accurate, precise and it meets the requirements of Standard No. EN 482 for procedures for determining chemical agents. The method of determining lead and its inorganic compounds has been recorded as an analytical procedure (appendix).

Opis:
The study area is located within the Silesia-Cracow zinc-lead ore district. Secondary minerals were collected from the reclaimed zinc-lead underground mine in Bolesław and from the currently operated zinc-lead underground mine Olkusz-Pomorzany. The main goal of investigations was the geochemical and mineralogical comparison of weathering zone developed within horst and tectonic graben. Semi-quantitative chemical composition was determined using the SEM-EDS method and quantitative chemical composition was determined employing the EMP microanalysis. Mineralogical investigations were performed with the XRD. The predominant zinc mineral of weathering zone located within tectonic horst is hemimorphite. No primary and secondary lead minerals were observed in this zone. In contrast, the weathering zone within tectonic graben contains secondary carbonate zinc and lead minerals. These differences could result from pervasive sulfide minerals (especially marcasite) in a graben unit, and limestones which are the main gangue rock of this zinc-lead ore.

The objective of the study was to evaluate zinc and lead contamination in the upper, organic layer of the soil around zinc and lead smelting plant KGH "Bolesław" in Bukowno near Olkusz. The study material were samples of the upper layer (0-5 cm) of the soil collected at the distance of 10, 25, 50, 100 150, 200, 250 m, and further from each of the 250 m up to 3 000 m sections in 8 directions: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW. The most contaminated soil samples were found at the distance of up to about 1 000 m from the subject plant. The most polluted is the NE and SW area. Pollution of the NE area is related to wind direction. The SW area could be a zinc and lead ore outcrop, or else, it was contaminated when used as a dumping ground for the waste from the plant in the past. Heavy pollution of this area with zinc and lead could cause serious damage to living organisms in the area close to the plant.

Due to fast-paced technical development, companies are forced to modernise and update their equipment, as well as production planning methods. In the ordering process, the customer is interested not only in product specifications, but also in the manufacturing lead time by which the product will be completed. Therefore, companies strive towards setting an appealing but attainable manufacturing lead date. Manufacturing lead time depends on many different factors; therefore, it is difficult to predict. Estimation of manufacturing lead time is usually based on previous experience. In the following research, manufacturing lead time for tools for aluminium extrusion was estimated with Artificial Intelligence, more precisely, with Neural Networks. The research is based on the following input data; number of cavities, tool type, tool category, order type, number of orders in the last 3 days and tool diameter; while the only output data are the number of working days that are needed to manufacture the tool. An Artificial Neural Network (feed-forward neural network) was noted as a sufficiently accurate method and, therefore, appropriate for implementation in the company

The study was conducted in July - August 2018 with the aim of analyzing the concentration of lead heavy metals (Pb) in water, sediment and macrozoobenthos in the Karangsong waters area, Indramayu Regency. The research method used is a survey method with purposive sampling technique that is the determination of location based on the existence of certain objectives and in accordance with various considerations, then observed the content of lead metal (Pb) in the Central Laboratory of Padjadjaran University. The research was conducted in situ and exsitu. Parameters of insitu research include temperature, pH and DO carried out in Karangsong waters, Indramayu Regency. Exsitu research parameters include testing of lead metal (Pb) on water, sediment and macrozoobenthos conducted at the Central Laboratory of Padjadjaran University. The results showed that the Pb concentration in the Karangsong waters had exceeded the threshold, which ranged between 1,05 – 1,33 mg/l, while the Pb concentration in sediment was higher than the Pb concentration in water. Lead metal in sediment has not exceeded the threshold. The ability of macrozoobenthos to accumulate lead metal in water and sediment (Bioconcentration Factor / BCF) is included in the low accumulative category because BCF is less than 100.

The adsorption behavior of lead species on the hydrated rutile surface was investigated with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. ICP-MS experiments suggested that lead species can be readily absorbed by the rutile powder in water at pH 6.5. From the ICP-MS results and the species distribution of Pb2+, it was concluded that Pb2+ was the major lead species adsorbing at the rutile/water interface at the pH of 6.5. DFT calculation results indicated that Pb2+ could adsorb at four different sites on the surface. At each site, water molecules or OH groups were involved in the reaction with Pb2+. The water molecules/OH groups on the rutile surface play an important role during the adsorption of Pb2+ on the hydrated rutile surface.

