Opis:
The aim of this article is to show how German students can be motivated by learning games. Apart from the development and didacticisation of the learning game “Marbles”, the attitude of  Turkish families and language teaching educational establishments and the support of the DaF lessons by German mediating institutions in Turkey will be considered. The attitude of Turkish families to learning foreign languages is mostly positive. Turkish educational authorities and those responsible for education take various measures to expand foreign language teaching availability in the schools. German institutions which provide teachers (Goethe-Institut, ZfA, DAAD) promote the improvement of German teaching in Turkey. Nevertheless, the quality of German teaching is not satisfactory mostly because the available teachers are not adequately qualified, teacher training is remote from practice, the quality of text books and teaching materials, the traditions of learning, the excessively large classes, inadequate learning environment (language cabinets and equipment), the nature and method of central examinations (multiple choice) and their significance in the Turkish educational system. In the long-term, this leads to frustration in both teachers and students. The Turkish educational authorities initially took measures to expand the availability of language teaching in the course of harmonisation of the Turkish educational system to that of the EU e.g. the introduction of a second foreign language. German mediating institutions ensure reasonable further training for teachers locally and in Germany and support the creation of teaching materials etc. The Ministry of Education in Turkey, has started to take measures for students to learn other languages such as German, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Arabic, ethnic languages in Turkey, et cetera in the educational institutions in addition to English. For example, in the Anatolian high schools two foreign languages are taught.  The Board for Higher Education in Turkey, has introduced second foreign language lessons in  foreign language teacher programs, envisioned to be taken for three semesters, in order for the language teachers to gain experience in the field of two languages.  Private education institutes are emphasizing that they are teaching more than one foreign language in order to draw more students. Families make an economic sacrifice for their children in order for them to learn foreign languages. It is observed that in some districts of certain major cities, teaching of foreign languages has started to be given as early as at kindergarten level. In Turkey, German is preferred as the second foreign language in general. Nowadays, German is the second preferred language from primary to high school in Turkey. The quality of German language lessons should be increased for more students to select German as the second foreign language in the coming years. Despite all these efforts, teaching foreign language is not up to the desired level in Turkey (Bayraktaroğlu, 2014, pp. 9-14; Demircan, 2014, pp. 17-22). For that reason, it is important that motivating teaching methods and teaching materials be developed for German teaching.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the changing role and status of writing skills in the methodology of German language teaching, as well as to sketch the most recent trends which point to this issue. Allowing for the idea of autonomy of language teaching, which has been thoroughly discussed during debates concerning foreign language teaching in recent years, an attempt to select and highlight particular competence which should distinguish a student being able to develop writing skills in a foreign language in an autonomous way, has been undertaken in the article. Moreover, the most novel trends in methodology, which can be taken into account in the problem raised in the article, have been briefly presented.

Aim. In Turkey, in connection with the Bologna process, German is also taught in Turkish universities as an elective course. There is an important relationship between the selection of the subject in the elective German courses, detailed planning of the courses, and the implementation of the appropriate method. In this study, the subject of professions was planned for the elective German courses. The purpose of this study is the preparation, implementation and evaluation of a sample lesson to describe the selection of the subject of professions for the German course taught as an elective course in the universities. Concept and Methods. This study was conducted by qualitative research. The document research technique was used in the study (Yıldırım & Şimşek, 2008). During the 2018/2019 academic year, I taught about the subject of profession selection in my German courses. I prepared, implemented and evaluated the subject of professions according to the lesson planning model I had previously developed (Coşkun, 2018). I prepared the materials used in this course according to this model. Result and Conclusion. The success of the lesson planning model mentioned above was also observed in the activities conducted earlier. It was also seen that the students who attended German courses in connection with the Bologna process exerted efforts in establishing contact with the instructor and the students attending the class. It was observed that the participants introduced themselves, mentioned the field or the branch in the university where they were studying, and were interested to gain experience abroad in order to be successful in their professions. In addition to the subject discussed in the class, the method implemented in the lesson and the planning of the lesson according to the method, play an important role in the continuation of this interest. Therefore, effective lesson planning models and unique methods should be developed. Origin. Students from all the departments of the university may attend the elective German language classes opened in connection with the Bologna process. The condition for participation in the courses “German for Erasmus” and “German for Communication” which I teach, is to learn German at the A1 level. It is frequently observed that the participants speak German at different levels. The overseas experience of the participants, the quality of the German and other language education they had received from primary to high school and university play an important role in this. In the recent years, the number of participants from German and other foreign language speaking countries has increased. The students who had been in German-speaking countries under the Erasmus program participate in the German courses also to maintain their fluency in the German language. In order to execute the German courses effectively for different purposes, for different fields and participants coming from different countries and students with different levels of fluency, a suitable method should be developed. It is believed that this inter-disciplinary study will contribute to the active German courses.

