Opis:
Effects of heavy metals on plants result in growth inhibition, structure damage, a decline of physiological and biochemical activities as well as of the function of plants. The effects and bioavailability of heavy metals depend on many factors, such as environmental conditions, pH, and species of element, organic substances of the media and fertilization, plant species. But, there are also studies on plant resistance mechanisms to protect plants against the toxic effects of heavy metals. The microorganisms act in synergism with the plants for effective phytoremediation. This synergistic relationship promotes the exchange of water and nutrients established between plant roots and specialized soil microorganisms thus, enhancing the plant growth. The application of microorganisms in phytoremediation helps to improve plant growth and survival rate. The microbial activity in the contaminated site acts as an indicator for the plant growth and bioremediation. So an attempt were made on the toxic effects of chromium in paddy plants growth and yield and thereby mitigating its toxicity by using microbial inoculants especially Azospirillum.

Opis:
Sediments of Rzeszów Reservoir were characterized by a higher content of zinc compared to other heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni and Cd). The strongest correlations between pairs of heavy metals were Cr-Ni, Ni-Zn, Cu-Ni and Cr-Zn, while there was also a clear relationship between the total chromium and nickel content and the pH value, as well as the percentage of organic matter in the sediments (Cr, Zn, Cu, Ni). The content of chromium and copper occurred at levels exceeding the geochemical background, and the sediments could be classified as of purity class 2 (according to the PIG criterion) or class 3 (according to the Müller’s classification). Ecotoxicological criteria indicate that levels of chromium, nickel and cadmium could affect aquatic life. However, the heavy metals differ in mobility and bioavailability. The highest percentage of ion exchangeable fraction was recorded for nickel, and the lowest for chromium. This means that sediments have a greater ability to release nickel into the water column, as a result of which they are a secondary source of pollution for the aquatic ecosystem.

Opis:
Utilization of agricultural waste material with approach to enhance the heavy metal remediation properties by carbonizing the biomass at nano size particles has been explored in present investigation from aqueous solutions. In this study the lignocellulosic, nitrogenous agricultural waste biomass Delbergia sissoo pods (DSP) has been tried for sequestering of Cd (II), Pb (II) and Ni (II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were performer for removal of targeted metal ions keeping in consideration the preliminary affecting parameters such as effect of adsorption dose, pH, initial metal ion concentration, stirring speed and contact time. The sorption studies were analyzed by using, Freundlic isotherm and Langmuir isotherm models. The kinetics of the process was evaluated by pseudo pseudo-fi rst order and pseudo second order kinetic models. Studies reveal that the equilibrium was achieved with in 30 min of the contact time at optimized parameters. Analytical studies of biosorbent were done by means of FT-IR, SEM and XRD. Desorption experiments were carried out using HCl solution with a view to regenerate the spent adsorbent and to recover the adsorbed metal ions.

Opis:
This research was conducted to overcome the Cu2+ heavy metal pollution in the environment through a biotechnological approach with heavy metal sorption process by microalgae beads. Biosorbent in form of beads was produced from Chlorella sorokiniana, Monoraphidium sp., and Scenedesmus obliquus tropical microalgae mobilized with Naalginate polymer. The sorption process is observed on a controlled batch culture with variations of temperature (25, 35, and 45 °C), and observation periods (200th, 220th, 250th, 270th min) as contact time. The absorption efficiency on each temperature variation reaches more than 90%, but the highest absorption efficiency rate is at 92.20% on 35 °C temperature and 200 minutes of contact time. Biosorbent beads with 2–3 mm of diameters show the best sorption ability than the 3–4 mm and 4–5 mm ones. Sorption process is also evident with the existence of intensity alteration on amide, ketone, and sulfhydryl function groups which were consistently weakened until the end of the sorption process. The beads utilized in this research are potentially reusable as biosorbent. Thus, further examination is required to acknowledge the maximum reutilization rate of the beads as biosorbent on heavy metal absorption process.

Opis:
Algae are very diverse photosynthetic plants that have neither roots nor leafy shoots and which also lack vascular tissues (VAN DEN HOEK et al., 1995). Most of them are aquatic organisms and occur both in fresh and saline waters, but they also inhabit terrestrial environments. As pioneers, algae take part in primary production and in colonization of poor and degraded habitats. The primary impact of heavy metals on algae is at the biochemical and physiological levels. These biochemical and physiological effects may cause ecological effects. Usually, in heavy metal-polluted environments algal biomass as well as algal species diversity decrease. In such places the sensitive organisms and species in algal communities may be replaced by tolerant ones as a consequence of chemical stress. The observed shift in species composition in a community affected by heavy metals is not a random process; chronic exposure to low concentrations of heavy metals may act as a selection factor. Preliminary studies on algal species diversity and heavy metal resistance of species inhabiting Zn, Pb or Cu polluted sites (near metallurgical and mining plants in Silesia) are described.

Bentonite clay was utilized in this research as adsorbent element to remove the lead and copper ions from wastewater. Series of tests were performed at multiple parameters, such as pH solution, initial concentration of lead and copper ions, adsorbent mass, and contact time. The greatest removal was attained at pH 5, adsorbent weight of 0.5 g, initial heavy metal concentration of 10 mg/l, and a contact time of 60 minutes. The results revealed that bentonite clay is suitable in the removal of metal ions from polluted water. The ion exchange rate of lead was faster than that of copper. The isotherm for the adsorption of the lead and copper ions on bentonite clay was confirmed by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms which offered good consequences. The results indicated that bentonite was utilized as an efficient ion exchange element for the removal of heavy metal ions from polluted water. Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) images of bentonite clay before and after adsorption showed the imbibition of metal ions by bentonite clay.

Model research on competitive sorption of heavy metal cations (Cu2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ ,Co2+ , Cd2+ and Cr3+ ) with Ph2+cations was carried out in the followingmineral soils: grey-brown podzolic derived from loess (Orthic Luvisols)using a dynamic method.Investigation on the course and the range of the sorption from the two- component solutions allowed to determine mobility of individual heavy metal cations in relation to lead (II) cations. At the same time, it allowed to evaluate their phyto-availability. Elements, which most easily entered sorptive complexes of both of the investigated soils were copper (II) and chrominium (III) cations. The rest of the cations showed different energy levels of entrance with simultaneous sorption with lead (II) cations. During competitive sorption of heavy metal cations, i.e. at saturation the columns with two component solution, the presence of the second, opposite process namely desorption of the following cations from the soil:Co2+ , Zn2+ , Ni2+ , and Cd2+ was observed. Desorption levels were characteristic for particular cations and depended on the type of soil.

Opis:
Heavy metal contamination of soil occurs when heavy metals are introduced to soil through human activities, leading to the gradual deterioration of the ecology and environment. Microorganism activity reflects the intensity of various biochemical reactions in soil, and changes in it reflect the level of heavy metal pollution affecting the soil. The effects were studied of heavy metal Cd on the microbial activity of soil at different concentrations by investigating the respiratory intensity, urease activity, and catalase activity in forest soil and garden soil. The results showed that the respiratory intensity, urease and catalase activities in the garden soil were all higher than in the forest soil. Cd has obvious inhibitory effects on microbial activities. The three parameters exhibited a downward trend with increasing concentrations of Cd. Catalase activity increased when the mass concentration of Cd reached 1.0 mg/kg, indicating that low concentrations of Cd can promote the activity of some microorganisms. Respiratory intensity and urease activity also increased when the concentration reached 10.0 mg/kg, showing that respiratory intensity and urease activity have strong response mechanisms to adverse conditions. The effective state of Cd in soil, as well as inhibition of microbial activity, decreased with incubation time.

Opis:
The studies of (heavy) metal culture, the oeuvre of female artists, singers, lyricists, etc., still await in-depth interdisciplinary research endeavours. This article devoted special attention to female artists whose artistic, stage and image activities largely employ strategies of provocation, scandalisation, “ceremonial profanation.” When it comes to image (self)creation, an interesting category is the process of variability and fluidity of the emploi, especially in relation to subversive and transgressional activities. Wendy Orlean Williams, Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey from Butcher Babies discussed here have aroused frequent controversies in their activity in the patriarchal system of popular culture. The subversive artistic and image strategies used by the singers are nevertheless a part of the over fifty-years-long history and aesthetics of metal culture. The oeuvre of the Californian band forms an evident dialogue with the provocative art of the eccentric singer Williams. The colourful artistic emploi of those female artists attests to the diversity and complexity of metal culture.
W studiach nad kulturą (heavy)metalową twórczość artystek, piosenkarek, autorek tekstów etc. oczekuje jeszcze pogłębionych interdyscyplinarnych opracowań. W prezentowanym artykule szczególna uwaga została poświęcona twórczyniom, których działania artystyczne, sceniczne i wizerunkowe w znacznej mierze wykorzystują strategie prowokacji, skandalizacji, “ceremonialnych profanacji”. W perspektywie (auto)kreacji wizerunkowej interesujący okazuje się proces zmienności i płynności emploi, szczególnie w odniesieniu do działań o wywrotowym i transgresywnym charakterze. Barwne artystyczne emploi twórczyń świadczy zaś o różnorodności i złożoności kultury metalowej.