The aim of the article was to determine the content of heavy metals (lead) in soils and plants in areas heavily degraded by mining and processing industries. The study was conducted in the area of the municipality of Trzebinia, in the western part of the Małopolska province. Altogether 83 research areas were designated (one area of 25 m2 ) from which the plant material and soil samples were taken from the levels of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. The analysis of soil material was based on the determination of granulometric composition of the soil with the use of the Casagrande method modified by Prószyński [according to the industry standard (BN-78/9180-11), soil reaction in 1M KCl and in water with the use of the potentiometric method, electrolytic conductivity of the soil with the use of the conductometric method, content of organic matter in soil by its annealing using the modified Tiurin method, the total Pb content in the soil using the FAA method. The analysis of plant material was based on the determination of the total content of Pb in plants using the atomic absorption spectrometry. It was found that the mean lead content in the soil for the municipality exceeded the permissible concentrations, stated in national regulations (Journal of Laws 2002), of this element for farmlands. The research conducted on fallows of Trzebinia indicated a positive direction of the relationship between the lead content in the soil layer of 0-20cm and the content of the metal in plants present there. The results of the lead content in the plant material did not exceed the permissible content of the element in animal feed proposed by IUNG (Kabata-Pendias et al. 1993).

Opis:
Transport plays a key role in inventory management since it affects logistic costs as well as environmental performance of the supply chain. Expected value and variability of supply lead time depend on the transportation means adopted, and influence the optimal values of order quantity, reorder level, and safety stock to be adopted. Fast transportation means allow reducing expected value of the lead time; they are characterized by the highest costs of externalities (i.e. air pollutant emission, noise, congestion, accidents). On the contrary, slow transportation means require high inventory level due to large order quantity; in this case costs of externalities tend to decrease. The Sustainable Order Quantity (SOQ) [1] allows identifying optimal order quantity, reorder level, safety stock as well as transportation means which minimize the sum of the logistic and environmental costs in case of stochastic variability of product demand. In this paper, the authors propose a new SOQ analytical model considering stochastic variability of supply lead time (LT). A solution procedure is suggested for solving the proposed model. The approach is applied to a real industrial case study in order to evaluate the benefits of applying it if compared with the traditional one.

Lead, similar to other heavy metals and abiotic factors, causes many unfavorable changes at the subcellular and molecular levels in plant cells. An increased level of superoxide anion in Pisum sativum root cells treated with 1 mM Pb(NO3)2 evidenced oxidative stress conditions. We found increased activities of enzymatic components of the antioxidative system (catalase and superoxide dismutase) in the cytosol, mitochondrial and peroxisomal fractions isolated from root cells of Pisum sativum grown in modified Hoagland medium in the presence of lead ions (0.5 or 1 mM). Two isoenzyme forms of superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD) found in different subcellular compartments of pea roots were more active in Pb-treated plants than in control. Increased amount of alternative oxidase accompanied by an increased activity of this enzyme was found in mitochondria isolated from lead-treated roots. These results show that plants storing excessive amounts of lead in roots defend themselves against the harmful oxidative stress caused by this heavy metal.

This paper examines a supply planning problem for multilevel serial production systems under lead time uncertainties. The techniques used in industry are often based on the assumption that the lead times are known. However, in a supply chain the lead times are often random variables. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the planned lead times on the total cost. An exact performance evaluation technique is developed to calculate the total cost as a function of the planned lead times when the actual lead times are random discrete variables. The sum of the average component holding and tardiness costs at each level, plus the average finished product backlogging cost is considered. Several properties of this function are proven. A numerical example is reported.

