Opis:
DNA is the universal primary target for ionizing radiation; however, the cellular response is highly diversified not only by differential DNA repair ability. The monitoring system for the ionizing radiation-inflicted DNA damage consists of 3 apparently independently acting enzymes which are activated by DNA breaks: two protein kinases, Atm (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) and DNA-PK (DNA-dependent protein kinase) and a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, PARP-1. These 3 enzymes are the source of alarm signals, which affect to various extents DNA repair, progression through the cell cycle and eventually the pathway to cell death. Their functions probably are partly over-lapping. On the side of DNA repair their role consists in recruiting and/or activating the repair enzymes, as well as preventing illegitimate recombination of the damaged sites. A large part of the nuclear signalling pathway, including the integrating role of Tp53 has been revealed. Two main signalling pathways start at the plasma membrane: the MAPK/ERK (mitogen and extracellular signal regulated protein kinase family) "survival pathway" and the SAPK/JNK (stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase) "cell death pathway". The balance between them is likely to determine the cell’s fate. When DNA break rejoining is impaired, the cell is unconditionally radiation sensitive. The fate of a repair-competent cell is determined by the time factor: the cell cycle arrest should be long enough to ensure the completion of repair. Incomplete repair or misrepair may be tolerated, when generation of the death signal is prevented. So, the character and timing of the signals are, to a large part, responsible for the cellular intrinsic radiation sensitivity and depend on the characteristics of the cellular signalling web.

Objectives Mammographic density (MD) refers to the percentage of dense tissue of an entire breast and was proposed to be used as a surrogate marker for breast cancer. High-dose ionizing radiation (IR) has been recognized as a breast cancer risk factor. The aim of our study was to investigate association between lifetime low dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) and MD. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study included 467 women aged 40–60 years who underwent screening mammography in Łódź, Poland. The digital mammography examination of the breasts included both craniocaudal and mediolateral oblique views. The volumetric breast density (VBD) (%) and fibrograndular tissue volume (FG) (cm3) were determined based on the analysis of mammographic image (“for processing”) using Volpara Imaging Software. The exposure to IR was estimated for each individual, based on the data from interviews about diagnostic or therapeutic medical procedures performed in the area of the neck, chest, abdomen and spine, which involved X-rays and γ rays and the data about the doses derived from literature. Linear and logistic regression were fitted with VBD and FG as the outcomes and organ breast dose, effective dose and number of mammographies as the determinants, adjusted for major confounders. Results The analyses showed no association between VBD or FG and the breast organ dose or the effective dose. The only significant finding observed concerned the association between the number of mammographies and the FG volume with β coefficient: 0.028 (95% CI: 0.012–0.043), and predicted mean FG volume >13.4 cm3 among the women with >3 mammographies when compared to those with none. Conclusions This study does not, in general, provide support for the positive association between LDIR and MD. The weak association of the FG volume with the number of mammographies warrants further verification in larger independent studies.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of low-radiation exposure on detachment of the vascular endothelial cells. Circulating endothelial cells (CEC) were measured in the peripheral blood by an immunomagnetic separation (IMS) technique in 63 workers occupationally exposed to low-level ionizing radiation at the Atomic Energy Commission of Syria and in 28 controls. We found a significant difference in CEC numbers in the peripheral blood of the workers exposed to low-level ionizing radiation in comparison with those of the control samples (p = 0.0001) and no significant difference in the proportion of other blood elements in the peripheral circulation. Elevated number of CEC in occupational workers exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation may reflect an early affection of the endothelium. Long-term follow-up of these workers must be conducted to determine the clinical value of CEC as an early indicator of cardiovascular disease induced as a result of chronic occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation.

Introduction and objective. In the light of current data concerning the growing exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) originating from atrificial sources, especially from medical ones, and also related to occupational exposure, it is justifiable to systematize the state of knowledge concerning the effect of IR on the male reproductive system. Brief description of the state of knowledge. There is no basis for the application of the hypothesis of hormesis in the area of male reproductive health. Regarding the impact of IR on spermatogenesis, spermatogonia are less susceptible to the occurrence of DNA damage after exposition to IR, but are characterized by slower DNA repair compared to somatic cells. Damage to the genes after exposure to IR is possible at each stage of spermatogenesis; however, haploidal spermatids show the highest radiosensitivity in this respect. The genetic risk of the cells differentiating during spermatogenesis is limited to one cycle of spermatogenesis, whereas the genetic instability may persist for the whole period of life, and DNA damage induced by IR may be transmitted to future generations. The minimum dose causing detectable DNA damage was 30 Gy. While exceeding this dose, the number of single-strand DNA breaks increases. Among males exposed to IR, a decrease was observed in sperm motility and in the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa as well as in an intensification of vacuolization. The genetic material in the sperm of these males showed higher fragmentation and methylation of genomic DNA. Conclusion. In the context of the epidemiological situation concerning the prevalence of infertility, while assessing the health effects of exposure to IR from artificial, including medical sources, the reproductive risk should be considered.

