The article seeks answers to following questions: Can literature get by without spirituality? Does the spirituality in our literature have Christian form? Having this as its aim, the article portrays understanding of the term “spirituality” in Theology as well as the need to work out an understanding of this particular term in Humanities. The article states that this has to be done in a form of a dialog with the Theology of the Spirituality. Presented literal analyses of particular texts are an attempt to characterize some references to Christian spirituality that exist in Polish literature.

Artykuł pt. Znaki duchowości chrześcijańskiej we współczesnej literaturze polskiej poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytania: Czy literatura może obejść się bez duchowości? czy duchowość ma w naszej literaturze kształt chrześcijański? W tym celu artykuł przedstawia rozumienie terminu „duchowość” w naukach teologicznych oraz zwraca uwagę na potrzebę wypracowania znaczenia tego terminu w naukach humanistycznych. Przekonuje, że może się ono dokonać w dialogu z teologią duchowości. Przedstawione analizy tekstów literackich są próbą scharakteryzowania niektórych odwołań do duchowości chrześcijańskiej, jakie istnieją w literaturze polskiej.

The first case of HIV in Poland was discovered in the mid-1980s. Infected and sick people had their windows broken at that time. Over the years aggression has been replaced with tolerance, and the situation of HIV-positive individuals has changed as well. Falling sick is not tantamount to a death sentence and infected people can grow old. Nevertheless, one of the main problems such people face is a fear of loneliness, not to mention lack of friendliness and understanding from doctors and people professionally connected with this problem. On the basis of the analysis of the short stories Józef H. written by Marek Kochan and Trafieni written by Michał Witkowski we present the way HIV is described in literature as well as focus on the language employed to describe this disease. Additionally, we take into consideration comments on the social context of HIV/AIDS in Poland.

Polish woman‑centered symbolism has a specific dimension, which is depicted in the iconic ‘Polish Mother’ (Matka Polka). The iconic image is deeply rooted in Polish history and culture and it often refers to the mother of Jesus as she is expected to sacrifice her children for the motherland. As a woman, she realizes herself not only through motherhood but also in the service of her nation, and as such, she becomes a highly charged metaphor for both motherly love and patriotism. The ‘Polish Mother’ is a myth; a stereotype that has shaped the thinking of the nation for more than two centuries and is still largely in force. In contemporary literature (and also in various media texts and blogs) one can identify however, obvious attempts to re‑evaluate this very traditional iconic image. Especially motherhood, in Poland today, has gained a new dimension. I investigate some of the most characteristic aspects of the selected texts, focusing on the discrepancy between the old clichés and expectations and the subversion of traditionally defined motherhood in a modern society, which no longer takes the ‘Polish Mother’ at face value.

Miłosz’s volume Światło dzienne (Daylight, 1953) is conventionally read by critics as political poetry deeply engaged with history. The article offers a corrective to this traditional reading by interpreting the volume as interplay of European and American influences. As a European poet, Miłosz had experienced the violent demise of ideals at the foundation of the Old World. Światło dzienne is, therefore, at one level, an elegiac volume in which both persons and ideas are mourned. On the other hand, to the extent that America continues for Miłosz the noble ideas abandoned in Europe, he cannot accept what he regards as their misguided or perverse incarnations. This explains the emotional climate of the whole volume, with its dominant mood of disappointment, anger and refusal of reconciliation. Światło dzienne is American in its outlook in taking seriously America’s status as a superpower and its influence on the future direction of global history. It is anti-American, however, in identifying America’s perceived failures to live up to the post-war challenge for human civilization in general and the consequent dangers. The article intends to assess Miłosz’s debt to English-language poetry in this volume in light of his personal notes from his reading and translation work at the time.

Translating gender: Madame Intuita by Izabela Filipiak – Based on camp aesthetics, masquerade, irony and intertextuality, the poetry volume Madame Intuita (2002) by the Polish writer Izabela Filipiak aims to dismantle gender stereotypes and patriarchal linguistic codes. When translating her poems, both grammatical and social gender issues should be taken into due account. In the paper, the author analyses his own Italian translation of Filipiak’s poems (published in 2007) to explain the strategies used to preserve gender elusiveness, gender specification, and gender fluidity, as they play a key role in the writer’s poetic imaginary.