The article presents the results of research which describes antagonism between Pb-Zn in selected plant species from the area of Czestochowa – Mirow district (north-western part of the Czestochowa Upland). There were analyzed changes in the ratio of Pb/Zn in different organs of the tested plants as a function of the Zn content changes. The content of metals in the plants and the soil was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry AAS. In all organs of the plants there was observed antagonistic decrease of Pb uptake and accumulation, resulting from the increase in the concentration Zn. Antagonism between Zn and Pb in roots of the tested plants occurred at Zn content of 200–600 μg/g. In turn, antagonism in stems and flowers occurred at lower contents of zinc (100–180 μg/g). In leaves, antagonism between Pb and Zn occurred when Zn was present at the level of 300–800 μg/g. Ex definition of the analyses confirm the presence of antagonism of lead with regard to high levels of Zn. The study also confirmed that the degree of antagonism depends on the plant species.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań opisujące występowanie antagonizmu pomiędzy Pb-Zn w wybranych gatunkach roślin z terenu Częstochowy – dzielnica Mirów (północno-zachodnia część Wyżyny Częstochowskiej). Analizowano zmiany ilorazu zawartości Pb/Zn w poszczególnych organach badanych roślin jako funkcję zmian zawartości Zn. Zawartość metali w roślinach i w glebie została określona metodą atomowej spektrofotometrii absorpcyjnej AAS. We wszystkich organach roślin obserwowano antagonistyczny spadek pobierania i kumulacji Pb, będący skutkiem wzrostu koncentracji Zn.

The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. An earlier and precise characterization of an individual response is obligatory in order to assess the possible risks for human health. Biomarkers may fill important gaps in the path from exposure to a disease. Specifically speaking, emerging (DNA double strand breaks and telomeric DNA erosion) and validated (micronuclei induction and chromosomal aberrations) biomarkers of genotoxicity seem to provide evidence for the assessment of molecular and cellular damage. Moreover, identification of genetic variability with a key role in modulating genotoxic damage may help minimize risks for susceptible subjects. Further investigations are naturally needed to properly define their diagnostic and/or prognostic value as “early warning” signs of a long-term risk for a subsequent clinically overt disease.

Opis:
In northeastern Vietnam, the Khau Loc zone is considered to have high potential for lead-zinc mineralization. The lead isotope data for 18 galena samples and 18 ones of δ34S isotope data (including galena and pyrite samples) were collected from lead-zinc ore deposits in some areas in the Khau Loc zone, including Phia Dam, Khuoi Man, Ban Lin, Lung Dam, and Ta Pan. These were employed to investigate the sulfur and lead isotope geochemical characteristics of Pb-Zn deposits and their significance in this study. The samples were analyzed using the LA-ICP-MS to show that the Pb isotopic ratios of 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb in the galena samples range from 17.8908 to 18.6012, 15.5794 to 16.1025, 38.4420 to 39.2118, with the average values of 18.296, 15.749, and 38.812, respectively. The pyrite and galena samples had the δ34S isotope, ranging from 9.0 to 15.106. The sulfur isotope systematics implies that most of the lead-zinc ore formations originated from marine sedimentary evaporation deposits and magmatic intrusion-volcanic eruption sources rich in silica. The distribution of lead isotopic ratios had a well-defined cluster for each deposit, indicating the formation of lead-zinc deposits and lower crust and orogen trends. In addition, these findings of lead isotopic ratios and δ34S isotopes proved that the Khau Loc zone is an activated structure with continuous growth in continental crust thickness during the early Proterozoic and Cenozoic periods. Furthermore, the study results also presented the evolution of material sources involved in the formation of lead-zinc ores in the Khau Loc zone.

The present work measures the adsorption capacity of sugarcane bagasse to remove excess lead from groundwater. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption equilibrium, and the effects of four parameters (pH, adsorbent dosage, equilibrium time and particle size) on the adsorption of lead were investigated. Characterization of the adsorbent was carried out through SEM and FTIR instruments. Results confirm that the adsorption of lead takes place successfully on the surface of the adsorbent. The maximum efficiency of adsorption is up to 50% achieved in 5g adsorbent dosage, at an optimum pH 5, with a contact time of 120 minutes and 53 μm adsorbent size at 38.

