Opis:
We examined to what extend the rate and direction of changes in unmanaged grassland depend on fluctuations in climatic conditions. Vegetation data from permanent plots in a semi-natural grassland in southern Poland collected over 12 years were used. Relations between weather variables, time, and the cover of 41 more frequent species and 14 plant functional groups were analysed. The greatest effect on the dynamics of species and functional groups had precipitation in spring and/or early summer, particularly in the current year. The majority of plant groups were significantly affected also by the temperature in spring and early summer in one of the three previous years. During 12 years, the cover of annuals and biennials, short plants, and plants with small leaves decreased, while the cover of taller plants, plants with larger leaves, and with vegetative spread increased. The analyses suggest that these successional changes were not directly associated with climatic conditions but were affected by them indirectly through interspecific competition. The fluctuations in climatic conditions, chiefly precipitation, had a significant effect on both the composition and the rate of changes in abandoned grassland. The increase in the cover of tall perennial species with broad leaves hindered succession towards woodland despite of the presence of woods in the closed vicinity. It can be expected that during drier periods colonisation of grassland by later successional species could be easier.

The present study investigated the effect of the surface functional groups of nanosilica on the interfacial, crystallization, and thermal stability of polyamide 6/SiO2 (PA6/SiO2) nanocomposite, in which nanosilica was modified in situ with both 3-triethoxysilylpropylamine and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane¬ (KH-550 and KH-570). The FTIR analysis results showed the chemical bonding action between the reacting amino groups of nanosilica and end carboxyl groups of polyamide 6 enhanced with increasing the ratio of KH-550 and KH-570. The XRD spectrum indicated that the crystal structure of PA6/SiO2 nanocomposites tended to form α crystal type that was beneficial to an improvement of mechanical properties, and which was in agreement with the results of mechanical strength measurements. It was also found that crystallization temperature and crystallization rate of PA6/SiO2 nanocomposites were lower than that of neat polyamide 6.

A tri-functional NIMMO-THF copolyether (T-NT) was synthesized by polymerization of 3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane (NIMMO) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of trimethylolpropane and catalyzed by BF3·OEt2. The allyl urethane NIMMO-THF copolyether with three functional groups (AUT-NT) was synthesized from tri-functional NIMMO-THF copolyether and allyl isocyanate. The polymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. Furthermore, an elastomer that was prepared from allyl urethane NIMMO-THF copolyether with three functional groups and trimethylisophthalodinitrile oxide (TINO) had satisfactory mechanical properties and good thermal stability. The elastomer is expected to be used in composite solid propellants and polymer-bonded explosives (PBX).

The adsorption behavior of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in aqueous solutions on silica aerogels modified with amino propyl triethoxysilane was investigated as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbate concentration and adsorbent dose. It was found that maximum adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions occurs at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0, respectively. The optimum contact time to obtain equilibrium adsorption with the modified silica aerogel was experimentally found to be around 48h. Adsorption isotherms clearly indicated that the adsorption behavior of metals ions on the modified silica aerogels is fitted well with both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on modified silica aerogel were found to be 45.45mg/g and 35.71mg/g, respectively. The results indicated that silica aerogels modified with amino functional groups can be used as an efficient adsorbent in the removal of metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
The present study unfolds the diversity of ants of Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. A total of 22 species under 13 genera distributed over 5 subfamilies could be recorded. These include three newly recorded species namely Leisiota frauenfeldi (Mayr) (Formicinae), Crematogaster (Acrocoelia) hodgsoni Forel (Myrmicinae) and Brachyponera nigrita Emery (Ponerinae) from the state and nearly 90.5% of the reported species are new for the district (marked*). Analysis of their zoogeographical distribution reveals that the fauna apart from being Oriental also includes some Palaearctic (72.73%), Australian (13.63%) and Ethiopian (4.54%) elements. The dominant functional group is constituted by the Subordinate Camponotini (36.37%) followed by Generalized Myrmicinae (22.73%), Tropical Climate Specialist (13.63%), Specialist Predator (9.09%), Opportunist (9.09%) and Dominant Dolichorinae (9.09%). Ants are mostly prevalent during Monsoon (81.82%), followed by Postmonsoon (68.18%) and Premonsoon (50.00%). Two species namely Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus (Fabricius) and Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius) are recorded throughout the year. Ranking sequence of the most abundant species in descending order is: Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus (15.01%) = Oecophylla smaragdina (15.01%) > Crematogaster (Acrocoelia) hodgsoni (12.91%). Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) compressus and Oecophylla smaragdina are the most dominant species. Data also reveals that both core and buffer zones conjointly offer a better combination of habitat requirement, as 12 species are common in both the zones. Highest no. of species are recorded from leaf litter and ground combined together (22 species) and 6 species are arboreal in nature. Shannon’s Diversity Index (α diversity) and Simpson’s Diversity Index both are higher in buffer zone. This reflects the habitat exploitation efficiency of the encountered species. As per Jaccard Index (β diversity) the similarity value of both the zones is only 0.55.

