Opis:
The Cretaceous sedimentary sequence of the Asu River Group in Ameri, southeastern Nigeria play host to lead-zinc ore deposits in irregular mineralized veins of non-uniform geometry. Two deposits (designated DEPOSIT A and DEPOSIT B) were economically assessed using an integrated approach. This was performed by employing a geometry-based classical scheme involving the mathematical relationship between the three cardinal variables of ore reserve estimation namely: surface area, thickness and density. Firstly, detailed and extensive geological mapping was carried out to establish the geological attribute of the mineral deposits. Since reserve estimation extends beyond exposed faces, spontaneous potential traverse, vertical electrical sounding and horizontal profiling, being orthogonal to the trend of the enclosing veins were used to characterize the existing sub-surface stratification and create forward models that revealed the concealed ore geometry (limiting depth, lateral extents and thickness variations). Subsequent to delineation, the depth to the top of the target ore lodes was obtained by implementing the Peter's half slope technique on self-potential curves. Thickness values of the ore bodies of interest were applied in three numerical classical integration techniques, i.e. Trapezoidal, Simpson's and Simpson's third-eight rule, for volume estimation. To overcome the non-uniqueness problem of DC resistivity data interpretation, the available drilling data was applied. Samples retrieved from each lode were subjected to mass and volume analysis using the CS200 electronic balance and water displacement technique, to determine the average density of each lode. Results from 2D subsurface resistivity sections showed the lead-zinc deposits as zones of low resistivity in a background of high resistivity. The 1D stratigraphic models reveal a mean thickness estimate of 11.85 m and 10.50 m for DEPOSITs' A and B, respectively. Sample densities correlate well with the average density of pure galena. Applying the scalar-geometric rule, a combined estimate of 10,778.95tonnes was obtained, representing a relatively economically viable quantity worthy of medium scale extraction.

Opis:
Accommodation of many channels in dense wavelength division multiplexing networks raises the average power density of the optical networks. This results in severe nonlinear effects in the optical networks. An optimized design of non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with an enormous effective area can overcome this nonlinear effect and also offer a minimum bending loss and splice loss for a dense wavelength division multiplexing system. In this paper, the alpha-peak profile is utilized for calculating electrical field distribution and designing the refractive index profile of the non-zero dispersion shifted fiber. This fiber has a high effective area of about 120 μm2. Conjointly, the accomplished fiber has a very low bending loss of 1.40×10–14 dB/km and reduced splice loss of 4.46×10–3 dB. Due to this high effective area, the dense wavelength division multiplexing network performance is upgraded by diminishing nonlinear effects. In addition, the newly designed fiber has also a very low dispersion slope (0.057 ps/nm2km). Thus, the proposed fiber is optimized to handle high bandwidth and multiple high bit-rate wavelength channels without nonlinear impairments in the 1.55 μm window long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.

This paper presents the aim and realization procedures of the project EURO- ACCESS (Agroclimatic Change and European Soil Suitability, No. EV5VCT920129, CIPA3510PL923399, CIPDCT930022, CIPDCT925058, financed by EC). The project was coordinated by Dr. Peter Loveland, Soil Survey and Land Research Centre. Crarifield University, Silsoe Campus, Bedford, Great Britain. The project was conducted in 1992-1995 by scientific institutes from 6 countries, including the Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Lublin. This book consists of main information about the whole project and detailed information about, tasks performed by the Institute of Agrophysics, PAS in cooperation with the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG) Puławy as well as with other European institutes. There are presented results of investigations conducted in cooperation with ADAS Land Centre, Gleadthorpe Research Centre, Meden Vale, Mansfield, Great Britain, (Chapt. 2: Modelling of water movement in the soil profile with the preferential flow influence.), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin, Poland (Chapter 3: The method of rainfall intensity estimation for runoff prediction), INRA Montpellier, Prance and IUNG Puławy, Poland (Chapter 4: Verification of yield prediction model using soil and climatic data). The basic task of EURO-ACCESSS project was the model and program development for prediction of climate change influence onto potential yield of important crops. The climatic and physiological properties are assumed to be known. In hydrological submodel developed in ADAS, Mansfield, there was Richards one dimensional flow model assumed. In order to include heterogeneity of the soil the submodel of bypass flow was created by IA PAS and included into existing one dimensional flow procedure. The horizontal infiltration submodel is based on Green- Ampt simplified flow model. It plays role of source and/or sink term within the Richards procedure and accounts for the bypass flow of water from the surface to the deeper layers of the soil profile. The model has been verified in the laboratory conditions, on the basis of numerical experiments and in the field condition. Laboratory flow experiment with induced cracks shows the possibility of explanation of bypass flow with developed procedure. Numerical experiment shows ade- quateness of proposed crack and inaeropore description to the field data. The model allows easily estimate macropore parameters from the simple measurements at the soil surface or from the profile cross-section. The calibration of the model on the basis of measured data consisting soil moistures at different depths and precipitation data, soil hydraulic properties and évapotranspiration data, shows better agreement with the bypass flow model included. The main problem was to estimate momentary rain intensity from the daily precipitation data available. This was done using the statistical model of the rain intensity distribution. The momentary rain intensity plays major role in the runoff estimation. On the basis of long term (1982-1993) historical precipitation, climatic and yield data collected in IUNG Puławy, the whole EURO-ACCESS II has been verified. The plant submodel based on EPIC model was modified and suited to European conditions by INRA, Montpellier. The whole verification was conducted on the basis of daily climatic data. The error analysis shows that, during 1985-1990 period when model was calibrated estimated yield error was 22,5%-, for the period 1984 and 1991 1993 where model was verified the yield error was 8.0%. For the whole period of simulation the error was 15.3%.