Article focuses on interpretation of the last novel written by Wiesław Myśliwski Traktat o łuskaniu fasoli. The author presents biography of hero — musician and homo viator. Novel describes his life and its connections with Polish history in XXth century. Above all, it presents a reflections on the role of music in culture after II World War. In his Traktat... phenomenon. The translators of the poems of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish poetess are mainly Lithuania’s most prominent poets and translators. In addition to poems, there also appeared translation of the book review column entitled Lektury nadobowiązkowe (“Non-compulsory reading”). Nobelist’s poems are published in the literary and cultural magazines “Literatūra ir menas” (“Literature and Art”) and “Šiaurės Atenai” (“Northern Athens”). Her poems are often published in the original language as well as translation. However, there is no serious academic discourse on translated Szymborska’s literary works in Lithuania.

Artykuł przedstawia twórczość szczecińskiego pisarza, Artura Daniela Liskowackiego, w optyce postkolonialnej. Autor ten zasłynął powieścią Eine kleine, ma jednak na swoim koncie kilka książek traktujących o problematyce niemieckiej pamięci kulturowej w polskim Szczecinie czy szerzej – na ziemiach poniemieckich. Odmienną tematyką cechuje się jego powieść Murzynek B. poświęcona kwestiom egzotyzmu, stereotypów rasowych i etnicznych, szczególnie związanych z figurą Murzyna w kulturze polskiej. Te tak różne dzieła łączy jednak perspektywa rozważań nad Obcym/Innym, ksenofobią i konstrukcją polskiej tożsamości konstytuowanej wobec odmienności. Dlatego też twórczość Liskowackiego zaprezentowana została jako pisarstwo postkolonialne – dokonujące estetyzacji kluczowej problematyki krytycznego namysłu nad relacjami kolonialnymi, w szerokim sensie tego pojęcia.
The article presents the work of the Szczecin writer, Artur Daniel Liskowacki, in a postcolonial perspective. This author became famous for his novel Eine kleine, but he has published several books on the issues of German cultural memory in Polish Szczecin, or more broadly – in the former German lands. A different subject is characteristic of his novel Murzynek B., which describes the issues of exoticism, racial and ethnic stereotypes, especially related to the figure of a black person (Negro) in Polish culture. These so different works, however, are linked by the perspective of the reflection on the Stranger/Other, xenophobia and the construction of Polish identity constituted in the face of dissimilarity. Therefore, Liskowacki’s work was presented as postcolonial writing – aestheticizing the key issue of critical reflection on colonial relations, in the broad sense of the term.

Autorka artykułu stawia śmiałą tezę, że współczesna literatura polska w wielu przypadkach (a na pewno w przypadku omawianej tu prozy i scenariuszy pisanych przez Jakuba Żulczyka) nie diagnozuje jedynie sytuacji obyczajowej, ale również stwarza pewne wzorce zachowania. Używając pojęcia „przemocy symbolicznej” (ukonstytuowanego przez Pierre’a-Félixa Bourdieu), twierdzi, że takie pisarstwo generuje również patologiczne i szkodliwe społecznie zachowania. Szczególnie niebezpiecznym moralnie zjawiskiem jest narastająca w literaturze wulgaryzacja języka. Jest to w istocie błędne koło: społeczeństwo podpowiada pewne wulgarne środki wyrazu; pisarz, nagminnie je stosując, daje przyzwolenie by właśnie tak, a nie inaczej wysławiać się i postępować. Uczenie się niewłaściwych zachowań zachodzi dzięki procesom, które psychologia nazywa torowaniem (ang. priming), modelowaniem i budowaniem skryptów (ang. scripts). Opisywane w artykule zjawiska, chociaż dotyczą przede wszystkim prozy polskiej, mają charakter uniwersalny. Zainteresowanie czytelnika z zagranicy mogą wzbudzić zwłaszcza psychologiczne konsekwencje odbioru literatury popularnej przejawiającej wymienione przez autorkę tendencje.
The author of the article proposes the thesis that contemporary Polish literature, in many instances that include the prose and screenplays of Jakub Żulczyk, does not merely diagnose a particular moral condition of Polish society, but also generates it. Pierre F. Bourdieu’s term „symbolic violence” aptly describes this process, which involves the creation of negative or pathological behaviours. What is particularly dangerous is an increasing vulgarization of literary language, which proceeds according to the principle of the vicious circle: the author is initially inspired by the language of the street, which he subsequently enriches with new vulgar expressions. Those are, in turn, incorporated in the language. The impact of this kind of literature on the readers appears to be consistent with processes recognized by psychology such as priming, modelling, and developing scripts.  Although the article makes references to Jakub Żulczyk›s prose, the phenomena it describes are not restricted to Polish literature, but universal. What might interest foreign readers are the psychological consequences of reading popular novels which exhibit the features and tendencies on which the article focuses.

