Opis:
The documentary film Archiwum istnień tells the story of research by Nazi anthropologists searching among the population of occupied Poland for representatives of the Aryan race. In her film, the director makes use of archival materials from World War Two (above all, photographs, propaganda film chronicles and letters). Not only does Justyna Łuczaj-Salej incorporate the above into the cinematographer’s box of tricks, but most of all, she exploits them counter to their authors’ intentions, thereby initiating a process that de-contextualises and re-contextualises these archives in a deconstruction of the past.

Opis:
The documentary film Rabbit à la Berlin (Królik po berlińsku), directed by Bartosz Konopka, tells the story of the Berlin Wall. The story is presented from an unusual perspective – that of the wild rabbits inhabiting the zone in the middle of the wall separating East and West Berlin, thus making reference to animal fables and the conventions of the nature film. The filmmakers also use known archival materials in an interesting way by placing them in new, surprising contexts. The story of animals told in Rabbit á la Berlin is parallel to that of people. The film combines these analogies in order to construct a powerful metaphor. The creators of Rabbit á la Berlin not only tell the story of the Germans, of East Germans separated from the western world, the story of the Berlin Wall, but also the story of Eastern European people living behind the Iron Curtain.

Opis:
In his comic Greetings from Serbia. A Journal in Comics Written During the Conflict in Serbia, Aleksander Zograf’s choice of form is associated with the periodical form of the diary in drawings kept by the author. By means of a series of episodes, Zograf shows selected fragments of daily life in Serbia: the realities of living in a country under sanctions, being bombed by NATO aircraft, and struggling with post-war chaos.A characteristic feature of the anthology Greetings from Serbia. A Journal in Comics Written During the Conflict in Serbia is – in the words of the author – “observation through fragments”. The poetics of the fragment, the autonomization of the individual elements that comprise the open composition, and the breaking up of the plot’s cohesion are all associated with the worldview that emerges from Zograf’s comics. The reality observed turns out to be chaotic, incoherent and irrational. It becomes impossible to fully embrace or provide any overarching sense to the events, and thus fictionalize and express them by means of a traditional narrative form. By choosing the form of the comic book, and abandoning a comprehensive, ordered point of view, the author attempts to describe the whole by means of fragments.

Opis:
This article presents the three different portraits of Moscow depicted in the Russian films  Walking the Streets of Moscow by Georgy Danielija, Taxi Blues by Pavel Lungin and Moscow by Alexander Zeldovich. The times the films were made (the thaw period, the period after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the decline during the 1990s) determine differences in the directors’ perceptions. The picture of the city becomes a reflection of both hope and of more contemporary fears and anxieties.

The analysis of the article’s author focuses on the graphic novels The Property by Rutu Modan and We Won’t See Auschwitz by Jérémy Dres. Th e comics discussed deal with similar issues. Both refer to the wartime and postwar fate of Polish Jews, show military history as a factor shaping the family history of multiple generations, and touch upon issues concerning identity, Polish-Jewish relations, and national stereotypes. Through the use of comics, both authors try to preserve pieces of family history while touching upon many far more general and universal issues. Comics prove in this case to be a handy tool in the telling of intertwining histories great and small.

The article looks at Andrzej Kondratiuk’s film Hydrozagadka as a parody of stories about superheroes. An analysis of the construction of the film’s characters, plot, rhetoric, ideology and use of space reveals a parodic transformation of the original model. Also analysed is the comic effect achieved by placing an American pop culture icon in a foreign cultural context – Poland in the early 1970s. The parodic nature of Hydrozagadka is analyzed in the context of Polish propaganda art from the period of communism.

Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 357–370. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/ pt.2019.32.19. The subject of the article is an animated film A Pushkin Trilogy directed by Andrei Khrzhanovsky, dedicated to Alexander Pushkin. It comprises the films: Ya k vam lechu vospominanem, I s vami snova ya and Osen. The article attempts to answer the question about the reasons for the director’s interest in this outstanding writer and his work. It also shows the evolution of the ‘Pushkin theme’ in Khrzhanovsky’s work, changes in the content and formalism, and artistic research that led to the creation of the original animated trilogy. The poetics of the work are analyzed, in which the director looks at the work of the Russian writer through the prism of his manuscripts and sketches, while at the same time expanding the formula of the biographical film.
