The article – in its first part titled The space of theory – brings a discussion and interpretation of the theoretical views concerning ekphrasis formulated by W.J.T. Mitchell in the essay Ekphrasis and the Other. The second part of the article – The space of practice and the space of picture – aims to make an attempt at a practical application of Mitchell's theoretical postulates. To the reading in the spirit of his theoretical considerations is submitted the description of Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s picture A Girl with a Dead Canary, which we find in Denis Diderot's Salon 1765.

Ekspansja obrazów filmowych w teatrze prowokuje do zadawania pytań o sens ich obecności, o różne relacje między żywym a zarejestrowanym planem inscenizacji. Artykuł jest okazją do poszukiwania adekwatnych teorii, które pozwolą analizować złożone techniki scenicznego obrazowania, idącego od powtórzenia, iluzji, gry z percepcją do utrwalenia i rozproszenia scenicznej cielesności. Interpretacja wybranych przykładów zmierza do odpowiedzi na pytanie, czego chcą (wedle formuły W. J. T. Mitchella) obrazy filmowe na scenie. Odwołując się do trzech autorskich teatrów Krystiana Lupy, Krzysztofa Warlikowskiego i Krzysztofa Garbaczewskiego, autorka próbuje w trybie analizy prześledzić wybrane strategie reżyserów, którzy posługując się nagraniem i kamerą, filmem cytowanym i własną dramaturgią, odmienili i skomplikowali formy żywej obecności na scenie. Nowoczesne praktyki wizualności zmuszają także do poszukiwania nowych narzędzi opisu fenomenów teatralnych o niejednorodnej strukturze przekazu. W przypadku konkretnej praktyki wydaje się ciekawe nie tylko mechaniczne przeniesienie filmu w obszar sceny, lecz także wykorzystanie materii filmowo-kinowej jako inspiracji i zasobu konwencji, które de(kon)struują tradycyjne środki teatralne.
The growing presence of film images on stage makes one question the sense and meaning of their being there, the relations between what is live and recorded. In the article adequate theories are sought that would help to analyse complex scenic imaging techniques, ranging from repetition, illusion, playing with perception, to dispersion and consolidation of corporeality on stage. Analysis of selected examples aims to answer the question (according to W. J. T. Mitchell’s formulae) what is the purpose of film images on the stage. The author refers to the theatres of Krystian Lupa, Krzysztof Warlikowski and Krzysztof Garbaczewski, and analyses the directors’ strategies of their use of recorded film, camera, film citations and their own dramaturgy, and how they changed and made more complex the form of life presence on the stage. The modern visual practices force one to search for new tools to be used in the description of the theatre phenomena which do not have a unitary structure. What appears interesting is not simply the direct placing of film on the stage, but the use of film material as an inspiration and a source of conventions that de(con)struct traditional theatrical agents.

The subject of this work is the images, or more accurately said, the state of our knowledge about the set consisting of artifacts such as the Venus de Milo, the Gioconda, the duck decoys (or “fake birds”) used to hunt ducks, toys such as a doll or a paper airplane and drawings such as the planes drawn up by engineers or architects. Our purpose is to discuss the understanding of images currently considered canonical – i.e., the theory that states that images are a modality of signs. We will do this by analyzing “The Family of images” a proposal developed by W.J.T. Mitchell in a famous essay entitled “What is an image?”. After introducing readers to the subject and outlining a diagnosis about the current status quæstionis of theory of images, we will study Mitchell’s proposal and criticize the thesis (assumed and brilliantly presented by this author) that states that images are nothing more than a more or less sui generis modality of signs. Finally, in the section dedicated to the conclusions, we will outline a proposal of an alternative approach to the study of the images that, instead of seeing them as signs, considers them as toolartifacts.
Tematem artykułu są obrazy, a ściślej mówiąc, stan naszej wiedzy o zbiorze artefaktów, takich jak Wenus z Milo, Gioconda, bałwanki kaczek (alternatywnie „Fake birds” lub „Bird decoys”) używane w myślistwie, zabawki, takie jak lalka lub papierowy samolot oraz rysunki zrobione przez inżyniera czy architekta. Naszym celem jest omówienie rozumienia obrazów, uważanych obecnie za kanoniczne, czyli de facto przedstawienie teorii stanowiącej, że obrazy są modalnością znaków. W tym celu zamierzamy przeanalizować koncepcję „Rodziny obrazów” opracowaną przez W.J.T. Mitchella w jego słynnym eseju zatytułowanym „Czym jest obraz?”. Po zapoznaniu czytelników z tym tematem i przedstawieniu próby diagnozy przyczyn dyskomfortu wywoływanego przez status quaestionis na podstawie teorii obrazów chcemy przyjrzeć się propozycji rozumienia tej kwestii przez Mitchella i krytycznie zanalizować przyjętą przez niego tezę, która głosi, że obrazy nie są niczym więcej niż modalnością znaków sui generis. Na koniec w części poświęconej wnioskom zaprezentujemy swoją propozycję alternatywnego podejścia do badania obrazów, które to stanowisko każe traktować je jako artefakt-narzędzie, nie zaś postrzegać jako znaki.