In order to evaluate the effects of different transportation hubs on cultivated soil and apricots, macro and micro elements and heavy metal contents of fruit, leaf, kernel and soil samples collected from apricot orchards located at the border of the railroad, the motorway, the airport, and an orchard far from transportation modes were detected by ICP/OES (inductively coupled plasma / optical emission spectrometry). The results indicated the highest Cd, Pb and Ni contents of soil, fruit, and kernel samples under impacts of railroad transportation modes, whereas the highest contents of leaf were found under motorway side. All fruit samples contained higher amounts of Cd and Pb compared to permissible limits of FAO/WHO, and contents differentiated between sampling locations. There were no correlative relations found between transportation modes and macro-micro element contents. As a conclusion, in terms of heavy metal contamination, the orchards located at railway sides have the highest risk and this was followed by motorway side.

Ceramic - metal composites are widely used materials in a whole world. There were invented many fabrication methods for those kind of materials, but still exists some problems which need to be fixed. Stability of high density metal particles (e.g. W, Mo, Nb) in ceramic-metal composite suspensions is one of crucial issues to be solved in order to obtain homogenous composite material with desired properties such as high fracture toughness, mechanical strength, hardness, wear resistance. In this paper, results of two different methods of stabilizing W particles in Al2O3 - W - H2O system were compared. The zeta potential by laser doppler electrophoresis, stability by static multiple light scattering and rheological behavior of prepared suspensions were analyzed. As a result application of hetero-flocculation effect was consider as a good way to obtain homogeneous dispersion of metal particles with a high density.

We attempt to prepare a heavy metal adsorbent from palm shell with a simple-two step process using pyrolysis and sulfur impregnation. Palm shell was pyrolyzed with three different methods; rapid pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, and KOH pyrolysis, and the prepared char with high specific surface area was sulfurized with H2S impregnation to obtain the sulfur-impregnated char with the adsorption ability of heavy metals. The pyrolysis char with high specific surface area can be obtained by KOH pyrolysis, which was pre-treated with KOH solution before slow pyrolysis, and can added sulfur into KOH pyrolysis char using H2S gas. The sulfur content of sulfur-impregnated char increased with increasing the time of H2S treatment, and increased the adsorption amount of Pb2+ from aqueous solution. The sulfur impregnated char was more effective for Pb2+ and Zn2+ adsorption than commercial charcoal.

Opis:
Environmental pollution particularly heavy metal pollution into aquatic ecosystem has led to multiple damage in almost all life forms. Cadmium is one of the priority pollutant listed by United States Environmental Protection Agency or US EPA that widely known to have an adverse effect to organisms as well as human health. One type of organism that is susceptible to the effects of metal pollution is phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is a group of microalgae that are easy to find and are primary producers in aquatic environments. Phytoplankton plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems because they serve as primary producers. They are representing the water total primary productivity and reinforcing the aquatic life on the higher food chain. Thus, any threats that endangered the population of phytoplankton can lead to trophical cascade or even worse, biodiversity loss. The exposure of cadmium in high concentration to phytoplankton can lead to various impact including cell damage and disruption, biosynthesis inhibition of photosynthetic pigment (e.g. chlorophyll and carotenoid), chlorphyll degradation or known as chlorosis, thylakoid membrane degradation, inhibition of cellular metabolism and cell division. It is important to study the impact of cadmium to phytoplankton in a cellular level to better understand what mechanism lies and to what extent that the cadmium will be transferred to higher trophical organism via bioaccumulation or biomagnification.

Opis:
The work was aimed at studying abilities of soil microorganisms to participate in metal/radionuclide mobility processes by accumulating them. Soil microorganisms were treated with a mixture of heavy metals (Cr(III), Ni, Fe(III), Mn(II), Cd) in order to isolate the most tolerant ones. Among more metal-tolerant microorganisms microscopic fungi dominated. Tests of fungal tolerance towards each metal showed that the most tolerant fungi to almost all metals were Aspergillus niger, Penicillium oxalicum and Paecilomyces lilacinus. Accumulation ability of metal-tolerant fungi was tested using Pu(IV) and Fe(III). Investigation of Pu accumulation by fungal biomass showed that all the fungi accumulated Pu, and among the most effective radionuclide accumulators Eupenicillium sp., Penicillium oxalicum and Aspergillus niger could be mentioned. All the fungi showed high Fe-accumulation capacity. While growing in the medium with 1 mM iron, most fungi accumulated over 90% of Fe in their biomass. Very good accumulation and growth abilities in Fe-supplemented medium were demonstrated by Paecilomyces lilacinus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of additives such as waste moulding sands (WMS) and dolomite flotation waste (F) on heavy metal immobilization during vitrification of tannery sewage sludge. Sewage sludge with addition of waste moulding sands of 25-45 vol. % and flotation waste of 5-25 vol. % was used in the vitrification process. The study demonstrated a direct correlation between the WMS fraction in the vitrified formulations and heavy metal immobilization in the obtained vitrificates. Vitrification of sewage sludge with these additives resulted in obtaining vitreous products with reduced heavy metal leaching properties; the lowest content of heavy metals in the leachates was found in the vitrificates with the highest content of waste moulding sands.

Opis:
When heavy metal contaminated soils are excluded from food production, biomass crops offer an alternative commercial opportunity. Perennial crops have potential for phytoremediation. Whilst the conditions at heavy metal contaminated sites are challenging, successful phytoremediation would bring significant economic and social benefits. Seed-based Miscanthus hybrids were tested alongside the commercial clone Miscanthus × giganteus on arable land, contaminated with Pb, Cd and Zn near Katowice. Before the randomized experimental plots were established (25m2 plots with plant density 2/m2) ‘time-zero’ soil samples were taken to determine initial levels of total (aqua regia) and bioavailable (CaCl2 extraction) concentration of Pb, Cd and Zn. After the growing season plant material was sampled during autumn (October, green harvest) and winter (March, brown harvest) to determine differences in heavy metal uptake. Results after the first growing season are presented, including the plot establishment success, biomass yield and heavy metal uptake.

Opis:
Landfills with the open dumping method cause many environmental pollution problems, such as pollution, soil, surface water, and groundwater. Pollution cleaning technology (remediation) to reduce the harmful effects in the locations contaminated with heavy metals can be implemented by means of several methods, including using phytoremediation as a barrier to heavy metal contamination in order to preventing contamination distribution to the environment. Ferns (phytoremediation) on the side of the open dumping landfill were investigated as phytoremediation, inhibiting the distribution of heavy metals into the environment. The descriptive-analytic research method was used to analyze the ability of ferns in an open dumping landfill in peatland areas as a barrier to metal contamination distributed to the environment. The results show that ferns can bind heavy metals, such as Hg and Pb, produced from open dumping landfill activities to prevent the distribution of heavy metals to the environment around the landfill. Ferns are able to block the distribution of heavy metals into the environment, especially Pb and Hg. The ability of ferns to become potential plants in peatland areas requires further testing of other heavy metals.

This study presented a self-designed prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) model and used Fluka simulation to simulate the heavy metals (Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni, Cr, Pb) in soil samples. The relationship between the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal and soil thickness, content of heavy metals in the soil, and source distance was obtained. Simulation results show that the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal increases with the increase in soil thickness and reaches saturation at 18 cm. The greater the proportion of heavy metals in the soil, the greater the prompt gamma-ray yield. The highest content is approximately 3%, and the change in distance between the neutron source and soil sample does not affect the prompt gamma-ray yield of heavy metals.

Four metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were assayed in soils within the impact zone of the Miasteczko Slaskie Zinc Smelter (southern Poland). The investigated area is afforested and has been subjected for a long time to intensive deposition of metal-bearing dusts. Soil pHKCl varied broadly from very acidic (pHKCl = 3.4) to slightly alkaline (pHKCl = 7.2). Organic carbon (Corg) content fluctuated within a large range, i.e., 5.5 - 66.4 g kg-1, whereas the cation exchange capacity (CEC) was in most cases markedly low (from 1.4 to 5.9 cmol(+)kg-1), with exception for two sites (C and D) exhibiting values of 26.8 and 15.1 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively. Total Zn, Pb and Cd contents exceeded manifold their respective levels in the Earth crust (reference value - RV)) as well as those suggested as background levels for Poland (BLP). The assessment of the contamination of soils by these metals was undertaken on the basis of geoaccumulation indices (lgeo), contamination factors Cl and degrees of contamination (Cdeg). The overall metal contamination represented practically two classes: low contamination for Cu; considerable to extreme contamination (in ascending order) for Zn, Cd, and Pb. The contribution (BLP-based assessment) of each metal to the degree of contamination index varied from 2.14 % (for Cu), via 26.33% (for Zn) to quite equally for Cd and Pb, both representing 35.22% and 36.32, respectively. It is worth pointing out that copper was the sole metal to threaten the least (Figure 1) the soils of the investigated ecosystem.