Opis:
In the recent time there is an increase in the use of medicinal plants for treatment of ailments. This is owning to availability and low cost of herbal materials, which has increased the use of plants such as Viscum album for medicinal purposes. These plants may contain mineral elements, important phytochemicals and functional groups for healthy leaving, but increased use of this plant could lead to magnification of the mineral elements. Therefore, leaves of mistletoe (Viscum album) harvested from kola nut tree (Cola nitida) in Imo state, South Eastern Nigeria was studied. The study was aimed at determining the elemental content, phytochemicals as well as Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) analysis of petroleum ether and chloroform extract of Viscum album harvested from Cola nitida. The sample for elemental analysis was digested with mixture of concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) and perchloric acid (HClO4). Petroleum ether and chloroform were used as solvents to extract the sample used for phytochemical and FTIR analysis. Elemental content analysis indicates that Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn were present at varying concentrations. The elemental content is in the order Fe > Mn > Cu > Mg >Zn > Cr > Ca. The presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, saponins and tannins were confirmed by the phytochemical screening. FTIR analysis indicates that alcohols, amides, aromatics and carbonyl compounds are present in the chloroform and petroleum ether extract of Viscum album harvested from cola nitida, though at different intensities. The presence of some essential minerals as well as some phytochemicals and some important functional groups must have necessitated the use of this plant for medicinal purposes.

Opis:
Direct and indirect effects of crustacean zooplankton (cladocerans and copepods) are important regulators of ciliate communities, especially in eutrophic systems. However, it is not clear whether pseudodiaptomids (e.g., Schmackeria), one of the dominant calanoid copepods in Chinese lakes, effectively impacts natural ciliate communities. The impacts of small-bodied cladocerans (e.g., Bosmina) on ciliates are also controversial. We performed an incubation experiment using winter lake water from Lake Chaohu to assess the structuring effects that crustacean zooplankton have on natural ciliate populations. The presence and absence of cladocerans (Bosmina sp.) and copepods (Schmackeria inopinus) were alternated in four treatments. Both Bosmina sp. and Schmackeria inopinus had substantial impacts on ciliate abundance, biomass, and community structure. The response of ciliates was different in the presence of Bosmina sp. compared with Schmackeria inopinus and varied among categories such as the ciliate population, relative body size and functional feeding group. Our results also highlight the importance of interference and exploitative competition among metazooplankton groups.

The effects of oxygen-containing functional groups on the structure and dynamic properties of water molecules near a lignite surface were investigated through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Because of its complex composition and structure, a graphite surface containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups was used to represent the lignite surface model. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results, the composing proportion of hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl is 21:13:6. The density profiles of oxygen and hydrogen atoms indicate that the brown coal surface characteristics influence the structural and dynamic properties of water molecules. The interfacial water is much more ordered than bulk water. The results of the radial distribution functions, mean square displacements, and local self-diffusion coefficients for the water molecules in the vicinity of three oxygen-containing functional groups confirmed that carboxyl groups are the preferential adsorption sites.