Opis:
The permissible threshold level of lead in blood (Pb-B) is currently established at 5 mg dL-1, but evidence suggests that it is impossible to determine the safety threshold for lead (Pb) and any exposure, especially in children, must be considered as potentially harmful. Methods used to reduce the concentration of Pb in blood (e.g. EDTA, penicillamine) are not always effective and are associated with serious side effects. One of the proposed dietary supplements in the case of exposure to Pb and low blood Pb concentrations is zinc (Zn), but the published literature on its effectiveness is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to clarify whether Zn supplementation may help reduce the concentration of Pb in the blood and tissues of rats, at the Pb-B level previously recognized as safe. Tests were performed on 6-8 week old male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into control and experimental groups: Group C – rats receiving drinking water ad libitum for 4 weeks; Group Pb – rats receiving Pb acetate 0.1% (PbAc) in drinking water ad libitum for 4 weeks; Group Zn – rats receiving ZnCO3 300 mg kg-1 diet for 4 weeks; Group Pb+Zn – rats receiving PbAc in drinking water ad libitum plus 300 mg ZnCO3 kg-1 diet for 4 weeks. The applied dose of 300 mg of ZnCO3 kg-1 diet results in a high but non-toxic Zn level. The concentrations of Pb and Zn in blood, plasma, liver and bone were determined by emission spectrometry in inductively coupled argon plasma (ICP OES). Incidental exposure of adult rats to Pb at doses resulting in the level of Pb in blood below the previously recognized as safe one caused: (i) increased Pb concentration in the bones and plasma and its reduction in the whole blood and liver (ii) simultaneous supplementation of rats exposed to Pb with a high but non-toxic dose of zinc did not result in the reduction of the Pb concentration in the blood and tissues of rats, nor did it induce any changes in the distribution of Pb in the examined tissues (iii) supplementation of diets with a high but non-toxic dose of Zn is not an effective method of reducing the concentration of Pb in blood at Pb-B previously recognized as safe. However, the therapy consisting of zinc supplementation to support the action of chelators could be crucial for the elimination of Pb from the body.

Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal often discovered to be polluting the water areas. One of the efforts made to overcome the heavy metal pollution in estuaries was phytoremediation technique using mangroves. The Wonorejo River was one of the rivers that received industrial waste loads. There were various types of mangrove plant species at the estuary of the Wonorejo River. The location of this research was divided into 3 monitoring stations (A, B, C). Station A was directly adjacent to the estuary, as location C was farther away and very close to the sea. However, station B was located between location A and B. This study aimed to determine the ability of mangrove in remediating and illustrating the distribution of Pb, at the Wonorejo River estuary. Moreover, it also aimed to determine the values of Bioconcentration (BCF) and Translocation (TF) Factors in the ability of Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Sonneratia caseolaris, Avicennia lanata, and Rhizophora stylosa to accumulate Pb. The samples were the roots, stems, and leaves of mangroves, with the water and sediment at the Wonorejo estuary, as all solid materials were also extracted. The samples were analyzed for heavy metal concentration, using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the highest average Pb concentration for waters and sediments was obtained at station C and A, with values of 0.069 mg/L and 4.22 mg/kg, respectively. It was further observed that the Pb concentration in the water was lower than in sediment, indicating that the metal was accumulated in the sediments. On the basis of the BCF value, the most effective mangrove involved in the accumulation of Pb was A. alba. The highest values of TF for both root to stems and to leaves in the accumulation of Pb was also discovered in A. lanata and A. alba mangroves, respectively. On the basis of the Pb distribution mapping, the concentration of the metal was shown to increased, as the research location moved further away from the estuary. Conclusively, each type of mangrove had different ability to accumulate and translocate Pb in its body, with the potential of using those plants as phytoremediaton agents for the metal.

The content of assimilation pigments, the rate the CO2 assimilation, transpiration, the indices of relative water content and the deficit of water saturation and the content of lead in the nutrient solution. The studied physiological parameters in common osier var. Jorr were differentiated by the rate of lead ions in the nutrient solution. The Jorr variety of common osier was characterised by good values of the determined physiological parameters under stressful conditions at a large accumulation of lead. This suggests that it shows quite a high tolerance to the stress caused by contamination of the subsoil with lead.

During archaeological research of early medieval settlement in Dąbrowa Górnicza - Łosień, a hoard of silver coins and silver smelts was discovered, over 1000 items in total. There was also found a mining shaft and numerous furnaces in the settlement area, confirming its mining and metallurgical character. The settlement development was based on excavating and smelting rich lead ores, containing significant amount of silver. Silver was separated from lead in successive stages with the help of cupellation. The paper presents the analyses of silver smelts and coins coming from the hoard. Optical and scanning microscopy were applied as well as the methods of chemical content analysis by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy in microareas (SEM-EDS), and also phase analysis with the help of X-Ray Diffraction method (XRD). The impurities of the silver clumps testify to the fact that they are semi-products. After refining and modifying the material by adding copper, denars were minted from it. The silver coins belonging the hoard are made from relatively pure material, including a small lead. An insignificant amount of other metallic elements testifies to the good quality of the raw material and efficiency of silver production in the early Middle Ages.