Introduction and objective. The tendency towards postponement of maternity implies a greater exposure of female germ cells to damaging environmental effects, including ionizing radiation (IR). Progress in paediatric oncology, based on the use of radiotherapy, also implies the occurrence of gonadal dysfunctions and subsequent female fertility disorders. Therefore, it seems justifiable to systematize the state of knowledge concerning the effect of IR on the female reproductive system. Brief description of the state of knowledge. A considerable part of studies concerning the effect of IR on female germ cells have been conducted on animals. Their extrapolation to humans is hindered because in animal studies high acute exposures are applied, which do not reflect human environmental exposures characterized by chronic low dose exposure. Studies on animals provide a heterogenous image, which hinders the formulation of unequivocal conclusions and indicates that radiosensitivity depends, i.a. on IR dose, stage of development of oocytes, the applied marker of the effects of IR, or on the species. LD50 of human oocytes is estimated to be below 2 Gy. The effect of IR depends, i.a. on the dose fractionation and the age (older women are more radiosensitive). In females, the effective sterilizing dose is: at birth 20.3 Gy, at 10 years 18.4 Gy, at 20 years 16.5 Gy, whereas at 30 years 14.3 Gy, which is associated with the available pool of ovarian follicles. Conclusions. Within the range of low doses received as a result of environmental exposure to IR, there is no evidence for the occurrence of either adverse pregnancy outcomes, nor fertility disorders in females. These effects may be related to the cancer radiotherapy, or exposure to high IR doses during nuclear accidents.

Several lines of evidence indicate that exposure of heart to ionizing radiation increases the risk of cardiotoxicity manifested by heart dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases. It was initially believed that the heart is an organ relatively resistant to radiation. Currently, however, it is suspected that even low doses of radiation (< 2 Gy) may have a negative impact on the cardiovascular system. Cardiotoxicity of ionizing radiation is associated with metabolic changes observed in cardiac cells injured by radiation. In this study, we used human cardiomyocytes as a model system, and studied their metabolic response to radiation using high-resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (HR-MAS NMR). Human cardiomyocytes cultured in vitro were exposed to ionizing radiation and their survival was assessed by clonogenic assay. Changes in apoptosis intensity and cell cycle distribution after the irradiation were measured as well. NMR spectra of cardiomyocytes were acquired using Bruker Avance 400 MHz spectrometer at a spinning rate of 3200 Hz. Survival of cardiomyocytes after NMR experiments was assessed by the Trypan blue exclusion assay. Exposure of cardiomyocytes to small doses of ionizing radiation had no effect on cell proliferation potential and intensity of cell death. However, analysis of metabolic profiles revealed changes in lipids, threonine, glycine, glycerophosphocholine, choline, valine, isoleucine, glutamate, reduced glutathione and taurine metabolism. The results of this study showed that ionizing radiation affects metabolic profiles of cardiomyocytes even at low doses, which potentially have no effect on cell viability.

When analyzing time series we can often observe that they have periodic oscillations (cyclic, seasonal). One of the methods which can be applied to investigate such a phenomenon and which belongs to the group of periodic components models is the method of harmonic analysis. The method consists in analyzing the oscillations around the medium level a0 and building a model as the sum of so called harmonics. The paper presents the applicability potential of harmonic analysis in the forecasting process of radiation hazard on post-mining grounds (mine waters with raised content of radium Ra226 and Ra-228 drained off to the surface), using for that purpose the measurement results of radium concentration from the area of mine water catchment from the years 2004-2013.

