Opis:
Mushrooms can be used in diet as nutraceutical or functional foods for promoting and maintaining health quality and health longevity. Mushrooms just like medicinal plants can be utilized in the form of powder or extract as curative agents of several diseases and in providing a healthy diet. In current study, ten different mushroom species were collected from Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The selected mushrooms were assessed for their nutritional value, biological activities and fatty acid profiling. Before extraction, proximate analysis of all selected mushrooms was performed. Protein, fat, ash and total carbohydrate contents ranged from 10-30%, 0.43-8.08%, 1.1-9.14%, 12.47-92.52%, respectively. Then mushrooms were extracted with three different solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol for the assessment of their antioxidant potentials through different antioxidant assays like total phenolics, total flavonoid contents and DPPH inhibition assay. The order of antioxidant potential in different solvent is methanol>Ethyl acetate>n-hexane. Quantification of fatty acids by GC/MS analysis revealed that stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid were present in significant quantity in different mushrooms and unsaturated fatty acids were found abundant over saturated fatty acids in all the selected mushrooms. So presence of fatty acids in studied samples is one of the main biologically active ingredients from mushrooms. The study concluded that the selected mushrooms from different regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir are of nutritional importance having significant antioxidant potential and contains several unsaturated fatty acids which contribute to the nutritional value of mushrooms.

The presented study is intended to suggest the best model to predict students’ academic performance at university level. For this purpose, primary data was collected from 400 undergraduate and graduate students of eight departments of Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), which were selected through stratified random sampling. CGPA is used as an indicator of students’ academic performance. Stepwise linear regression is used to select the best model to predict students’ academic performance at tertiary level. The final model selected through stepwise regression includes six variables: the student’s IQ, ownership of AC, gender, geographic location, self-study hours and ownership of fridge as significant predictors of students’ academic performance at tertiary level. IQ, ownership of assets and self-study hours are found to have a positive effect on CGPA while being male and the distance of the household to nearest market are found to have a negative effect on CGPA.

Opis:
Naegleria belongs to the free-living amoeba family and is well-known as a human pathogen. It is recognized as etiological agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis involving central nervous system which always leads to death. To date, there is not a single report demonstrating Naegleria isolation and identification from environmental sources of Rawlakot, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Pakistan, and thus the aim of this study. Naegleria was isolated on non-nutrient agar plates seeded with heat killed E. coli and confirmed by morphological properties of the both stages of cyst or trophozoites. Furthermore, PCR was conducted along with direct sequencing of the PCR product for molecular identification. PCR and sequencing data verified the amplification of Naegleria sp. (07) and Vahlkampfia sp. (01) from both water and soil samples. Interestingly two species were successfully isolated and cultured on both 30 and 45°C. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report demonstrating the Naegleria isolation and molecular characterization from environmental sources of Rawlakot, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. The author is anxious for further evaluation of the pathogenic potential of the identified species and explores drinking water across Pakistan to investigate its quality and frequency of FLA, which might be a possible human hazard in future.

Opis:
Hydro energy is not the main source of energy for the rapidly developing Pakistani economy, but it is an important element of her energy mix. From the Islamabad's economic interests point of view of, the priority is to limit the scale of blackouts, which slow down the development of economics and make life of Pakistan’s population tougher. Hydro power plants, however, are considered more expensive when it comes to the cost of construction than conventional ones. They have a significant advantage: they do not require fuel, and therefore for a country relatively lacking natural resources it is an interesting alternative. The Indus river basin area is suitable to the construction of this type of infrastructure. However , demographic factors are a serious limitation for the development of this type of infrastructure – the growing population means an increase in the demand for potable water (both for people as well as for the food sector). In addition, environmental risks associated with global warming may also have a negative impact on water supply. International environment is disadvantageous to the development of hydro plants. The Indus Water Treaty, signed with India in 1960, does not match the new challenges posed by both the growing population and the development of hydropower. Therefore, competition in the management of shrinking water resources may lead to an escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan, lasting over 70 years. An important role for the dynamics of international relations in South Asia, also in the energy and water dimension, has and will have a policy of the People's Republic of China, which is focused on close cooperation with Pakistan, which is considered by India as a thread.

Opis:
Wild raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) is abundantly grown and widely distributed in temperate regions of lower Himalayan range which represents rich biological diversity for raspberry. Thirty accessions were explored from three different locations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistan), several traits were visualized at sampling locations and some characteristics were evaluated and quantified after harvest of leaf and fruit samples. The accessions differed greatly in growth habit, blooming time, intensity of flowering, fruit setting, ripening time, productivity, fruit shape and color. Concerning quantitative characteristics, significant differences were found in plant height, leaf length and width, number of braches per plant, duration of flowering, fruit setting percentage, days to maturity, fruit length, width and weight among the samples collected from different locations. Ripe fruits were evaluated for their chemical composition i.e. moisture, carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, ash, TSS, acidity, pH and mineral (K, Ca, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, and Cr) contents. The location also had significant effect on chemical composition of ripe fruits.
Malina właściwa (Rubus idaeus L.) jest często hodowana i szeroko rozprowadzana w umiarkowanych rejonach niższego pasma Himalajów, które reprezentuje bogatą różnorodność biologiczną malin. Zbadano trzydzieści próbek z trzech różnych miejsc Azad Jammu i Kaszmiru (Pakistan), dokonano wizualizacji kilkunastu cech w miejscach pobierania próbek oraz oceniono i ilościowo określono kilka cech po zebraniu próbek liści i owoców. Próbki znacznie różniły się wzrostem, czasem kwitnienia, intensywnością zakwitania, zawiązywaniem owoców, czasem dojrzewania, plonowaniem oraz kształtem i kolorem owoców. Jeśli chodzi o cechy ilościowe, to stwierdzono istotne różnice w wysokości roślin, długości i szerokości liści, liczbie gałązek na roślinie, długości kwitnienia, procencie zawiązywanych owoców, liczbie dni do dojrzałości, długości owoców, szerokości i wadze pomiędzy próbkami zebranymi z różnych stanowisk.
