    The problems of forming a character has had a long tradition. One of the best known theoreticians of this issue is F. W. Foerster. The paper seeks to characterize the ideal of forming a character in his approach. According to Foerster, the Christian ideal of character is a peculiar dialectics between the male and female element. "Manhood" in his conception is identified with the Greek virtue of fortitude, self-affirmation of the spirit in the face of sense drives, fortune, and community. It is a constant aspiration for the aim, irrespective of adversities. Now "femininity" is an ability to love, sacrifice, to feel empathy with another man, tact, considerateness, it may be identified with the Christian virtue of love. The distinction between the male and female spiritual elements points to a peculiar twofold aspect of human nature, and postulates a necessity to respect it in defining the universal aim of the formation of character.

    Participation of self-government in shaping a democratic order in organising the Polish society of the 1990's shows significant correlation with the conception of the Christian social order. In the territorial self-government an institution is seen that assumes respect for the human person and his freedom. Together with these values, self-government is on principle subsidiary. In the article the attention of the reader was also drawn to the role of localism and regionalism in social life and it was stated that these areas of reality are turned to at the times of impairment of the state's subjectivity.

    Opis:
    Over the years people fulfilling the honorable task of helping, especially youths, to develop, used definite conceptions of education. In preparing the society to live according to the truths of the Christian faith, the Church invariably ascribed a great role to education. The way education and its character were understood developed during the 2000 years of Christianity and became the basis for the tradition of the European education in general. Especially in the period between the two World Wars foundations were laid for the theoretical basis of the Catholic education. It should be stated with all certainty that Father Marian Pirożyński of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly called Redemptorists, is one of the people who can be numbered among the propagators of the Catholic educational thought. The Church's thought focused on such a direction of education that would make the pupil strive after forming a true and ideal Christian in himself, that is after achieving a fully human character; hence the views inspired by these thoughts – as in the case of Rev. Marian Pirożyński – may be called Catholic pedagogy. Pirożyński eagerly propagated elements of the Church's official teaching in his writings. He opposed pedagogical naturalism that reduced education to using only natural means, in this way excluding or limiting Christian formation by negating the existence of both sin and grace. The Catholic conception of education realized in schools between the Wars had an integral character not only because it took into consideration the supernatural aim of pedagogical activities, but also through physical, intellectual and spiritual development of the pupils. From today's point of view it can also be called open pedagogy that, without blurring the man's multi-aspect relation to the world of nature, recognizes man's transcendental dimension and his relation to God. Pirożyński turns out to be not only an ardent propagator, but also a decided defender of such education.

    In the history of pedagogical thought the issue of shaping character has often been taken up. This article, which analyses the writings of the outstanding Polish theologian and teacher, archbishop Józef Bilczewski, and pays special attention to their Christian character, is part of the above mentioned trend. The authors of the article provide answers to three fundamental questions: how did Józef Bilczewski define character, what elements did he recognise in it and in whom did he see the first model for the Christian character? The issues reflected upon in this article refer not only to the history of Christian pedagogical thought in Poland, but they are also relevant to contemporary pedagogical practice and upbringing. Developing a clear stand on the issue of forming character is also important for modern religious education, which by its nature is connected with upbringing in faith, and at the same time is oriented to the complete personal and social development of a man.