Opis:
Objectives Ionizing radiation was known to cause disruption of cytoskeleton. However, the disorganization of the cytoskeleton leads to form microparticles (MP) that carry membrane and cytoplasmic constituents from their parent cells they are released from. Therefore, authors investigated the effect of the occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation on MP levels. Material and Methods The current study was conducted on 38 healthy medical workers occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation and 29 controls matched by gender, age, and smoking habits. The MP levels measured by flow cytometry were classified as positive or negative phosphatidylserine (PS⁺ or PS⁻), and phenotyped according to their cellular origin. Results Total MP (PS–/PS+) levels, regardless of phenotype, were significantly higher in workers occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation than in healthy individuals (p = 0.0004). Negative phosphatidylserine microparticles were predominant in medical exposed workers and, to a lesser extent, in controls (68% and 57%, respectively). With regard to phenotypic characterization of cellular origin, MP derived from platelets (CD41a+), endothelial (CD146+), leucocytes (CD45+) and erythrocytes (CD235a+) MP were significantly enhanced in exposed workers compared with controls (p < 0.0001). However, no significant difference was found in the proportion of the other blood elements in the peripheral circulation between the 2 groups. Serum levels of C-reactive protein were normal for all individuals. In addition, no association was observed between MP levels and the studied confounding factors. Conclusions The results suggest that elevated circulating MP levels represent an indicator of cellular damage caused by medical exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation. By consequence, the quantification of MP seems to be a useful biomarker for assessing the negative effects of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. Objectives Interventional cardiologists (ICs) are occupationally exposed to low or moderate doses of ionizing radiation from repeated exposures. It is not clear whether these occupational conditions may affect their eye lens. Therefore, the risk of radiation-induced cataract in the cohort of Polish interventional cardiologists is analyzed in this paper. Material and Methods The study group consisted of 69 interventional cardiologists and 78 control individuals occupationally unexposed to ionizing radiation. The eye lens opacities were examined using a slit camera and evaluated with Lens Opacities Grading System III. Cumulative eye lens doses were estimated retrospectively using a questionnaire including data on occupational history. Results The average cumulative dose to the left and right eye lens of the ICs was 224 mSv and 85 mSv, respectively. Nuclear opalescence and nuclear color opacities in the most exposed left eye were found in 38% of the ICS for both types, and in 47% and 42% of the controls, respectively. Cortical opacities were found in 25% of the ICS and 29% of the controls. Posterior subcapsular opacities were rare: about 7% in the ICs group and 6% in the control group. Overall, there was some, but statistically insignificant, increase in the risk for opacity in the ICs group, relative to the control group, after adjusting for the subjects’ age, gender, smoking status and medical exposure (adjusted OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 0.62–3.59 for the pooled “any-eye any-type” opacity). There was also no evidence for an increased opacity risk with an increase in the dose. Conclusions The study found no statistically significant evidence against the hypothesis that the risk of cataract in the group of the ICs occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation is the same as in the control group. Nevertheless, the adverse effect of ionizing radiation still cannot be excluded due to a relatively small study sample size. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(5):663–75

Introduction and objective. The male reproductive system constitutes a set of tissues which are particularly sensitive to external factors. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between background radioactivity and the quality of the semen of the men who have reported to the infertility treatment facility in 2000–2016 in the Lublin region of eastern Poland. Materials and method. The radioactivity of the ground-level air layer obtained from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Włodawa in the Lublin region was analysed. 4,250 spermiograms of patients who reported to the treatment facility for the first time due to infertility were analysed and correlated to background radioactivity in the Lublin region in 2000–2016. Results. A long-term decrease in the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa of the patients was observed (r=-0.970; p<0.001 in 2000–2009 and r=-0.925; p=0.003 in 2010–2016). Men’s age correlated negatively with sperm motility (r=-0.164; p=0.009) and morphology (r=-0.186; p=0.009). The percentage of spermatozoa with normal morphology was lowered by beta-isotopes of artificial origin in the air in 2000–2009 (r=-0.655; p=0.040) and by the exposure to gamma radiation of the ground-level atmosphere in 2010–2016 (r=-0.676; p=0.048). The percentage of sperm vitality was lowered by gamma radiation in the atmosphere (r=-0.636; p=0.006), but improved by beta isotopes in precipitation (r=0.686; p=0.002) in the whole of the analyzed period. Conclusions. The percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in patients who reported to the infertility treatment depends not only on the age of patient, but also on beta-isotopes of artificial origin and gamma radiation in the atmosphere. Beta isotopes in precipitation affect the improvement of sperm vitality.

The first clinical results are encouraging, and many medical centers express their interest in such a technique.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the studies on changes of selected quality parameters of hydrobiodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyester (AAC). Radiation treatment was performed at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology in Warsaw, using cobalt gamma-ray sources "Issledovatel" (dose rate 0.389 Gy/h) and "GC 5000" (8.5 Gy/h). The material was subjected to the impact of radiation doses of 5, 10, 20 and 40 kGy. Selected parameters of the packaging material, important from the standpoint of a potential application, have been studied: gaseous products of radiolysis, strength parameters in accordance with PN EN ISO 527-3, global migration PN-EN-1186-1:2002, FT-IR analysis using PCA method, contact angle measurement using the drop shape method. The results have demonstrated that there is no significant influence of ionizing radiation on AAC film parameters. Correlation between doses applied and values of measurements has not been found.

