The author aims at presenting mercy in the letters of St. Paul in the aspect of the enriching relation of God towards man. He analyses the most representative texts, containing the semantic base: ἔλεος–ἐλεέω and οἰκτιρμός–οἰκτίρω. He takes the personal experience of God’s mercy in the apostle’s life as the starting point. Then, he attempts to deduce how it has influenced the development of the doctrine of mercy and how it has reflected in the practice of the Christian life. Finally, he enquires about the maturity of the Pauline doctrine of God’s mercy.
Autor stawia sobie za cel prezentację miłosierdzia w listach św. Pawła w aspekcie ubogacającej relacji Boga do człowieka. Poddaje analizie najbardziej reprezentatywne teksty, które zawierają bazę semantyczną: ἔλεος–ἐλεέω i οἰκτιρμός–οἰκτίρω. Punktem wyjścia czyni osobiste doświadczenie miłosierdzia Bożego w życiu apostoła. Następnie podejmuje próbę wnioskowania jak ono wpłynęło na rozwój nauki o miłosierdziu i jakie znalazło przełożenie na praktykę życia chrześcijańskiego. W końcu zadaje pytanie o dojrzałość Pawłowej nauki o Bożym miłosierdziu.

Manuscripts of the Servant of God sister Benigna Konsolata Ferrero, carefully studied by her confessor, Father Luigi Boccardo, were printed shortly after her death. Even though she already bore the title of “Apostle of Mercy,” no one at that time could have guessed that she would become one of the earliest precursors of the Divine Mercy. One of the first to discover the character of Sr. Benigna Konsolata was Father Michal (Michael) Sopoćko, the confessor of Saint Sister Faustina Kowalska. Already knowing the message of his penitent, he revealed the similarities between the two messages. The purpose of the message dictated to the Servant of God is devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and reveals His greatest attribute, which is the Mercy of God.

Jezus, nauczając w przypowieściach, poruszał m.in. temat Bożego miłosierdzia i za ich pomocą ukazywał Boga, który przebacza człowiekowi jego przewinienia. Podczas lektury Łukaszowych przypowieści o przebaczającym Bogu (a są to przypowieści o dwóch dłużnikach [7,41-43], o nieurodzajnym drzewie figowym [13,6-9], o zagubionej owcy [15,3-7], o zagubionej drachmie [15,8-10], o synu marnotrawnym [15,11-32], o nieuczciwym rządcy [16,1-8a] oraz o faryzeuszu i celniku [18,9-14]) możemy zauważyć liczne paradoksy i nielogiczność sytuacji, zdarzeń, przykładów, zachowań. Pokazują one, że Boże miłosierdzie jest tak wielkie, iż przewyższa ludzką logikę i każe wznieść się ponad poziom zwykłej sprawiedliwości. Niezrozumiałość Bożego postępowania względem nawracającego się człowieka potwierdza prawdy starotestamentalne, że ludzie nie są w stanie pojąć działania Boga (por. 1 Sm 16,7; Iz 55,8).