Clinoptilolite is a mineral sorbent extracted in Poland that is used to remove heavy metal ions from diluted solutions. The experiments in this study were carried out in a laboratory column for multicomponent water solutions of heavy metal ions, i.e. Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II). A mathematical model to calculate the metals' concentration of water solution at the column outlet and the concentration of adsorbed substances in the adsorbent was proposed. It enables determination of breakthrough curves for different process conditions and column dimensions. The model of process dynamics in the column took into account the specificity of sorption described by the Elovich equation (for chemical sorption and ion exchange). Identification of the column dynamics consisted in finding model coefficients [beta], KE and Deff and comparing the calculated values with experimental data. Searching for coefficients which identify the column operation can involve the use of optimisation methods to find the area of feasible solutions in order to obtain a global extremum. For that purpose our own procedure of genetic algorithm is applied in the study.

Opis:
The article presents the results of preliminary tests obtained from the analysis of ash coming from the combustion of various types of waste in household furnaces. The aim of this work was to examine the influence of various types of waste burned in household furnaces on the elemental composition of the generated ash. As part of the research, analyses of ash generated from the incineration of mixed waste, plastics, wood, textiles, rubber waste and paper were made. The content of selected metal ions: Mn, Cu, Mo, Zn, Cd, Tl, Cr, Co, Ni, As, Sn, Sb, Pb, V was determined in the tested samples, according to PN-EN ISO 17294-2: 2016-11 standard. The highest concentrations of zinc were found in the large-sized waste, rubber and textile ash samples and highest concentrations of copper were found in the plastic and paper ash samples. The highest concentrations for elements such as copper, lead, cobalt and chromium were recorded for samples of rubber and large-sized waste containing e.g. varnished furniture boards. The obtained results showed that depending on the waste incinerated, the content of selected metals was significantly different, and the highest concentrations were noted for samples of large-sized waste, waste from segregated plastics and waste from rubbers.

In this study, the heavy metal and radioactive properties of Iznik Lake were investigated. Concentration values of the first (Ag, Bi, Mo, Sn, Se, Zn, As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pt and Sb) and second (Na, Mg, K, Ca, P, S, Fe, Al and Mn) group of elements in borehole 1 (BH-1) drilling did not show much variation from the top to the bottom of the drilling. Concentration values of the fi rst group of elements in borehole 2 (BH-2) drill samples decreased at higher levels of drilling. In addition, natural and anthropogenic radionuclides were measured by gamma spectrometry, and the results of environmental natural radioactivity of Iznik Lake and its surroundings were determined. In the measurement results, Ra-226 was found to be below the world average value at all locations. It is assumed that the determination of K-40 values above the average values was due to agricultural activities carried out intensively in the study area. Th-232 values were found to be below the world average value in drilling samples; Cs-137 values were below the background level in all samples. According to these results, the study area does not contain any unnatural radioactivity.

Purpose: Data are available that indicate there is an elaborate elemental constitution of petroleum products, with identified elements contained in the many products being additive (e.g. Ca, Zn and P) as well as wear metals (e.g. Ag, Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb and Sn). In addition, incessant deliberate exposure of engine oil to both human beings and farm animals for therapeutic reason has been reported. Therefore the objective of this study is to evaluate the levels of heavy metals in serum of engine oil-exposed rats. Materials & Methods: Thirty adult female rats were divided equally into 5 groups. The first and second groups were treated with engine oil by oral route (as contaminant of feed) at dosage levels of 0.5 and 1.0 mL/kg body weight respectively. The third and forth groups received the test agent through the dermal route at dosage levels of 0.5 and 1.0 mL/kg body weight while the fifth group served as the control. The duration of the study was 30 days, after which blood was obtained from each rat, centrifuged and the resultant serum used for the analysis of heavy metals by employing Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), p≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: Data obtained showed that there were significant differences in the levels of aluminium, silicon, cadmium, lead, arsenic, vanadium, and nickel. Conclusions: These increases suggest that incessant exposure to engine oil may be dangerous and therefore constitute health hazard.

Assessment of the assimilability of elements contained in sewage sludge can only be carried out if their fractions, by means of which the chemical form of the element can be identified, are determined. The total content of heavy metals only makes it possible to determine whether the sludge meets the legal requirements and can be used, inter alia, for reclamation, in agriculture or for the adaptation of land to specific needs that result from waste management plans. Therefore, when planning the agricultural use of sewage sludge, attention should be paid above all to the heavy metal fractions contained in it. This is due to the fact that plants do not assimilate every form of element to the same extent. The research and analysis carried out indicate that the metals were most closely related to fractions IV and III, for example they formed connections with silicates, as well as sulphides and organic matter. The metal forms available to plants occupied a small percentage of the total heavy metal content. It was noted that with the metastable fraction of lead increased along with population equivalent. Furthermore, the population equivalent value did not affect the distribution of individual heavy metal fractions in the sludge.

Sewage sludge used for reclamation of egraded areas or in agriculture must have a certain total heavy metal content, as required by law. In practice, however, it is important to carry out a fractional analysis of the elements contained in the sludge. This activity allows to determine the chemical form of a given metal, thanks to which it is possible to assess the assimilability of elements by plants. The study proved that the fraction of certain metals in sewage sludge can vary depending on the period studied. The combination of elements with other compounds in sludge from one treatment plant can vary from month to month. Once analysis has been carried out, it should not be the basis for assessing the bioavailability of metals if sludge from a given treatment plant were to be sampled several times a year.

Here, 45 water samples from different sites were collected during the year 2015 at post monsoon, and Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn heavy metal content was analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), The obtained results were then compared with the WHO standard for the specific highest pollution level. Accordingly, some or all water samples are above the permissible limit, particularly for Cd metal (all samples). The elevated concentration of cadmium in water samples of the study area may be due to agricultural runoff, as pesticides and cadmium-containing fertilizer have been used. The study showed that without proper treatment, the groundwater of the study area is not suitable for domestic applications.

A zeolitic adsorbent was synthesized from powdered waste porcelain kept at 80 °C for 24 h. The product contained the zeolite phases Na-P1 and hydroxysodalite. The product with the highest cation exchange capacity (CEC) was synthesized using 4 M NaOH and the sample weight / volume of alkali solution ratio was 1/4. The highest CEC obtained for the product was almost 1900 mmol/kg, which is the same as that of natural zeolite. The product with the highest CEC was tested for its ability to remove heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, Mn, Cr, Al, B, Mo) from an acidic solution (pH 2). The product can neutralize the acidic solution to almost pH 7, and the capacity of the product for the removal of heavy metals is higher than that of the natural zeolite, except for Mo and B.

The cause of the histological damage of Faunus ater (gastropod mollusk) gonad has been identified in the samples from two rivers, namely Bale River and Reuleng River which flow through residential, agricultural and industrial areas. The heavy metal concentration within the tissue of Faunus ater was analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu AA 630). Meanwhile, the histological damage on gonads was observed microscopically. Afterwards, the damage levels obtained from the two respective rivers were compared and analyzed with t-test. The results confirm the histological damage that occurred in the gonads of Faunus ater collected from the two rivers. The gonadal damage of female Faunus ater from both rivers was found not to be significantly different, observed by the number of developed and damaged oocytes. It was also found that the gonads of male Faunus ater collected from Bale Riverl, have higher quantity of spermatogenic cells, in which they experience greater necrosis than the ones from Reuleng River.

This study presents the synthesis of geopolymer materials designed for application as self-supporting zeolite membranes. For this purpose, batches of metakaolin activated with sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide were used. During synthesis, it was assumed that low temperatures are sufficient to receive the membranes. The composition of raw materials and temperature of activation were selected in such a way so as to correspond to the basic chemical compositions and synthesis conditions of sodalite as well as zeolites A and X. Additionally, the structural and textural properties of geopolymers were determined. The results show that it is possible to obtain composite zeolite structures in an amorphous matrix. A number of synthesized materials were used in the sorption of selected heavy metal cations (Ni2+ , Zn2+ , Pb2+  and Cd2+ ). It was concluded that the investigated geopolymerization process may be applied to obtain a material with potential use as a heavy metal sorbent.

Opis:
It is a common characteristic of all life forms that some of the elements present in the environment are accumulated and others are rejected. The rates of accumulation are necessarily governed by physiological requirements rather than toxicity. Because metals like Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo, Ni are essential for normal running a vast number of metabolic processes, plants evoke special systems of metal uptake and transport during evolution. On the other hand, the same metals present in an excess in plant cells may become seriously toxic to the cells. Moreover, the low specificity of the metal uptake and transport systems makes them to function also as an entrance for nonessential and toxic substances (Cd, Pb). The existence of a complex systems for metal uptake and transport processes, able to respond to continuously changing environmental conditions, is necessary for maintaining metal homeostasis in plants. It is highly probable that these complex systems of metal uptake and transport can function as systems of heavy metal tolerance in plants, as well. According to the recent reports, the main processes involved in maintaining heavy metal homeostasis in plants are: metal ions mobilization and uptake from the soil, their short distance transport in roots, complexation by different ligands in cytosol, compartmentation in root cells, xylem loading and long distance transport in xylem, distribution in shoots, xylem unloading, ions trafficking in apoplastic and symplastic passage of leave cells, their chelating in cytosol and compartmentation in leave cells and structures. Although some of these processes are well recognized, a number of them remain still enigmatic. It is strongly believed that further investigation of these processes should help to explain differences in metal tolerance between plant varieties as well as the phenomenon of heavy metal hyperaccumulation in plants.

