    The work is devoted to the interwar literary and social publicism by Irena Krzywicka. It is divided into four chapters. These are actually separate studies related to one another in the form of growing and expansion. The aim of the first study is to present a wide cultural context from which Krzywicka’s consciousness and literary output arise. In its historical aspect the following periods have been distinguished: growing up in the exile family of intelligentsia, education and marriage with Jerzy Krzywicki, the son of Ludwik Krzywicki, a great scholar; cooperation with the newspapers “Blok” [Bloc] and “Wiadomości Literackie” [Literary News] (since 1924); friendship with Tadeusz Żeleński-Boy (since 1928). In its structural aspect Jewishness, avant-garde, sociology and socialism have been distinguished. The second study is Genealogy where the genres of intellectual prose by Krzywicka like interviews, literary and theatre reviews, feature articles and court reports have been analysed and interpreted. After Genealogy there is Ideology, that is the chapter devoted to “what” Krzywicka managed to say about the contemporary literature and morals. The subject of the last chapter, Archeology, is the interwar reception of Krzywicka’s views expressed in newspaper articles. The ‘braces’ of A Conscious Life are constituted by Introduction (the presentation of the research state on publicism by Krzywicka and the aim of the author’s book – showing the continuity of the Polish feminist movement) and Conclusion. The last part of it is the catalogue of the interwar newspaper articles by Krzywicka. Translated by Joanna Witkowska

    In the review of a book Mesjański logos Europy. Mariana Zdziechowskiego i Stanisława Brzozowskiego dyskursy o kulturze Zachodu (Częstochowa, 2012) by Artur Żywiołek, the author presents the monograph as a dissertation in the trend of post-secular thought. The idea of messianism is crucial here (in connection with essayist works of Marian Zdziechowski), as well as the “messianic” category, used to describe texts by Stanisław Brzozowski. In the case of Brzozowski, “messianism” does not describe an idea stance, but turns out to be a mood of critical thought, aimed at overcoming modernity. The author believes that introducing the messianic category is the monograph’s advantage, but also points to paradoxes in the attitude of Artur Żywiołek, who clearly favored these intellectual pursuits within a widely understood modernity, which revalued the community category, the sense-making logos, and sought a way to metaphysically establish the historical experience.
    Dans le compte rendu du livre d’Artur Żywiołek, intitulé Mesjański logos Europy. Mariana Zdziechowskiego i Stanisława Brzozowskiego dyskursy o kulturze Zachodu (Częstochowa 2012) [Le logos messianique de l’Europe. Les discours de Marian Zdziechowski et de Stanisław Brzozowski sur la culture de l’Occident], l’auteur décrit la monographie ne question dans les catégories de la réflexion post-séculaire. La notion de messianisme est une référence majeure (liée aux essais de Marian Zdziechowski) et la catégorie de « messianité » qui permet de décrire les textes de Stanisław Brzozowski. En ce qui concerne Brzozowski, la „messianité” ne définit pas la positition idéologique, mais elle être le mode (mood) de réflexion critique visant à surmonter la modernité. L’auteur du compte rendu trouve que l’emploi de la catégorie de « messianité » détermine la valeur de la monographie, mais aussi, il souligne les paradoxes de l’attitude d’Artur Żywiołek qui favorise visiblement ces aspirations intellectuelles dans le contexte de la modernité au sens large du terme. Elles ont revalorisé la catégorie de la communauté et du logos orientant le sens ; elles ont cherché un moyen d’établir, d’une façon métaphysique, l’expérience historique.

The issues raised in this erudite and formally complex piece include such fundamental questions as: in what sense do the fictional worlds resemble the non-fictional one, and how do we inhabit them? What’s the relationship between immersion and interpretation? What real-life figures can help us imagine or visualise our intimate yet inherently social relationship with the fictional (are we guests, dwellers, passersby...)? Uniłowski looks for answers in contemporary Marxist criticism (Eagleton, Jameson, Berardi), sci-fi and fantasy writing (Lem, Sapkowski, Martin), as well as modern continental philosophy (Gadamer, Heidegger) and – in the last part of the essay – contemporary game studies. We’re happy to be able to present Uniłowski’s piece in two versions, the original Polish as well as its English translation (by Jakob Ziguras). In order to preserve the unmistakable flow of Uniłowski’s thought in English, small changes were introduced – with the author’s full approval – in the English version. We trust that our Polish-speaking readers will fin the comparison of the two versions interesting and instructive, as they seem to give a unique insight into Uniłowski’s writing process.