Opis:
Background. The dietary intake of harmful elements, particularly lead and cadmium constitutes a health threat and essential measures should be undertaken to reduce consumer exposure. The latest risk assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have indicated that the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) for lead and cadmium do not ensure health safety and their review had to be undertaken. Migration from ceramics and glassware intended for food contact is an important source of lead and cadmium intake. Objectives. To study the release of lead and cadmium from ceramics and glassware (including decorated products) intended for food contact that are available on the Polish market and to assess the resulting health risk to the consumer. Materials and Methods. Ceramics and glassware (mainly decorated) were sampled from the Polish market during 2010- 2012 throughout the country by staff of the Sanitary-Epidemiological Stations in accordance with monitoring procedures and guidelines designed by the National Institute of Public Health-National Institute of Hygiene. Migration of lead and cadmium was measured by incubating the samples with 4% acetic acid for 24 hours at a temperature of 22±2ºC in the dark. Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS) was used to measure these elements in food simulant according to a validated and accredited method (PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025). Results. 1273 samples of ceramics and glass wares were analysed in 2010-2012. Lead and cadmium release were usually found to be below analytical detection limits. Permissible migration limits (as prescribed by the legislation) of these metals were rarely exceeded and were reported mainly in articles imported from outside the EU. Two imported and decorated ceramic flat plates released lead at 0.9 and 11.9 mg/dm2 (limit 0.8 mg/dm2) and 5 imported deep plates gave migration values of 4.7 mg/L, 4.9 mg/L, 5.6 mg/L, 6.1 mg/L, 8.6 mg/L (limit 4.0 mg/L). Lead migrations from ceramic ware rims above the 2.0 mg per product limit (as established in Polish Standard PN-B-13210:1997 [16]) were observed in 4 samples, at 2.1, 3.7, 4.2 and 14.4 mg per product, respectively. Migrations of cadmium from the ceramic samples’ rims were within permissible limits. Majority of high migration results were obtained for decorated rims of glass vessels for beverages. The highest migration from the rim of an imported glass mug was reported at 163.8 mg/product for lead and at 8.96 mg/product for cadmium. Risk assessment indicated that exposures to lead and cadmium released from ceramic wares based on the migration limits set by the EU legislation lead to human intake close to, or exceeding reference doses. For a 20 kg b.w. child the lead BMDL01 value could thus be exceeded by over 30-fold and the cadmium TWI value 4-fold. Conclusions. Review of EU legislation applicable to lead and cadmium migration limits from ceramics is necessary with an intention to lower such limits. The limits applied to the rims of ceramics and glassware intended for beverages should be included. The release of lead and cadmium at the maximum permissible levels for ceramics may lead to uptakes becoming hazardous to human health. Appropriate measures are thus necessary to reduce sources of exposure.
Wprowadzenie. Bezpieczeństwa Żywności (EFSA) i Połączony Komitet Ekspertów FAO/WHO ds. Materiał i metody. Migrację ołowiu i kadmu z próbek wyrobów ceramicznych i szklanych przeprowadzano do 4% kwasu octowego przez 24 godziny w temperaturze 22±2ºC (w ciemności). Zawartość ołowiu i kadmu w płynie modelowym po migracji oznaczano metodą płomieniowej atomowej spektrometrii absorpcyjnej (FAAS), zwalidowaną i akredytowaną zgodnie z PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025. Wyniki. W latach 2010-2012 zbadano 1273 próbki wyrobów ceramicznych i szklanych. Uwalnianie ołowiu i kadmu z naczyń ceramicznych i szklanych było przeważnie poniżej granic wykrywalności stosowanych metod analitycznych. Przekroczenia limitów migracji tych metali z naczyń ceramicznych określonych w ustawodawstwie stwierdzano rzadko, głównie z wyrobów z importu (spoza UE). Z 2 naczyń ceramicznych płaskich zdobionych (z importu) ilości uwalnianego ołowiu wynosiły 0,9 mg/dm2 i 11,9 mg/dm2 (limit 0,8 mg/dm2). Z 5 naczyń ceramicznych głębokich (z importu) migracja ołowiu powyżej limitu (4,0 mg/L) wynosiła: 4,7 mg/L; 4,9 mg/L; 5,6 mg/L; 6,1 mg/L; 8,6 mg/L. Migrację ołowiu z obrzeży naczyń ceramicznych w ilościach przekraczających limit (2,0 mg/wyrób), podany w polskiej normie PN-B-13210:1997 [16], stwierdzono z 4 wyrobów i wynosiła ona: 2,1 mg/wyrób 3,7 mg/wyrób, 4,2 mg/wyrób, 14,4 mg/wyrób. Nie stwierdzono migracji kadmu z obrzeży badanych naczyń ceramicznych w ilości przekraczającej limit. Największą migrację ołowiu wynoszącą 163,8 mg/wyrób i kadmu 8,96 mg/wyrób stwierdzono z obrzeża kubka szklanego, z importu.