    Niniejszy artykuł zawiera główne wyniki badań i danych z obserwacji ekologicznych nad jakościowym zróżnicowaniem szaty roślinnej (flora i roślinność) na terenie 32 cmentarzy i ich bliskich stref otulinowych na Podbeskidziu Zachodniokarpackim (transekt wynosi około 120 km – od Cieszyna do Brzączowic koło Dobczyc i Zalewu Dobczyckiego; ryc. 1). Dokonano charakterystyki zróżnicowania gatunkowego flory naczyniowej Tracheophyta na wybranych 32 powierzchniach badawczych/cmentarzach i ich otulinach (o promieniu ok. 100 m). Określono także specyfikę składu gatunkowego flory naczyniowej poszczególnych, wybranych cmentarzy (od 324 do 506 gatunków i ich niższych taksonów), jak i w skali ogółu gatunków tej flory, stwierdzonych na tych obiektach (łącznie – 1250 gat. wraz z niższymi taksonami). Wykonano w terenie liczne spisy florystyczne oraz opracowano bardzo obszerny, naukowy zbiór alegatów zielnikowych, który złożono w Zielniku Naukowym Instytutu Botaniki PAN w Krakowie. Badano również udział we florze spontanicznie rozprzestrzeniających się składników synantropijnych, t.j. rodzimych apofitów i obcych antropofitów, a wśród nich dawnych przybyszy – archeoofitów przybyłych do Polski przed 1500 rokiem n.e.) oraz kenofitów, które przywędrowały do Polski po dacie odkrycia Nowego Świata/Ameryki (1492 r.) przez Krzysztofa Kolumba. Scharakteryzowano liczną grupę pielęgnowanych roślin ozdobnych obcego pochodzenia (jednoroczne, dwuletnie i byliny) wraz z aklimatyzowanymi przedstawicielami dendroflory (drzewa i krzewy). Zwrócono uwagę, że w składzie florystycznym wszystkich badanych cmentarzy znaczący udział (około 60%) ma również grupa alopatycznych roślin leczniczych, a wiele stosowanych jest w homeopatii. Zbadano zróżnicowanie synekologiczne / fitosocjologiczne budowanych przez te gatunki ugrupowań (zespoły sensu Braun–Blaquet 1964, Matuszkiewicz 2001 oraz inne oprac.). Natomiast ogólnoprzyrodnicze aspekty badawcze dotyczyły przede wszystkim pomnikowych drzew oraz spontanicznego, dzikiego występowania in situ roślin objętych ochroną prawną w Polsce, a także chronionych gatunków pielęgnowanych na cmentarzach ex situ (łącznie – ponad 30 gat. chronionych).
    The paper presents mainly the results of studies and data from ecological analyses of the qualitative diversity of vegetation (plant communities and flora) of 32 cemeteries and their vicinity within the area of Podbeskidzie Zachodniokarpackie (approximately 120 km – from Cieszyn to Brzączowice in the Dobczyce Municipality, on Dobczyckie Lake; fig. 1). A profile of species diversity of vascular flora Tracheophyta within 32 selected study areas / cemeteries and their vicinity (within the radius of 100 metres). The characteristics of the species composition of the vascular flora of the selected cemeteries have been specified (324 to 506 species and lower taxa). Numerous vegetation lists have been compiled and an extensive scientific collection of herbarium specimens has been prepared, submitted to the National Herbarium of the Institute of Botany, PAN in Krakow. The study also concerned the participation in plant communities of the spontaneously spreading synanthropic components, namely native apophytes and foreign anthropophytes, also the plants that spread in the past, archeophytes (which appeared in Poland before 1500 AD) as well as kenophytes (which spread in Poland after the discovery of the New World/America by Christopher Columbus in 1492). A numerous group of cultivated ornamental plants of foreign origin has been described (annual, biennial and perennial), as well as the acclimatised dendroflora representatives (trees and shrubs). It has been observed that in the plant communities of all the analysed cemeteries, an important part (60%) is composed of allopathic medicinal plants, many of which are used in homeopathy. Synecological/ phytosociological diversity of such plant communities has also been studied (Braun–Blaquet 1964, Matuszkiewicz 2001 and other studies). Other general aspects of the study concerned mainly monumental trees and spontaneous, wild distribution in situ of plants protected in Poland, as well as protected plants cultivated at cemeteries ex situ (over 30 species of protected plants).