    Krzysztof Uniłowski zmarł na początku grudnia. Przez ostatnie dwadzieścia lat był wśrod kluczowych figur polskiego literaturoznawstwa. Pisząc na bardzo zróżnicowane tematy - od recenzji współczesnych polskich powieści po eseje o ideach nowoczesności, od klasowo podbudowanych analiz fantastyki i seriali telewizyjnych po komentarze dotyczące polityczności i etosu krytyki literackiej - Uniłowski rozwinął imponującą i wyjątkową krytyczną perspektywę, a wręcz szczególny język krytyki, który zainspirował - i bez wątpienia nadal będzie inspirować - krytyków wszystkich pokoleń. W swojej pracy Uniłowski czerpał chętnie z materializmu historycznego, stale balansując swoje intuicyjne skupienie na tym, co polityczne (w szczególności na kategorii klasy) z równie intuicyjnym przekonaniem co do niezastępowalności formy literackiej. Chociaż nie zawsze się z nim zgadzaliśmy - co jest na lewicy normą, jeśli nie tradycją - to jako redaktorzy i redaktorki „Praktyki Teoretycznej” cieszymy się, mogąc nazwać go nie tylko punktem odniesienia, ale towarzyszem. Uniłowski zmarł w trakcie końcowych prac nad esejem, który prezentujemy poniżej. Niestety, nie zdążył przesłać nam gotowego abstraktu/streszczenia, musimy więc sami podjąć próbę podsumowania jego głównych punktów. Kwestie podniesione w tym erudycyjnym i formalnie złożonym artykule dotyczą spraw zasadniczych: w jakim sensie fikcyjne światy przypominają świat niefikcyjny, i w jaki sposób owe światy zamieszkujemy? Jak wygląda relacja między imersją i interpretacją? Jakie figury mogą pomóc nam w wyobrażeniu sobie - zwizualizowaniu - naszej intymnej, lecz przecież nieuchronnie społecznej relacji z tym, co fikcyjne (czy jesteśmy gośćmi, mieszkańcami, przechodniami...)? Uniłowski szuka odpowiedzi we współczesnej krytyce marksistowskiej (Eagleton, Jameson, Berardi), w pisarstwie sci-fi i fantasy (Lem, Sapkowski, Martin), a także w nowoczesnej filozofii kontynentalnej (Gadamer, Heidegger) oraz - w ostatniej części eseju - we współczesnych badaniach gier. Cieszymy się, mogąc przedstawić artykuł Uniłowskiego w dwóch wersjach - w polskim oryginale oraz w angielskim tłumaczeniu (autorstwa Jakoba Zigurasa). Po to, by zachować trudny do pomylenia flow myśli Uniłowskiego w języku angielskim, do tekstu wprowadzono na etapie tłumaczenia - przy pełnej współpracy autora - drobne zmiany. Mamy nadzieję, że dla naszych polskojęzycznych czytelniczek i czytelników porównanie obu wersji okaże się ciekawe i pożyteczne - wydaje sie bowiem oferować szczególny wgląd w warsztat pisarski Uniłowskiego.

    In Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet (2008), the first novel by Sylwia Chutnik (born in 1979), all protagonists bear traits of uncanniness. Her female characters reside between life and death, real life and nightmare, day and night, the acceptable and the (socially) forbidden. They are also bordering on madness. These motives, however, are presented by the author as comic, and what is more, in a manner resembling the game of cognitive perspectives in Romantic literature. Like a Romantic ballad-writer, the author’s narrator either enters the imaginary world vouching for its reality, or she undermines it, discreetly suggesting the fictional and literary nature of a story. The Romantic aesthetics has not, however, been revised by Chutnik, but used similarly to Umberto Eco’s notion of intertextual irony. Chutnik emphasizes her distance toward employed conventions (if only because of their historic character). As a result, she creates an ironic variation of the identity novel, which proves only partial identification of Chutnik’s writings with the prevailing narrative models. However indispensable these models are, their validity is totally arguable.
    Dans Kieszkonkowy atlas kobiet (2008), premier roman de Sylwia Chutnik (née en 1979), toutes les héroïnes les plus importantes portent les marques de l’insolite. Elles figurent comme des personnages se trouvant à la charnière de la vie et de la mort, de l’état de veille et du rêve-cauchemar, du jour et de la nuit, de l’admissible et de l’interdit (au niveau social). Elles frôlent également la folie. Cependant, l’écrivaine donne à ces motifs un caractère comique, et elle le fait de la façon qui évoque le jeu des perspectives cognitives dans la littérature romantique. À l’instar des auteurs romantiques de ballades, le narrateur tantôt pénètre dans l’univers représenté et affirme son caractère réel, tantôt il le met en question tout en soulignant d’une façon discrète le caractère fictif et littéraire du récit. Toutefois, l’esthétique romantique n’a pas été actualisée par Chutnik, mais elle a été réalisée d’une manière qui correspond à la notion de l’ironie intertextuelle introduite par Umberto Eco. Or, l’auteure marque la distance par rapport aux conventions rapportées (que ce soit à cause de leur caractère historique). En effet, l’écrivaine construit une variante ironique du récit identitaire témoignant d’une identification incomplète de la production littéraire de Chutnik aux narrations prédominantes ; même si l’on ne peut pas se passer de ces narrations-ci, leur validité est fort discutable.