The cornstarch: poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films characterized by the alternating ratio of starch:PVA (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100) and containing 30% of glycerol were prepared by solution casting. The films were irradiated with an absorbed dose of 25 kGy with gamma rays in a vacuum and with fast electrons in the air. The films characterized by a high content of starch appeared stiff, while the films characterized by a high content of PVA were highly flexible. The tensile strength and flexibility, as well as swelling and hydrophilicity, increased with the increase in the PVA content in the films. However, the tensile strength and wetting angle values achieved a minimum at an intermediate composition. It was found that irradiation enables to reduce hydrophilicity of the films accompanied by a decrease in their flexibility. No general conclusion concerning the effect of irradiation on tensile strength and swelling behavior can be derived. An increase in the homogeneity of the films and an increase in the compatibility of their components was found by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Strong interactions of the starch and the PVA components were discovered by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Degradation was found to be the prevailing process occurring in the films under the infl uence of irradiation. The possible accompanying crosslinking is discussed in terms of the gel content in the samples. Creation of various oxidation products in the films characterized by the modified composition was observed under the influence of irradiation carried out in the air. Basing on the obtained results it can be supposed that the selected starch-PVA compositions might appear useful as packagings of the products predicted for radiation decontamination.

Opis:
Background: In this work we studied the relationship between the enhanced expression of DR5 receptor and the effect of combination of TRAIL and ionizing radiation on cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction in human leukemia cell line HL-60. Material and methods: DR5, APO2.7 and cell cycle were analyzed by flow cytometry. Proteins Bid and Mcl-1 were analyzed by Western-blotting. For clonogenic survival, colony assay on methylcellulose was used. Results: Ionizing radiation caused significantly enhanced positivity of DR5 receptors 24 h after irradiation with high doses (6 and 8 Gy). An increase of DR5 receptor positivity after a dose of 2 Gy was not statistically significant and application of TRAIL 48 h after irradiation did not increase the apoptosis induction. However, a decrease of radiation-induced G2 phase arrest and an increase of apoptosis were observed when TRAIL was applied 16 h before irradiation with the dose of 2 Gy. Incubation with 6 µg/l TRAIL for 16 h reduced D0 value from 2.9 Gy to 1.5 Gy. The induction of apoptosis by TRAIL was accompanied by Bid cleavage and a decrease of antiapoptotic Mcl-1 16 h after incubation with TRAIL. Conclusion: TRAIL in concentration of 6 µg/l applied 16 h before irradiation by the dose of 1.5 Gy caused the death of 63% of clonogenic tumor cells, similarly as the dose of 2.9 Gy alone, which is in good correlation with the enhanced apoptosis induction.

Opis:
The linear no-threshold (LNT) hypothesis of cancer risk assessment resulting from exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) constitutes the basis of our radiological protection philosophy and regulations. This hypothesis assumes that each absorbed dose of IR, no matter how small, is potentially carcinogenic and that the effects of low doses (not exceeding 100 mGy and 0.1 mGy/min for acute and chronic exposures, respectively) can be extrapolated from those of high doses of IR. However, evidence accumulated over many years clearly indicates that absorption of low radiation doses does not cause harm and often promotes health. In this review I provide examples of the results of both epidemiological analyses and controlled experimental studies which indicate that there is a qualitative difference between the effects of low vs. high doses of IR and that the LNT tenet lacks scientific justification. I also outline the genesis and reasons for its persistence as well as numerous negative consequences of using the latter and conclude it’s high time to replace the LNT dogma with a scientifically-based relationship such as a hormetic or a threshold dose-response model.

Radiation technology may contribute to the environmental protection to a great extent. Electron beam industrial installations for flue gases containing SOx and NOx treatment have been already built in China and Poland. The same technology for high sulphur and high humidity off-gases (low quality lignite) has been successfully tested in an industrial pilot plant in Bulgaria. Pilot plant tests performed in Japan have illustrated that by applying electron beam for municipal waste incinerator off-gases treatment the concentration of dioxins can be reduced by 80%, other persistent organic pollutants can be depredated as well. The positive results of electron beam wastewater treatment are the basis for a full-scale industrial plant being built in the South Korea. A pilot gamma plant for sludge irradiation producing a high grade organic fertilizer is in operation in India. All these achievements are reported in this paper.