Compliments and compliment responses are social actions that reflect norms of politeness and solidarity among speakers. These compliment/responses are negotiated among interactants who employ varying response strategies in different language/culture environments. A lack of knowledge about preferred strategies may cause cultural misunderstandings and feelings of disconnectedness. This article provides a concrete plan for implementing a lesson on compliment/responses in advanced beginning German language courses. The lesson plan is informed by conversation analytical research and pursues a teaching approach that nurtures interactional competence for enabling students to utilize culturally appropriate response strategies to actively engage with speakers of the target culture, creating positive feelings of appreciation and social harmony.

Opis:
At the end of the 18th century, in the Habsburg monarchy there was a fundamental change in the language profile of elementary education. The “Allgemeine Schulordnung” Act of 1774 brought compulsory German language education to schools in all provinces. This was contradictory to the established practice of teaching focused on the mother tongue and the language of religion. The introduction of German language required means of propaganda which would help to explain why linguistic conventions in the formof trans-regional languages of communication and Latin as a universal language, verified over the centuries in the Habsburg monarchy, were to be abandoned. The high status of Romance languages and widespread Slavic languages in the Habsburg monarchy led to expected resistance to the imposition of obligatory German language education. The article presents discursive strategies in the Habsburg language and educational policies that were in use after the enactment of the “Allgemeine Schulordnung” Act (1774) until its replacement by “Politische Verfassung” (1806).

The following article presents the results of a survey in which teachers and students were asked to give their opinion on the German textbook Weltour or Meine Welttour. So far no alternative has been found for a textbook as a central medium of the lesson. This means, however, that both teachers and students assess its form and contents and see its strengths and weaknesses. The results of this unrepresentative study may be of interest to teachers, but above all to authors of language textbooks and publications. It is they who eventually decide on the final shape of such books, whose contents have not only to respect the requirements of the core curriculum, but also respond to students’ communication and intellectual needs.

Essential in the process of teaching and learning German language is proper preparation for actual situations of the language use and at the same time sensitizing people to its possible variations. Although German has always been a pluricentric language and despite intensified linguistic research about its pluricentrizm, and numerous demands to take this fact into account, among others, in teaching or translation, its different varieties are still not treated equally. The main purpose of this article is a reflection on the extent to which in textbooks to teach the German language, including those created in Poland and addressed to the Polish audience, its national varieties are taken into account.

According to F. Relations between languages can take the form of interrelations or transrelations. Does the prestige of a particular language influence the motivation or demotivation for learning it? Which perspective (inter- or trans-) is adopted nowadays in Poland for teaching German as a foreign language?

The introduction of autonomy in Galicia meant  getting certain privileges  for the Poles living in this part of Austria-Hungary. The most import ant of these benefits was the introduction of the Polish language as an official language and the foundation of the National School Council – an institution which took over Vienna’s responsibility for organizing the education. This new situation required modifications within the teaching process of the German language, the status of which underwent a dramatic change from the main means of communication to one of the many school subjects. Not surprisingly, the direction and content of these modifications have been discussed for years. These discussions can be followed today by analyzing the magazine “Museum” – at that time one of the few Polish publications with pedagogical -didactic profile, which dealt with the problems in secondary education.

German Studies and German as a Foreign Language – yesterday and today
Literature and linguistics
Text Stylistics.
Opis:
In recent years, the “crisis of German studies” has become an increasingly current topic within academic discourse. This SUBJECT, more precisely defined as “legitimation crisis of traditional German studies”, has been long debated in Germany. Legitimation is a common principle in the fields of law, political science, and sociology. It refers to other principles such as ‘legitimity’ and ,justification’. Since the Nineties, the crisis in German literature studies appears to be rather an identity crisis, the origin of which can be seen in the centrifugal forces of attraction of several other disciplinary approaches. Something similar has happened – worldwide – in the field of German linguistics, and even in the branch of German as a Foreign Language teaching practice, due to the progressively increasing habit of providing the GFL-object with attributes specifying its specific purposes, for instance: German for Occupational Purposes, German for Business, German for Medical Purposes, for legal Professionals, Engineers, German for young, adult, senior learners etc. The question of which variety of German should be considered at the university level depends upon several factors, a simple answer is therefore not forthcoming. It is extremely important for the modern field of German studies especially within the “German as a Foreign Languagecountries”, that the object „GFL for humanistic purposes” be clearly defined, at least as a variety within the multiplicity of given alternatives.