Wśród rozmaitych wątków refleksji religijnej Norwida zwraca uwagę, niemal niedostrzegany w dotychczasowych badaniach, temat Bożego miłosierdzia i miłosierdzia świadczonego bliźnim. Pisma poety (listy, proza i poezja) zdradzają wysiłek autora (wyrażony np. w tworzeniu ciekawych neologizmów) zmierzający do przeniknięcia i doprecyzowania tej teologicznej prawdy, do jej pełniejszego zrozumienia i nowej, głębszej interpretacji. „Miłosierdzie” jest przede wszystkim ważnym narzędziem Norwidowego „mówienia o Bogu”, jest dlań także streszczeniem istoty nauczania ewangelicznego (Nowy Testament nazywa poeta „Testamentem-miłosierdzia”). Prawda o miłosierdziu sytuuje się w centrum personalistycznej antropologii Norwida („Osobistość jest rzeczą miłosierdzia”) i tworzy osnowę jego myśli społecznej („społeczne miłowanie”, „jedenaste przykazanie”). Z pism poety wyłaniają się tropy wskazujące na jego inspiracje w tym zakresie m.in. teologią miłosierdzia św. Pawła oraz nauczaniem kaznodziei XIX-wiecznych (jak ks. Piotr Semenenko). Można zatem postrzegać Norwida jako tego myśliciela chrześcijańskiego, który antycypując rewelacje teologiczne wieku XX, wychylił się samodzielnie już w XIX stuleciu ku temu ważnemu zagadnieniu wiary.
Among the various themes of Norwid’s religious reflection, one that attracts particular attention but has largely been overlooked in previous research is the theme of divine mercy and mercy rendered to one’s neighbours. The poet’s writings (letters, prose and poetry) divulge the author’s effort (expressed, for instance, in his interesting neologisms) to penetrate and clarify this theological truth, to understand it more fully and interpret it in a new and deeper way. “Mercy” is primarily an important tool of Norwid’s “speaking of God”; for him it is also a summary of the essence of the Gospel teaching (the poet calls the New Testament the “Testament of mercy”). The truth about mercy is situated at the centre of Norwid’s personalist anthropology (“Osobistość jest rzeczą miłosierdzia” [Personality is the thing of mercy]) and forms the fabric of his social thought (“social loving”, “the eleventh commandment”). Clues emerge from the poet’s writings indicating that he was inspired in this regard by, among others, St Paul’s theology of mercy and the teaching of 19th-century preachers (such as Fr Piotr Semenenko). Thus, Norwid can be seen as that Christian thinker who, anticipating the theological revelations of the 20th century, independently addressed this important issue of faith as early as in the 19th century.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest porównawcza analiza koncepcji miłosierdzia zawartych w dwu tekstach Karola Wojtyły–Jana Pawła II: w utworze dramatycznym Brat naszego Boga oraz w papieskim dokumencie – encyklice Dives in misericordia. Dotychczasowe odczytania sztuki Wojtyły skupiały się na interpretacjach biograficznych i historycznych, z pominięciem aspektu teologicznego. Autorka formułuje natomiast tezę, że kluczowe dla sensu sztuki są właśnie sensy teologiczne, a ściślej – kategoria miłosierdzia. Porównanie zawartości ideowej dramatu oraz encykliki prowadzi do wniosku, że wszystkie najważniejsze dla papieskiego dokumentu myśli można – w postaci niedyskursywnej – odnaleźć w jego wcześniejszym o trzydzieści lat utworze dramatycznym. Odkrycie to potwierdza jedność ideowo-aksjologiczną całego dzieła Papieża Polaka, potwierdza też słuszność ujęć przypisujących jego literackim utworom status swoistego „laboratorium myśli” dla dzieł późniejszych i utrzymanych w innej niż artystyczna konwencji.
The article presents a comparative analysis of the conceptions of mercy put forward in two texts by Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II, namely in his play Our God’s Brother and in the Encyclical Letter Dives in Misericordia. The existing interpretations of Our God’s Brother tend to disregard its theological aspects and focus on the biographic and historical issues instead. The author proposes a different approach to the reading of Wojtyła’s play and holds that its theological aspects, in particular the reference to the category of mercy, are crucial to its interpretation. A comparison of the ideational layer of the play with that of the encyclical in question leads to the conclusion that the most significant ideas present in Dives in Misericordia were expressed—in a non-discursive way—in the play Our God’s Brother, which preceded the encyclical by thirty years. This discovery confirms the axiological and ideational unity of the Polish Pope’s entire output, as well as the rightness of those who have pointed that Wojtyła’s literary works must be considered in terms of a ‘laboratory of thought’ which prepared the ground for his later writings making use of genres other than literary. The first premise of J. L. Schellenberg’s Hiddenness Argument equates God’s love with a positive relationship to human beings. To illustrate this relationship, the human model of parental love is used, based on the standards of the modern American liberal world, not on the biblical standard. As a result, we attribute to God a narrowly understood horizontal relationship towards people, which is completely alien to the understanding of love developed in the Christian tradition. When we refer to the classical theism that recognized love as the central attribute of God, we will see that it should be understood in a vertical model, consisting in the offering of good and mercy. This understanding undermines the benevolent theism and replaces it with the merciful theism or theism of mercy. Ultimately, this makes the first premise of the Hiddenness Argument very questionable and the whole argument calls for a significant revision.
Pierwsza przesłanka J. L. Schellenberga argumentu z ukrytości zrównuje miłość Boga z pozytywnym stosunkiem do człowieka. Aby zilustrować tę relację, posłużono się ludzkim modelem miłości rodzicielskiej, opartym na standardach współczesnego amerykańskiego liberalnego świata, a nie na standardach biblijnych. W rezultacie przypisujemy Bogu wąsko rozumiany horyzontalny stosunek do ludzi, który jest zupełnie obcy pojmowaniu miłości wypracowanemu w tradycji chrześcijańskiej. Kiedy odwołamy się do klasycznego teizmu, który uznawał miłość za centralny przymiot Boga, zobaczymy, że należy ją rozumieć w modelu wertykalnym, polegającym na ofiarowaniu dobra i miłosierdzia (łaski). Takie rozumienie podważa teizm dobroczynności i zastępuje go teizmem miłosierdzia (łaski). Dzięki temu okazuje się, że pierwsza przesłanka argumentu z ukrytości jest bardzo wątpliwa, a cały argument wymaga znaczącej rewizji.

