This article introduces readers to the problems of mental predisposition for driving a vehicle. It discusses necessary physical and mental abilities which drivers need to behave appropriately during constantly changing road situations. The meaning of those tests for road safety prophylaxis is stressed. The author underlines the special significance of bringing back on 1st January 2004 periodic psychological tests for drivers. Their results are crucial – also for the drivers – in assessing their physical and mental capabilities, which change.

Despite the considerable amount of research on the behaviour of drivers in road traffic the problem of defying psychological and physical features of a good driver is still exactly unsolved. Apart from physical features, which limit or preclude from operating a car, there are psychological traits, which influence drivers’ behaviour. Taking into account three basic aspects of proficiency in driving: physical fitness (determined during the medical examination), mental attitude (determined during the psychological examinations testing of mental predisposition for driving a vehicle), knowledge, skill and attitude of a driver. The mental traits seem to be even more important than physical fitness, knowledge or divers’ skills. This article presents, in particular, reasons for and predictors of risky behaviours in road traffic with a focus on variables of personality features, which potentially are the reason for hazardous behaviour. The results showed the existence of statistically significant differences in temperament and type of psychological gender between drivers demonstrating a tendency to risky behaviour on the road and those who do not have such tendencies. Also the analyses of the researches had given numerous interesting conclusions on relations between personality differences of drivers who like to take risk and the ones who do not have such inclinations. Additionally, the differences of character in the aspect of evaluating behaviours as risky were presented.

Driving a car is a task demanding particular competencies, which include: knowledge, skills and specific personality and mental traits. Every driver should posses: knowledge about traffic law regulations, practical skills of driving a vehicle, ability to predict traffic situations and, what is especially important, self-diagnosis ability. Those skills determine driving safety. Paper presents dangerous and aggressive driving behaviour on the roads. It describes characteristic features of drivers and type of offenses committed by them, as well as recognition of the scale and reasons for aggression in the road traffic. Paper includes detailed research results analyses of aggressive behaviour and its evaluation by road traffic controllers - police (408 persons), and by drivers participating in the demerit points reduction scheme (504 persons). Survey results indicate that drivers consciously break traffic law, underestimate danger, overestimate their own abilities, feel unpunished and they don't know traffic regulations well. All results shows that aggression is a frequent problem, especially concerning 18-39 year old group with wrong attitudes towards others road users. Importance of psychological testing of drivers, necessity of psycho-educational and preventive actions was pointed out in view of these circumstances. Research has allowed determining psychological reasons of the drivers' attitude and behaviour. Conclusions suggest undertaking activities and campaigns whose purpose is to change dangerous attitudes and habits and create re-education systems for the drivers who regularly break road traffic regulations.

Taxi driving is a primary occupation for immigrants to New York City. Driving a cab in New York City, the home of a substantial majority of American cabbies is nearly a rite of passage for newly arrived male immigrants. For generations Americans have believed that the job helped an immigrant to learn the city, acculturate to American mores, earn sufficient cash to secure a better occupation, and ultimately insure that his sons will not have to wrestle a steering wheel twelve hours or more a day. During the 1950s that dream sometimes became a reality. More recently, cab drivers spend their work lives pushing a hack through the city streets. Still would-be cab drivers come from all over the world to push a hack in New York City. In this article, I will indicate how New Yorkers and cab drivers themselves perceive the trade as composed of aliens, criminals, acculturating new Americans, in identity politics or as part of a multicultural mosaic, and today as proletarians.

Driver's profession is covered by the group of difficult and dangerous jobs. This kind of jobs requires the particular psychophysiological human abilities. The main categories of driver's fatigue, theirs reasons and the effect of driver's fatigue for safety driving as well as the principles of driver's fatigue prevention are presented in paper.

The paper presents issues related to determination of the driver's reaction time. A brief review of methods for determining the reaction time of drivers has been conducted. The results of own researches on the reaction time of drivers in pre-accident situations have been presented. The scenario of an accident situation according to which they were conducted has been presented. The presentation includes results of measurements of the reaction time set in the three test environments: on a test track, in a driving simulator and on the psychological aptitude test stand. A comparison of the obtained reaction time values has been conducted and the correlation between them has been determined.
W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia związane z wyznaczaniem czasu reakcji kierowcy. Przeprowadzono krótki przegląd metod wyznaczania czasu reakcji kierowców. Zaprezentowano wyniki własnych badań dotyczących czasu reakcji kierowców w sytuacjach przedwypadkowych. Omówiono scenariusz sytuacji wypadkowej, według którego zostały one przeprowadzone. Przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów czasu reakcji wyznaczone w trzech środowiskach badawczych: na torze badawczym, w symulatorze jazdy samochodem oraz na stanowisku do badań psychotechnicznych. Dokonano porównania otrzymanych wartości czasu reakcji i wyznaczono korelacje pomiędzy nimi.