Cataract is one of the main causes of vision loss. So far, it has been found that one of the causes of cataract formation is the accumulation of heavy metals in ocular tissues and environmental pollution. Research material consisted of blood from healthy volunteers (n = 81; Mogilno Lakeland) and those suffering from cataract (n = 90) from Ophthalmology Clinic, Bydgoszcz (2013, 2016). Samples were prepared in order to obtain plasma, which was used to analyze Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, and Hg concentration (ICP-MS). The purpose of this study is to show the interaction of cataract with cadmium and lead during initial pro-antioxidative reactions and to study element-element interactions. To this end, we analyzed physiological mechanisms that aim to stop the destructive effects of toxic metals. We have shown that the action of zinc, copper and manganese is antioxidant. Concentration of these elements is higher (α = 0. 05, p < 0.05) in the cataract group than in the control. We found interactions Fe-Cu-Zn-Mn-Pb-Cd-Hg. Cd and Pb show a negative effect on the eye tissue and generate pathophysiological changes leading to lens opacity and influence the destabilization of pro-antioxidant reactions. Correlations of elements in the control (Cd-Zn: R = 0.240; Cd-Cu: R = 0.316) and in the sick group (Cd-Cu; R = 0.329) were significant. On the basis of our research we found that there are numerous relationships between the concentrations of chemical elements in the patients with cataracts and the controls. Significant role of antagonisms with cadmium and lead has been demonstrated; these elements contribute to the gradual development of cataract. A correlation between elements exhibiting pro-antioxidant activity in the interactions with cadmium and lead (p=0.000) can be a source of cataract changes. The differences in Cd and Pb concentration and their interactions with elements between the control and sick groups can be considered as a factor for the development of cataract.

Opis:
This paper proposes a method that machines the race of high-lead ball screw nuts, which is difficult to machine using the existing geometrical machining method, without any interferences and changes in its load rating in order to perform the high-speed in ball screws. This study calculates the inclination angle of the axis of the grinding stone for avoiding the contact of the axis to the inner diamete of the nut and determines the shape of the grinding stone through changing the inclination angle and dressing curvature determined in a dressing device Then, the grinding condition will be determined by measuring the shape meter of the screw race for solving the problem. Also, the surface roughness of the grinded surface was measured using a surface roughness tester, and check with applying a grinding process of product not being high-lead ball screw.

Lead-free alloys containing various amounts of zinc (4.5%, 9%, 13%) and constant copper addition (1%) were discussed. The results of microstructure examinations carried out by light microscopy (qualitative and quantitative) and by SEM were presented. In the light microscopy, a combinatorial method was used for the quantitative evaluation of microstructure. In general, this method is based on the phase quanta theory according to which every microstructure can be treated as an arrangement of phases/structural components in the matrix material. Based on this method, selected geometrical parameters of the alloy microstructure were determined. SEM examinations were based on chemical analyses carried out in microregions by EDS technique. The aim of the analyses was to identify the intermetallic phases/compounds occurring in the examined alloys. In fatigue testing, a modified low cycle fatigue test method (MLCF) was used. Its undeniable advantage is the fact that each time, using one sample only, several mechanical parameters can be estimated. As a result of structure examinations, the effect of alloying elements on the formation of intermetallic phases and compounds identified in the examined lead-free alloys was determined. In turn, the results of mechanical tests showed the effect of intermetallic phases identified in the examined alloys on their fatigue life. Some concepts and advantages of the use of the combinatorial and MLCF methods in materials research were also presented.