This article discusses references to Polish literary works found in novels by Poznań-based author Małgorzata Musierowicz (born 1945). The protagonists of the 22-volume Jeżycjada series are literature lovers. They often quote famous Polish writers, from Ignacy Krasicki to another writer from Poznań – Marek Obarski (1947–1997). Quotations from literature, thanks to their wide platform of dissemination through school, songs and films, become part of the reproduced content category (reproduced word-groups). The novels by M. Musierowicz are also a platform of dissemination for Polish literary fiction.

The exploration of human sexuality at the end of the nineteenth century did not immediately stimulate the development of research in literary eroticism. Its development is associated not so much with the discoveries made by anthropologists as with the influence of the Nietzsche’s philosophy and Freud’s psychoanalysis. The theory of Dionysian culture with its concept of libido (which in times of the supremacy of high culture remains hidden in the language of literature) contributed to the first wave of erotic criticism. Decades later, its development was related to feminist criticism, followed by gender studies and homoerotic studies. What seems interesting in this context is the lack of reflection on the role of the audiovisual pornographic imagination in most contemporary literature. While porn studies is present in sociology, anthropology, and film studies, it is still absent from literary studies. The article presents the mutual influence of literature and pornographic cinema, showing the limitation of the traditional tools used in literary studies in the analysis of contemporary literary descriptions of sexual acts. It examines the reason for the lack of research on this topic, paying attention to the ethical and aesthetic consequences of changing this situation. Finally, it outlines the areas of interest that porn studies could help explore.

What Does It Mean to Be a Polish Art Critic Today? The discussion on the topic of contemporary literary criticism has been contained within two symbolic poles: the article What does it mean today to be a Polish writer by Karol Maliszewski written in 1995 and What does it mean today to be a Polish authoress, written in 2008 by Igor Stokfiszewski. The former paper, which is characteristic of the critical-literary awareness of the 90s of the 20th century, promotes literature that is far from being involved and is based on an individual writer’s gesture; the latter, on the other hand, belongs to one of the better known critical projects of recent years and it promotes a political turnaround proclaiming literature that is engagé and one that is treated as an instrument of social critique. The project of literary criticism is at the same time an expressive and controversial proposition and its significance also consists in the fact that it became a strong impulse which mobilized literary criticism to define and defend other conceptions of literature and criticism and in this way contribute to a fundamental debate in the milieu of critics.

Political but Non-party In recent years, involvement has become almost the main topic of literary life; this is due largely to the fact that, firstly, there has emerged a group of authors who manifest not only their political views, but also their obligations; secondly due to the fact that some critics appeal for a „political turnaround” in literature and thirdly, due to the popularization of the thought of several world philosophers, with Jacques Rancier at the helm, who try to extract the political out of the aesthetic, and fourthly, as a consequence of the reactivation of old languages – Marxist one on the left side and conservative-identity one on the right. The resistance which these tendencies have aroused in some milieus is associated with the conviction that the discovery of the political possibilities of literature and its interpretation leads (or will lead) to its literariness, utilitarization, subordination to the languages that dominate on the public scene. The author of the article shares the above fears; he is of the opinion that literature should rather be an instrument for undermining instruments, pragmatism and sociologism by means of a language that does not belong to the territory of defined discourse; whereas the most interesting aspect of its political nature consists in its ability to resist politics.