Oxidation reactions belong to the group of the most commonly used processes in both organic and inorganic chemistry. The main issues in such transformation are usually safe handling of the oxidants as well as waste generation. Peroxymonosulfuric acid is one of the strongest oxidants. It was described for the first time in 1898 by Heinrich Caro. Nowadays, the commercial sources of KHSO5 are low-cost industrial bulk chemicals, e.g., the triple salt Oxone® (2KHSO5· KHSO4·K2SO4). These products are stable oxidizing agents commonly used in fine chemicals synthesis, and are easy to handle, non-toxic as well as generate non-polluting by-products. Over the past several years the scope of its use has extended. One of the most important transformation that have been made possible with the use of Oxone® are epoxidation and ketone formation. Epoxides and ketones are important synthetic building blocks widely used in the chemical industry for the production of pharmaceutical products, flavours, fragrances, resins, adhesives and paints. The use of Oxone® was demonstrated in several combinations both in classical methods that involved metal catalysis as well as in novel approaches with the use of microwaves and ionic liquids. Over the past 20 years, ionic liquids, together with supercritical fluids and water, have become powerful alternatives to conventional organic solvents. Ionic liquids are salts having in the structure an organic cation and an inorganic or organic anion, with a melting point below 100°C. The advantage of using ionic liquids is a big variety of available structures. Combinations of both ionic liquids and Oxone® offer an interesting alternative to classical oxidation methods used in industry.

The literature devoted to numerical investigation of adsorption of heavy metal ions on carbon nanotubes is scarce. In this paper molecular dynamics is used to simulate the adsorption process and to investigate the effect of the infl uencing parameters on the rate of adsorption. The predictions of the molecular dynamics simulation show that the adsorption process is improved with increasing the temperature, pH of solution, the mass of nanotubes, and surface modifi cation of CNT using hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups. The results predicted by the model are compared with the experimental results available in the literature; the close agreement validates the accuracy of the predictions. This study reveals that the water layers around the carbon nanotubes and the interaction energies play important roles in the adsorption process. The study also shows that electrostatic force controls the attraction of zinc ions on the nanotube sidewall.

Low-rank coals are difficult to float using common hydrocarbon oily collectors, such as dodecane and diesel. In this investigation, a mixture of dodecane and n-valeraldehyde was used as a collector to enhance low-rank coal flotation. The changes of the contact angle and surface functional groups of low-rank coal were measured before and after different collectors’ adsorption to indicate its absorption mechanism. Surface tension of different collectors was also measured to identify its spreading performance. The results showed that the flotation performance using the mixture as a collector was much better than that using dodecane or n-valeraldehyde solely. When used the mixture of dodecane and n-valeraldehyde as collector, dodecane primarily covers the hydrophobic sites while n-valeraldehyde primarily covered the hydrophilic sites by hydrogen bond promoting adsorption of dodecane at these sites. There existed synergistic effect between dodecane and n-valeraldehyde. Additionally, n-valeraldehyde can reduce the surface tensions to improve the spreading performance of mixed collector on low-rank coal surface. The improvement both in adsorption and spreading was responsible for the enhancement of low-rank coal flotation by using the mixture.

The application of molecular phylogenetics to research on protists has substantially transformed our understanding of their evolution and systematics. More recently, advances in molecular technology, including high throughput sequencing, has opened new avenues for genomic analyses that elucidate major aspects of protistan biology across all levels of biological organization from cellular to ecosystems. This is a review of recent advances (particularly in the last two decades) of transcriptomic research on heterotrophic and autotrophic protists within three major topics: (i) Physiology and metabolism, (ii) Development and life cycles, and (iii) Environmental and ecological studies. Emphasis is placed on selection of representative research that highlights findings across diverse taxonomic groups within each of the three topics. Examples are drawn from parasitic as well as free-living taxa to provide a broad overview of some of the research strategies, and major findings, that have emerged from application of transcriptomics and related techniques in advancing our understanding of protistan biology.