It is repeatedly argued that this is due to the close proximity of the two languages. Therefore, Dutch GFL textbooks use both target and source language throughout. At the same time, both learners and teachers repeatedly state that too little German is spoken in GFL-teaching in the Netherlands. This paper discusses the target language use at schools in the Netherlands by critically analysing (a selection of) GFL teaching materials. And the situation of German teaching in general.

Since 2015 there has been increased protest action by students at South African universities. One of the issues is decolonizing the curriculum. Academics have been re-thinking the curricula of various academic offerings. Recognizing the African heritage of students studying German could be in the form of comparing the first language (L1) of black African learners with German in order to facilitate learning the target language (TL). Specific examples of similarities and differences between German and Zulu are addressed in this article.

A language biography is most often a reflection on one’s own linguistic development and therefore can be termed “language autobiography”. In its a broad sense, a language biography may include mother tongue acquisition, yet this article focuses solely on foreign language learning, with a special emphasis on the German language. The article provides insights into factors that motivate learners of German and into changes in these factors over a period of time, including the role of intercultural motivators. A theoretical and methodological introduction is followed by the results of a qualitative study conducted in five Polish institutions of tertiary education on a group of 73 students learning German. The excerpts of biographies quoted provide a picture of motivation as a dynamic process and moreover indicate that as present-day students get older, they are increasingly more thoughtful about their learning.

This paper discusses the issue of irrelevance of the aspect of the Polish verb. In specifi c contexts, the grammatical category of aspect, being obligatory in the Polish language, is in fact redundant. The identifi cation of such contexts (and hence review of the most important current observations and convictions in this respect), the attempt at ordering and describing them enabled systematic material research based on a (Polish–German and German–Polish) translation. The fi ndings presented in the paper might be a good starting point for a refl ection on the reasonability of including the described issue in curricula of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Due to its reach and frequency, the phenomenon of alternation of aspectual partners should be more frequently discussed in the literature dedicated to aspect and Polish glottodidactics.

In spite of that the pluricentricity of languages is hardly acknowledged – the effects can be seen in dictionaries, in programs of teaching at universities (literature, linguistics as well as translation studies), but above all in text books for students, where elements of pluricentricity are usually absent. This study investigates the position, content and pedagogy of Landeskunde in proficiency skills-focussed Dutch foreign language teaching. It analyses the course book used most frequently in Dutch secondary education for German as a foreign language: Neue Kontakte. This research examines the position of cultural content in course materials and in explicitly formulated learning goals. Moreover, it is investigated what cultural content is introduced and whether this is either integrated in language proficiency training and connected to the world of the learners. The results show that Neue Kontakte offers a broad range of cultural topics which are either linked to the Netherlands or Dutch or to the learners’ personal environment. Additionally, Landeskunde is integrated in language proficiency exercises. On the other hand, its status is considered weak; no cultural learning goals are formulated and hardly any repetition of cultural content and little critical reflection on the foreign and the own culture are observed.

This paper discusses the differences between teaching Dutch in Germany and German in the Netherlands, while considering the challenges teachers are confronted with, e.g. the lack of appropriate textbooks. In particular, the composition and method of some textbooks for Dutch and German are presented and evaluated with regard to their practicality in the classroom. It is striking that textbooks for German are written in Dutch, and that pupils even have to work out tasks in Dutch and not in the target language, while there is merely one textbook in Germany for school-based teaching, lacking a consideration of school types, age groups, and prior knowledge. Even though the conditions of neighbouring language teaching are particularly diverse, teachers on both sides are in urgent need of more innovative and improved teaching material which ensures that pupils are able to develop and improve their language skills, as well as their intercultural competences.

The following article relates to practising the didactics of multilingualism in teaching German as the second foreign language after English as the first foreign language. In the theoretic part an attempt was made to define a concept of multilingualism and to present the psycholinguistic background of the didactics of multilingualism. In addition, the tenets of the DaFnE concept that pertains to the above language constellation were presented. The practical part refers to an empirical study that was conducted among teachers of German in the area of Trójmiasto. The aim of the study was to investigate if and in which fields teachers of German practise the didactics of multilingualism using their knowledge of English, as well as their pupils’ command of this language.

