Opis:
The rapidly increasing multifarious use of metallic nanoparticles in technology has necessitated evaluation of their impact on environmental, biotic and human health. The present study investigated the effects of different concentrations of bulk and nanosized CuO on seed germination and seedling growth of Ricinus communis in a randomized completely design with four replications. The experimental treatments included four concentrations of bulk CuO (10, 50, 100 and 500 ppm), four concentrations of nanosized CuO (10, 50, 100 and 500 ppm), and the control without CuO. The results indicate that only the weighted germination index and seedling dry biomass of Ricinus communis were significantly affected by the treatments. Other germination characteristics, plumule and radicle length, and seedling fresh weight were not significantly affected by bulk and nanosized CuO concentrations. It can be concluded that bulk and nanosized CuO in this cocentrations not toxic for germination and growth of Ricinus communis.

Opis:
Chitosan/CuO nanocomposites (Chi/CuO) were prepared by facile and eco-friendly technique. The 2%w/v chitosan solution was mixed with 0.5 %w/w sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), resulting in the formation of ionically crosslinked chitosan. The crosslinked chitosan was soaked in an aqueous solution containing 0.001, 0.01 or 0.1 mol/L CuSO4·5H2O for 24 hrs, in which the Cu2+ ions were absorbed into the chitosan network, forming as the chitosan/Cu2+ precursors. The chitosan/Cu2+ precursors were hydrothermally reacted in two different basic media, i.e. NaOH and NH4OH, at 100°C for 24 hrs, resulting in the nano-sized CuO crystals hydrothermally grew and embedded in the crosslinked chitosan matrix. The CuO grown in the NaOH possessed larger crystallite size and higher crystallinity than that in the NH4OH. In addition, the CuO crystallite size in the nanocomposites increased with the increase of initial concentration of Cu2+ starting agent due to the increase of Cu2+ quantity in the chitosan/Cu2+ precursors. The chitosan/CuO nanocomposites prepared by using 0.01 and 0.1 mol/L Cu2+ could exhibit the antibacterial activities after intimate contact with Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli under JIS L 1902:1998 (Qualitative) test method, indicating their potential use as biocontrol agents.

CuO nanoflakes were successfully synthesized by microwave irradiation, using copper(II) sulphate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the starting materials and ethanol as the solvent. The CuO nanoflakes were characterized by using techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. The synthesized CuO nanoflakes were found to have morphology like nanoflakes with narrow size distribution and high purity. Moreover, the synthesized CuO nanoflakes were used as an efficient catalyst for synthesis of a series of dihydropyridine derivatives. Optimization studies with different catalysts and solvents reveal that CuO nanoparticle in the water/ethanol mixture is efficient catalyst/solvent system for the synthesis of dihydropyridine derivative.

Opis:
Al-CuO is a thermite material exhibiting the exothermic reaction only when aluminum melts. For wide spread of its applica-tion, the reaction temperature needs to be reduced in addition to the enhancement of total reaction energy. In the present study, a thermite nanocomposite with a large contact area between Al and CuO was fabricated in order to lower the exothermic reaction temperature and to improve the reactivity. A cryomilling process was performed to achieve the nanostructure, and the effect of composition on the microstructure and its reactivity was studied in detail. The microstructure was characterized using SEM and XRD, and the thermal property was analyzed using DSC. The results show that as the molar ratio between Al and CuO varies, the fraction of uniform nanocomposite structure was changed affecting the exothermic reaction characteristics.

Al K$\text{}_{α}$ excited photoelectron spectra (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) of the O 1s, Cu 2p, Ca 2p, Sr 3d core levels were measured for "infinite chain" Ca$\text{}_{2}$CuO$\text{}_{3}$ and Ca$\text{}_{0.5}$Sr$\text{}_{0.5}$CuO$\text{}_{2}$ compounds. The analysis indicates that for Ca$\text{}_{2}$CuO$\text{}_{3}$ the surface electronic structure is strongly influenced by a humid atmosphere. The surface layer is formed predominantly by copper hydroxide. The minor features of Cu 2p and O 1s are characteristic of the bulk bonding states. The valences of the Cu, Ca, and Sr atoms are close to 2+. The core electron binding energies (≈ 934 eV peak) are due to the 2p$\text{}_{3}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ 3d$\text{}^{10}$L$\text{}^{1}$ configuration of Cu(II) ions in the square planar coordination for both samples.