Two series of functionalised carbonaceous adsorbents were prepared by means of oxidation and nitrogenation of commercially available activated carbon and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effect of nitrogen and oxygen incorporation on the textural, surface, thermal and sorption properties of the adsorbents prepared was tested. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen sorption, thermogravimetric study and determination of the surface oxygen groups content. Sorptive properties of the materials obtained were characterized by the adsorption of methylene and alkali blue 6B as well as copper(II) ions. The final products were nitrogen- and oxygen-enriched mesoporous adsorbents of medium-developed surface area, showing highly diverse N and O-heteroatom contents and acidic-basic character of the surface. The results obtained in our study have proved that through a suitable choice of the modification procedure of commercial adsorbents it is possible to produce materials with high sorption capacity towards organic dyes as well as copper(II) ions.

The oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFG) on the coal surface affect the adsorption effect of hydrocarbon oily collectors (HOC). An investigation of the interaction between the HOC and OCFG in the absence and presence of water is conducive to understanding the effect of OCFG type on the adsorption of HOC on the coal surface. In this paper, FTIR analysis was used to analyze the OCFG type of coal surface. The adsorption behavior of HOC on different OCFG surfaces was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated the presence of OCFG such as -OH, -COOH, -C=O, and -COCH3 on the coal surface. In conditions without water, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -COOH > -C=O > -OH > -COCH3. In an aqueous solution, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -C=O>-COCH3>-OH>-COOH. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of OCFG is the key factor that affects the adsorption effect of HOC. In other words, the adsorption effect of HOC on the coal surface in an aqueous solution does not depend on the strength of the interaction between the OCFG and HOC in the absence of water, but on the hydrophilicity of the OCFG. The -COOH and -OH on the coal surface are not conducive to the adsorption of HOC onto the coal surface. Masking the -COOH and -OH of the coal surface is beneficial in improving the coal flotation performance with HOC as a collector.

Opis:
Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has been subjected to numerous chemical modifications which were undertaken in order to improve its properties, the use of PVC in new applications and understanding of PVC-related phenomena. This work describes the chemical modification of PVC by amino groups (benzylamine and diethylenetriamine) through nucleophilic substitution reactions of its chlorine atoms to obtain P1 polymer. The modified polymer was subsequently reticulated with dichlorodiethyl ether to obtain P2 polymer. The obtained polymers were characterized using infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (CHN), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The modified polymers (P1 and P2) were tested for metal ion extraction (cadmium, cobalt, lead, or chromium) using the solid-phase extraction (SPE) method and the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) technique. Quantitative adsorption measurements were performed using solutions containing 2 • 10-4M of heavy metal ions with pH = 3.5–4.5 at a flow rate of 0.6 dm3/min. The new extractants based on modified PVC (P1 and P2) were able to remove the negative effects of heavy metals contained in aqueous solutions. For Pb2+, the extraction percentage was 98 % using P1 and 90.3 % using P2.
Przeprowadzono chemiczną modyfikację poli(chlorku winylu) (PVC) w reakcji nukleofilowego podstawienia atomów chloru grupami aminowymi (benzyloamina i dietylenotriamina). Otrzymany polimer P1 szczepiono następnie eterem dichlorodietylowym – uzyskano polimer P2. Wytworzone polimery scharakteryzowano za pomocą spektroskopii w podczerwieni (FT-IR), analizy elementarnej (CHN), różnicowej kalorymetrii skaningowej (DSC), analizy termograwimetrycznej (TGA), różnicowej analizy termicznej (DTA) i dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej (XRD). Polimery P1 i P2 testowano w procesie ekstrakcji jonów metali (kadmu, kobaltu, ołowiu lub chromu), stosując ekstrakcję w fazie stałej (SPE) imetodę atomowej spektrometrii emisyjnej z plazmą wzbudzaną indukcyjnie (ICP-AES).