This paper is a review of key aspects of complementary teaching of English and German as a foreign language i.e. according to the DaFnE (German after English) principle that means the sequential constellation of English as the first foreign language and German as the second one (tertiary language). It should be noted that this approach has been developed since the seventies of the twentieth century. From the statistical point of view, German is the second most commonly taught foreign language in Poland, preceded by English. Therefore it would be desirable to develop the DaFnE concept also in this country. The objective of the present paper is to show the advantages of the idea and available reference books in this regard.

Opis:
The current perspective of teaching German as a second or foreign language is very important in the context of teacher education reform. This article addresses the questions associated with the notion of interdisciplinarity in foreign language teaching and teacher education. The key question is how to prepare foreign language teachers for the difficult labor market. Two aspects are relevant to a future German teacher: one is professional knowledge on teaching German as a foreign language, the second is the knowledge and ability of teaching the second school subject.

Language is a multidimensional object of cognition, which is dealt with by many scientific disciplines with different research perspectives. Linguistics is particularly important, as it makes language its primary research subject and is undoubtedly seen as the leading discipline in comparison with other sciences interested in language. However, for them too, language is an important object of cognition in certain cognitive areas, studied and described from the point of view of disciplinarily specific logic, terminology and reference semantics. This article attempts to reflect on the role and usefulness of the results of German linguistics research for teaching German as a foreign language during German studies in Poland. Considerations are illustrated by an example of a standard spoken German as a subject of teaching in philological education in Poland.

Before 1989, the main foreign language being taught in Polish schools was Russian, due to the socio-political ties with Moscow. Second and third tier foreign languages were French and Ger-man. After the fall of communism, and especially after Poland joined the EU, the demand for English Translational Studies has grown significantly, at the cost of German programs. In this paper, the authoresses try to analyze the cultural foundations for these phenomena.

Opis:
The consequence of the European language policy and the implementation of its assumptions is the flow of glottodidactic thought, which encourages reflection on the organization of academic language education in various educational systems. Organization of language education at the law faculties in Poland and Germany is subject to dynamic transformations resulting, inter alia, from the need to adapt foreign language teaching to the requirements of the labour market. The ability to use several foreign languages and knowledge of other legal systems will allow future lawyers to practise in an international environment and is almost a requirement of the modern era, so it is worth considering how to organize the language education process in law faculties, aiming at the professionalization of education.

Refleksję nad rolą nauczycieli jako mediatorów interkulturowych kończy dyskusja nad możliwymi rozwiązaniami w zakresie rozwoju kompetencji międzykulturowych studentów języków obcych, zwłaszcza studentów filologii germańskiej i lingwistyki stosowanej.
This article intends to contribute to the academic debate on the role of a foreign language teacher as an intercultural mediator. Specifically, the authors present a critical overview of constitutive characteristics of an intercultural mediator. Furthermore, the authors discuss research on the state of intercultural competence of Polish teachers of German as a foreign language, both in pre-school education and in primary, secondary and higher education in Poland. This reflection on the role of teachers as (inter)cultural mediators concludes with a discussion of proposals for the development of intercultural competence of foreign language students, especially of students of German philology and applied linguistics.

The use of traditional German carols in German as a foreign language is very popular with both teachers and learners. The subject matter of Christmas and numerous practical solutions for the use of carols in language classes are also dealt with in numerous textbooks and practical literature.Modern teaching of German as a foreign language is oriented, among other things, towards teaching third (tertiary) languages, which is one of several possible conceptsfor teaching multilingualism. This article tries to answer the following questions: What is the historical background to traditional German carols? How can traditional German carols enrich the classes of German as a foreign language? What are the benefits of using traditional German carols? What are the characteristics of the teaching of third languages? How can elements of third language teaching be implemented in German language classes using traditional German carols? The article is accompanied by a practically tested glottodidactic material for the carol“Silent Night”, which in its concept refers to the assumptions of third languages didactics.

One of the main aims of uniting Europe is to create a common European culture of remembrance. To achieve this, different transnational projects are carried out, especially in historical sciences, but increasingly also in other disciplines such as pedagogy. This paper shows a new solution in teaching German as a foreign language at an academic level using the didactics of culture. The lesson unit discussed in this paper was developed within a bilateral project New models of didactics of culture. Polish-German realms of memory during a workshop which had been conducted by students of four universities (two Polish and two German), in order to design lessons curriculums. This article discusses how history and foreign language can be taught within an intercultural lesson unit which focuses on area studies.