The article deals with work after the political transformation of 1989 in the light of contemporary literary accounts in the prose of Andrzej Stasiuk, Dawid Bieńkowski, Piotr Siemion, Daniel Odija, and others. The literary works are taken to contain records of personal and social problems, captured as objectivised experience of many individuals. An attempt is made to adapt the methodological proposals characteristic of the poetics of experience to selected approaches to work in contemporary literature. These approaches include: the shortage of work as the key element of social change, part-time work, physical work (often considered inferior and unfulfilling), work on a marketplace (as the release of subdued energy), the work of a small-business entrepreneur (along with bankruptcy as an inalienable element of the experience), and work connected with new forms of capitalist corporate context. The experience of work in the times of transformation, as it appears in literature, is presented in terms of failure, exclusion, exploitation, more than a mirage of careers – although the latter approach is also present, albeit often in the context of irony and parody. In the writers’ view, the Polish reality after the transformation reveals a deep social disintegration, while individuals, forced to become self-reliant, do not always win when confronted with the new, capitalist reality.
 Autor zajmuje się doświadczeniem pracy w czasach transformacji ustrojowej po roku 1989 w świetle współczesnych świadectw literackich zawartych w prozie Andrzeja Stasiuka, Dawida Bieńkowskiego, Piotra Siemiona, Daniela Odii i innych. Utwory literackie traktuje jako zapis problemów jednostkowych i społecznych, ujętych w aspekcie obiektywizacji doświadczenia, będącego udziałem wielu jednostek. Propozycje metodologiczne, wypracowywane w ramach poetyki doświadczenia stara się zaadaptować do próby prześledzenia kilku wskazanych ujęć problematyzacji doświadczenia pracy w literaturze najnowszej. Do tych ujęć należą: ukazywanie braku pracy jako kluczowego kontekstu zmiany społecznej, następnie: praca dorywcza, fizyczna, ujmowana często jako praca wstydliwa, nieprzynosząca satysfakcji, praca bazarowa, ukazywana jako wyzwolenie tłumionej energii, praca drobnego biznesmena – wraz z bankructwem jako nieodłącznym elementem tego doświadczenia – oraz praca związana z nowymi formami kapitalistycznego korporacjonizmu.Doświadczenie pracy czasów transformacji w świetle ujęć literackich przedstawiane jest częściej w kategoriach klęski, wykluczenia, wyzysku niż mirażu karier, choć i takie ujęcia pojawiają się – jednak często w konwencjach ironicznoparodystycznych. Zdaniem pisarzy w polskiej rzeczywistości po przełomie ujawnia się głęboka dezintegracja społeczna, zaś jednostki, zdane na siebie, nie zawsze wychodzą zwycięsko w konfrontacji z nową, kapitalistyczną rzeczywistością.

W artykule zostają przybliżone argumenty nieomawianej dotychczas szerzej w polskich badaniach debaty metodologicznej toczonej w ramach współczesnych adaptation studies. Autor opisuje trzy tendencje charakterystyczne dla najnowszych teorii adaptacji: metateoretyczne próby przeramowania pojęcia adaptacji, krytykę podejścia typu medium specificity oraz otwieranie się na konteksty kulturowe, społeczne i ekonomiczne. Zdaniem autora jednym z największych wyzwań stojących przed studiami nad adaptacją jest przełamanie obowiązującego w obrębie dyscypliny podziału na badania tekstualne i kontekstualne (na który zwracała uwagę Kamilla Elliott). Kategorią, która może stanowić pomost między ujęciami formalistycznymi a kulturoznawczymi, jest pojęcie dyskursu, które nie było dotąd przedmiotem poważnej debaty w ramach dyscypliny. Posługując się przykładami polskich adaptacji z ostatnich lat, autor wskazuje na możliwe sposoby zastosowania tej kategorii w badaniach porównawczych.
The article presents the methodological debate in contemporary adaptation studies, which has not been discussed in greater detail in Polish research. The author describes three trends characteristic of the latest adaptation theories: metatheoretical attempts to reframe the notion of adaptation, criticism of medium-specificity approach, opening up to cultural, social and economic contexts. According to the author, one of the greatest challenges that adaptation studies faces is to overcome the discipline’s division into textual and contextual research (which was noticed by Kamilla Elliott). A category that could link formalistic and cultural approaches is, as the author argues, the category of discourse, which has not been the subject of a broader debate within the discipline so far. Referring to the examples of the latest Polish film adaptations, the author indicates possible ways of applying the concept of discourse in comparative studies.