Anaerobic digestates are used as organic fertilizers; however, they are suspected to interfere negatively with soils. To investigate the relevance of the anaerobic digestates composition on potential wettability and contact angle of the soil, we mixed in a laboratory experiment 30 m³ ha-1 of anaerobic digesta-tes derived from mechanically pre-treated substrates from maizeand sugar beet with a homogenized Cambic Luvisol. Fourier trans-form infrared-spectra and diffuse reflectance infrared Fouriertransform-spectra of particle intact and finely ground soil-anaerobic digestates-mixtures were analyzed to determine the quantities of hydrophobic functional groups in the soil-anaerobic digestates-mixtures that are used here as an indicator for the potential hydrophobicity. The anaerobic digestates application increased the amount of hydrophobic functional groups of the mixtures and reduced the wettability of the soil. However, for intact particle samples an up to threefold higher amount of hydrophobic groups was found as compared to the finely ground ones, indicating a dilution effect of mechanical grinding on the effectivity of the organic matter that is presumably located as a coating on mineral soil particles. For the particle intact samples, the intensity of hydrophobic functional groups bands denoting hydrophobic brickstones in organic matter is indicative for the actual wettability of the soil-anaerobic digestates-mixtures.

Opis:
Plant functional traits are any morphological, physiological and phenological features, which indirectly affect plant fitness through their three basic components of plant individual performance - growth, reproduction and survival. These features represent also a keystone for plant functional groups, which are similar in three aspects - function on the level of organism, response to environmental factors and effect on ecosystems. Functional approach in ecology and vegetation study enables to evaluate plant communities on the base of species function in a community, and to relate functional structure of plant communities to particular environmental gradients. Species plasticity has many aspects that mirror species adaptations to the environmental conditions and which then also translate into functional structuring of plant communities. This approach is thus a novel and exciting mode how to carry on plant ecology, both in research and education at universities.
Podejście funkcjonalne w ekologii i w badaniach roślin umożliwia ocenę zbiorowisk roślinnych w oparciu o funkcje gatunków w społeczności i odniesienie funkcjonalnej struktury zbiorowisk roślinnych do poszczególnych gradientów środowiskowych.

Opis:
Poly(glycidyl azide) (GAP) is a synthetic polymer with energetic properties due to the presence of an azide group in its structure. It is used in industry primarily as a component of binders for rocket fuel. Classically produced GAP has secondary hydroxyl groups, which react much more slowly with the crosslinking agents diisocyanates found in high-energy materials. It has been confirmed that methods can be used which modify the structure of GAP thereby obtaining a polymer with an increased number of functional groups. Furthermore, such processes produce a polymer with more desirable primary hydroxyl groups. Using such a polymer is economically advantageous and allows easier control of processes using GAP. Attempts were made to obtain such a modified polymer. The polymers obtained were subjected to FTIR analysis, viscosity measurements and hydroxyl group values.
Otrzymane polimery poddano analizie FTIR, pomiaru lepkości i wartości grupy hydroksylowej.

The influence of the edge effect on the meadow vegetation pattern was studied in the forest glades in the central part of the Middle Sudety Mts. (SW Poland). The spectacular edge effect is seen in the range of 4 m from the forest border towards the center of the glades. Within that belt we observed decrease in tree and bush species number, increase in share of graminoids and Fabaceae species, as well as increase in share of species generally related to grassland communities. A significant increase in species number and values of Shannon−Wiener diversity index was noticed within the distance of eight meters from the edges of glades.