    W artykule przedstawiono analizę wybranych metafor stosowanych przez Krzysztofa Uniłowskiego w jego dyskursie krytycznoliterackim. Punktem wyjścia badania jest założenie, że metafory używane są przez krytyków jako strategia komunikacyjna. Treści tekstów krytycznoliterackich Krzysztofa Uniłowskiego zostały poddane analizie opartej na przesłankach kognitywistycznych, uwzględniającej semiologię oraz performatywny wymiar metafor. Pierwszym przykładem metafory jest obraz „przepaści PRL-u” ujmowany w terminach geograficzno-topologicznych. Drugim przykładem jest „reguła przełamania”, ukazująca literaturę modernizmu w odniesieniu do prawa naturalnego. Następnie analizowany jest memetyczny aspekt metafor. Zabieg ten umożliwił Uniłowskiemu zapożyczenie instrukcji z innej dziedziny naukowej na potrzeby rozwiązania problemu reguły modernizmu – do literaturoznawstwa przeniesiona została terminologia matematyczna. Autorka artykułu zmierza do konkluzji o interdyscyplinarnym charakterze krytyki, umiejscowionej pomiędzy literaturą, nauką i publicystyką. Taka pozycja dyskursu krytycznego wymaga od niego przeprowadzania badań w formie publicznej prezentacji wywodu z pomocą odpowiednich zabiegów językowych. 
    This article offers an analysis of selected metaphors used by Krzysztof Uniłowski in his literary-critical discourse. The underlying assumption is that metaphors used by critics play a vital role in their overall communication strategy. The texts that represent Krzysztof Uniłowski’s literary criticism have been analyzed through the lens of cognitivism, but also takes into account semiology and the performative dimension of metaphors. The first example of metaphor is the image of the “abyss of the PRL” (the People’s Republic of Poland), regarded in geographical-topological terms. Another example is “the rule of overcoming”, which represents modernist literature in its relation to natural law. Next, the article analyses the memetic aspect of metaphors. This approach has allowed Uniłowski to borrow insight from the hard sciences, which he uses to solve the problem of the rule of modernism, carrying certain terminology used in mathematics into literary studies. The author of this article arrives at conclusions concerning the interdisciplinary character of criticism as placed between literature, science, and journalism. This position of critical discourse requires that the critic carry out his or her research in the form of public discourse, aided by the appropriate linguistic devices.

    A large Prologue to the second part of the Face of the Moon by Teodor Parnicki shows a mechanism of a complicated bureaucratic‑counterintelligence in Byzantium in the middle of the fifth century. The task of agents (recruited among unemployed rhetoricians) is to make the most precise reports, however, as Tomasz Burek, a critic, has noticed, they do not follow the course of events. After years, similar remarks were made by Ryszard Koziołek in his work devoted to Parnicki’s trilogy. Referring to these remarks, the author of the article claims that a dynamic relation between an event and word in Parnicki’s novel is similar to a „source difference” typical of a language of deconstruction. Thus, one can speak of analogies between Parnicki’s prose from the 1960s and Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction deriving from the criticism of phenomenology at the same time. Eventually, the history taking place seems to be an event muddle in Parnicki’s works, around which something happens, though, we cannot definitely say what happens in fact. Reality, „ungraspable and unembraceable” becomes marked with stereotypical female features, taking on the status of an unapproachable object of desire. At the same time, it is being constantly disciplined by écriture masculine, an institutionalised discourse of a patriarchal culture while a monstrous SCHOLA AGENTORUM from the Prologue to Parnicki’s novel may successfully be considered a hyperbole of such a discourse. Maksymian, the main protagonist, chooses another discourse which is confronted with a Nietzschean principle of vita femina.
    Dans un large Prolog de la IIe partie de Twarz księżyca Teodor Parnicki montre le fonctionnement de la machine bureaucratique et contre-espionnage à Byzance dans la moitié du Ve siècle. Le travail des agents (recrutés parmi des rhéteurs au chômage) consiste à dresser des rapports les plus précises possible, cependant comme l’a remarqué Tomasz Burek, ils ne rattrapent pas des événements. Après des années Ryszard Koziołek présente une opinion semblable dans son étude sur la trilogie de Parnicki. En se référant à ces réflexions l’auteur de l’article constate que la relation dynamique entre l’événement et la parole dans le roman de Parnicki ressemble à la « différance » caractéristique pour la langue de déconstruction. Nous pouvons alors remarquer des analogies entre la prose de Parnicki des années 60. du XXe siècle et la déconstruction de Jacques Derrida, née dans la même époque de la critique de la phénoménologie. Finalement l’histoire qui se passe semble être dans les romans de Parnicki une nébuleuse factuelle, dans laquelle, bien que quelque chose se passe nous ne pouvons pas définir sûrement ce qui se passe. La réalité « insaisissable et fugitive » est désignée par des traits stéréotypés féminins, en revêtant le statut d’un objet de désir inaccessible. Elle est également disciplinée sans cesse par l’écriture masculine, le discours institutionnalisé de la culture patriarcale, et la SCHOLA AGENTORUM monstrueuse peut être considérée avec succès comme une hyperbole d’un tel discours. Le héros principal, Maksymian, choisit alors un autre discours, qui est comparé dans l’article avec la formule nietzschéenne vita femina.