The article analyses the way in which disability is portrayed in contemporary Polish literature for children, with a particular emphasis on the latest literature. Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s theory of the baroque stare is applied in the analysis and allows the reconstruction of a network of stares in which the disabled are entangled, and also to reconstruct the place attributed to them in society. In a number of texts, a confrontation with onlookers turns out to be an introduction to a dialogue that gives a disabled person a chance to express their feelings and needs. However, the increasingly common portrayal of disability in the social category does not free literature from stereotypes.

This article takes as its starting point the Greek term μεταξύ, a preposition meaning ‘between’, fi rst turned into a noun in Plato’s Symposium, and in that substantivized form adapted for their own ends by a number of 20th-century philosophers, most notably by Simone Weil. In her Gravity and Grace (French: La Pesanteur et la grâce) she defi nes le metaxu as in-betweenness, a social and metaphysical category which embraces all that connects and divides (as, for example, a wall that both separates two prisoners and can be used by them to tap messages). In this article Weil’s concept of metaxu is applied to the language and then to various readings of two of Wisława Szymborska’s poems, ‘Funeral’ and ‘Elegiac Calculation’. Pragmalinguistics and semantics, too, play a role in the interpretation of these poems.

Literature, Feminism, Criticism – Other Constellations? In her article the authoress outlines the issues concerning the relation between feminism, literary criticism and modern literature. She poses some questions concerning the prose oeuvre of contemporary Polish women authors as well as the social contexts and aesthetic strategies associated with it. What proved to be important here were also issues allowing reflection on the change of literary-critical and historical and literary discourses inspired by feminist thought, as well as issues allowing to record the losses and gains resulting from the entanglement of feminist literary criticism in mass communication and the results of the „cultural turnaround” of feminist literary studies.

Artykuł prezentuje zjawisko modernizacji wątków folklorystycznych w polskiej literaturze najnowszej. Genettowskie ujęcie trawestacji oraz powiązana z nią modernizacja diegetyczna stanowią teoretyczną podstawę refleksji. Analizie poddano trzy utwory uznanych autorów (Leszka K. Talki, Jacka Dukaja oraz Mariusza Sieniewicza), które choć odwołują się do tego samego intertekstualnego hipotekstu – bardzo dobrze znanego wątku ATU 327 a (Jaś i Małgosia), mają jednak różnych odbiorców. Pozwala to pokazać, jak szeroki zakres możliwości daje modernizacja baśni: od stylu, przez konstrukcję świata przedstawionego, przebieg fabuły aż po interpretację. Zabieg ten może służyć nie tylko przybliżeniu tradycyjnych wątków współczesnemu czytelnikowi, ale także kompensacji i terapii, a także podjęciu problematyki metaliterackiej oraz krytyki społecznej. Omawiany wątek, po uwspółcześnieniu, promuje różnorodne wartości: zarówno konserwatywne, jak i lewicowe. Należy podkreślić, że zniesienie dystansu między odbiorcą a światem przedstawionym jako konsekwencję modernizacji baśni równoważą fabularne i narracyjne sposoby odbudowywania go, co osłabia grozę folklorystycznego hipotekstu. 
The purpose of the article is to present the phenomenon of the modernization of the fairy tale in contemporary Polish fiction. The theoretical frame of the article is Gérard Genette’s theory of intertextuality, and in particular the following two categories: travesty and diegetic modernization. The author focuses on the works linked to the same folk hypotext – ATU 327a, such as Hansel and Gretel. The three texts analysed in the paper were written by esteemed authors: Leszek K. Talko, Jacek Dukaj and Mariusz Sieniewicz. They addressed their works to diverse audiences: children, adults, and both. These methodological assumptions give an opportunity to show a wide spectrum of possibilities enabled by modernization. The style, the represented world, the plot and the interpretation of the fairy tale are the elements which could change when modernization occurs. The described technique of retelling aims is make the fairy tale more familiar to contemporary audiences, as well as to allow for critique of politics, society and literature. Its therapeutic function is important, too. In spite of the fact that the texts analysed herein lack the sense wonder characteristic of the traditional fairy tale, thereby reducing the distance from the reader, one can see that they rely on various ways of distancing the audience, which reduces the horror of the traditional fairy tale.