Temporomandibular disorders affect from 5 to 12 percent of the population, occurring almost twice as often in women than in men. The painful form of temporomandibular disorders is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders causing pain. The chronic form is associated with changes in activity of the masticatory muscles and can lead to sleep problems, reduction of emotional state and worsening of quality of life. Methods: 66 women were included in the study group. The study was composed of a clinical evaluation of temporomandibular disorders and assessment of the masticatory muscle activities using surface electromyography. The anterior part of the temporalis muscle and the superficial part of the masseter muscle were evaluated during teeth clenching on cotton rolls. The symmetric activity index was calculated from the results of electromyographic activity. Based on the activity and symmetric activity index values, subjects were qualified to the risk group of temporomandibular disorders. Results: Twenty people (30.3 percent) qualified for the temporomandibular disorders risk group. In the temporomandibular disorders risk group, the mean symmetric activity index value of the anterior part of the temporal muscle was 72.6 percent and the mean electromyographic activity was 143.94 microvolts. In the masseter muscle, the mean symmetric activity index value was 67.7 percent and the mean electromyographic activity was 155.33 microvolts. Conclusions: Temporomandibular disorders may develop in 30.3 percent of examined women. The research should be continued to determine the temporomandibular disorders risk group, which may enable for the appropriate prevention of the development of dysfunctions in the stomatognathic system.

A new tris-spiro-(3,4-dioxybenzaldehyde)cyclotriphosphazene [PNCHO] was synthesized from the condensation of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene with 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of strong base. Further reaction of the trialdehydic cyclotriphosphazene based molecules [PNCHO] with three different dianilines (benzidine, 4,4’-methylenedianiline and 4,4′-Sulfonyldianiline) resulted in creation of a new poly(tris-spiro-3,4-dioxbenzene)cyclotriphosphazenes with Schiff-base groups [PNSB1-3]. The structures of [PNCHO] and the polycyclotriphosphazenes-schiff base derivatives were characterized by means of FTIR, 1H, 13C NMR and C.H.N elemental analysis. Differential scanning calorimetery (DSC) revealed a relatively high glass transition temperature (135−175°C) of obtained polymers. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) exhibited their good thermal stability (up to 375°C). The char yield was about 36–42% at 700°C. All polymers were self-extinguishable as the LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index) values were above 26% and this meets with the V-0 and V-1, classification (UL-94). No fumes, soot, or toxic gases emission were observed during burning. The polymers obtained can be used as environmentally friendly, flame-retardant materials.
Nowy tris-spiro-(3,4-dioksybenzaldehydo)cyklotrifosfazen [PNCHO] zsyntetyzowano w procesie kondensacji heksachlorocyklotrifosfazenu z 3,4-dihydroksybenzaldehydem w obecności silnej zasady. W wyniku reakcji trialdehydo cyklotrifosfazenów z trzema różnymi dianilinami (benzydyna, 4,4’-metylenodianilina i 4,4’-sulfonylodianilina) otrzymano poli(tris-spiro-3,4-dioksabenzeno)cyklotrifosfazeny z zasadami Schiffa [PNSB1-3]. PNCHO i pochodne policyklotrifosfazen-zasady Schiffa scharakteryzowano za pomocą analizy elementarnej (C, H, N), FTIR, 1H, 13C NMR. Metodą różnicowej kalorymetrii skaningowej (DSC) wykazano wysoką temperaturę zeszklenia (135−175°C) otrzymanych polimerów. Metodą analizy termograwimetrycznej (TGA) potwierdzono ich dobrą stabilność termiczną (do 375°C). Stopień zwęglenia po spaleniu wynosił w temp. 700°C ok. 36–42%.

The electronic interaction of hydroxyl groups with Fe(100) surface is modelled using a density functional theory (DFT) approach. The adsorption energies and structures of possible adsorption sites are calculated. According to our calculations of the adsorption energies, the interaction between oxygen atom of OH species and surface iron atom is shown to be strong. It is likely to be due to the interaction of the lone-pair electrons of oxygen and the 3d orbital electrons of iron atom. At low coverage (0.25ML), the most favorable adsorption sites are found to be two-fold bridge sites, and the orientation of the O-H bond is tilted to the surface normal. Further, the adsorption energy is found to be decreasing with the increasing OH group coverage.
