The article Silmarillion—J. R. R. Tolkien’s Allotopia From Ardological Perspective aims at outlining the methodology for studying Tolkien’s world-building project without the need of acknowledging the text-centered reading paradigm. Having differentiated tolkienology, as text-focused, philological studies, from ardology, understood as world-building studies, Maj deconstructs the use of Tolkienian’s “subcreation” in literary theory as far too indebted in the metaphysics of presence to establish a neutral framework for studying the process of constructing a fictional reality. With the examples from Silmarillion—perhaps the best instance of modern mythography, in no way resembling the narrative arc of a prototypical fantasy novel—the author builds up on the notion of “allotopia” as the world independent insofar to create its own ontologies, topographies, languages, philosophy, history, literature, art, or even physical artifacts—without the need of anchoring the overall creation in a metaphysical paradigm. Correspondingly, the text offers an insight to a number of theories in postclassical narratology or postmodern philosophy that may help in understanding the scale of Tolkien’s solemn contribution to the art of fantastic world-building.

Ustalenie rodowodu J.R.R. Tolkiena wciąż pozostaje poważnym wyzwaniem dla badaczy jego życia i twórczości. Autorzy najważniejszych biografi i poprzestają zazwyczaj na opisaniu najbliższych, angielskich przodków pisarza, o kontynentalnych zaś, „saksońskich” korzeniach rodu jedynie wspominają. Ten tekst jest oryginalną próbą rekonstrukcji wcześniejszych dziejów rodziny Tolkienów, wywodzącej się – jak wynika z przedstawionych tu badań – z Gdańska oraz obszarów dawnych Prus Książęcych, Królewskich i Wschodnich (dla zachowania spójności wywodu autor posługuje się w całym tekście najpóźniejszą historycznie, ale łatwiej identyfi kowaną nazwą Prusy Wschodnie). Analiza dokumentów źródłowych, odnalezionych przez autora w archiwach Londynu, Gdańska i Krzyżborka (obecnie Sławskoje w obwodzie kaliningradzkim) pozwoliła na uzasadnione włączenie do drzewa genealogicznego twórcy Władcy Pierścieni postaci, których związków z Tolkienem albo wcześniej przekonująco nie dowiedziono, albo w ogóle nie badano. Są to: John Benjamin Tolkien, Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien, Christian Tolkien, Michael Tolkien i należący do najodleglejszy z potwierdzonych protoplastów, Friedrich Tolkien. Autor artykułu wskazuje także pruskie niegdyś miejscowości, które mogły być najstarszymi siedzibami rodu Tolkienów.
J. R. R. Tolkien’s (1892–1973) ancestry has been an obscure matter. From the official biographies of the famous Oxford professor and author we have known only about Tolkien’s great-grandparents and about the general direction of the Tolkien family’s migration in the eighteenth century described as „Saxony”. Ryszard Derdziński has found out J. R. R. Tolkien’s great-great-grandfather’s roots. Discovering crucial genealogical documents from London, Gdańsk (Poland) and Kreuzburg (East Prussia) ie. church records, a Parliament bill, newspaper news, entries in the books from that age etc. Derdziński has proved that John Benjamin Tolkien (1752–1719), J. R. R. Tolkien’s ancestor who lived and died in London and was a watch- and clockmaker, was born in Gdańsk in June 1752. His brother was Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien from London who also was born in Polish Gdańsk in July 1746. They emmigrated from Gdańsk to London in the years 1766–1772. Their father was Christian Tolkien (1706–1791), a craftsman from Gdańsk, brother of a Gdańsk furrier, Michael Tolkien (1708–1795). Both Christian and Michael were born in a little town Kreuzburg in East Prussia (now Slavskoye in Kaliningrad Oblast). Derdziński has found there at least four generations of this line of the Tolkien family and the fi rst known Tolkien from Kreuzburg was Friedrich Tolkien from 1614. The article shows also the genesis of the Tolkien family name and locates its beginning in the fourteenth century and a small village Tolkynen (today Tołkiny in Poland).

