Opis:
Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) a Phase-II drug detoxification enzyme, was detected in Setaria cervi, a bovine filarial parasite. In vitro effect of diethylcarbamazine, butylated hydroxyanisole and phenobarbitone on the GST of adult female S. cervi was assayed by the addition of these compounds in the maintenance medium. The specific activity of GST towards 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene was increased progressively 1.2-1.97, 1.3-2.4 and 1.2-2.7 times at 10-100 µM of diethylcarbamazine, butylated hydroxyanisole and phenobarbitone, respectively, after 5 h at 37°C. Substrate specificity studies showed a higher increase in specific activity with ethacrynic acid and no change with cumene hydroperoxide. Although the intensity of GST activity band was more in extract from diethylcarbamazine or butylated hydroxyanisole treated worms extract, an extra band of activity appeared in those worm extracts compared to control worm extract. SDS/PAGE showed increased thickness of the band corresponding to purified GST in extracts from diethylcarbamazine/butylated hydroxyanisole/phenobarbitone treated worms. Purification and quantification of GST from diethylcarbamazine and butylated hydroxyanisole treated worms indicated an increase in enzyme specific activity. The increase in GST protein by these agents was blocked by prior treatment with actinomycin D, indicative of a transcription dependent response. The role of this enzyme in motility and viability of microfilariae and adult female was tested in vitro using a range of known GST inhibitors. Of those tested, ethacrynic acid, ellagic acid, 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, cibacron blue and butylated hydroxyanisole reduced the viability and motility of microfilariae and adult female worms at micromolar concentrations. These results suggest that S. cervi GST is inducible in response to the antifilarial drug diethylcarbamazine and may play an important role in parasite's survival, thus could be a potential drug target.

Positron lifetime and pressure-volume-temperature experiments were performed as function of T (100-485 K) and P (10$\text{}^{-5}$ Pa-500 MPa) on a fluoroelastomer. From positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, analyzed with LT9.0 assuming a dispersion in the e$\text{}^{+}$ (τ$\text{}_{2}$) and o-Ps (τ$\text{}_{3}$) lifetime, the mean, 〈v$\text{}_{h}$〉, and the width (standard deviation), σ$\text{}_{h}$, of the hole size distribution were calculated. The pressure-volume-temperature data were analyzed using the Simha-Somcynsky hole-lattice theory to estimate the specific hole free volume V$\text{}_{f}$. From a comparison of V$\text{}_{f}$ with 〈v$\text{}_{h}$〉 the specific hole number, N'$\text{}_{h}$, is estimated. The data from thermal expansion and pressure experiments show complete agreement when taking into account the compressibility of the occupied volume.

Catharanthus roseus G. Don. (CR) or periwinkle plants are widely grown/cultivated as garden plants in the tropics and subtropics. In spite of its predominantly entomophilous nature, CR pollen had been reported to be airborne and allergenic. The objective of this study was to discover the seasonal changes of CR pollen concentration in air, to determine its potential to cause respiratory allergy and to analyze its allergenic components. A 2-year aerobiological survey was conducted with a Burkard 7-day sampler in an agricultural farm in the suburban zone of Calcutta city where CR pollen was found to be almost perennial with 3.6-5.4% contribution to the aeropollen load. Skin prick test was conducted on 282 respiratory allergic individuals living within a 15 km radius of the study area. 29.8% of them were positive to CR pollen. Among them, 80.9% were directly involved in gardening. The whole pollen extract was subjected to gel fi ltration in a Sephacryl S-200 column. Among 5 eluted fractions, fraction I showed optimum IgE-reactivity in ELISA-inhibition. The fraction I shows 4 protein components in SDS-PAGE, within which 3 (40-66 kD molecular mass) were found to be IgE-reactive in immunoblotting using patient sera. It can be concluded that CR pollen can trigger IgEmediated respiratory allergy in the people living in close proximity.

