This paper was inspired by the works of Chiappinelli ([3]) and Schmitt and Smith ([7]). We study the problem ℒu = λau + f(·,u,u',u'',u''') with separated boundary conditions on [0,π], where ℒ is a composition of two operators of Sturm-Liouville type. We assume that the nonlinear perturbation f satisfies the inequality |f(x,u,u',u'',u''')| ≤ M|u|. Because of the presence of f the considered equation does not in general have a linearization about 0. For this reason the global bifurcation theorem of Rabinowitz ([5], [6]) is not applicable here. We use the properties of Leray-Schauder degree to establish the existence of nontrivial solutions and describe their location. The results obtained are similar to those proved by Chiappinelli for Sturm-Liouville operators.

An optimal control problem is considered where the state of the system is described by a variational inequality for the operator w → εΔ²w - φ(‖∇w‖²)Δw. A set of nonnegative functions φ is used as a control region. The problem is shown to have a solution for every fixed ε > 0. Moreover, the solvability of the limit optimal control problem corresponding to ε = 0 is proved. A compactness property of the solutions of the optimal control problems for ε > 0 and their relation with the limit problem are established. This type of operator arises in the theory of nonlinear plates, and the choice of a most suitable function φ is of interest for applications [2]. The problem of control of the function w has been studied in [4] for the operator under consideration, and some statements of this work will be used. Nonstationary problems with analogous operators were analyzed in [6,7]. Some general results on control of second-order variational inequalities can be found in [1]. The first section of this paper deals with the control problem for our fourth-order operator, the second considers a second-order operator, and the third studies the relationship between the solutions of the two problems.

We have extended a previous calculation of the energy of a weakly heterogeneous waveguide to fourth order in the density perturbation, deriving its general expression. For particular configurations where the second and third orders both vanish, we discover that the fourth order contribution lowers in general the energy of the state, below the threshold of the continuum. In these cases the waveguide possesses a localized state. We have applied our general formula to a solvable model with vanishing second and third orders reproducing the exact expression for the fourth order.

In this paper, we discuss a method of auxiliary controlled models and its application to solving some robust control problems for a system described by differential equations. As an illustration, a system of nonlinear differential equations of the fourth order is used. A solution algorithm, which is stable with respect to informational noise and computational errors, is presented. The algorithm is based on a combination of online state/input reconstruction and feedback control methods.

In fractional calculus, the fractional differential equation is physically and theoretically important. In this article an efficient numerical process has been developed. Numerical solutions of the time fractional fourth order reaction diffusion equation in the sense of Caputo derivative is obtained by using the implicit method, which is a finite difference method and is developed by increasing the number of iterations. The advantage of the implicit difference scheme is unconditionally stable. The stability analysis and convergency have been proven. A numerical example has been presented, and the validity of the method is supported by tables and graphics.

A class of fourth-order neutral type difference equations with quasidifferences and deviating arguments is considered. Our approach is based on studying the considered equation as a system of a four-dimensional difference system. The sufficient conditions under which the considered equation has no quickly oscillatory solutions are given. Finally, the sufficient conditions under which the equation is almost oscillatory are presented.

The fourth order periodic boundary value problem $u^{(4)} - m⁴u + F(t,u) = 0$, 0 < t < 2π, with $u^{(i)}(0) = u^{(i)}(2π)$, i = 0,1,2,3, is studied by using the fixed point index of mappings in cones, where F is a nonnegative continuous function and 0 < m < 1. Under suitable conditions on F, it is proved that the problem has at least two positive solutions if m ∈ (0,M), where M is the smallest positive root of the equation tan mπ = -tanh mπ, which takes the value 0.7528094 with an error of $±10^{-7}$.

We study the multiplicity of weak solutions to the following fourth order nonlinear elliptic problem with a p(x)-biharmonic operator [formula] where Ω is a smooth bounded domain in RN, [formula] is the p(x)-biharmonic operator, and λ > 0 is a parameter. We establish sufficient conditions under which there exists a positive number λ* such that the above problem has at least two nontrivial weak solutions for each λ > λ*. Our analysis mainly relies on variational arguments based on the mountain pass lemma and some recent theory on the generalized Lebesgue-Sobolev spaces [formula].

The functional |c₄ + pc₂c₃ + qc³₂| is considered in the class of all univalent holomorphic functions $f(z) = z + ∑^{∞}_{n=2} c_n z^n$ in the unit disk. For real values p and q in some regions of the (p,q)-plane the estimates of this functional are obtained by the area method for univalent functions. Some new regions are found where the Koebe function is extremal.

This paper was inspired by the works of P. H. Rabinowitz. We study nonlinear eigenvalue problems for some fourth order elliptic partial differential equations with nonlinear perturbation of Rabinowitz type. We show the existence of an unbounded continuum of nontrivial positive solutions bifurcating from (μ₁,0), where μ₁ is the first eigenvalue of the linearization about 0 of the considered problem. We also prove the related theorem for bifurcation from infinity. The results obtained are similar to those proved by Rabinowitz for second order elliptic partial differential equations ([5]-[7]). The methods used are based, in principle, on the results of [1], [5], [6].

Global well-posedness and finite time blow up issues for some strongly damped nonlinear wave equation are investigated in the present paper. For subcritical initial energy by employing the concavity method we show a finite time blow up result of the solution. And for critical initial energy we present the global existence, asymptotic behavior and finite time blow up of the solution in the framework of the potential well. Further for supercritical initial energy we give a sufficient condition on the initial data such that the solution blows up in finite time.

In this paper, a boundary integral method is proposed for the solution of a class of fourth-order two-boundary value problems described by the equation yiv+P(x, y, y, y’’, y’’’) = 0, x ∈ ( 0,L), where P is a polynomial function of its arguments. The differential equation is cast in an integral form and the weighted residual technique is used to generate the corresponding boundary integral equations. The boundary integral equations are then, solved by expressing the dependent variable, y, in terms of a power series. The proposed method is tested through four examples to show the applicability of the method to solve a wide range of fourth-order differential equations including the nonlinear ones.

In this paper, we study a series of fourth-order strain wave equations involving dissipative structure, which appears in elasto-plastic-microstructure models. By some differential inequalities, we derive the finite time blow up results and the estimates of the upper bound blowup time with arbitrary positive initial energy. We also discuss the influence mechanism of the linear weak damping and strong damping on blowup time, respectively.