The paper describes an investigation of a static friction coefficient of PE-UHMW polyethylene subjected to ionizing radiations and aging, which imitated a biological influence of the human body on the tested material. Tribological tests were conducted in a reciprocating motion at the beginning of movement against ANSI 316L austenitic stainless steel and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, both common materials applied in implantation surgery. Changes in the static friction coefficient were analysed in association with a contact pressure (in the range 0.5–2.5 MPa) depending on the ionizing radiation dose of PE-UHMW (in the range 25–250 kGy), for both kinds of metal counter samples. The studies confirmed that the static friction coefficient decreases with an increase in contact pressure (in the tested range). It has been found that the optimal ionizing radiation dose, due to the friction value, falls between 100 and 250 kGy, for all tested contact pressures and material couples. The mechanism of the reduction in frictional resistance values has not been identified in this case and requires further research, and the kinetic friction resistance needs to be determined.

Large quantity of sewage sludge originating from wastewater treatment plants is becoming a growing problem from environmental and human health points of view. One of the ways to use sewage sludge is agricultural purpose due to its nutrients and organic matter content, but the condition is that it should be deprived of pathogenic bacteria and parasite egg contamination. Application of ionizing radiation to hygienize sewage sludge can make it appropriate for agricultural use. The process does not require addition of chemicals to sludge; it is environmentally friendly and effective in removal of biological threats. In the past, successful attempts of sewage sludge treatment using ionizing radiation were made. Pilot plants and commercial ones proved that pathogens can be easily removed from sewage sludge by ionizing radiation. The concept of ‘zero energy’ biogas plant is based on the construction of a complex system consisting of biogas plant and electron accelerator in the biofertilizer manufacturing line. Digestate originating from the methane fermentation of sewage sludge is irradiated to remove all pathogens using electron beam from an accelerator powered by electric energy obtained from burning biogas in a cogenerator. The product is a high-quality, biologically safe fertilizer.

Wnioski: Przy zachowaniu zasad ochrony radiologicznej oraz warunków bezpiecznego stosowania promieniowania jonizującego dawki otrzymywane przez techników wykonujących badania scyntygraficzne są niskie, co potwierdza zaliczenie tej grupy zawodowej do pracowników kategorii B. Background: Protection of nuclear medicine unit employees from hazards of the ionizing radiation is a crucial issue of radiation protection services. We aimed to assess the severity of the occupational radiation exposure of technicians performing scintigraphic examinations at the Nuclear Medicine Department, Central Teaching Hospital of Medical University in Łódź, where thousands of different diagnostic procedures are performed yearly. Materials and Methods: In 2013 the studied diagnostic unit has employed 10 technicians, whose exposure is permanently monitored by individual dosimetry. We analyzed retrospective data of quarterly doses in terms of Hp(10) dose equivalents over the years 2001-2010. Also annual and five-year doses were determined to relate the results to current regulations. Moreover, for a selected period of one year, we collected data on the total activity of radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostics, to analyze potential relationship with doses recorded in technicians performing the examinations. Results: In a 10-year period under study, the highest annual dose recorded in a technician was 2 mSv, which represented 10% of the annual dose limit of 20 mSv. The highest total dose for a 5-year period was 7.1 mSv, less than 10% of a 5-year dose limit for occupational exposure. Positive linear correlation was observed between total activity of radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnostics in the period of three months and respective quarterly doses received by technicians performing examinations. Conclusions: Doses received by nuclear medicine technicians performing diagnostic procedures in compliance with principles of radiation protection are low, which is confirmed by recognizing the technicians of this unit as B category employees. Exosomes are membrane vesicles of endocytic origin that participate in inter-cellular communication. Environmental and physiological conditions affect composition of secreted exosomes, their abundance and potential influence on recipient cells. Here, we analyzed protein component of exosomes released in vitro from cells exposed to ionizing radiation (2Gy dose) and compared their content with composition of exosomes released from control not irradiated cells. Exosomes secreted from FaDu cells originating from human squamous head and neck cell carcinoma were analyzed using LC-MS/MS approach. We have found that exposure to ionizing radiation resulted in gross changes in exosomal cargo. There were 217 proteins identified in exosomes from control cells and 384 proteins identified in exosomes from irradiated cells, including 148 "common" proteins, 236 proteins detected specifically after irradiation and 69 proteins not detected after irradiation. Among proteins specifically overrepresented in exosomes from irradiated cells were those involved in transcription, translation, protein turnover, cell division and cell signaling. This indicated that exosomal cargo reflected radiation-induced changes in cellular processes like transient suppression of transcription and translation or stress-induced signaling.

The ionizing radiations accompany planet life in its diff erent manifestations of all phases of the evolution. The National Automated System for continuous monitoring of the radiation background has 26 local monitoring stations (LMS) covering the whole country, with greater density around NPP ‘Kozloduy’. Radiometric measurements in real conditions, sampling, and analysis are carried out by the Executive Environment Agency (EEA) at the MoEW and radiological control laboratories. A special place in radiation safety is taken by timely detection of radioactive waste and materials that appear in one way or another in the environment.

