Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the way in which Ann Radcliffe manages to register shifts in the ontology of the self and the other which were taking place in the late eighteenth century. Acknowledging the ambivalences of the semiotics of the body, especially in The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian, allows her to toy with the notion of the body as character correlate, and orchestrate the problematics of the union between a character and his or her corporeal designation and perception by others. The paper demonstrates how grappling with the dynamics informed by the Cartesian opposition of substance and essence in turn allows for subscribing to the paradigmatic gothic atmosphere, but also foreshadows the contemporary post-Cartesian phenomenological understanding of the body, and introduces a truly modern psychologised and internalised eschatology and “spectralisation of the other.”

Opis:
This contribution focuses on analysing political communication in Italy during the 2022 national elections, with particular attention to the TikTok platform, where prominent Italian political leaders have appeared. To this end, we used a combination of social analysis tools, including Fanpage Karma and Blogmeter Live Insight. The collected data were scrutinized using a multidisciplinary approach that combines Political Communication Theory and Media Analysis. The aim is to explore the role of pop culture in political communication and understand how this phenomenon influences political participation and users’ choices. Furthermore, the possible consequences of the growing popularity of pop political communication on political representation are examined, as well as whether this is a momentary or long-lasting phenomenon.

The aim of the paper is try to make a dynamic picture of the modern (or post-modern) Italian identity, from a political, social and cultural point of view. The status of this country is in the balance, between a fast industrialization without an analogous industrial culture and a lumbering memory where the traditional rules are still strong. The analysis will be carried out through an historical and sociological excursus both in Italian ascent memories and in political processes and events after the Second World War.

GENERATIONAL CONFLICT AS A MIRROR OF IDEOLOGICAL DISPUTE. A RETROSPECTIVE LOOK AT THE ANNI DI PIOMBO IN SELECTED ITALIAN FEATURE FILMS OF THE LATE 1970S AND 1980S The concept of anni di piombo – literally meaning ‘years of lead’ – in Italian culture used to determine the 1970s, and hence decade, whose political face was dominated by numerous acts of terror (both radical left and neofascist). Miller-Klejsa analyzes the Italian films dealing with this phenomenon, completed in the late 1970s and 1980s. She concentrates on three embodiments in which the father-son relationship (Dear Dad by Dino Risi, The tragedy of the funny small man by Bernardo Bertolucci, Strike at the heart by Gianni Amelio). An interesting feature in the movies is the use of the motives from then popular psychoanalysis: among others, Freud’s thesis about the desire to ‘kill fathers’, which frequently was shown in historical context (e.g. the assassination of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro).

Until 1870 the French-Italian relations were not free from severe strains. It is acknowledged that both French and Italian diplomacies were steered by Berlin, however, this seems to be a simplification. The point of this article is to present a certain autonomy of French-Italian diplomacy even before the fall of Bismarck in 1890 and to draw attention to the stereotypes of these two Latin countries which were present in the press of those times. Translated by Julitta Rydlewska

The paper discusses the attitude of the Fascist regime in Italy towards the dialects, which in that period were still used in everyday communication by most Italians. It analyses the language politics in the field of education and mass media. A lot of attention has been paid to the teaching program “from dialect to language”, which was experimented with at schools in the twenties and subsequently abandoned as a result of a growing anti-dialect campaign. It also discusses the restrictions in the use of dialects in the press, radio and cinema. The emerging picture of the language policy of that period shows a transition from relative tolerance towards the use of dialects in public area in the twenties to a rising hostility and the fight against them conducted for the sake of ideological and political unification of Italy.

Parliamentary elections in Italy, which took place on 24 – 25 February 2013 in a very specific political circumstances caused by economical crisis and the internal situation of the Italian State. The fall of the Silvio Berlusconi’s government and replacement it with a technical government did not improve the internal situation of the country, and indeed it has deepened. The withdrawal of support by the Popolo della Libertàto the government of Prime Minister Mario Monti has caused the need for early parliamentary elections. On the political scene appeared new political parties, including Movimento Cinque Stelle (Five Stars Movement), which stood out from the traditionally corrupt politics and proposed a new form of campaign, using such means as the Internet, blogs, and tour around the country. The new group has also set up outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti called Scelta Civica (Civic Choice) aided by the smaller parties which were in the Parliament and supported of the European Union austerity policies. In addition, in the election participated the Democratic Party, the Northern League and the Popolo della Libertà (People of Freedom). In total, their participation in the elections reported 215 political parties. Elections minimally won leftist Democratic Party with a score of 29.54% (Chamber of Deputies). Surprisingly Popolo dellaLibertà of Silvio Berlusconi received 29.13% (Chamber of Deputies). But the biggest winner was the Five Star Movement, which won 25.55% of the seats, while the biggest loser was the group of Mario Monti, because he received only 10.54% of votes. The result above shows that the creation of the coalition will be very difficult. Political class will have to regain the trust of the society to be able to make the necessary reforms to cure the economical situation of Italy and they should focus on the problems of the country and not the Silvio Berlusconi’s excesses.