The Book of Jonah is remarkably theocentric. The events underline that JHWH is truly the only God, because he has the power of over natural elements, flora and fauna and destiny of other nations who are subordinate to Him even far from the homeland of the Israelites. JHWH Himself is the origin of all creation and will lead it to its final fulfillment. There are no other gods, and JHWH alone determines what is sinful, and JHWH Himself can show mercy in response to people’s repentance. God thus pictured is the only God, full of mercy. In His infinite mercy, he is not exclusively concerned with the Jewish nation. On the contrary, JHWH sends the Prophet to the pagans and in doing so he offers His mercy and redemption to them, which is undoubtedly extraordinary in the Bible.

Spravodlivosť a milosrdenstvo sa v teologických súvislostiach často predstavujú ako Božie vlastnosti. V praxi sa neraz stretávame s (nekorektným) tvrdením, že Boh je viac milosrdný ako spravodlivý. V príspevku sa chceme zamerať na predmetné Božie vlastnosti v ich vzájomnej korelácii, pričom východiskom je striktná náuka Cirkvi, podľa ktorej Boh je absolútne dokonalý a z toho dôvodu nie je možné preferovať jednu vlastnosť pred druhou. Milosrdenstvo môže byť prejavené iba v plnosti spravodlivosti; milosrdný Boh miluje láskou, ktorá vychádza z plnosti spravodlivosti. Človek sa tak môže stať prijímateľom milosti – to je už konkretizované vyjadrenie Božích vlastností v kontexte náuky o milosti tak, ako ju učí Magistérium Katolíckej cirkvi. Pre dosiahnutie cieľa sa zameriame na teologickú náuku v predmetných témach v úzkom vzťahu k biblickým textom tak Starého, ako aj Nového zákona.
Pope Francis points out the importance of mercy and the correct interpretation of justice in correlation with mercy. In the bull Misericordiae vultus points to the great gift of Jesus’ mercy, which seeks sinners, to offer them forgiveness and salvation. Mercy interpreted in this way comes to the fore before the understanding of justice, which stands for the observance of the law, according to which people are divided into righteous and sinners. Jesus’ attitude is expressed in the statement: „For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners“ (Mattew 9:13). The merciful Jesus shows love to man, which is a gift of God’s grace. God loves us in the fullness of His righteous love, which accepts anyone who does not hinder the reception of that love.

The article shows how in the light of God’s Mercy a human being rediscovers and realises the basic truth that in his/her heart is a great longing and hunger for God’s love. God invites to listen to what He says to humans through the words of the Holy Bible. He invites people to listen and realise the loving presence of God inside. The author of the article shows that trust is the fruit of a relationship in which a person knows that he/she is loved. Trust presupposes a longing for God and a sincere search for Him in everything. The road to trust is expressed in three attitudes: in seeking God inside; in sensitive listening to His voice in one’s heart; and in trustingly opening oneself to His love and immersion in His mercy. Thanks to loneliness, silence and prayer, a human being discovers the Source of life which lies deep inside his/her heart. In the human being, in his/her interior is the source from which he/she draws life and nourishes hope. Immersion in this source of mercy means that one experiences inner change.
Artykuł pokazuje, jak w świetle Bożego Miłosierdzia człowiek na nowo odkrywa i uświadamia sobie podstawową prawdę, że w jego sercu kryje się wielka tęsknota za miłością i głód Boga. Bóg sam zaprasza do słuchania tego, co mówi do człowieka przez słowa Pisma Świętego. Zaprasza, aby człowiek, słuchając, uświadomił sobie pełną miłości obecność Boga w swoim wnętrzu. Autor artykułu pokazuje, że ufnośćjest owocem relacji, w której człowiek wie, że jest kochany. Ufność zakłada tęsknotę za Bogiem i szczere poszukiwanie Go we wszystkim. Droga do ufności wyraża się w trzech postawach: w poszukiwaniu Boga w swoim wnętrzu, we wrażliwym słuchaniu Jego głosu we własnym sercu oraz w ufnym otwarciu się na Jego miłość i zanurzeniu w Jego miłosierdziu. Dzięki samotności, milczeniu i modlitwie człowiek odkrywa Źródło życia, które kryje się w głębi jego serca. W człowieku bowiem, w jego wnętrzu, jest źródło, z którego czerpie on życie i karmi swoją nadzieję. Zanurzenie w tym źródle miłosierdzia sprawia, że człowiek doświadcza wewnętrznej przemiany.