Przeprowadzono badania wpływu promotorów Ce, Cr, Ga, La i Pd na aktywność katalizatora CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 w procesie syntezy metanolu z CO2 i H2.
It has been well documented that the CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst shows high activity in the methanol synthesis from CO2 and H2. The CuO/ZnO/ZrO2 based catalysts were obtained by decomposing the citrate complexes, by adding small amount of promoters – Ce, Cr, Ga, La, Pd in order to improve the new catalyst’s catalytic properties. The catalytic activity was measured using a tubular high-pressure fixed bed reactor. The promoters were found to improve the catalytic activity and stability in the reaction of methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The positive influence of promoters, especially Ga, La, Ce and Cr on the activity and selectivity of the developed catalysts in the investigated process has been demonstrated.

We introduce a one-dimensional model for a CuO chain, with holes and S=1/2 spins localized in $3d_{x²-y²}$ orbitals, and p_σ oxygen orbitals without holes in the ground state. We consider a single hole doped at an oxygen site and study its propagation by spin-flip processes. We develop the Green function method and treat the hole-spin coupling in the self-consistent Born approximation, similar to that successfully used to study polarons in the regular t-J model. We present an analytical solution of the problem and investigate whether the numerical integration is a good approximation to this solution.

Opis:
Experimental studies on drag reduction (DR) of CuO based nanofluid with the additives of mixture of cationic surfactant CTAC (cetyltrimethylammonium chloride) and sodium salycilate - NaSal were performed. The obtained results were compared with those for water solution of CTAC/NaSal. Values of pressure drop were measured in specially designed laboratory setup equipped with measuring tubes of three different diameters - 4, 8 and 12 mm. It was found that the addition of surfactant and sodium salycilate mixture to nanofluid decreased its pressure drop during flow, however the drag reducing effect was greater for pure water. The DR effect obtained was in the range of 20 ÷ 70% for CuO based nanofluid. The diameter effect was also observed - the DR coefficient was greater for pipes of smaller inner diameters.

Otrzymane wyniki porównano z otrzymanymi dla wodnego roztworu CTAC/NaSal. Wartości oporów przepływu mierzono w specjalnie w tym celu zaprojektowanej instalacji laboratoryjnej wyposażonej w rurki pomiarowe o trzech różnych średnicach - 4, 8 i 12 mm.

Ultrasonic pulse echo technique was used to study cupric oxide (CuO) thin films. CuO thin films were prepared using sol gel technique. They were doped with Lithium (Li) (1%, 2% and 4%). Thin films’ thickness (d) and band gap energy (Eg) were measured. In addition, elastic moduli (longitudinal (L), shear (G), bulk (K) and Young’s (E)) and Poisson’s ratio (v) were determined to estimate the microstructure properties of the prepared films. The study ameliorated the used transducers to overcome their dead zone and beam scattering; wedges were developed. The results showed the effectiveness of these wedges. They enhanced transducers’ sensitivity by changing the dead zone, beam diameter, beam directivity and waves’ transmission. Also, the study noted that Li doping caused the improvement of CuO thin films to be more useful in solar cell fabrication. Li-CuO thin films had narrower band gap. Thus, they acquired a high quantum yield for the excited carriers; also they gained more efficiency to absorb solar light.

Various morphologies of monoclinic CuO powders were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of copper nitrate, copper acetate or copper sulfate. The synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry. Antibacterial activity of the samples was studied against Escherichia coli bacteria in dark and under visible light irradiation. Although the different precursors yielded the same band gap energies ( ≈1.6 eV) for the synthesized CuO samples, they resulted in various morphologies (hierarchy of stabilized micro/nanostructures), specific surface areas, concentrations of OH-surface groups, and visible light photocatalytic performances. The CuO nanorods synthesized from nitrate hydrothermal bath not only exhibited a considerable effective surface area, but also showed the highest concentration of absorbed OH-groups and subsequently, the strongest (photo)catalytic antibacterial properties ( ≈37 and 94% inactivation of the bacteria in dark and under visible light irradiation, respectively).

The paper proposes a method for copper sheet oxidation by using a laser beam. The thickness of the oxide layer increases with temperature growth; therefore, the proper parameters of the experiment such as pulse power, frequency and the speed of the beam were adjusted. High power diode laser was used in the investigations. The topography of the oxidised copper sheets was determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS analyses. Optical parameters of the deposited layer were characterised by spectrophotometry. Both roughness and thickness of the investigated samples were measured using the confocal laser scanning microscope. The technological recommendations for the laser micro-machining technology to obtain copper sheet oxidation by using the high power laser beam were selected.