Density (ρ), refractive index (n), ultrasonic velocity (u), and viscosity (η) were measured for the binary mixtures formed by butylamine with 1-butanol and tert-butanol at temperatures 293, 303, and 313 K over the entire composition range. Excess molar volume V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, molar refraction deviation ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, deviation in ultrasonic velocity Δu, viscosity deviation Δη, and excess Gibb's free energy of activation for viscous flow ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were derived from the experimental data and the computed results were fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$, ΔR$\text{}_{m}$, Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ were plotted against the mole fraction of butylamine. The observed positive and negative values of excess parameters for both the mixtures were explained on the basis of intermolecular interactions present in these mixtures. The higher negative values of V$\text{}_{m}^{E}$ and ΔR$\text{}_{m}$ and positive values of Δu, Δη, and ΔG$\text{}^{*E}$ for butylamine + 1-butanol mixture suggest that specific interactions are taking place in butylamine + 1-butanol mixture, while weak dipole-dipole induced forces and dispersive forces seem to be responsible for butylamine + tert-butanol mixture. Furthermore, different empirical relations were used to correlate the binary refractive indices. An excellent agreement was found between experimental and theoretical values.

Opis:
Free vibration of a clamped visco-elastic rectangular plate having bi-direction exponentially varying thickness has been analysed on the basis of classical plate theory. For visco-elastic materials, basic elastic and viscous elements are combined. We have assumed the Kelvin model for visco-elasticity, which is a combination of elastic and viscous elements connected in parallel. Here, the elastic element is constituted by a spring and the viscous one is a dashpot. An approximate but quite convenient frequency equation is derived by using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. Logarithmic decrement, time period and deflection (at two different instant of time) for the first two modes of vibration and for various values of the taper constants and aspect ratio are calculated. Comparison studies have been carried out with bi-linearly thickness variation to establish the accuracy and versatility of the method.

Uwzględniono lepkosprężyste właściwości materiału płyty, bazując na podstawowych elementach reologicznych. Przyjęto model Kelvina, tj. równoległą kombinację elementu sprężystego i wiskotycznego. Równanie ruchu płyty rozwiązano metodą Rayleigha-Ritza, otrzymując przybliżoną, ale wygodną do analizy postać wyrażenia w dziedzinie częstości. Następnie wyznaczono wartość logarytmicznego dekrementu tłumienia, okresu drgań i ugięcia płyty dla dwóch pierwszych funkcji własnych dla różnych parametrów opisujących zmienną grubość i wymiary zewnętrzne płyty. Wyniki obliczeń przy uwzględnieniu zmiany grubości płyty porównano z dotychczasowymi rezultatami badań w celu potwierdzenia dokładności i uniwersalności metody.

The refractive indices, densities and ultrasonic velocities of binary liquid mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) with methanol and o-cresol over the entire composition range have been measured at 293, 303 and 313 K. Refractive index, density and ultrasonic velocity data have been used to evaluate the molar refraction deviation $ΔR_{m}$, deviation in ultrasonic velocity Δu, excess internal pressure $π_{i}^{E}$, excess molar enthalpy $H_{m}^{E}$ and excess free volume $V_{f}^{E}$. The computed results of $ΔR_{m}$, Δu, $π_{i}^{E}$, $H_{m}^{E}$ and $V_{f}^{E}$ were fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. These results suggest that specific strong interactions are taking place in THF + o-cresol mixture while dispersive forces seem to be responsible for behaviour of THF + methanol mixture. Further, experimental refractive index and density data of these mixtures were also used to test the validity of the empirical/semi-empirical relations and models for refractive index and density, respectively.

Specific heat ratio (γ), pseudo-Grüneisen parameter (Γ), heat capacity $(C_p)$ and effective Debye temperature $(θ_{D})$ for binary system of tetrahydrofuran with o-cresol and methanol respectively, were calculated using the experimentally measured densities, velocities and viscosities of the pure liquids and their mixtures over the whole composition range and at T = 293, 303, 313 K. The excess pseudo-Grüneisen parameter $(Γ ^{E})$, excess molar isentropic compressibility $(K_{s}^{E})$ and excess acoustic impedance $(Z^{E})$ were also calculated. The excess deviation functions have been correlated using Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The observed values of the excess parameters plotted against the mole fraction of tetrahydrofuran have been explained on the basis of intermolecular interaction suggesting strong interaction in tetrahydrofuran + o-cresol than in tetrahydrofuran + methanol. Partial molar isentropic compressibility at infinite dilution and their excess values were calculated for each component. Sanchez theory, Goldsach-Sarvas volume fraction statistics, Sudgen's relation, Flory-Patterson-Rastogi and Brock and Bird model were used with the Aurebach relation to compute theoretically the values of ultrasonic velocities at varying temperatures. The velocity deviations were estimated in terms of average percentage deviations. Internal pressure for both the systems were calculated theoretically and discussed on the basis of relative applicability of the models in theoretical estimations. The isothermal compressibility $(k_T)$, for these binary mixtures were theoretically evaluated by using the Flory statistical theory and five hard sphere models and compared with the experimental values.