This paper aims to improve understanding of the drivers and barriers to digital transformation in asset management. Accordingly, this paper contributes to the literature by conducting a qualitative Delphi study with 15 experts (including academia, consultancy and industry) to identify, validate, and classify the drivers and barriers affecting digital transformation in asset management. As a result of the experts’ interactions, 20 barriers were identified. The main barriers to digital transformation in asset management are the following: Misunderstanding of the strategic importance of asset management, no clear vision/strategy, existing mindset and culture, inadequate asset management system, lack of understanding of digital trends, and lack of employee knowledge and skills. The study also highlights 12 drivers that are critical to the digital transformation of asset management. These include cost reductions, opportunities in condition monitoring of assets, expected benefits in asset management processes, expected benefits in risk management and others.

A pilot project ..Investment in Safety. Reeducation of drivers - methodology, human resources, effectiveness" was conducted between November 2007 and April 2008. The project was a joint task of National Road Safety Council, Polish Educational Group "Educativ" and chosen Regional Drivers' Examination Centres. Methodological support was provided by Motor Transport Institute. The aim of the project was road safety improvement by increasing competences and abilities of employees of Regional Drivers' Examination Centres responsible for reeducation courses for drivers violating traffic laws. Fifty two participants were engaged in the project - psychologists, policemen and organizers of the courses for traffic law violators. A series of trainings consisted of conference meetings and regional workshops. Participants obtained a certificate by passing the final test. The exam was organized in an online form and in that aspect it was an experiment. Each participant received a disposable login in order to access an examination program located on an indicated web page. Admission to the exam was possible anytime within two particular days. Test consisted of 50 randomly selected questions arranged in a three-choice format with one, two or three correct answers. Time for each question was limited. Analysis confirms usefulness of network instruments in knowledge verification, especially in the presence of territorially dispersed participants of training courses. Statistical data about user choices and answering time were gathered, showing correlation of answers and making possible detailed analysis of questions and feedback-driven future training improvement.

A cooperative society has remained a major concern especially in the developing countries like Nigeria. This study was born out of necessity to provide answers to fundamental questions raised on cooperatives societies. The objectives of this research was to ascertain the significant relationship between growth drivers and cooperative societies and to investigate significant relationship between cooperative societies and growth drivers such as interest rate, savings plan and to determine if amount borrowed has assisted to increase welfare and satisfaction of members. The primary data was gathered using structured questionnaire. The survey method was used and a cross-sectional design was adopted. The two institution chosen are the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), and Covenant University (CU). Total population of the selected cooperative society in FUNAAB is 573 and the total population of the selected cooperative society in CU is 697. The data was analysed using statistical package for the social sciences, (SPSS). It also made use of analysis of variance (ANOVA), Simple linear regression analysis was used to test hypotheses one and correlation analysis was employed to test hypothesis two. The study indicate that interest rate of cooperative societies is a significant predictor of patronage of the cooperative, it was revealed that there exist a relationship between loan repayment periods, savings plan and the satisfaction of members of the cooperative The study recommended the need for the improvement in the performance of the cooperative societies.