Professor Tolkien’s knowledge of his ancestry and the history of his family name was limited to the family legends. The article From Prussia to England. J. R. R. Tolkien’s Family Saga (14th-19thc.) describes Ryszard Derdziński’s ten-years-long research which confirmed that the Tolkien family came to England from Gdańsk in the eighteenth century and that their roots can be tracked down to mediaeval Prussia and the Harz Mountains. The presented findings of Derdziński are based on archival and genealogical research and field research. The author established that Tolkien’s family name comes from Old Prussian (Baltic) etymology and is most probably related to the history of von Markelingerode, a noble family which came to Prussia from the Harz Mountains. Derdziński describes the details of the life of Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien and John Benjamin Tolkien, two brothers from Gdańsk, from whom all English-speaking Tolkiens in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia descent. Furthermore, the author of the article presents a detailed family tree, as well as reproductions of important documents that determine the particular phases of the history of the ancestors of J. R. R. Tolkien.

The article compares the presentation of material wealth in the Old English epic Beowulf and in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, particularly The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with reference to the recently published prose translation of Beowulf made by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1926 and supplied by him with ample notes and commentary. The analysis makes use of the anthropological and sociological concepts of Georges Dumézil (trifunctional theory), Marcel Mauss (the concept of the gift), and René Girard (mimetic rivalry) to elucidate the significance of treasure in the analyzed texts.

Artykuł dotyka zagadnienia możliwości teologicznej interpretacji dzieł kultury na przykładzie dzieł J.R.R. Tolkiena. Wskazuje występujące racje takiej interpretacji oraz towarzyszące jej trudności. Posługuje się, pochodzącą od św. Pawła, kategorią „typu” − zjawiska, osoby lub wydarzenia zapowiadającego rzeczywistość Nowego Przymierza. Najpierw przybliża jej sens i historię wykorzystania w teologii, następnie uzasadnia jej zastosowanie do fragmentów prozy Tolkiena. Zasadniczą część artykułu stanowi odczytanie Wielkiej Wędrówki Elfów, opisanej w rozdziałach III-V Silmarillionu, jako obrazu Kościoła Pielgrzymującego. Kluczowe dla takiej interpretacji pozostają elementy takie, jak motyw wezwania, wspólnej drogi czy wzajemnego wstawiennictwa, a także wspaniałość celu wędrówki. Artykuł ukazuje z jednej strony owocność metody typologicznej, z drugiej − możliwość teologicznego wykorzystania dzieł literatury współczesnej.
The article addresses the issue of relationship between theology and literature. The purpose is to find a proper method for theological interpretation of literature. Proposed method is St. Paul's category of “figure” – the phenomenon, person or object that announces another from the New Testament. Firstly the paper defines the concept of „figure” and presents its history. Next the article explains the objective and conditions of using the method to interpret some parts from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion. The last part of the text is the example of application of the method to a story of The Journey of Elves from III-V chapters of The Silmarillion. The analysis presents the story as the image of the Church in its way to heaven. The work shows that the literature can be interesting for theology and that theology can interpret the works of literature. The “figure” methodology is one of the accurate ways to understand the literature in theology.

There is no doubt that Norman stories and myths were an important inspiration for John R. R. Tolkien who repeatedly stressed their significance for shaping his works and literary imagination. In the article Tolkien and the Vikings. On J. R. R. Tolkien and Victorian Literature About The North, Leśniewski analyses the influence of Norse mythology, Victorian literature and history on Tolkienian writings. Tolkien’s belief that we can access and reconstruct history through languages had its source in the nineteenth century when scientists were convinced that it is possible to recreate extinct languages and mythologies. Thus they often created new epic poems on the basis of folk tales and ballads. Tolkien often expressed his regret that England has lost its mythological traditions. He seemed to have dreamt of giving England its own mythology. Tolkien drew inspiration from Victorian writers and scientists, but he also went far beyond Victorian tradition. His works are eclectic and syncretic, bringing together many different traditions—and, thus, appealing to a much wider audience.