Opis:
Human biomonitoring, as a tool to identify health risk from environmental exposures, has gained increasing interest especially in the areas of cancer risk assessment and diseases treatment. Chromosome aberrations resulting from direct DNA breakage or from inhibition of DNA repair or synthesis, measured in peripheral blood lymphocytes, have been used successfully in the assessment of health risk associated to environmental genotoxic exposures. A faster but sensitive and reliable method for detection of DNA damage, or DNA repair capacity, might be crucial to many fields from molecular epidemiology and toxicology to preventive and clinical medicine. There are reports that results of DNA measures with the use of single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) correlate, on the one hand, with physical measures of genotoxins, and on the other hand, with cytogenetic damage that is a biomarker associated to the alteration of the health risk. This review is based on studies in which exposure to radiation was applied as a challenging treatment and DNA damage induced and repaired was analyzed with the use of the alkaline version of SCGE assay. Results from studies on susceptibilities and repair competence carried out in various groups of exposed workers, controls, and cancer patients (more than 700 donors) show variability between donors both in a response to challenging treatment and in the efficiency of repair process. Influences of the occupational exposures and factors depending on genotypes or life style on cellular capacities are observed. Discussed results suggest that study in vitro with the challenging cells by radiation exposure and measuring, with the SCGE assay, the DNA damage before and after repair, may develop a good biomarker of the individual susceptibility to various genotoxins and exposures (environmental, occupational, therapeutic). Such a biomarker may have a potential use in a molecular epidemiology and preclinical identification.

Objectives The aim of the study was a survey-based assessment concerning parents of children undergoing CT examinations and their knowledge of detailed information about procedures involved in imaging diagnostics. Material and Methods A statistical analysis of 108 surveys of parents of children undergoing CT studies in the Department of Pediatric Radiology in Poznań, Poland was done, with the use of Statistica software. Results In result of the evaluation of all subsections of the substantive question number, the majority of answers were incorrect (68–98%). No correlation between the number of CT examinations conducted for a child and the number of correct answers to substantive questions was observed. No correlation between the number of CT examinations conducted for a child and the fact of noting the examination with the use of ionizing radiation down in a child’s health certificate was stated. The statistical analysis showed that children of parents who declared that the aim of the CT examination had been explained to them better underwent more of them. Conclusions Parents are poorly informed about a radiation dose and risk related to a CT examination procedure. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(1):65–73

he movement toward commercialization of the process and the recent actions of various governmental agencies to accept irradiated foods as wholesome, even when high doses are applied has stimulated increased interest in this treatment. Concern for the fate of vitamins when foods are irradiated is almost entirely centered on maintenance of their biological function as essential nutrients. The aim of this work was to assess the effects of ionizing radiation on vitamin A and ßeta-carotene contents in commercialized food products of animal origin, specifically fresh bovine liver and pork pâté de foie. As present Brazilian legislation has no restriction of dose limits to be applied on foods, the 60Co gamma irradiation doses for these experiments were 3 kGy and 30 kGy. The results show a full retention of vitamin content when the applied dose was 3 kGy and a loss of about 60% when the dose was 30 kGy. When applying high doses, it would be necessary to consider this content reduction and proceed to a vitamin supplement when necessary.

Szynki były zamrożone do temp. -30 °C i w stanie zamrożonym poddawane napromienianiu odpowiednią dawką, a następnie pasteryzowane przez 50 min w temp. 80°C. Stwierdzono znaczne obniżenie jakości (szczególnie smakowitości) próbek poddanych działaniu promieniowania w stosunku do próbek kontrolnych.

Ionizing radiation affects the expression of adhesive and co-stimulatory molecules in lymphocytes. The physiological function of cellular isoform of prion protein (PrPc) is little known. Evidences indicate a link between lymphocytes activation and PrPc expression on their surface; however, no direct effect of radiation on PrPc level in these cells was investigated. The objective of this study was to determinate the effect of low doses of ionizing radiation on the expression of PrPc on the surface peripheral blood lymphocytes in the women operating X-ray equipment. In 36 female workers and 30 persons of the control group the PrPc expression on CD3 (T lymphocytes), CD4 (T helper), CD8 (T cytotoxic) and CD19 (B lymphocytes), as well as the percentage of lymphocytes with PrPc on their surface, were tested. Subgroups with respect to age and length of employment were selected. A signifi cant increase was observed in PrPc expression on CD3 and CD4 with lowered PrPc level on CD8 and percentage of CD8 cells with PrPc in workers compared to control. The PrPc level did not show signifi cant changes in subgroups in relation to age (below and over 40 years old) both in the investigated and control groups, whereas a lower percentage of PrPc expressing CD19 cells showed in employed women below 40 years of age. A signifi cant decrease was found in PrPc expression on the surface of CD3, CD4 and CD8 cells in the subgroup employed for over 10 years than in the subgroup with less than 10 years of employment.