Opis:
The increase in cases of food borne illnesses related to street vended fruit salad in developing countries is of serious public health concern. This study was, therefore, conducted on street-vended fruit salad, to determine their microbial quality. A total of twenty (20) fruit samples, comprising five each of fresh Apple (Malus domestica Borkh), Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.), Pawpaw (Carica papaya) and Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) were collected from 3 different locations (Watt, Marian and Goldie) in Calabar and were evaluated by way of standard plate techniques, for microbial contaminants. The specific microbial genera were enumerated on appropriate selective media and identified using standard identification parameters with the aid of identification and taxonomic manuals. The results revealed that the mean total bacterial counts of all the fruit samples ranged from 1.07 × 103 to 3.4 × 103CFU/g, whereas, the mean total coliform counts ranged from 0.9 × 103 to 2.05 × 103 CFU/g, respectively. The differences in the mean total heterotrophic counts and coliform counts recorded for the fruits collected from the respective food vendors was statistically insignificant (P>0.01). Bacteria isolated include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp, Shigella sp, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli. The presence of coliform bacteria and other microbial contaminants in numbers exceeding the recommended microbiological standards is a reflection of unwholesome product, hence the need for proper microbiological safety analysis of fruit salad prepared for human consumption. Therefore, consumer’s awareness on the dangers of consuming pathogen contaminated foods and the need to insist on properly processed/stored sliced produce, needs to be re-awakened.

Coconut oil is a source of fat which still sparks controversies when it comes to function. Some stated it can worsen lipid profile which then play an important role as a risk factor of cardiovascular disease. This cross sectional study was conducted in Indonesia involving 57 participants who used coconut oil as a predominant source of fat. Body mass index, physical activity and dietary intake were considered as subject characteristics. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-c, HDL-c were determined by using the enzymatic method and Apo A1 were determined by using immunoturbidometry method. Result implied normal range of lipid profile and 78.95% of the subjects have optimal LDL-c/HDL-c ratio. Majority of the subjects (61.4%) have acceptable level of Apo A1, it showed that they have good HDL-c level. These results are consistent with other studies that support beneficial effect of coconut oil on lipid profile.

Opis:
Purpose This study focuses on one of the key design aspects of mine ventilation fans, i.e. the selection of an appropriate aerofoil blade profile for the fan blades in order to enhance the energy efficiency of axial flow mine ventilation fans, using CFD simulations. Methods Computational simulations were performed on six selected typical aerofoil sections using CFD code ANSYS Fluent 6.3.26 at angles of attack varying from 0 to 21 at an interval of 3 and at Reynolds number Re = 3 × 106, and various aerody-namic parameters, viz. coefficients of lift (Cl) and drag (Cd) as a function of angle of attack (α) were determined to assess the efficiency of the aerofoils. Results The study revealed that the angle of attack has a significant effect on the lift and drag coefficients and stall condition oc-curred at α values of 12 and 15 in most of the aerofoils. Based on the criterion of higher lift to drag ratio (Cl/Cd), a blade profile was chosen as the most efficient one for mine ventilation fans. Practical implications This study forms a basis for selecting appropriate blade profiles for the axial flow fans used for ventilation in mining industry. Originality/ value The application of an appropriate aerofoil blade profile will impart energy efficiency to the mine ventilation fans and thereby result in energy saving in mine ventilation.