The Lord of the Rings, like all J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary legacy, for years has been popular among faithful readers and is gaining new ones; moreover it is inspiring researchers to formulate theses and develop scientific analyses. These works offer various perspectives of interpretation, but you can list among them three dominant ones: biographical, mythological and religious one, which is a variant of the second perspective. All the research approaches are tied by two motifs, which both by Tolkien critics and by enthusiasts are regarded as key to understanding his artistic legacy: nonhuman inhabitants of Middle-earth and their languages. Reflection on the mutual relationship of these motifs can lead to the disclosure in Tolkien’s work the germ of anthropological imagination.

Tolkiena W artykule omówione zostały powiązania między jedyną powieścią Harolda Pintera pod tytułem The Dwarfs: A Novel i książką Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem autorstwa J. R. R. Tolkiena, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem postaci karzełków/krasnoludów (określanych w języku angielskim tym samym słowem dwarf) oraz bohaterów obu utworów, Lena i Bilbo, w przestrzeni, odpowiednio, powojennego Londynu i Śródziemia. Dokładne zbadanie tematycznej i strukturalnej roli karzełków/ krasnoludów ujawnia intrygujące echa powieści Tolkiena w książce Pintera. Z tej perspektywy The Dwarfs okazuje się powieścią, w której Pinter w charakterystyczny dla siebie sposób przekształcił wątki mitologiczne i folklorystyczne w stopniu niespotykanym ani w jego wcześniejszych, ani późniejszych pisarskich dokonaniach.
The article focuses on the links between Harold Pinter’s only work of fiction entitled The Dwarfs: A Novel and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, with special emphasis on the figures of dwarfs as well as the characters of Len and Bilbo within the spaces of post-war London and Middle-earth, respectively. Pinter seems to have created a compelling multi-level variation on the themes from Tolkien’s book. A careful examination of the thematic and structural role of the dwarfs reveals intriguing echoes of Tolkien’s novel in Pinter’s book. The Dwarfs thus turn out to be infused with Pinteresquely transformed mythology and folklore to the extent which seems to have neither precedent nor continuation in his other writings.

The article presents a short comparative analysis of two versions of the English ro mance in verse Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – the original text from the 14th century and its modern translation by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Middle English source text uses a North-West English dialect and is an interesting example of a late revival of alliteration originally rooted in the old English tradition. Alliteration as a formal organizing principle is combined with end-rhymes which complete the structure of the poem; this is both sophisticated and rare. Tolkien’s modern rendition of the romance recognizes and respects its dominant structural elements and attempts to recreate all the formal aspects of the text as adequately as possible. The modern version, while being a translation, acquires the semi-authorial signature of Tolk ien, both a translator and scholar who creates a highly competent and historically informed rendition. The translator’s craft is particularly visible when Tolkien’s ver sion is juxtaposed with the Polish translation by Andrzej Wicher. The linguistic and cultural distance between Polish and English is larger than the distance between the original and the modern rendition in English, and, as a result, the translation of Andrzej Wicher manages to reproduce only a limited number of alliterations and hence loses many artistic features that were essential components of the original text.

The Lord of the Rings, the most popular book by J.R.R. Tolkien is most often interpreted as an example of mythological reconstruction born out of philological research. However, of equal importance is reading the novel as a cartographic design based on the maps of the world presented, handmade and repeatedly enhanced by the author himself, included in the subsequent editions of the novel. The attempt to look at the novel through the prism of maps and determine their functions as integral parts of the novel, and at the same time autonomous texts, allows the reflection on the work and its reception in the context of the consequences of literacy and the type of modelling human experience implied by this ability.