This research aimed to determine the physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations of agricultural soils used for grape and wheat production in Morocco in the Mohammedia Benslimane area. The organic matter (OM) content ranged from 0.6% to 2.93%. The degree of total nitrogen was higher in the wheat plots than in the vine plots in the Mohammedia and Benslimane regions. Total nitrogen average rates ranged from 0.04 to 0.5% and from 0.07 to 0.8% in the vine and wheat plots. These results imply that the soil was silty clay and clay texture, neutral to slightly acidic at all stations. The P2O5 concentrations were 11.15 ppm and 68.14 ppm under the vine and the wheat plots, respectively, while the potassium concentration ranged from 33.1 to 287.9 ppm and from 26.9 to 184.75 ppm under the vine and the wheat plots, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of Cd at a few stations exceeded the standard value (2 ppm), reaching 10.375 ppm. The Pb and Zn concentrations were higher in vineyard plots than in wheat plots. The Pb and Zn concentrations were 20.22 ppm and 148.60 ppm, respectively. This study reports updated information on the states of eight stations in Mohammedia and Benslimane. However, further research is necessary to determine the pollution factors in local practice crops and naturally growing plants at these stations to assess their impact on livestock and humans.

An electrokinetic remediation technique taking Cr(VI) as an example is proposed to improve the conductivity of contaminated soil, which significantly increases the current density in the soil. The improvement of soil conductivity was achieved by continuous spraying of NaCl solution with a concentration of 4 g·dm–3 on the soil surface. The distances of electrode pairs were 2.0 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The heavy metal-contaminated soil thickness was 25 cm, and the DC power supply voltage was 90 V. The experiment demonstrated that under the condition of continuous spraying of NaCl solution on the soil surface, the current density variation was related to the salt content in the soil, and the current density in the soil generally increased linearly with time. The effectiveness of soil remediation is related to the electric field strength and current density, and there exists an optimal electric field that can reduce the heavy metal content in the soil at any point by minimizing the electric field strength and current density. Most of the heavy metals can be concentrated within a diameter of about 15 cm around the anode under the optimal electric field, which can be remediated after removing the soil.

Human activities such as transport contribute to the environmental degradation. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the level of contamination of soils, from different districts of big cities of central Europe, with heavy metals: zinc, lead, and nickel. The samples were taken from the top, sodded soil layer. Each single sample weigh was about 1 kg taken from 1 m2 measuring station. Soil samples were dried at room temperature. The airborne dry soil was thoroughly mixed and sieved through a 1 mm nylon sieve. The study included analysis of which type of metals is washed out under the influence of abiotic factors (bioavailable forms) and demonstrating how spatial development affects the accumulation of selected heavy metals in the soil. The results indicated that heavy metals emitted to the ground layer of the atmosphere accumulate in the immediate vicinity of communication routes. Moreover, based on the analysis of interrelationships of zinc, lead, and nickel concentrations, it has been shown that there is a common source of their emission to soil. Furthermore, the thesis that the concentration of metals was dependent on the soil reaction was not confirmed.

Opis:
The short-term effect of aided phytostabilization of heavy metalcontaminated soil on microorganisms under outdoor field conditions was tested. Heavy metal contaminated soil from a mining site was amended with lignite, lime and two commercial fertilizers and vegetated with grass Festuca arundinacea. Results demonstrated that the amended phytostabilization approach of Pb-Cd contaminated soil gave a positive change on the native microbial populations evaluated by culturable techniques during the first 28 weeks of the experimental period. In the end of the experiment, the number of bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi increased in treated soil about 16-fold, 10-fold and 2-fold, respectively. Changes in the biodiversity of bacterial populations were evaluated by the Ecophysiological Index (EP) and the Colony Development Index (CD) for oligotrophs and copiotrophs. During the experimental period slower growing microorganisms (K-strategists) predominated. The application of amendments to the soil led to an increase of the CD index in both copiotroph and oligotroph populations after 28 weeks. EP, CD, bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi increased in the treated soil. Traditional microbiological methods based on culture techniques can be used to evaluate the biological quality of the phytostabilized heavy metal-contaminated soil.

The article tries to combine Charles Taylor’s theory of the “profundity” of the modern self from his book Sources of the self: The making of modern identity with Stanisław Przybyszewski’s postulates, presented in his article “For the new art” (mare tenebrarum, the kinship theory). The author, referring to Taylor’s and Przybyszewski’s ideas, analyses a literary text (“Krzyk” by Przybyszewski) and the lyrics (Zwierzenia kontestatora and Heavy Metal Świat by TSA), in order to present the searching for (Taylor), as well as such forms of expression which could be equivalent to the processes happening in the profundity, i.e. in that part of the soul which is inaccessible for human senses, and its indications may be noticed only by an individual/artist/ genius. During the analysis process, the author points to the diary forms of Przybyszewski (Moi współcześni), in which the writer has a premonition that the “fatherland sounds” are a kind of ancient tune, an atavistic roar coming from the depth. The question remains: how to illustrate this part of the soul through art? Is Chopin’s music the only chance? It does not seem to be, but Przybyszewski can’t have realised that. It was only a few decades after his death that the music of scream and atavistic reactions appeared. This music of a screaming soul most willingly penetrates what is hidden inside, i.e. commonly misunderstood behaviours, in some circles considered to be immoral and unethical.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the removal of heavy metal ions (Ni, Pb, Zn) from aqueous solutions by natural adsorbents (zeolite, bentonite, clay) were investigated in a lab-scale batch study. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, temperature, and agitation time were studied to optimise the conditions. Under those optimized conditions (180 rpm agitation rate, 120 min agitation time, pH 4.0, 298 K, 100 mg/dm3 initial adsorbate concentration), the removal percentages of heavy metal ions for natural adsorbents have been determined. The adsorption mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the process were analyzed by two and three parameter isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Toth and Sips), and kinetic models (Lagergren's pseudo-first order, Ho and McKay's pseudo-second order). Adsorption thermodynamics of heavy metal ions (changes of standard enthalpy, entropy and free energy) on zeolite, bentonite and clay were also studied at 298,318 and 338 K.

Opis:
In the study suitability of water quality index approach and environmetric methods in fi ngerprinting heavy metal pollution as well as comparison of spatial variability of multiple contaminants in surface water were assessed in the case of The Gediz River Basin, Turkey. Water quality variables were categorized into two classes using factor and cluster analysis. Furthermore, soil contamination index was adapted to water pollution index and used to fi nd out the relative relationship between the reference standards and the current situation of heavy metal contamination in water. Results revealed that surface water heavy metal content was mainly governed by metal processing, textile and tannery industries in the region. On the other hand, metal processing industry discharges mainly degraded quality of water in Kemalpasa and Menemen. Furthermore, Kemalpasa region has been heavily affected from tannery and textile industries effl uents. Moreover, pollution parameters have not been infl uenced by changes in physical factors (discharge and temperature). This study indicated the effectiveness of water quality index approach and statistical tools in fi ngerprinting of pollution and comparative assessment of water quality. Both methods can assist decision makers to determine priorities in management practices.

Thirty two active stream sediment samples were collected, panned and sieved from a 16km (500m spacing) section along Ndongo River, Buea. Sixteen of them were subjected to magnetic separation for the determination of heavy minerals under a microscope (KARL ZEISS IENA) and analyzed by XRF and AAS for As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sn, Sr V, Zn, and Zr. The average element concentrations are 0.014, 64.45, 76.93, 94.52, 87.65, 147.79, 0.00, 77.00, 98.99, 40.37, 7.99, 24.70, 52.42, 1053.37, 285.46, 579.70 and 404.41ppm respectively. As (0.014 ppm) and Mo (0.001 ppm) are below l average concentrations in basalts while dispersed Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sc, Sn, V, Zn values are mostly above tolerance limit in settlement areas and farmlands. Olivine with angular grains (1.5mm) and sub-hedral shape representing 10 vol. % is light green colored. Together with pyroxene (elongated, black colored with angular grains up to 0.7mm) are the most abundant minerals. Minor rutile with shiny luster is also present. R-mode factor analysis reveals Ni-Rb-V, Co–Cr–Pb–Zn, and Cu–Sr-Zr associations representing three geochemical entities related to agricultural (fertilizers) and settlement (domestic waste) areas. Correlation coefficients (r) vary from -0.84 (V, Sb) to 0.728 (Ni, Rb) and may indicate different sources of metal contamination. The calculated PLI (3.10 to 4.92) and Igeo (-7.37 to 9.18) of As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, indicate metal pollution of River Ndongo sediments. The obtained classification is defined as low (As, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Sc, and V), partially (Co, Zn), moderately (Pb, Be) and highly to very highly (Sb, Sr, Cd) polluted. Natural and anthropogenic metal input assessment reveals that the dominantly basaltic lithologies in the area (pyroxene and olivine), the domestic and agricultural activities as well as urbanization processes of Buea are the main source of metal contamination.