J.T. Milik (1922-2006) was first of all a brilliant epigrapher and publisher of the Dead Sea Scrolls. His stay at the École Biblique marked a crucial period in his busy life. It was the golden decade in his scholarly output. He identified, deciphered and published most of the Dead Sea documents which appeared in print in the 1950s (suffice it to mention the manuscripts of 1Q and 5Q, the Copper Scroll from Cave 3, documents from Wadi Murabba‘at and some scrolls of Cave 4). He wrote a synthesis in 1957 which remains one of the most cited books on the scrolls. Starting from March 1952 Milik took part in archaeological searches at Khirbet Qumran and in the Judaean Desert. He cooperated with Father Bellarmino Bagatti at Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem. Milik discovered several Second Temple tombs with numerous ossuaries close to Jerusalem. His two expeditions with Father Jean Starcky yielded hundreds of Nabataean inscriptions. He remains in the history of Biblical research as a co-founder of Qumranology and a Biblical archaeologist par excellence.

Opis:
The critical values for pairing of s*- and d-wave symmetry are calculated within the t-U-J-V and the t-J-V models in renormalized mean field theory. It is shown that the first model yields the proper critical values in the low density limit while the other does not. Renormalized mean field theory strongly decreases the absolute value of (negative) critical values for larger electron densities.

On the example of monolayer manganites we show that the theoretical ideas developed long ago along the derivation of the spin t-J model from the Hubbard model are nowadays very helpful in strongly correlated oxides with partly filled degenerate orbitals. We analyze a realistic orbital t-J model for e$\text{}_{g}$ electrons in La$\text{}_{1-x}$Sr$\text{}_{1+x}$MnO$\text{}_{4}$ monolayer manganites, and discuss the evolution of spin and orbital correlations under increasing doping by performing exact diagonalization of finite clusters, with electronic kinetic energy determined self-consistently at a finite temperature by classical Monte Carlo for t$\text{}_{2g}$ spins. Several experimental results are reproduced.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie problemu prawdy i wiarygodności w kontekście komunikacji obrazami fotograficznymi w przestrzeni publicznej. Użytkowanie nowych mediów sprawia, że wszystkie aspekty komunikacji internetowej powinny być traktowane jako przekaz publiczny. W przekonaniu autora artykułu, zagadnienie prawdy w rozumieniu epistemologicznym (gdy chodzi o reguły postrzegania), oraz prawdy i wiarygodności w rozumieniu etycznym (mając na myśli postawę i ocenę fotografii), stanowi ważny element refleksji nad współczesną komunikacją wizualną. Artykuł napisany jest z perspektywy filozoficznej, autor artykułu preferuje metodę hermeneutyczną. W części analitycznej autor odwołuje się przede wszystkim do filozofa Hansa-Georga Gadamera oraz teoretyka kultury wizualnej Williama J. T. Mitchella.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the problem of truth and credibility in the context of communication with photographic images in the public space. The ubiquity of the new media allows for the claim that all aspects of internet communication should be treated as a public message. According to the author of the article, the issue of truth in the epistemological sense (when it comes to the rules of perception), and truth and credibility in the ethical sense (when it comes to the attitude and assessment of photography), constitute an important element of reflection on contemporary visual communication. The article is written from a philosophical perspective, the author prefers the hermeneutic method. In the analytical part, the author refers primarily to philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer and the visual culture theorist William J. T. Michell.

A new lattice model is presented for correlated electrons on the unrestricted 4$\text{}^{L}$-dimensional electronic Hilbert space ⨁$\text{}_{n=1}^{L}$C$\text{}^{4}$ (where L is the lattice length). It is an extension of the supersymmetric t-J model. The new model has gl(2|1) supersymmetry and contains one symmetry-preserving free real parameter α which has its origin in the one-parameter family of inequivalent typical 4-dimensional irreps of gl(2|1). When α = 0, the model reduces to the supersymmetric t-J model.

180 lat temu, 12 września 1827 roku, w Ozimku nieopodal Opola na Śląsku miała miejsce doniosła uroczystość. Oddano do użytku wspaniałe dzieło kunsztu inżynierskiego i hutniczego, jakim jest wiszący most o konstrukcji łańcuchowej na rzece Mała Panew. Rozwiązanie techniczne zastosowane przy budowie tej przeprawy było zupełnie nowatorskie i wyprzedzało wcześniejsze dokonania. Jak miało się okazać, most w Ozimku był jedną z pierwszych tego typu konstrukcji na świecie. Obecnie jest na pewno najstarszą taką budowlą na stałym lądzie kontynentu europejskiego. Posłużył jako wzór przy budowie wielu podobnych przepraw mostowych na całym świecie.
180 years ago, September 12, 1827 in Ozimek near Opole in Silesia was a momentous occasion. Put into operation a wonderful work of craftsmanship engineering and metallurgy, which is a suspension bridge construction chain in the river Small Panew. The technical solution used in the construction of the crossing was quite innovative and ahead of previous performance. How would find the bridge in Ozimek was one of the first such structure in the world. Today is certainly the oldest such building in the mainland European continent. Served as a model for the construction of many similar bridges around the world.