Investigation of selective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from acidic nitrate aqueous solutions using transport across polymer inclusion membranes PIMs was performed. The sulphur analogus of phosphinic acids, i.e. bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (1) and tert-butyl(phenyl)- phosphinothioic acid (2) as well as their mixture were incorporated into polymer inclusion membranes composed of cellulose triacetate as a support and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether as a plasticizer. In the experi-ments the transport of Cu(II) across PIM with 1 was rapid and complete, however the lead(II) removal increased with increased membrane saturation. Selective transport of Cu(II) over Pb(II) through PIMs with binary carrier system (1 + 2) was observed; the selectivity order was: Cu(II) >> Pb(II). At tempera-ture of 50C the selectivity coefficient Cu(II)/Pb(II) for membrane with binary carriers was the highest and was equal to 758.

Opis:
Objectives Industrially contaminated sites (ICS) represent an important public health issue in European countries. The Silesian Voivodeship, the region located in the southern part of Poland, the historical center of industry, has many sites that meet ICS criteria. Most of them are landfills containing lead, cadmium and zinc. Material and Methods The aim of the study has been to evaluate determinants of lead and cadmium blood levels for preschool children living in the vicinity of selected environmental hazards in Piekary Śląskie, the city located in the region of Silesia. Data about exposure was obtained from the parental questionnaire and was verified by levels of biomarkers in children’s blood. Finally, 678 preschool children were studied. Results Obtained results have confirmed that the statistically significant higher level of lead in blood has been revealed in the case of younger children whose fathers have a higher level of education and whose mothers smoke cigarettes at home, as well as for those living in the vicinity of any environmental hazard. In the case of cadmium, a higher level of the biomarker has been reported for older children who rather do not live close to any environmental hazard. We have recognized 30% of children with blood lead level (PbB) exceeding 2 μg/dl and 0.8% of children with blood cadmium level (CdB) exceeding the reference value (0.5 μg/l). Conclusions Own observation has confirmed that preschool children living in Piekary Śląskie are still exposed to heavy metals existing in environment. The source of the higher level in blood is not only the hazardous vicinity in the place of residence but also well-known factors associated with the age of children, parental life style and educational background. The parental questionnaire could be useful to identify potential determinants of exposure to lead and cadmium, however exposure must be verified by measurement of a proper biomarker. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie różnych sposobów realizacji filtrów cyfrowych w sterownikach przemysłowych serii S7-1500 firmy Siemens. Filtry te są niedostępne w dedykowanym oprogramowaniu – TIA Portal, a w warunkach przemysłowych często zachodzi konieczność stosowania filtracji cyfrowej. Wspomniane oprogramowanie zawiera jednak blok Lead-Lag (s7-1500, ET 200SP CPU), w oparciu o który można realizować filtrację pierwszego rzędu. Wykorzystując jednak algebrę schematów blokowych można zwiększyć możliwości budowania filtrów o nieskończonej odpowiedzi impulsowej IIR. W artykule przedstawiono realizację filtrów 1. i 2. rzędu, a tworząc kaskadowe przetwarzanie danych przez takie podstawowe bloki można uzyskać filtry wyższego rzędu, np. 5.
The aim of the article is to present different ways of digital filters realization in S7 series industrial controllers (PLC) of Siemens company. These filters are unavailable in dedicated software - TIA Portal V15 and in industrial conditions it is often necessary to use digital filtering. This software contains a lead-lag instruction that can be used to implement first order filtration, but with block diagrams algebra you can increase filters capabilities. The article presents the implementation of 1st and 2nd order filters, and creating a cascading these block data processing can be obtained filters of a higher order, such as 5. The presented test results for various parameters of the Lead-Lag confirm the correctness of the applied solution and develop the use of programmable controllers in industry.