Charakterystyczną cechą katolickiej myśli teologicznej ostatnich lat, jest zainteresowanie tematem miłosierdzia. Miłosierdzie Boże oprócz biblijno-dogmatycznego posiada również wymiar liturgiczny. Liturgia bowiem stanowi uprzywilejowane miejsce doświadczenia i głoszenia miłosierdzia Bożego. Dokonuje się to w ciągu całego roku liturgicznego. W rytmie i wydarzeniach czasu bowiem Kościół wspomina i przeżywa tajemnice zbawienia, doświadczając miłosierdzia Bożego, które najpełniej objawia nam Jezus Chrystus. Kościół wyraża i przeżywa swoją wiarę we wszystkich modlitwach, ale czyni to w sposób szczególny w modlitwach towarzyszących sprawowaniu Eucharystii w ciągu całego roku liturgicznego. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób misterium Bożego miłosierdzia celebrowane i odsłaniane jest podczas sprawowania Mszy Świętej w Kościele Polskokatolickim w trakcie całego roku liturgicznego. Nie ma dnia, aby Kościół sprawując Eucharystię, nie odwoływał się do Boga miłosiernego. Mówią o tym modlitwy zawarte w Obrzędach Mszy Świętej Kościoła Polskokatolickiego. Kościół przy każdej okazji wkłada w usta szafarzy świętych misteriów głębokie wołanie ku miłosiernemu Bogu. Nie zależnie od wszelkich wezwań do miłosierdzia Bożego wprost zamieszczonych w Obrzędach Mszy Świętej, Najświętsza Ofiara jest w swej istocie najpotężniejszym błaganiem Boga o litość i miłosierdzie.
A characteristic feature of Catholic theological thought in recent years is the interest in the subject of God`s mercy. The mercy of God apart from its biblical and dogmatic aspect also has a liturgical dimension. Indeed, the liturgy is the privileged place of the experience and proclamation of mercy. This is done throughout the liturgical year. In the rhythm of events and the time we remember and live the mysteries of salvation, experiencing God`s mercy which is most fully revealed by Christ. The Church expresses and experiences her faith in all prayers but does so in a special way in the prayers accompanying the celebration of the Eucharist throughout the liturgical year. The purpose of this article is to show how the mystery of God`s mercy is revealed and celebrated during the celebration of Mass throughout the liturgical year in the Polish Catholic Church. Not a day goes by as the Church celebrates the Eucharist where she does not refer to a merciful God. Prayers contained in the Rite of Mass of the Polish Catholic Church speak of this. At every opportunity the Church cries out to the God of mercy. Of all the calls to the mercy of God which are part of the Holy Mass, the Holy Sacrifice is in its essence the most powerful plea before God for pity and mercy.

The author of the article Christ as the face of the Father’s mercy. A top-down and theophanic conception of God’s Mercy draws the most fundamental approach to the mystery of mercy as a form of the inner revelation of the Triune God's life from the ample Polish literature devoted to the issue of God’s Mercy, and analyzes it. Also practicing mercy, according to this conception, may be done in the right way if its features are recognized in Jesus Christ the Incarnated Son’s deeds. The author calls this perspective of theology of mercy “a top-down conception”, as humanity is not able to comprehend the essence of mercy without the aid of the supernatural world that, on the one hand, shows what God is like in His essence, and on the other, how one should follow God to be saved. God's self-revelation in the salutary events becomes – according to the author – the best interpretation key of God's theology of mercy, showing His Trinitarian character.

The need of the present times speaks for bringing the face of a merciful God once again. The concept of ”mercy” is often neglected today, and it even hinders modern man, who, through the previously unknown development of science and technology, more than ever in the human history, has subdued the earth and became its master. The awareness of man’s loneliness, his alienation from the community of the world, tradition and religion, and the conviction that he – man – is the creator of his own humanity, have become dominant. Life itself becomes the central value for him, not the immortality of life. The only content he has left are his whims and desires devoid of permanent and certain measures – doomed to variables determined by the condition and social situation – values. His existence was revealed to him in all its nakedness and fragility, arousing fear and concern with regard to loneliness, illness and death. And yet, through her life, Saint Faustine Kowalska showed unlimited trust in God’s mercy, thus opening herself to the action of grace, which allowed her to give her life the right purpose. This purpose of life is determined by faith, which for many followers of Christ became the foundation of their lives.