Opis:
Intraspecific changes in genome size and chromosome number lead to divergence and species evolution. Heavy metals disturb the cell cycle and cause mutations. Areas contaminated by heavy metals (metalliferous sites) are places where microevolutionary processes accelerate; very often only a few generations are enough for a new genotype to arise. This study, which continues our long-term research on Viola tricolor (Violaceae), a species occurring on both metalliferous (Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu) and non-metalliferous soils in Western and Central Europe, is aimed at determining the influence of environments polluted with heavy metals on genome size and karyological variability. The genome size of V. tricolor ranged from 3.801 to 4.203 pg, but the differences between metallicolous and non-metallicolous populations were not statistically significant. Altered chromosome numbers were significantly more frequent in material from the polluted sites than from the non-polluted sites (43% versus 28%). Besides the standard chromosome number (2n = 26), aneuploid cells with lower (2n = 18–25) or higher (2n = 27, 28) chromosome numbers were found in plants from both types of site, but polyploid (2n = 42) cells were observed only in plants from the metalliferous locality. The lack of correlation between chromosome variability in root meristematic cells and genome size estimated from peduncle cells can be attributed to elimination of somatic mutations in generative meristem, producing chromosome-stable non-meristematic tissues in the peduncle.

Railway transport is a source of various heavy metals arising from abraded metallic train elements and rails. These metals accumulate in neighboring soils and may pose particular health risk for railway workers or people who simply pass through the railroad tracks. Plants are able to uptake metals from soil, thus reduce soil contamination and movement of pollutants. Individual species are characterized by different accumulation efficiency. In this study fifteen species were examined for accumulation of 14 metals. Cerastium dubium accumulated the majority of metals most efficiently.

Opis:
Pomace from apples, grapes, blackcurrants, and oranges is a waste product of fruit processing, which is formed during the production of juices. Pomace is a rich source of biologically active compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, or vitamins. They also contain pectin, cellulose, lignin, proteins, and minerals. All these components, apart from having many beneficial properties for human health, also show sorption properties towards heavy metal ions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the possibility of removing lead (II) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solutions by adding apple, grape, black currant, and orange pomace as well as to determine the adsorption efficiency of selected heavy metals. The studies were carried out in model systems. The results of the research showed that lead (II) and cadmium (II) ions are adsorbed on fruit pomace. The highest removal of cadmium (II) ions was observed in orange pomace and of lead (II) ions in apple pomace. The maximum tested cadmium ions absorption capacity was: 0.117235 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried apple pomace; 0.08618 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried currant pomace; 0.21915 m/g in the case of freeze-dried grape pomace and 0.29549 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried orange pomace. On the other hand, the maximum absorption of lead ions was: 0.457 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried apple pomace; 0.442 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried currant pomace; 0.3445 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried grape pomace and 0.421 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried orange pomace. On the basis of the performed measurements, it can be concluded that the tested waste can potentially be used as a cheap biosorbent for removing heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solutions.

Physalis peruviana is one of the most promising tropical fruit plants because of its rapid growth, high yield, and nutritional quality. Th is study was designed to investigate plant development under heavy metal contamination (Cd, Pb) and responsiveness to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization by Rhizophagus clarum and Claroideoglomus claroideum. Th e antioxidant capacity, total lipid content and fatty acid profi le in fruits, accumulation of Cd and Pb in diff erent plant parts, plant dry biomass, and mycorrhizal colonization were determined. As a result of inoculation, a considerable reduction in Cd and Pb in the fruits was observed, compared with non-inoculated plants. Th e fruit number and dry weight increased in plants associated with C. claroideum. Th ese plants also showed higher acid phosphatase activity, root protein accumulation and glomalin production. Th e type of antioxidant defense was AMF strain-dependent. Antioxidant activity and H2O2 neutralization were enzymatic rather than non-enzymatic processes in the fruits of C. claroideum plants compared with those forming an association with R. clarum. Mycorrhizal establishment changed the composition and concentration of fruits’ fatty acids. Th e ratio of unsaturated fatty acids was increased. With respect to the accumulation of bioactive compounds in golden berry the present fi ndings are important for obtaining the optimum benefi ts of mycorrhizal association under unfavorable conditions.

Opis:
In the paper a potential application of potato tubers for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was investigated. Sorption of Cu2+, Fe5+ and Pb2+ was studied for different salts in order to determine the influence of counter anions on the cation uptake by the investigated adsorbents. Potatoes in the form of raw and dried potato cubes and the peels were soaked in 5 % aqueous solution of the following salts: copper(II) acetate, chloride and sulfate, iron(III) chloride and nitrate(V) and lead(II) acetate and nitrate(V). After sample wet mineralization with HNO3 and HClO4, the total metal content was determined by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The inner structure of the applied sorbents was determined by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sorption was found to be dependent on both the cation and the anion present in the solution. Acetate ions significantly enhanced the metal uptake from the solution. In all studied samples the uptake of Pb2+ was most effective in comparison with that for the other cations. Among the sorbents, the potato peels have taken higher, than it was obtained for the others, amount of metals, and the raw potato cubes were more effective compared with the dried ones. The metal uptake was positively correlated to the moisture and protein content as well as the amount of Ca2+ and K+ ions in the initial samples. It was also related to the inner structure of used potato materials. The obtained results should be useful in the recovery of the heavy metals from the environmental samples.

Opis:
The heavy metal contamination has become a serious problem in the aquatic environment, including marine sediments. This study was aimed at analyzing the content of heavy metals in marine sediments, then assessing and evaluating the level of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risks. The sediment samples were taken using a grab sampler at six sites in the coastal waters of Mimika Regency, Indonesia. The TCLP testing method was used to determine the content of heavy metals in marine sediments. The results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg in marine sediments ranged from <0.25 to 0.59 ppm, <0.02 to 0.54 ppm, <0.005 to 0.03 ppm, and < 0.0007 ppm. Only the concentrations of Cu on the Meoga and Puriri sites exceeded the quality standard in the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 18 year 1999. The results of the assessment of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risk potential indicate that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are included in the category of low contamination and low ecological risks. The concentration of heavy metals in this study shows that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are not contaminated by Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg heavy metals.

The aim of the study was to assess the contamination of selected heavy metals in cultivated soils of the Odra river floodplain. The heavy metals Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb were determined in soil samples collected in the autumn of 2020 - after the vegetation period of plants from designated measurement points. Concentrations of the analytes were measured using an atomic absorption spectrometer (F-ASA). A comparison was made between concentrations of heavy metals in soil samples collected from areas flooded in 1997 and from areas flooded as a result of rainfall, snowmelt and winter floods. The results of the studies were compared with the data for soils taken from non-flooded areas. The studies confirmed enrichment of soils subjected to precipitation, snowmelt and winter floods in heavy metals. Also samples taken from two measurement points located on floodplains of the Odra river were characterised by high concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb.

The paper attempts to determine the degree of impact of discharged wastewater from five treatment plants on the Bug River ecosystem and its inflow, the Kamianka. For laboratory tests, samples of bottom sediments and aquatic plants were collected in 2014. The content of heavy metals: Zn, Pb, Ni in bottom sediments and aquatic plants (root, stem, leaf) growing close to the discharge of purified sewage, were analyzed. The amount of metals in the samples was determined applying the AAS method in its flame version. The average content of the metals determined in bottom sediments from the study points located before the treatment plant were Zn – 21.8; Pb – 11.5; Ni – 13.7 mg kg−1. However, the content of these metals was higher in samples from the collection points which were located after the place of purified sewage discharge and amounted to: Zn – 34.3; Pb – 12.2; Ni – 16.9 mg⋅kg−1. The test plants were Acorus calamus L., Nuphar lutea L., Typha angustifolia L. The content of metals in the individual parts of macrophytes (root, stem, leaf) was as follows: Zn > Pb > Ni. In the bottom sediments and aquatic plants of the Bug and Kamianka rivers, a higher content of lead, zinc and nickel was found after the discharge of treated sewage in relation to their content than before discharge, but it was not a threat to the aquatic environment of the watercourses studied. Statistical analysis showed that the amount of sewage discharged to the tested receivers influenced the content of organic matter, zinc and nickel in bottom sediments.