    The article draws attention to the aesthetic feature of Gombrowicz’s prose as an effect of the unconstrained verbal games (para-logic, homonymies, delexicalisation of phraseologies, etc.) which play a fundamental role in the narratives of the author of Kosmos. Such a narrative strategy can be described with the help of the notion of sprezzatura introduced by Baldasarre Castiglione in The Book of the Courtier (Il Cortegiano, 1528 – in his adaptation of Castiglione’s work the Polish writer of the Renaissance, Łukasz Górnicki, used a neologism “nizaczmienie”). Using the reference to the Renaissance aesthetics of grace (grazia), the author of the article emphasizes the “aristocratic” feature of Gombrowicz’s prose. In this respect, Gombrowicz’s writings differ favorably from the publications of contemporary Polish prose writers (D. Masłowska, M. Sieniewicz, and M. Witkowski). Although the mentioned artists refer to both the poetics and anthropological concepts of Gombrowicz, their works do not achieve a similar degree of narrative freedom. This aesthetic difference is accompanied by a cultural and social difference – the brilliance of Gombrowicz’s narrative was elitist and characteristic of “high modernism”, while modern writers are associated with a more plebeian cultural formation.

    Artykuł ma formę tryptyku prezentującego poglądy na temat poezji Jacques’a Derridy, Krzysztofa Uniłowskiego i Franco Berardiego. Eksponuje różnice w stanowisku filozofa, krytyka literackiego i politologa, a zarazem odmienną wrażliwość  Francuza, Polaka i Włocha. Wyjściowe pytanie „Co to jest poezja?” zostało sformułowane po włosku, co ma istotne konsekwencje, bo w odczuciu wielu narodów europejskich język włoski brzmi śpiewnie, dziecinnie i zarazem poetycko. Efektem tego stereotypu jest „italianizacja” poezji kojarzonej z zabawą, przyjemnością, zmysłowością, słodyczą, itp. Derrida – jak sugeruje autor – dialoguje z tym mitem porównując poemat do jeża z bajki dla dzieci. Przeciwnie rozumuje  myśliciel z Bolonii, odrzucając „infantylne” skojarzenia przypisuje poezji moc uzdrawiającą, rewolucyjną, mesjańską. Natomiast Uniłowski, dotąd niechętnie komentujący wiersze, odkrywa oryginalność i aktualność stanowiska  Berardiego, co prowokuje serię skojarzeń dotyczących zarówno współczesnej polityki, jak humanistyki (także badań  prowadzonych w Uniwersytecie Śląskim).
    The article takes the form of a triptych presenting the views on the poetry of Jacques Derrida, Krzysztof Uniłowski and Franco Berardi. It exposes the differences in the position of a philosopher, literary critic and political scientist, and at the same time the different sensitivity of a French, Pole and Italian. The initial question “What is poetry”, formulated in Italian, has important consequences, because in the opinion of many European nations, Italian sounds at once songful, childish and poetic. The effect of this stereotype is the “Italianization” of poetry associated with fun, pleasure, sensuality, sweetness, etc. Derrida – as the author suggests – dialogues with this myth comparing the poem to the hedgehog from a fairy tale for children. The philosopher from Bologna, on the contrary, rejects “infantile” associations, and attributes to poetry a healing, revolutionary, messianic power. Finally, Uniłowski, who has been reluctant to comment on poems, discovers the originality and topicality of Berardi’s position, which provokes a series of associations concerning both contemporary and ancient humanities.