Duchowość jezuitów wyrasta z korzeni, jakimi są Ćwiczenia duchowe. To w nich, dzięki nim i na ich drodze każdy jezuita formuje swój umysł i serce. Duchowość papieża Franciszka także wyrasta z ignacjańskich korzeni, bo jest on duchowym synem św. Ignacego. Duchowość ignacjańska charakteryzuje się szukaniem i znajdowaniem Boga we wszystkim, aby Go miłować i służyć Mu we wszystkich rzeczach. Także dla Jorge Bergoglio świat jest pomocą w misji oraz jej obiektem misji. Wszyscy są posłani do takiego a nie innego świata, do świata, w którym żyją i który potrzebuje odkupienia, przemiany oraz powrotu do Źródła. Powrót do Boga dokonuje się przez modlitwę i rozeznawanie. W duchowości ignacjańskiej modlitwa i rozeznawanie duchowe są ściśle powiązane. Nie ma prawdziwie chrześcijańskiego rozeznania duchowego bez modlitwy. Natomiast prawdziwa modlitwa zawsze prowadzi do autentycznego rozeznawania duchowego. W myśli św. Ignacego przez modlitwę i rozeznawanie człowiek staje się narzędziem, aby kochać i służyć Bogu we wszystkim. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie ignacjańskich korzeni duchowości papieża Franciszka, w której centrum znajduje się przesłanie o Bożym miłosierdziu.
Jesuit spirituality grows out of the roots of the Spiritual Exercises. It is in the Exercises, thanks to them and through them, that every Jesuit forms his mind and heart. Also the spirituality of Pope Francis grows from the Ignatian roots, and he is the spiritual son of Saint Ignatius. Ignatian spirituality is characterised by seeking and finding God in everything, to love Him and to serve Him in all aspects. Also for Jorge Bergoglio, the world is the mission environment, help in the mission and the object of the mission. Everyone is sent to a „such” and not different world, to the world in which they live and which needs redemption, transformation and a return to the Source. Return to God is through prayer and discernment. In Ignatian spirituality, prayer and spiritual discernment are closely related. There is no truly Christian spiritual discernment without prayer. However, true prayer always leads to authentic spiritual discernment. In the thought of Saint Ignatius through prayer and discernment the human being becomes a tool to love and serve God in everything. The purpose of the article is to show the Ignatian roots of the spirituality of Pope Francis, in the centre of which is the message of God’s mercy.

The ongoing Year of Mercy is the occasion to look at a priest performing religious functions among children and young people through the prism of his ministry in a confessional. Starting with the significance of the sacrament of penance as a source of personal priest’s development; the author of the article describes his mission as a confessor, as well as lists a priest’s duties. The author pays attention to the sacrament of penance as the way leading to the new evangelism in the face of the crisis in living this sacrament. The article contains the answer to the following question: what kind of confessor are people currently looking for’; it also shows the triple mission of a person called to fulfill religious tasks: priest – confessor – religious teacher.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie Kościoła jako sakramentu miłosierdzia. Według Soboru Watykańskiego II Kościół jest sakramentem zbawienia, jednak jest nim wyłącznie w Chrystusie i w związku z Nim. Misja Kościoła w świecie polega na przekazywaniu Chrystusa obecnego w nim przez łaskę i słowo, a tym samym na jednoczeniu całej ludzkości z Chrystusem. Kościół nie tylko przekazuje Chrystusowe objawienie o miłosiernej miłości Boga do człowieka, ale sam o tyle jest Kościołem Chrystusowym, o ile jest skutecznym znakiem tej miłości. Świadectwo miłości miłosiernej jest obowiązkiem zarówno Kościoła jako całości, jak i każdego poszczególnego wiernego.
The article deals with an issue of the Church being a sacrament of mercy. According to the Second Vatican Council, the Church, being a sacrament of salvation, is one only in Christ and in connection with Him. The Church's mission to the world is to communicate Christ already present in it through His grace and words; that is to unite the whole humanity with Christ. Not only does the Church show Christ's revelation of God’s charity, but also it is the Church of Christ himself as long as it remains the sign of that charity. Giving the testimony of the charity is the obligation of both the whole Church and its each and every member.