Heavy metals like cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are pollutants that are toxic, difficult to decompose and accumulate in biota. One of the biota that lives in the waters is mullet fish. This fish is demersal, has a relatively long life period, has a specific tolerance to the aquatic environment and highly consumable in Indonesia. Therefore need to know the metal content of Cd and Pb in water, sediments and mullet fish and their relationship in Indonesia. The study used a survey method with purposive random sampling at four stations, three replications. The study was conducted from June to November 2019. Analysis of data was descriptive, F-test and correlation. The results showed that the heavy metal content of Cd and Pb between stations in the water media, sediment and in mullet fish there was a significant difference. The highest Cd and Pb were showed in station III, coming from the oil industry, domestic waste and transportation activities. The heavy metal content of Cd and Pb in water, sediment and mullet fish (Planiliza subviridis) in the Donan River, Cilacap shows results exceeding the allowed threshold and danger to human health.

We reconstruct palaeoenvironmental changes since the Late Holocene in the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin, with an emphasis on anthropogenic influence (Walker et al., 2018). This reconstruction employs multiproxy analyses of the Otrębowskie Brzegi poor fen. We combined radiocarbon and 210Pb dating with elemental geochemistry, stable lead isotopes, and palaeobotanical analyses. The core we investigated covers a period from 4200 ± 100 BC to the present, with a peat accumulation rate varying between 0.001 and 0.243 cm y-1. Heavy metal concentrations, Pb isotopic ratios, and a palynological analysis revealed a significant impact of human activities in the past. The highest concentration and accumulation rate of Pb, were found around 1950 AD. The 206Pb/207Pb quotient ranged between 1.168 and 1.223, with average value around 1.198. Most of the interpretation was based on Pb and its stable isotopes; however, other elements were also important indicators of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes. Our results revealed similarities between the geochemical composition of the peatland studied and other peatlands from the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin.

Root vegetables have greater risk of metal contamination from compost application to soil than other horticultural crops. Moreover, soil organic amendments pose potential environmental hazards. The objective of the present study was to examine the heavy metal uptake in different tissues (petiole, blade, skin, pulp) of Raphanus sativus exposed to organic amendments doses. The impact of the above materials on heavy metal concentration of the soil and plant development parameters were also evaluated. A pot experiment was established with eight treatments arranged in a randomized complete block design and four replicates. Co-compost of sewage sludge and olive wastes at 100, 200, 300 m3 ha–1, composted olive leaves, olive tree pruning wastes, olive mill pomace and poultry manure at 100, 200 m3 ha–1, commercial liquid organic fertilizer at 50 Kg ha–1 with or without inorganic NPK fertilization and a no fertilizing control, were applied to plants. The results showed that sewage sludge application strongly increased the yield and improved radish size cultivated in silt loam soil. The edible radish part had the lowest Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Cr content, whereas the highest Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr was found in the blade and increased Fe, Ni, Pb were recorded in the skin. Organic treatments gave higher Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn amount in both aerial plant tissues compared to the control soil, while Ni, Pb, Cr of all the radish parts were not affected by treatments. This study suggested that organic amendments application gave low permissible levels of all metal content in radish tissues and increased radish productivity. Therefore, organic materials used herein can be applied for normal plant growth without metal contamination of the plant and the soil.

Studies on the possibilities of activating heavy metal ions by platinum ions in the soil have been undertaken. The present work gives results of research on the copper ions activated in loessial soil by the treatment with solutions containing platinum ions. Samples of podzolic soil developed from loess were collected from the horizon Ap (0-20 cm). The samples were treated with re-distilled water or with the same quantity of PtCl4 water solutions containing 2, 4, 20 mg of platinum ions. Soil reaction (pH) was measured after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months of incubation at 5 and 20 °C temperature. Copper ion content was determined in the filtrates using the technique of atomic absorption spectrometry. The amount of copper ions activated in the soil material depended on the soil reaction, temperature, quantity of platinum ions introduced and the time duration of the experiment.

The study was carried out to ascertain seasonal variation in heavy metal distribution in sediments from Dams located in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Sediment samples were collected twice each at two different seasons for two years from May to September, 2014 and November-December, 2014 to March, 2015 for wet and dry seasons, respectively. Similarly, sediment samples were collected from May to September, 2015 and November-December, 2015 to March, 2016 for wet and dry seasons, respectively. The samples were then assessed for heavy metal properties, using atomic absorption spectrophotography (AAS). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was then applied. The mean results of the heavy metal levels showed high values in dry seasons and low values in wet seasons in the two years of the study. Herein, the results of ANOVA revealed significant difference in the heavy metal concentrations between the seasons, dams and years. Our study also indicated that for heavy metals, the levels determined in sediments were within the WHO acceptable standards, except for Pb and Mn. These exceeded the WHO acceptable standards for drinking water. Based on these results, the dam waters are, therefore, polluted and unsuitable for human consumption, except after treatment.

Opis:
The main purpose of this work was to determine the degree of negative impact of heavy metals accumulated in the water sediments to aquatic organisms. Samples of sediments were collected in winter 2013, from 4 layers of sediment (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) at three points along the water reservoir. Sediments were prepared for analysis in accordance with the procedures applied in soil science. The analysis was carried out for the fraction with a particle diameter less than 1 mm. The total content of such elements as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (using the Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 series spectrometer) after digestion in a mixture (5:1) of concentrated acid HNO3 (65 %) and HClO4 (60%). The total Hg content was obtained by using the AMA 254 analyzer. Only the lead content in the analyzed samples of bottom sediments exceeded the contamination value given by polish law (the Regulation of the Minister of Environment). According to the classification of PGI samples of sediments are classified mainly as medium polluted sediments (Class II), with the exception of zinc and lead concentrations (Class III). Due to the value of the indicator of sediments ecological risk (Er) for cadmium, the examined sediments from small water reservoirs no. 1 and 2 should be classified as deposits with a higher rate of environmental contamination risk. The sediments from small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 belong to the class of a much higher index of contamination risk. On the basis of the PER indicator (a degree of potential envi ronmental risk) the sediments from small water reservoirs located within the area of organic farming can be classified as contaminated by heavy metals to a moderate degree. On the other hand, the analyzed sediments of small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 were classified as deposits with a severe degree of heavy metal contamination. On the basis of the LAW classification one can say that the bottom sediments of examined ponds were classified into different classes depending on the analyzed chemical element.

Ruditapes decussatus and Venerupis pullastra are commercially fished clams with a wide distribution in the shallow inshore waters of Lake Timsah, Egypt. They are usually contaminated with heavy metals. Consumption of such contaminated clams can pose a public health risk. To minimize this risk, therefore, the clams should be removed from the contaminated waters and transferred to an approved area to reduce the high levels of metals before being marketed. The aim of this work was to study the effect of transplantation on levels of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu,Ni, Co,Cd,Pb) in these clams. The clams were removed from their polluted site and transplanted to a relatively clean area for a period of 120 days. Although the salinity at the transplantation site was higher than at the polluted site, it was stable and did not appear to have any adverse effect on clam growth. Heavy metals were analysed in the water, sediment and clam tissues from both the polluted and the transplantation sites. Although in both species transplantation evidently reduced heavy metal levels, these still exceeded the maximum permissible levels laid down by the WHO (1982).

Opis:
The main threats to human health from heavy metals are associated with exposure to lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. These metals have been extensively studied and their effects on human health regularly reviewed by international bodies such as the WHO. Heavy metals have been used by humans for thousands of years. Although several adverse health effects of heavy metals have been known for a long time, exposure to heavy metals continues, and is even increasing in some parts of the world, in particular, in less developed countries. However, over the last 100 years, emissions have declined in most developed countries. Cadmium compounds, the exception, are currently mainly used in re-chargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Cadmium emissions have increased dramatically during the 20th century, one reason being that cadmium-containing products are rarely re-cycled, but often dumped together with household waste. Cigarette smoking is a major source of cadmium exposure. In non-smokers, food is the most important source of cadmium exposure. Recent data indicate that adverse health effects of cadmium exposure may occur at lower exposure levels than previously anticipated, primarily in the form of kidney damage, but possibly also in bone effects and fractures. Many individuals in Europe already exceed the recommended exposure levels and the margin is very narrow for large groups. Therefore, measures should be taken to reduce cadmium exposure in the general population in order to minimize the risk of adverse health effects. The general population is primarily exposed to mercury via food, fish being a major source of methyl mercury exposure, as is dental amalgam. The general population, however, does not face a significant health risk from methyl mercury, although certain groups with high fish consumption may attain blood levels associated with a low risk of neurological damage to adults. Since there is a risk to the fetus in particular, pregnant women should avoid a high intake of certain fish, such as shark, swordfish and tuna; fish (such as pike, walleye and bass) taken from polluted fresh waters should especially be avoided. There has been a debate on the safety of dental amalgams and claims have been made that mercury from amalgam may cause a variety of diseases. However, there are no studies so far that have been able to show any associations between amalgam fillings and ill health. The general population is exposed to lead from air and food in roughly equal proportions. During the last century, lead emissions to ambient air caused considerable pollution, mainly due to lead emissions from petrol. Children are particularly susceptible to lead exposure due to high gastrointestinal uptake and the permeable blood-brain barrier. Blood levels in children should be reduced below the levels so far considered acceptable as recent data indicates that lead may hold neurotoxic effects at lower levels of exposure than previously anticipated. Although lead in petrol has dramatically decreased over the last decades, thereby reducing environmental exposure, phasing out any remaining uses of lead additives in motor fuels should be encouraged. The use of lead-based paints should also be abandoned, and lead should not be used in food containers. In particular, the public should be aware of glazed food containers, which may leach lead into food. Exposure to arsenic is mainly via intake of food and drinking water, food being the most important source in most populations. Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water is mainly related to increased risks of skin cancer, but also enhanced risk of some other cancers, as well as other skin lesions such as hyperkeratosis and pigmentation changes. Occupational exposure to arsenic, primarily by inhalation, is causally associated with lung cancer. Clear exposure-response relationships and high risks have been observed.