Digital literature or "HTML literature" is one of the more expressive and important trends of the Polish literature of the 21st century. In order to present the main aims and objectives of HTML literature, it is essential to take under consideration the digital works characterized by the autonomisation of words, as well as the isolation of words from the linguistic and non-linguistic context and reality, so that "the word itself and for itself would have a clear meaning" – as it was claimed in the late 1960s by one of the main representatives of Polish language art and the icon of Polish concrete poetry, Stanisław Dróżdż. The authors search for the predecessors of such an approach to literary texts in the period of the Great Avant-garde – one can refer here to the pronouncements of the Polish Formists and Constructivists (the true beginning are the literary manifestoes and poems of Tytus Czyżewski from 1921, inspiring such Polish Constructivists as Henryk Berlewi, Mieczysław Szczuka, Teresa Żarnowerówna, as well as Władysław Strzemiński, the latter author deserving special attention. Contemporarily in the 21st century, the works of Piotr Kowalczyk are renowned for a similar treatment of “the isolated word”. Kowalczyk, who works under the pseudonym of Nick Name, is the author of such works as: iPhone Stories, Twitter Fiction, Tech Quotes, Transtories, as well as Short stories for geeks.
Jednym z bardziej wyrazistych trendów polskiej literatury XXI wieku jest literatura cyfrowa, czyli HTML. Chcąc oddać główny zamysł piśmiennictwa HTML należy wziąć pod uwagę dzieła odznaczające się zautonomizowaniem słowa oraz wyizolowaniem słów z kontekstu językowego i rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej tak, „żeby słowo samo w sobie i dla siebie znaczyło” - jak twierdził już od końca lat 60 XX w. przedstawiciel polskiego language art'u (czyli poezji konkretnej) Stanisław Dróżdż. Autorki upatrują protoplastów takiego traktowania wypowiedzi literackiej w okresie Wielkiej Awangardy - można odwołać się tu do wystąpień polskich formistów i konstruktywistów (początkiem są literackie manifesty i wiersze Tytusa Czyżewskiego z 1921 r., kontynuacją działania polskich konstruktywistów, takich jak Henryk Berlewi, Mieczysław Szczuka, Teresa Żarnowerówna oraz Władysław Strzemiński; na szczególną uwagę zasługuje ten ostatni artysta). Współcześnie, w XXI w., z podobnego traktowania „wyizolowanego słowa” słynie twórczość Piotra Kowalczyka (występującego pod pseudonimem Niżej podpisany, ang. Nick Name), autora iPhone Stories, Twitter Fiction, Tech Quotes, Transtories, oraz Short stories for geeks.

This article is built on the premise that the topos has become a potent unit of cultural memory, an image that stores a wealth of often vague, buried or forgotten ideas. Its contents, like those of literature, tend to become extraordinarily condensed and confl ated; in consequence, some topoi (in particular the Holocaust topos) defy conventional tools of understanding and analysis. A solution to this problem can be found in an approach which broadens the scope of the sources of the Holocaust to include pop culture; gives up the rigid classifi cation of topoi, based on ‘hard’, documentary evidence; and, draws on a conceptual frame that connects the topos with the mechanisms of remembrance. A practical application of this approach is offered here in a series of readings of selected passages from Marcin Pilis’s novel The Meadow of the Dead (Łąka umarłych), Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s crime story A Grain of Truth (Ziarno prawdy), Marcin Wolski’s alternate history novel Wallenrod, Justyna Wydra’s war romance The SS-man and a Jewess (Esesman i Żydówka), Krzysztof Zajas’s thriller Oszpicyn [local Yiddish: Auschwitz] as well as some poems by Jacek Podsiadło from his volume The Breguet Overcoil (Włos Bregueta).