Background: The aim of the present study was to explore the connection between lead toxicity and the activity of xanthine oxidase (XO). In addition, we indicated the uric acid (UA) and creatinine levels and concentration of erythrocyte malondialdehyde (MDA) to estimate oxidative stress intensity. Materials and Methods: The examined group consisted of 125 healthy male employees of zinc and lead works. The examined group was divided into tertiles according to blood lead levels. In the collected blood samples, concentrations of lead-exposure indices, UA, creatinine, and MDA as well as activity of XO were measured concomitantly. The control group consisted of 32 healthy male administrative workers who were exposed to lead only environmentally. Results: XO activity and MDA level were significantly elevated in all tertiles compared to the control group. Creatinine level was significantly elevated in the medium and high tertiles. However, the level of UA was significantly elevated in the high tertile, while in the low and medium tertile only a tendency toward higher values was observed. Conclusions: Occupational exposure to lead induces activity of XO. This induction may contribute to the observed simultaneously increased oxidative stress, measured as MDA level, and the increased level of UA.
Dodatkowo wyznaczono stężenia kwasu moczowego (uric acid - UA) i kreatyniny. Natężenie stresu oksydacyjnego oszacowano na podstawie stężenia dialdehydu malonowego (malondialdehyde - MDA). Materiał i metody: Grupę badaną stanowiło 125 zdrowych pracowników huty cynku i ołowiu. Wyniki: Aktywność XO i stężenie MDA były znamiennie wyższe we wszystkich tercylach w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną. Med. Opis:
The paper describes the studies of ternary SnZn9Al1.5 lead-free alloy from the viewpoint of its mechanical behavior as well as microstructure examined by the light and scanning electron microscopy. The authors focused their attention specifically on the fatigue parameters determined by the original modified low-cycle fatigue method (MLCF), which in a quick and economically justified way allows determination of a number of mechanical parameters based on the measurement data coming from one test sample only. The effect of the addition of 1.5% Al to the binary eutectic SnZn9 alloy on its microstructure and the obtained level of mechanical parameters was analyzed. The phases and intermetallic compounds occurring in the alloy were identified based on the chemical analysis carried out in micro-areas by the SEM/EDS technique. It was shown that the addition of 1.5% Al to the binary eutectic SnZn9 alloy resulted in a more favorable microstructure and consequently had a positive effect on the mechanical parameters of the alloy. Based on the conducted research, it was recommended to use a combinatorial method based on the phase quanta theory to quickly evaluate the microstructure and the original MLCF method to determine a number of mechanical parameters.

Opis:
Despite the invention of new chemical sources of electricity, acid batteries, due to their price, are still widely used. They are also used on conventional submarines as the primary source of power. Due to their properties, lead-acid batteries require a lot of attention during their operation, including charging according to fairly rigorous rules. Because of their special operating conditions on submarines, it is not possible to maintain optimal conditions for such batteries. The battery’s integrated management system allows for remote and online monitoring. However, it gives only general information about how much energy remains in the battery for the use in operating conditions. The submarine’s operational capabilities, such as range and operation time, depend to a great extent on battery capacity, therefore, the information of its condition and status is very important. The proposed method of evaluating the capacity of lead-acid batteries allows them to be processed during their operation, without the need of a time-consuming and expensive capacity test. The authors proposed an original algorithm for evaluating the battery capacity, based on measurement data from a typical monitoring system, assembled with a battery on a ship. The measurements needed to implement the proposed algorithm are already implemented in the existing battery monitoring system - no additional equipment is required. Based on the results of the proposed method, it will be possible to easily determine how much energy is available for the submarine, what is crucial in planning combat missions at the sea.
Zaproponowana metoda oceny pojemności akumulatorów kwasowo-ołowiowych umożliwia kontrolę stanu baterii w trakcie jej eksploatacji, bez konieczności przeprowadzania czasochłonnej i kosztownej próby pojemności.

Opis:
Lead ores, usually containing silver, can be found in most European countries. It was the Romans who first mined lead extensively. They found many uses for it and developed techniques to extract the silver. However, the water table frequently determined the depth of Roman mining operations. In the 19th century, Spain became an important source of lead. Many of the mines had hardly been worked since the Romans and the relatively un-worked lead veins at Linares (Jaén Province), soon attracted companies, from Britain, France and Germany, and they introduced new technology into the area that allowed the mine working to go deeper. One of these mines La Tortilla mine, located to the west of the town, and managed by an Englishman, Thomas Sopwith junior was one of the many successful mines in the area. By 1880 an extensive lead smelting works had been established adjacent to the mine that produced large tonnages of lead ingots for export. Until recently, no lead ingots from the Linares area were known to have survived. However, it was inevitably some ingots would get lost in transit. The exploration of a shipwreck in 2005 revealed a large consignment of ingots manufactured at the La Tortilla smelter. This was as important discovery as the cargo represented the only known collection of ingots manufactured in Linares. This is the tale of two of those lead ingots.
Rudy ołowiu, zwykle zawierające srebro, można znaleźć w większości krajów europejskich. To Rzymianie najpierw ekstensywnie wydobywali ołów. Znaleźli wiele zastosowań i opracowali techniki ekstrakcji srebra.