Opis:
Sewage sludge happens to contain heavy metal compounds, including toxic mercury, considerable concentrations of which indicate appearance of new anthropogenic sources of those elements [1, 3, 4, 11]. The sewage sludge is frequently used, due to fertilising components content, in production of compost and the manufactured product (organic fertiliser) is used for soil fertilisation [5, 6]. In the event of excessive concentration of toxic, and even carcinogenic compounds of those metals in natural environment they cause its irreversible pollution. The sludge can also be incinerated, due to considerable presence of organic substance, and such generated waste (slag, ash) is often used in agriculture or applied in production of building materials - then it becomes a valuable raw material [7, 15, 19]. Reclamation of sewage sludge both through composting as well as incineration requires their preliminary treatment. Sewage sludge requires dehydration or drying before it arrives at the compost facility or incineration plant. Therefore, the manufactured product makes a concentrate in which concentration of the heavy metals can be many times (even tenfold) higher than in the sludge subjected to this process [8]. In this study an attempt was made to assess the ways of migration of heavy metals contained in municipal sewage and in sewage sludge generated in one of the seaside wastewater treatment plants. It is suspected that the sewage contains some amount of mercury compounds originating from various sources, including laundry sewage. The research work performed has indicated that following sewage thickening and then dehydration in presses the concentration of those elements in sewage sludge increases causing, consequently, increase of heavy metals concentration from low level in raw sewage up to a considerable level in sewage sludge [13, 14]. Also an assumption can be made that the metals are partly bound with the solid phase contained in tested sewage, therefore, they will occur in the thickened and then dehydrated sewage sludge. It's clear that some amount of those metals remains in the liquid phase after dehydration and depending on the applied wastewater treatment process, it is recycled or discharged to receiving water [16].

Wzrost ten dotyczy: Cu o 106%, Cr o 282%, Ni o 249%, Zn o 150% i Hg o 28%.

Carabid beetles are frequently used as the environment condition indicators. Main purpose of this study was to test if community structure parameters of carabids indicate the stress intensity of heavy metal contamination in the soil of temperate forests. Three geographic regions in Europe differing in both degree of accumulation of heavy metals and its quality were chosen. In Olkusz (southern Poland) the main stressor was zinc, in Głogów (western Poland) – copper and in Clydach (Wales, UK) – nickel. We found strong division between assemblages from contaminated and reference sites (fig. 2). Indicator species from pollution preferring areas in one region can avoid polluted sites in the other region (tab. 2). Species preferring contaminated soils were significantly smaller than those that avoid such ecosystems (F=5.46, p<0.05). Generalized linear model indicated that species richness and biomass decreased in each stressor gradient of contaminated forests. Mean individual biomass and mean abundance of assemblages were significantly lower along zinc gradient only. Species with broader ecological range replace habitat specialists as a response to resource unpredictability. Decreased species richness and biomass in polluted forests indicate degradation of habitat resources and forest ecosystem functioning.

Opis:
Fluvial sediments accumulated in the bottoms of river valleys downstream from large cities are characterised by higher levels of heavy metal content, which poses a threat to the environment and humans. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the degree of pollution of four alluvial sediment profiles (80 samples), collected from the bottom of the Bystrzyca river valley downstream from Lublin, conducted with the use of five geochemical indices. Channel deposits and sediments (alluvial soils) sampled from the floodplain were analysed. The content levels of the six heavy metals under study were as follows: Cd: 10.6–291.2 mg/kg, Cr: 53.1–292.4 mg/kg, Cu: 20.4–223.1 mg/kg, Ni: 2.9–19.3, Pb: 39.3–280.3, Zn: 108.9–991.4 mg/kg. The horizontal and vertical variation of the pollution level was linked with the history of anthropogenic pressure on the one hand, and the geomorphological location of a given profile on the other. Heavy metal content in the samples did not show any correlation with grain size composition, organic matter content, and Fe and Mn content. Cadmium was the element whose concentration levels were comparable with those in alluvial sediments of rivers in industrialised areas while the indices for the other metals showed varied levels of pollution: from low to high. However, the ecological risk is high for all samples as indicated by the synthetic potential ecological risk index, which takes into account the toxicity of all the metals under study.

Heavy metals are some of the environmental pollutants that have a serious impact on the environment. The analysis of hydromacrophytes growing in small rivers of the south of Kazakhstan with different contents of heavy metal salts revealed that the morphometric indicators of the same plant species differ significantly, depending on the level of total mineralization of the aquatic environment in different rivers of the Turkestan region. It has been established that two plant species can be used to bioindicate the content of lead ions in the aquatic environment: Azolla caroliniana Willd. and Veronica beccabunga L., which must be introduced into the tested aqueous solutions in the amount of 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.5–2.0 kg/m3, respectively, to fully cover the water column at different depths. The first morphological changes in plants, in the form of destruction of the structure of chloroplasts along the edges of unfolded leaves in A. caroliniana Willd. and slight withering of the lower underwater leaves in V. beccabunga L., occur already at a 1.5 mg/l Pb2+ content in water, and a further increase in the content of lead ions in water to 600.0–800.0 mg/l leads to the death of plants.

Opis:
Heavy metal pollutants in the leachate of waste landfill are a potential threat to the environment. In this study, the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as barrier material for the containment of heavy metal pollutants from solid waste landfills was evaluated by compaction test and hydraulic conductivity test concerning compaction property, impermeability and heavy metal retardation. Results of the compaction test showed that the maximum dry density of 0.79 g·cm−3 was achieved at the optimum water content of about 60%. The hydraulic conductivities of compacted sewage sludge permeated with synthetic heavy metal solutions were in the range of 1.3×10−8 – 6.2×10−9 cm·s−1, less than 1.0 ×10−−7cm·s−1 recommended by regulations for barrier materials. Chemical analyses on the effluent from the hydraulic conductivity tests indicated that the two target heavy metals, Zn and Cd in the permeants were all retarded by compacted sewage sludge, which might be attributed to the precipitation and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The results of this study suggest that specially prepared material from sewage sludge could be used as a barrier for waste landfills for its low permeability and strong retardation to heavy metal pollutants.

Opis:
The content of heavy metals in soil should be continuously monitored, especially in organic crops. Exceeding the permissible concentrations of these elements may lead not only to inhibition of plant growth but also to ingestion into the organisms of animals that feed on these plants. Heavy metals usually enter the soil via precipitation or manure. There is a noticeable increase in interest in digestate for fields fertilization. Therefore, the authors decided to test the heavy metal content in substrates (slurry and solid input) and digestate. The 15x3 samples tested showed that only trace amounts of heavy metals were present. The study shows that the content of these elements in the digestate is not the sum of the elements supplied to the digester with the substrates. In most of the samples tested, lead concentrations did not exceed 5 mg‧kg-1. The lowest amounts of cadmium (an average of 0.28 mg‧kg-1) were observed in the slurry, and the highest (an average of 0.34 mg‧kg-1) in the solid substrate fed to the digester. Slurry had the lowest mercury and cadmium contents (average 0.012 mg‧kg-1 and 5.8 mg‧kg-1). The highest concentration of chromium was registered in the digestate (average 3 mg‧kg-1) and this was on average 0.3 mg‧kg-1 higher than the feedstock and 0.5 mg‧kg-1 than the slurry.
Najmniejszą ilość kadmu (średnio 0,28 mg‧kg-1) zaobserwowano w gnojowicy a najwyższe (średnio 0,34 mg‧kg-1) w stałym substracie zasilającym fermentor. Gnojowica miała najniższe stężenie rtęci i kadmu (średnio 0,012 mg‧kg-1 oraz 5,8 mg‧kg-1). Najwyższe stężenie chromu zostało zanotowanie w fermentorze (średnio 3 mg‧kg-1) czyli średnio 0,3 mg‧kg-1 wyższe niż surowiec oraz 0,5 mg‧kg-1 niż gnojowica.