    W artykule podjęto temat oryginalnego pojmowania religijności odzwierciedlonego w cyklu powieściowym Czerwone Koło Aleksandra Sołżenicyna. Autor artykułu koncentruje się na kilku wybranych aspektach charakterystyki cara Mikołaja II, które zostały wyakcentowane w utworze. Na przykładzie postaci ostatniego rosyjskiego imperatora ukazano Sołżenicynowską ocenę religijności w odniesieniu do dobra Rosji. Badania ukazują, że głównym kryterium literackiej oceny postawy religijnej postaci historycznych, niezależne od ich rzeczywistego heroizmu cnót, a nawet oficjalnie uznanej świętości, dla Sołżenicyna jest przede wszystkim stosunek do ojczyzny. Mikołaj II jest odpowiedzialny za katastrofę Rosji i nawet jego męczeństwo, przedstawione symbolicznie w ostatniej księdze Marca Siedemnastego, nie zmienia tego krytycznego obrazu. Ostatecznie zaś narratorskie rozważania o religijności mają charakter dydaktyczny, a ich odniesieniem jest współczesność rosyjska.
    The article deals with the issue of the religious position of individuals in ‘the Red Wheel’ by A. Solzhenitsyn. The main attention is focused on features of tsar Nicholas II. Analyzing an example of the last Russians Emperor proves that Solzhenitsyn presents the religious theme from patriotic point of view. Despite individual devotion, honesty and even officially admitted holiness of Nicholas II Solzhenitsyn shows rather negative sides of the tsar. According to the writer the Emperor takes responsibility for spreading the revolution and the catastrophe of Russia. The Solzhenitsyn attitude is revealed in the narrative technique, particularly the usage of irony in characterizing of figures. Even tsar’s martyrdom, which is shown in the last part of ‘March 1917’, doesn’t change the specific critical picture of him in the Solzhenitsyn’s epic.
    В статье поднимается вопрос понимания религиозности в романном цикле Красное Колесо Александра Солженицына. Автор статьи фокусирует свое внимание на нескольких аспектах характеристики царя Николая II, на которые делается акцент в произведении. На примере лица последнего русского императора видно, что Солженицын оценивает индивидуальную религиозность с точки зрения добра России. Проведенные исследования показывают, что в произведении главным критерием оценки религиозной позиции человека, несмотря на индивидуальные подвиги или даже официальное признание святости, остается отношение к отечеству. По Солженицыну, царь несет ответсвенность за катастрофу России и даже мученичество Николая, представленное в последней книге Марта 17, не меняет общего критического образа.

    The article deals with the aspects of development of the spiritual sphere of Ukrainians as proposed in the works of Mykola Shlemkevych which are related to understanding of the essence of the national character, the inflence of the history of the people, upbringing traditions, folk customs, life in the family. The authors have also revealed the influences of human activity on the formation of a person’s character features. According to Shlemkevych, the national character reflcts the attitude of people to reality, culture of those people, their literature, language, architecture, etc., and it is embodied in their particular way of thinking, feelings, typical behaviour, emotional reactions to actions. This does not exclude changes in the character of an individual during his/her lifetime, but typical features of one’s character are manifested in certain inclinations, disposition of the vast majority of representatives of the nation. According to Shlemkevych, these are the following traits of Ukrainians: faith in God, patriotism, hard work, emotionality, love of songs, respect for mother and family, freedom of love, hospitality.
    W artykule omówiono aspekty rozwoju sfery duchowej Ukraińców zaproponowane w twórczości Mykoły Shlemkevycha, a związane ze zrozumieniem istoty narodowego charakteru oraz z wpływem historii ludzi, tradycji, wychowania, obyczajów ludowych i życia w rodzinie. Autor ujawnił także wpływ działań człowieka na słownictwo, na kształtowanie cech charakteru danej osoby. Według Shlemkevycha charakter narodowy odzwierciedla stosunek ludzi do rzeczywistości, kultury danego narodu, jego literatury, języka, architektury itp. Objawia się on w szczególnym sposobie myślenia, uczuciach, typowych zachowaniach, reakcjach emocjonalnych oraz działaniach. Nie wyklucza to zmian charakteru jednostek w trakcie ich życia, zarazem należy dodać, że typowe cechy tego charakteru przejawiają się w pewnych skłonnościach, usposobieniu ogromnej większości przedstawicieli narodu. Według Shlemkevycha są to następujące cechy Ukraińców: wiara w Boga, patriotyzm, ciężka praca, emocjonalność, miłość do pieśni, szacunek dla matki i rodziny, wolność miłości, gościnność.