Opis:
In mid-March, 2017, Italian public television channel RAI Uno aired the last episode of a popular show called Parliamone… Sabato. The episode discussed the romantic preferences of Italian men, and – particularly – why Italian men allegedly fantasize about Eastern European women as their ideal partners. Following the episode, a portion of the public rose in outrage for thesexist and racist content of the show. The protest obtained the cancellation of the show and a public apology by the RAI network soon thereafter. One of the key sites for the protest was the official Twitter hashtag of the show (#ParliamoneSabato). This paper offers a discourse-centered online ethnography of a corpus of tweets gathered from #ParliamoneSabato during the two weeks following the announcement that the show would be put off the air. Text circulated via Twitter was analyzed in light of its broader context thanks to online observation and limited ethnographic engagement in the analog realm. The protest tweeted at #ParliamoneSabato was analyzed through the lenses of Bennett and Sageberg’s ‘logic of connective action’ and Kelsey and Bennett’s ‘synoptic resistance’, as well as through the work of others involved in the study of the relationship between social media and social movements. This paper concludes that, despite its spontaneous character and its focus on singling out the misconducts of ‘the few’ running the Parliamone… Sabato, the overall features of the public involved in the protest (especiallythe narrowness of the user based) make it hard to characterize it as a self-organized protest of ‘the many’. In particular, it is crucial to notice that the protest might have originated somewhat spontaneously and mostly online, but almost immediately traveled into the analog world thanks to the brokerage of the Italian feminist movement “Non una di meno”. A closer look at the language used in the context of the protest highlights that much of the conversation betrays some level of anxiety on behalf of the Italian public because of a (real or imagined) growth in diversity within the country and its intertwining with gender issues and gender-related politics.

Idea ta pozostawała jednak w sferze teoretycznych rozważań aż do zakończenia II wojny światowej i powstania Republiki Włoskiej. Artykuł przedstawia rozwijane we Włoszech koncepcje dotyczące regionu i regionalizmu w kontekście rozwoju struktury wewnętrznej państwa. Tłem rozważań są teoretyczne zasady geografii regionalnej
The regional structure of Italy has remained unchanged for over two millennia since the time of Octavian August, who divided the country into 11 regions. This happened despite the fact that after the fall of the Roman Empire, the territory was incorporated into many separate political units whose borders changed many times. This situation was not conducive to the development of the national Italian identity and most of the residents of the country identified themselves with their own regions. Their existence in the collective consciousness meant that the concepts of the united Italian state that appeared in the nineteenth century assumed the autonomy of the regions. This idea, however, remained in the sphere of theoretical considerations until the end of World War II and the establishment of the Italian Republic. Its Constitution assumed that the Republic would be a state pursuing the idea of regionalism, which was to constitute a compromise between supporters of the unitary status quo and federalists. The article presents the concepts developed in Italy regarding the region and regionalism in the context of the development of the internal structure of the state. The background for the considerations are the theoretical principles of regional geography.

This article focuses on the activities of the Italian social movement known as “Sardines”. The founders of the movement protest against the populists which have been increasingly present in Italian politics since the beginning of the 21st century. “Sardines” manifest their indignation principally through the demonstrations in the streets of Italian cities. They gather to suport free-from-verbal-violence public discourse and politics. “Sardines” activities are based on the idea of networking. On the one hand, it is an informal organization, acting without clear parti- tion and pronounced program, and on the other hand, based on Internet communication, which help to expand its influence. In this article, “Sardines” are compared with other similar and comparable social movements in Italy. This kind of activity shows that Italian politics requires changes in terms of social communication and methods of operation. Therefore, looking at the genesis of the “Sardines”, following thesis can be proposed: a movement that is all about social objection to the arbitrary politics may have a real impact on reformulating public discourse.

The aim of this qualitative study was to consider the question of whether the Italian political management of the pandemic respected the European bio-ethical and bio-juridical approaches in light of the principles of autonomy, dignity, integrity and vulnerability. As no specific consolidated literature exists on the subject, the Italian situation was taken into consideration, specifically the work of a spontaneous commission (DuPre) that collected the reflections of academics and researchers interested in discussing political decisions for the management of the emergency, which was the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The analysis took into account the contributions of scholars during two conferences (without proceedings), which were transcribed and examined. From the texts processed with a thematic analysis, three main themes emerged: ‘pandemic as a state of exception, sovereignty and crisis of democracy’, ‘the value of doubt and refutation’ and ‘elimination of informed consent between persuasion and blackmail’. In this paper, the final bio-political considerations on the European approach and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy are presented.

Opis:
Embedded in scholarship on militant democracy, this research aims to explain how Italian legislation was positioned to militant democratic measures and how this changed over time. Drawing on the qualitative source analysis and the explanatory frameworks of democratic vulnerability tests two competing theory-grounded assumptions. While the first one assumes that Italian democracy became vulnerable when traditional militant democracy instruments were outmoded, the second considers the misuse or abandonment of those means with social consent as the source of vulnerability. The crisis-induced socioeconomic inequality and uncertainty weakened the Italian political nation. As a result, the latter supported populists in return for a promise of political change. The anti-democratic legal means employed to extend power competencies and prevent the exchange of ruling parties were the way to and the costs of the expected political change. At the same time, the political nation became unable to self-organize to strengthen democracy self-defense. As a result, Italians co-produced a quasi-militant democracy that turned vulnerable because militant democracy measures were misused or not used with the consent of Italians that relinquished their political subjectivity in favor of the Northern League and the Five Star Movement.