Five heavy metals (Pb,Ni,Zn,Cu,Cd) were investigated for efficiency of removal from model solutions, using mineral-carbon adsorbents. For the purpose of comparision, use was also made of a non-modified activated carbon,Norit, which is widely applied to watertreatment.Experiments were run with mineral-carbon adsorbents(both powdered and granural) which had been prepered by thermal carbonization of the organic substances contained in natural aluminiosilicates. The experiments also involved a granular mineral-carbon adsorbent, the composition of which had been modified so as to increase chemisorption and fixation of metal cations in the mass and on the surface of the grain. The modified adsorbent was found to be most efficient in removing the investigated heavy metals from the agueous solutions.Activated carbon (Norit)showed wery poor adsorbing capacity for hesvy metals. Thus, the efficiency of adsorption(R) for the Pb cation (which showed the highest removal in this study) was only 17.9% at a carbon dose of 30g/dm3 and a Pb concentration of 100 g/m3.

This study aimed to analyze the heavy metal contamination in sediments and their potential ecological risks. The sediment samples were collected using PVC pipes and grab samplers at nine study sites in Youtefa Bay, namely five sites in the mangrove ecosystem, two sites in the estuary, and two sites in the middle of the bay. The heavy metal content was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The results of the analysis of the heavy metal content in the sediment were in the following order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd > As > Hg (106.077±98.857, 28.553±30.505, 19.798±11.541, 17.665±11.457, 12.103±0.124, 2.996±1.235, 0.149±0.124, and 0.082±0.047 mg kg-1, respectively). Only the Cd content has exceeded the Threshold Effect Level (TEL) at all study sites. On the other hand, the As and Cr content has not exceeded TEL at any study site. The content of Hg, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Ni has exceeded TEL only at a few study sites. The heavy metal content in estuary sites is higher than in mid-bay and mangrove sites, which can provide the information on the sources of heavy metal contaminants. There is a significant correlation for the content of Cu, As, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ni which can indicate that the sources of these heavy metals are relatively the same (r = 0.569 to r = 0.950). The CF and Igeo values indicate that there has been contamination of several heavy metals studied. Further analysis ( ERI ) showed that the heavy metal content in the sediments poses a potentially serious ecological risk. Most of the potential ecological risks are the contribution of Cd and Hg which have high toxicity factors and this should receive special attention from local governments and stakeholders to prevent higher contamination.

This paper presents the results of the heavy metals accumulation (Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) in soils and plants (Typha angustifolia L., Urtica dioica L., Ranunculus sardous Crantz and Rumex Crispus L.) collected along the banks of the Sitnica River, which flows through various cities of Kosovo and is quite stressed due to the discharges of urban, industrial, and agricultural pollutants. The aim of this research was to verify the accumulation of heavy metals in water, soil and plants, since vegetables that used as food are cultivated in the vicinity of sample collection. The analyses were conducted with applied methodology in the analytic laboratory of Kosovo Agriculture Institute by using MP-AES 4200 for Cd and Cr, ASS-Scientific for Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb in plant samples, whereas 4100 MP-AES was used for determination of metals in soil. The results show variations in different metal values found in the samples of the analyzed soils and plants. The lowest values accumulation of the metals analyzed were recorded at A1 (Devetak Station) near the river source and did not contain anthropogenic influences, whereas the highest values were recorded at A3 (Kuzmin Station), which belongs to the middle flow of the Sitnica River that is polluted by wastewater (urban) discharges.

Thirty-five near-surface sediment samples were recovered from the continental shelf and upper slope regions of the north-western (NW) Gulf of Mexico. The geochemical data of the sediments recovered were examined to investigate the weathering intensity, provenance, palaeo-oxygenation condition, and level of heavy metal contamination. The sediments analysed showed a moderate to high intensity of chemical weathering. Major and trace element concentrations indicated a terrigenous origin, closely related to the weathering of rocks rich in aluminosilicates. The results of this study further revealed that major rivers, the Bravo and Soto La Marina, played an important role in delivering sediments to the study area. The concentration of transition trace elements such as Cr, Cu, Ni, and V revealed that the sediments were derived from intermediate rocks such as andesite. The V/Cr, Ni/Co, and Cu/Zn ratios in the sediments were <2, <5, and <1, respectively, suggesting a depositional process occurred under well-oxygenated conditions. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) did not show a significant difference in sediment texture between the continental shelf and slope areas. The enrichment factor (EF) and Geo-accumulation index (lgeo) values were <2 and <1, respectively, suggesting the absence of an anthropogenic input.

Influence of some selected heavy metals applied into soil as water salt solutions (2 mg Cd, 30 mg Cu, 15 mg Ni, 80 mg Pb and 70 mg Zn/kg soil d.m.) on the growth and development of broad beans and on occurrence of harmful and beneficial insects on the plant was investigated in field conditions. The applied doses of soil contamination with heavy metals strongly affected broad beans development. Plants were characterised by a significantly lower number and length of shoots and a lesser number of pods per plant as compared to the control. Chemical analysis of individual parts of plant revealed big differences in heavy metal contents in roots of plants in contaminated soil as compared to control soil with natural contents of metal ions. In the above ground parts, i.e. leaves and shoots the differences were considerably smaller. Numbers of beetroot aphids were determined on the selected plants since its appearance to the end of its development. Simultaneously, occupation of aphid colony by predators: ladybirds, Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae was also assessed. The number of plants occupied by aphids at each plot was also estimated. Aphids on plants in soil with increased metal contents formed more numerous colonies, also the insects invaded a bigger number of plants. Ladybird larvae, predators for aphids, occurred in more numerous colonies on plants in contaminated soil. The numbers of other aphid predators: Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae did not reveal statistically significant differences.

The aspects of complex technology of sewage purification and utilization of purification sludge were investigated in the article. The authors substantiated the possibility of purifying sewage from heavy-metal ions by means of zeolite and utilizing sewage sludge in bricks production. The adsorption capacity of the zeolite from Sokyrnytsia deposit was studied for cupric and manganese ions in relation to its fractional composition. The comparative effectiveness studies of heavy metals adsorption by natural zeolite and anthracite were carried out. The optimal sorption parameters of these ions were selected based on the investigation results of their adsorption dynamics in the Cu2+ and Mn2+ solutions. The prospects of sewage sludge utilization by means of its thermal pyrolysis at the temperatures of 600-700°С were studied. The modifying additive was obtained, which can be added to the ceramic mixture and increase the porosity, reduce the density and decrease the thermal conductivity of course solid bricks.

Opis:
The research aimed to assess the effect of bottom sediment on the content, bioaccumulation and translocation of heavy metals in maize biomass. The investigations were conducted in 2006-2007 as a pot experiment on light soil of the granulometric composition of weakly-loamy sand. The experimental design comprised 3 treatments: without sediment (I), a 5% sediment admixture (II) and a 10% sediment admixture to the soil (III). Bottom sediment was added to the soil in the first year of the investigations. The content of Zn, Cu, Ni. Pb, Cd and Cr was determined using the ICP-EAS method in the plant material after its dry mineralization and ash solution in HNO3. The uptake of the above-mentioned metals by maize was computed alongside their bioaccumulation and translocation coefficients. The effect of bottom sediment admixture on heavy metal concentrations in maize was determined to be varied, e.g. a 5% dose of sediment added to soil decreased the content of all the analyzed heavy metals in the biomass of maize aerial parts, whereas a 10% admixture increased the content of Cu, Ni, Pb and Cr. The values of bioaccumulation coefficients revealed that an admixture of both doses of bottom sediment led to a decreased accumulation of Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni (5% dose) in maize aerial biomass. Moreover, the plant more easily accumulated Zn, Cd and Cu than Cr, Ni or Pb. Permissible amounts of heavy metals in plants to be used as animal fodder were not exceeded in the maize biomass.

Opis:
Different compounds including toxic heavy metals ions have been used in various industrial branches for ages. Therefore, these compounds are nowadays often identified in the natural environment. Plants usually function like indirect transporters through which heavy metals, in the form of ions, infiltrate from the environment into the human and animals’ food chains. The present paper studied the influence of urban agglomeration on the accumulation of certain heavy metals in tansy. The content of heavy metals ions (Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb) was marked in the tansy leaves. Depending on the location of sampling, large variations in the heavy metal content were observed in the plant material. The research results indicate that the heavy metal content of tansy is influenced by the close “neighborhood” of a well-developed urban agglomeration such as patrol stations and factories.

Opis:
The main aim of the scientific research was to study the ion-exchange processes in the treatment of industrial wastewaters containing a high concentration of heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+). The sorption results of heavy metal mixtures (Cu-Zn, Cu-Ni) from model solutions of sulfate salts on a strong-acid KU-2–8 cation exchanger in the H+-form were presented. The metals concentration was 10–50 meq/dm3. The efficiency conditions of cation regeneration in Cu2+-Zn2+, Cu2+-Ni2+-forms by 5, 8 and 10 % sulfuric acid solutions were studied. It was shown that the heavy metals from aqueous media can be removed not only from ion exchangers, but can also be restored from regenerative solutions by electrolysis to obtain metals in pure form. In general, the research results showed that the use of ion exchange is very effective in removing the heavy metal ions. The sorption efficiency and regeneration efficiency was about 100%.