Inverted liquid sugar is a mixture of sucrose, glucose and fructose, which shows its relevant characteristic on high sweetness power. Ionizing radiation has been applied to different kind of food and ingredients for different reasons, such as pathogens reduction, disinfestations, quarantine purposes, ripening delay among others. Radiation from an electron beam can be utilized as a technique to treat this ingredient because it can process a great volume of material per unit of time. The main goal of this paper was to verify the effect of radiation on the properties of inverted liquid sugar. This ingredient was irradiated in an electron accelerator (Radiation Dynamics) at a dose ranging from 5 to 50 kGy. Sucrose content measurements were reduced by 23% at 30 kGy when compared to control and the reduced sugar content increased around 11%. Density and moisture values were not affected by radiation. The total soluble solids (Brix degrees) rose in function of the absorbed dose.

The decomposition of diclofenac (DCF) in sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant was investigated. It was found that adsorption of DCF on sludge is about 40%. Compared to previous studies, where the degradation yield in aqueous solution was 100%, in those experiments at the dose up to 5 kGy, only 50% of initial DCF concentration of 50 mg L−1 was decomposed in sediment and in solution over the sediment. The experiments were carried out using both gamma radiation and electron beam. It has been observed that DCF in the aqueous phase, above the sediment, was decomposed with the same efficiency using both gamma radiation and electron beam. Whereas for DCF in the sediment, a higher degradation efficiency was found when gamma radiation was applied. This is most likely due to the limited penetration depth of the electron beam into the sludge layer. It was shown that the applied peroxide addition (in a stoichiometric amount needed for complete mineralization of 50 mg L−1 DCF) did not cause increase in yield of DCF decomposition.

The effects of gamma irradiation on the vernalization requirements, growth and development of winter wheat grown in a rainout shelter were studied during two successive growing seasons. Dry grains of winter wheat cv. Kobra were irradiated with 300 Gy radiation from a cobalt 60 gamma irradiator. Treated and control grains were pregerminated and subjected to vernalization for 0, 42 or 54 days. Morphological parameters of the plants developing from irradiated seeds (M1 generation) and the plants grown from the seeds produced by the irradiated plants (M2 generation) were measured in order to track the studied effects over two generations. Irradiation of dry grains slowed the growth and development of the plants regardless of the temperature treatment. The measured yield structure elements appeared to be lower for irradiated plants, but no clear effect of radiation on vernalization requirements was noted.

Objectives Geothermal waters may contain soluble, radioactive radon gas. Spa facilities that use geothermal water may be a source of an increased radiation dose to people who stay there. It has been necessary to assess the exposure to radon among people: workers and visitors of spa centers that use geothermal waters. Material and Methods In 2013, workers of the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine measured concentrations of radon over the geothermal water surfaces in 9 selected Polish spa centers which use geothermal water for recreational and medicinal purposes. The measurements were performed by active dosimetry using Lucas scintillation cells. Results According to our research, the doses received by the personnel in Polish geothermal spas are < 0.6 mSv/year. In 1 of the investigated spas, the estimated annual dose to the staff may exceed 3 mSv/year. Conclusions In Polish geothermal spas, neither the workers nor the visitors are at risk of receiving doses that exceed the safe limits.