    The subject of this article is the presentation of the research results on connection between Christian character and religiosity as well as personality of man. True Christian character manifests itself in the permanent personal qualities of mind and will, emotions, imagination, and actions formed in the process of upbringing and self-formation, which determine persistent ethical conduct inspired by the values empowered in biblical faith activated especially in unexpected challenging and difficult circumstances. The aim of the research was also to identify the empirical linkages between Christian character and a number of religious and personality characteristics. For diagnosis of Christian character the Scale for Christian Character Assessment is used. Religiosity was examined using the following test methods: Centrality of Religiosity Scale, Post-Critical Belief Scale, Scale of Coherence of Religious Convictions - 2, Religious Identity Scale, Biblical Conservatism Scale, Village Biblical Literalism Scale, faith assessment and religious practices scales (personal prayer, Bible, attending Mass). Personality however was examined with following methods: Francis’ Psychological Type and Emotional Temperament Scales, Learning and Thinking Styles (SUM-1), IPIP-Big Factors Model-20, Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. Participants of the research were adults attending Sunday Mass, high school students, and students of the University of Applied Sciences. It was found a number of correlation between dimensions of Christian character and the vast majority dimensions of religiosity tests, in particular with centrality of religiosity, religious cognitive styles, acceptance of Catholic doctrine, biblical conservatism and literalism, Bible reading, faith self-assessment, and to a lesser extent with religious identity. It has been found correlations between dimensions of character and some aspects of psychological preferences, personality dimensions, as well as learning and thinking styles. The three profiles (types) of Christian character obtained using factor analysis method were compared with the level achieved in religiosity and personality test results. Observed statistically significant differences between character profiles are consistent with the results obtained via the correlation coefficients. The groups compared in the area of personality generally differ statistically significant only with regard to the personality factors. On the basis of the survey can be stated that Christian character, religiosity and personality are different characteristics of the person, which are in the interaction, although the quality of different dimensions of religious life play a decisive role for the formation of the character. At the end of the article the author points pastoral value of generated psychological-pastoral knowledge.

    Opis:
    Stairways are one of the built elements of landscape architecture that shape the character of a space. Our research takes a closer look at the stairways of historical value in the environment of Buda Castle World Heritage Site. Firstly, through the production of sketches, the dominant spatial effects, views, focal points and motifs perceived during the use of the chosen stairways, were analysed. Secondly, an assessment matrix was formulated from criteria such as scale, materials, size, quality of adjacent green spaces, etc. Our aim is to underline and give evidence of the potential of stairways in influencing the open spaces and the views in historical urban environments.
    Schody terenowe są obiektami architektury krajobrazu kształtującymi charakter przestrzeni. Omówione tu badania prezentują w bliższym ujęciu historyczne schody w otoczeniu wpisanego na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO Zamku w Budzie. Jako pierwsze przeanalizowano dominujące efekty przestrzenne, widoki, punkty formalnie ważne i motywy dostrzegane podczas korzystania ze schodów. Jako drugą - na podstawie kryteriów, takich jak skala, materiały, wielkość, jakość przyległych terenów zieleni itp. - sformułowano macierz oceny. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie dowodów na potencjał schodów terenowych do wpływania na otwarte przestrzenie i widoki w historycznych środowiskach miejskich.