This paper discusses acoustic and lasers based bathymetric systems in terms of their applicability in diverse circumstances. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared in terms of capabilities, cost and accuracy. None of these systems can provide full bottom coverage in all circumstances but could be supplementary to each other. Information has been presented in support of this conclusion. Acoustic bathymetry is suitable at deeper waters whereas laser bathymetry may be used in shallow clear coastal waters. A hybrid option has been suggested with the mix of these systems for higher survey efficiency and lesser costs. This paper is of interest to persons involved in ocean acoustics study and survey projects planners as well as to the developers of laser instruments for study ocean water and bottom properties and object detection such as wracks, boulders and other objects.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate surface waves in an anisotropic, elastic solid medium under the influence of gravity. First, a theory of generalised surface waves was developed and then it was employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley and Rayleigh, Love type. The wave velocity equations were obtained for different cases and they are in well agreement with the corresponding classical result, when the effect of gravity, viscosity as well as parameters for fibre-reinforcement of the material medium are ignored.

This paper reports on a Butacene® based composite propellant with high burning rate. The effect of replacing HTPB with Butacene® on the physical, mechanical and ballistic properties, and sensitivity towards impact and friction, has been studied. The ballistic properties were evaluated as burning rates at various pressures (7-11 MPa), pressure exponents, ignition temperatures etc. As expected, a remarkable enhancement in burning rate at low pressures was observed with increasing percentage of Butacene®. Comparatively lower n-values were observed for compositions containing Butacene® than for HTPB based propellants. The sensitivity of Butacene® based compositions, in terms of impact and friction, was found to be increased with an increasing percentage of Butacene®.

Oryza sativa Linn. (rice) and Corchorus capsularis Linn. (jute) are the two major crops of the Bengal basin. Both rice and jute are generally grown in submerged flooded conditions, where arsenic bioavailability is high in soil. The consumers of the edible parts from both plants therefore face an inevitable source of exposure to arsenic, with consequent accumulation and toxicity. The objective of the study was to observe the in-vivo temporal variation of arsenic bioaccumulation in the different parts of O. sativa and C. capsularis. Rice plant specimens (Aman rice, Ratna variety) of different age groups (1, 2 and 3 months old) were analyzed in HG-AAS for absorbed arsenic content in different parts. The accumulation of arsenic remained significantly high in the initial phase of growth, but decreased with time. Amount of arsenic bioaccumulation followed the decreasing order: root > basal stem > median stem > apical stem > leaves > grains in all the three age groups of the rice plant samples. C. capsularis followed a trend of arsenic bioaccumulation similar to O. sativa. O. sativa had more accumulation potential than C. capsularis, but C. capsularis showed much higher efficiency of arsenic translocation in the above ground parts. This is the first ever report of time-dependent decrease in arsenic bioaccumulation in O. sativa and C. capsularis. The contamination level can reach the grain part in significant amount and can cause health hazards in more severely arsenic affected areas. Intensive investigation on a complete food chain is urgently needed in the arsenic contaminated zones for further risk assessments.

The inversion of canopy reflectance models is widely used for the retrieval of vegetation properties from remote sensing. This study evaluates the retrieval of soybean biophysical variables of leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content, canopy chlorophyll content, and equivalent leaf water thickness from proximal reflectance data integrated broad bands corresponding to moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer, thematic mapper, and linear imaging self scanning sensors through inversion of the canopy radiative transfer model, PROSAIL. Three different inversion approaches namely the look-up table, genetic algorithm, and artificial neural network were used and performances were evaluated. Application of the genetic algorithm for crop parameter retrieval is a new attempt among the variety of optimization problems in remote sensing which have been successfully demonstrated in the present study. Its performance was as good as that of the look-up table approach and the artificial neural network was a poor performer. The general order of estimation accuracy for para-meters irrespective of inversion approaches was leaf area index > canopy chlorophyll content > leaf chlorophyll content > equivalentleaf water thickness. Performance of inversion was comparable for broadband reflectances of all three sensors in the optical region with insignificant differences in estimation accuracy among them.