Background. X-ray examination is a popular and universally used injury and disease diagnostic method. A distinctive X ray examination feature is that it can be done quickly which is extremely important in case of the need for rapid diagnosis of patients in life threatening condition. Another advantage of the X-ray examinations is also relatively low cost of carry. However, X-ray examination involve adverse health effects. During the examination the patient is subjected to ionizing radiation that might have impact on his health. Objective. The aim of this study has been to determine and assess the size of the entrance surface doses (ESD) received by patients during selected X-ray examinations performed on the basis of the medical working procedures available in healthcare entities in Masovian Voivodeship in Poland. Materials and Method. The examinations were conducted for 71 X-ray units located in the Masovian Voivodeship. Measurements of doses received by the patients were based on our own validated test methods. Results. It was found that the range applied to the high voltage in healthcare entities does not always coincide with the values specified in the standard procedures. It was found in the skull projection radiography AP and LAT that the recorded values were from range 60 to 82 kV (the average value of 74 kV) while in accordance with a standard procedure they should be in the range from 65 to 75 kV. Only in case of cervical spine radiography in the AP projection, the LAT exposure conditions were matching with the standard obligatory procedures in Poland. The consequence of selecting exposure conditions are significant differences in the size of the doses the patient receive during the same medical procedures. The greatest range of ESD doses was found during radiography of the thoracic spine in the projection AP and LAT. The projection LAT measured values were in the range of 523 to 10550 μGy (average value 2175 μGy). Conclusions. It is necessary to update immediately the standard procedures and to develop detailed guidelines for the preparation of working procedures in X-ray rooms.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Zbadano 71 aparatów rentgenowskich wykorzystywanych w placówkach ochrony zdrowia na terenie województwa mazowieckiego. Pomiary dawek otrzymywanych przez pacjentów podczas badań rentgenowskich przeprowadzono własnymi zwalidowanymi metodami badawczymi. Wyniki. Najlepszą zgodność pomiędzy wartościami wysokiego napięcia stosowanymi w pracowniach rtg a tymi określonymi w procedurach wzorcowych obowiązujących w Polsce stwierdzono w przypadku radiografii kręgosłupa szyjnego.

Opis:
As radiation science and technology advances, nuclear medicine applications are increasing worldwide which necessitate the understanding of biological implications of such practices. Ionizing radiation has been shown to cause degraded matrix and reduced proteoglycan synthesis in cartilage, and the late consequences of which may include degenerative arthritis or arthropathy. Although degenerative effects of the ionizing radiation on cartilage tissue have been demonstrated, the effects on the mechanical properties of articular cartilage are largely unknown. The radiopharmaceuticals, technetium-99m and technetium-99m sestamibi, were utilized on bovine articular cartilage to investigate these effects. We used two different mechanical tests to determine the mechanical properties of articular cartilage. Dynamic and static mechanical tests were applied to calculate compressive modulus for articular cartilage. We observed clearly higher control modulus values than that of experimental groups which account for lesser stiffness in the exposed cartilage. In conclusion, compressive moduli of bovine articular cartilage were found to decrease after radiopharmaceutical exposure, after both instantaneous and equilibrium mechanical experiments.

Opis:
In this study, factors that limit the utilization of electron beam irradiation for decomposition of pollutants were investigated. Potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) was used as the model pollutant compound. The accumulated chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal below 2.4 kGy (applied for concentration at 85, 170, 255, 425 and 850 mg/l) was less than 10 per cent, whereas the accumulated COD removal at 215 kGy (applied for concentration at 85, 170, 255, 425 and 850 mg/l) was 198 per cent. At a lower concentration of KHP, 85 mg/l, the accumulated COD removal (for dose ranging from 0.5 to 215 kGy) was 236per cent. As the concentration of KHP increases to 850 mg/l, almost no COD removal was recorded (for dose ranging from 0.5 to 215 kGy). The results show that the removal efficiency and effectiveness of pollutants were influenced by the solute concentration and irradiation dose. When the concentration of KHP increases to a certain level, water radical species were not sufficient to form KHP radicals and, therefore, reduce the decomposition of KHP molecules. Removal of phthalate as measured by COD was restricted at a very high concentration, 850 mg/l. This indicates that the by-products have scavenged the radicals rapidly. This also suggests that, the limitation of radiolytic products of water to decompose KHP at higher concentration. A large quantity of KHP molecules would also stabilize the KHP radicals and resulting in lower removal of KHP. Similar removal trend was also observed for the actual industrial wastewater.

Opis:
Recently, significant attention has been paid to the possibility of thwarting cancer progression by inhibition of neoangiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) in growing tumors. Although general mechanisms of angiogenesis have been elucidated, virtually nothing is known about the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation on pro-angiogenic properties of endothelial cells. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of a low (0.2 Gy), intermediate (1 Gy), and high (4 Gy) doses of X-rays on a few angiogenesis-related parameters of isolated murine endothelial cells. We show here that 24 to 48 hours after irradiation with 0.2 Gy the cell proliferation was inhibited to a similar extent as after the exposure to 1 Gy. Also, adhesion of the 0.2 Gy-irradiated cells to both gelatin and MatrigelŽ was inhibited 24 hours post-exposure, whereas irradiation with 1 or 4 Gy resulted in the increased adhesion of the cells to these substrata. Similar effects were observed during the "wound" migration assay. Finally, 24 hours after exposure of the cells to 0.2 Gy of X-rays, the surface expression of the â3 integrin subunit was down-regulated, whereas irradiations with 1 and 4 Gy of X-rays resulted in the significantly elevated expression of this subunit. These results indicate that proliferating endothelial cells are sensitive in vitro to relatively low doses of ionizing radiation