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of obesity, alcoholic beverage consumption, unhealthy alcohol use and sudden sleep onset at the wheel among Italian truck drivers. In addition to prevalence rates, this study also aimed at investigating potential predictors for sudden-onset sleepiness and obesity. Material and Methods A sample of truck drivers was extracted from the database of the High Risk Professional Driver Study. Data concerning demographics, anthropometry, medical information and working conditions were collected using anonymous questionnaires. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of the reported body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption and sudden sleep onset with working conditions and general lifestyle factors. Results Three hundred and thirty-five questionnaires were collected. According to their BMI, 45% of the participants were overweight and 21.4% of them were obese. Twenty-four point two percent declared they drank alcoholic beverages during working hours or work breaks and 21.3% of the drivers had an Alcohol Use Disorders Identyfication Test Consumption (AUDIT C) score ≥ 5 (the threshold value for unhealthy alcohol use). Forty-one point six percent of the interviewees experienced one episode of sudden sleep onset at the wheel per month (5.5% per week and 0.9% daily). Predictive factors for obesity were: length of service (odds ratio (OR) = 1.09, confidence interval (95% CI): 1.04–1.15, p < 0.001) and the AUDIT C total score (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.08–1.66, p = 0.008). Predictive factors for sudden-onset sleepiness at the wheel were: age > 55 years old (OR = 5.22, 95% CI: 1.29–21.1, p = 0.020), driving more than 50 000 km per year (OR = 2.89, 95% CI: 1.37–6.11, p = 0.006) and the Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ) score > 11 (adjusted OR = 2.97, 95% CI: 1.22–7.21, p = 0.016). Conclusions This study strongly emphasizes the need for intervention in order to reduce and prevent important risk factors for the sake of road safety and truck drivers’ health.

Kierując pojazdem w ruchu drogowym kierowca znajduje się w systemie wzajemnych oddziaływań różnych, innych - poza min samym - czynników ruchu drogowego. Każdy z tych czynników może być źródłem stresu kierowcy uczestniczącego w danym momencie w ruchu drogowym. To, czy dany czynnik będzie źródłem stresu zależy m.in. od tego, jak dana sytuacja zostanie oceniona przez kierowcę (podejście interakcyjne do stresu). Reakcja stresowa pojawia się wtedy, gdy kierowca sam określi swoją sytuację w ruchu drogowym jako zagrażającą, przekraczającą jego możliwości. Badani, w opracowanej do celów niniejszego badania ankiecie określali, co według nich jest stresem, podawali własne rozumienie pojęcia, a następnie byli proszeni o wskazanie źródeł stresu kierowcy związanych z uczestnictwem w ruchu drogowym lub pracy na stanowisku kierowcy i zaznaczenie jego natężenia na skal 1-10. Badania przeprowadzone w Instytucie Transportu Samochodowego zostały uzupełnione o przeprowadzone w ramach pracy magisterskiej badania nad źródłami stresu motorniczych tramwajów miejskich w Warszawie. Wyniki badań wykazały, zgodnie z interakcyjna teorią stresu, że w zasadzie nie ma uniwersalnych stresorów. To co stanowi źródło stresu dla kierujących w miejskim ruchu drogowym zależy od roli, w jakiej w ruchu drogowym występuje.
Driving a vehicle in the road traffic the driver is situated in the system of the interactions, different from himself. Each of these factors can be the source of the stress of the driver participating the given moment in the traffic. The factor can be a source of the stress in dependence of the evaluation of the given situation by the driver (interactive approach to the stress). The stress reaction appears then, when the driver himself qualifies his situation in the road movement as threatens, exceeding his capabilities. The volunteers, tested in the inquiry, determined what was the stress in their opinion, they defined their own understanding of the notion, and then they were asked for the indication of the sources of the driver stress connected with participation in road movement or work on the driver position and mark of his intensity on scales 1 - 10.

Objectives: A high percentage of professional drivers (PDs) often report feeling fatigue during their work, and falling asleep at the wheel (FAW) is a major contributing factor to the occurrence of near-miss or actual accidents. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of FAW among Italian PDs and the effect of fatigue on this occurrence (corrected for the main predictive factors already known). Material and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire survey. Data from PDs (N = 497) were used for analyses. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of reported sudden-onset sleep at the wheel with working conditions and general lifestyle factors. Results: Forty-one percent of the interviewees experienced at least 1 episode per month of sudden-onset sleep at the wheel (4.7% per week). Predictive factors of self-reported FAW were: age > 55 years old (odds ratio (OR) = 4.91, confidence interval (CI): 1.79–13.50, p < 0.01), traveling more than 40 thousand miles per year (OR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.08–3.22, p < 0.05), body mass index ≥ 30 (OR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.01–4.64, p < 0.05) and Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire score > 22 (OR = 3.93, 95% CI: 1.90–8.14, p < 0.01). Conclusions: There are different work and human factors underlying FAW among PDs. The Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire might be useful in measuring fatigue in this group and in detecting PDs at high risk of experiencing FAW.