Artykuł poświęcony jest funkcjonowaniu legend arturiańskich w twórczości  J.R.R. Tolkiena i A. Sapkowskiego. Uniwersum "Wiedźmina", wpisane w  mit arturiański, sprawia wrażenie zakorzenionego w długiej, wielowiekowej tradycji. Tolkien czerpał z legendy o królu Arturze i rycerzach Okrągłego Stołu, wykorzystując przede wszystkim wpisane w kulturę europejską odwieczne pragnienie nadejścia króla - odnowiciela. Najciekawszą kwestią jest odmienne podejście do legendy prezentowane przez obu pisarzy. Tolkien celowo pominął elementy "skażone" wpływami chrześcijańskimi, wydobywając czystą esencję pogańskiej celtyckości, rezygnując jednocześnie z inspiracji średniowieczną historią. Sapkowski, przeciwnie, otwarcie przyznaje się do fascynacji średniowieczną wersją mitu, apoteozując go w obu jego postaciach - pierwotnej i przefiltrowanej przez tradycję chrześcijańską.  
The article is devoted to the functioning of the Arthurian legends in the works by both J.R.R. Tolkien and A. Sapkowski. The universe of Andrzej Sapkowski, who inscribed his own story into the Arthurian myth, makes an impression of being rooted in a long, centuries-old tradition. Tolkien also drew from the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, using the eternal desire for the coming of the king – restorer. The most interesting issue is the different approach to the legend presented by both writers. Tolkien omitted elements "contaminated" with Christian influence, extracting the pure essence of pagan Celticism, while renouncing an inspiration from the medieval history. Sapkowski, on the contrary, openly admits to his fascination, apotheising the Arthurian myth in both its forms – the primitive one and the one filtered through the Christian tradition.

There appear to be quite a few parallels between Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy (Consolatio Philosophiae), and they seem to concern particularly, though not only, the character drawing in Tolkien’s book. Those parallels are preeminently connected with the fact that both Boethius and Tolkien like to think of the most extreme situations that can befall a human. And both are attached to the idea of not giving in to despair, and of finding a source of hope in seemingly desperate straits. The idea that there is some link between Boethius and Tolkien is naturally not new. T.A. Shippey talks about it in his The Road to Middle Earth, but he concentrates on the Boethian conception of good and evil, which is also of course an important matter, but surely not the only one that links Tolkien and Boethius. On the other hand, it is not my intention to claim that there is something in Tolkien’s book of which it can be said that it would have been absolutely impossible without Boethius. Still, I think it may be supposed that just like Boethian motifs are natural in the medieval literature of the West, so they can be thought of as natural in the work of such dedicated a medievalist as J.R.R. Tolkien.

The article discusses the work of J. R. R. Tolkien in the context of the concept of hope as it is defined in the Thomist philosophical system. The thrust of the argument is that the distinction between the two meanings of the word: hope defined as an appetitive passion of the soul and hope understood as one of the theological virtues provides a viable conceptual key to a discussion of the way in which the idea of hope functions in J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic works of fantasy fiction. The analysis seeks to trace the evolution of this basic dichotomy throughout The Lord of the Rings and the most pertinent sections of the legendarium presenting how the notion of hope functions for the civilization of the Elves and of Men, and also how the interaction between the passion and the virtue of hope impacts upon the construction and function of some of the key the individual characters of Tolkien’s fiction.
Artykuł zawiera omówienie twórczości J. R. R. Tolkiena w kontekście pojęcia nadziei w ujęciu zdefiniowanym przez św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Celem argumentu jest prześledzenie jak dwa rodzaje nadziei wyróżnione w głównym dziele św. Tomasza – Summa Theologica: nadzieja pojmowana jako uczucie oraz nadzieja postrzegana jako cnota teologiczna odzwierciedlone jest w twórczości J. R. R. Tolkiena, pozostającej pod determinującym wpływem myśli i teologii katolickiej. Analiza obejmuje główne dzieła Tolkiena, które składają się na wizję świata wtórnego rozwiniętą w eposie Władca Pierścieni oraz w towarzyszącym mu legendarium.