Opis:
The objective of the research study was to determine the pomological characteristics and chemical composition of ‘Karpatia’ Rosa pomifera fruits. Immediately after harvesting, the fruits were frozen and freeze-dried. The nutrients and selected groups of poly-phenols were determined in the flesh and seeds. The composition of fatty acid was determined in the oils obtained from the seeds. It was proved that the flesh contained 90 % of total carbohydrates in the dry mass; 31.9 % thereof was a dietary fibre. Moreover, the flesh was characterized by a high quantity of vitamin C: 3.5 %. Next, the seeds contained 79 % of total carbohydrates in the dry mass; 71.3 % thereof was a dietary fibre. The seeds were characterized by a significant content of fat (10.5 %) and protein (9.6 %). The oil obtained from the seeds comprised 80 % of polyunsaturated fatty acids; the α-linolenic acid constituted 31.3 % of total fatty acids. Their content was higher than that in the seeds of other native rose cultivars. Among the polyphenolic compounds, the flavanols predominated, both in the flesh and the seeds; their mean quantity was 2783 mg/100 g d.m. and 842 mg/100 g d.m., respectively. Furthermore, there were present: quercetin and kaempferol glycosides and free and bound ellagic acid. The ‘Karpatia’ Rosa pomifera can be considered a valuable cultivar in food processing owing to the following pomological features: large fruits, high percent content of flesh, one-time harvest, and, also, content of bioactive compounds, i.e. vitamin C and poly-phenols.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS-TS) is a new condition that has emerged in children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many clinical signs and symptoms resemble those found in Kawasaki disease (KD). Material and methods. The following data were considered: clinical presentation, comorbidities, laboratory findings, abnormalities in additional tests, exposure to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the child and his family members, applied treatment and return to full health. Results. In the presented study nineteen children were analyzed. Fever was a universal finding in our group and it’s mean duration was 7 days (range 5-9). Other common symptoms included abdominal pain and severe weakness (in 89.5%), rash and conjunctivitis (in 84.2%), vomiting (in 73.7%) and mucous membrane involvement (in 63.2%). In nearly half of cases, echocardiography revealed fluid in the pericardial sac and left ventricular systolic dysfunction (in 52.6% and 47.4% respectively). 21.1% of patients had coronary artery abnormalities. 26,3% of the children required treatment with dopamine and/or milrinone. In 15.7% ICU admissions and assisted ventilation was necessary. No deaths were recorded. Conclusion. One should bear in mind that PIMS-TS can mimic KD, appendicitis and meningitis, which may pose a diagnostic challenge.

Introduction. An important way of preventing type 2diabetes is by adopting a proper diet by which means appropriate control over blood glycaemia and lipids can be achieved. Objectives. To assess selected biochemical and haematological markers in overweight subjects or those suffering from type 2 diabetes in relation to their estimated dietary intake. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2012 on n=86 overweight or obese subjects living in Warsaw or its environs, of whom n=43 had type 2 diabetes. Dietary intakes were compared between non-diabetics (control group) and diabetics (test group) by 3 day records, whilst the relevant blood biochemistry and haematology results were obtained from medical records; with patient consent. Results. Diabetic subjects had significantly higher serum glucose and CRP levels than controls, respectively; 190 vs 98 mg/ dl and 1.4 vs 1.1 mg/dl. Lipid profiles were however more significantly abnormal in controls, compared to diabetics with respectively; total cholesterol 220 vs 194 mg/dl, LDL-cholesterol 131 vs 107 mg/dl and triglycerides 206 vs 157 mg/dl. There were no significant differences in HDL-cholesterol; respectively 55 vs 51 mg/dl. In the diabetics, calorific intakes from carbohydrates, especially sugars, were significantly lower than controls i.e. 9% vs 13%. The proportional share of calories derived from dietary fats did not differ between groups, nevertheless a positive correlation was observed between dietary fat content with blood cholesterol concentrations in diabetics. Conclusions. Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism were confirmed in both overweight and diabetic (type 2) subjects. In addition, both groups demonstrated untoward lipid profiles that correlated with their improper nutrition.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badanie przeprowadzono w 2012 roku, wśród 86 mieszkańców Warszawy i okolic, z nadwaga i otyłością, w tym u 43 osób z cukrzycą. Do oceny sposobu żywienia wykorzystano metodę trzydniowego bieżącego notowania. Wnioski. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają występowanie zaburzeń gospodarki węglowodanowej u pacjentów z nadmierną masą ciała oraz cukrzycą typu 2. Ponadto w badanych grupach zaobserwowano niekorzystny profil lipidowy korelujący z ich nieprawidłowym sposobem żywienia.

Lean duplex stainless steels are ferritic-austenitic steel, and they present the excellent corrosion resistance of austenite steel and the high mechanical behaviour of ferrite steel. General important corrosion problems in duplex stainless steels at 475°C have been already detected. Although the worst temperature is 475°C, corrosion can still form at lower or higher temperatures. The purpose of this work was to ascertain how 30-minutes isothermal heat treatments at 485°C and corrosion time effect the relative mass loss and profile roughness parameters of X2CrNiN23-4 lean duplex stainless steel. The real critical temperature for researching steel was determinate by the DSC method. Corrosion tests were conducted in a nitric acid medium by the measurement of loss in mass (Huey test). The corrosive media was boiling nitric acid V 65%. The corrosion rate of the X2CrNiN23-4 steel was measured in mm/year and in g/m2.
Badanie korozyjne (ubytku masy) prowadzono w środowisku kwasu azotowego V 65% w temperaturze wrzenia (test Huey). Prędkość korozji stali X2CrNiN23-4 określono w mm/rok i w g/m2.

Opis:
This Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) study is currently one of a main sub-research in radio astronomy in Malaysia. The main objective of this monitoring is to test and qualify the potential of radio astronomical sources that can be observed in Malaysia generally. Analysis process focuses at indoor and outdoor of Faculty of Applied Sciences, UITM Shah ALAM, Malaysia (latitude: 03°06.534’N, longitude: 101°50.396’E). There are three mobile network communications that operate at the upper band frequency of 1800MHz, which are Maxis (1805-1830 MHz), Celcom (1830-1855 MHz) and Digi (1855-1880 MHz) for GSM/LTE network. We observed that both sites having the highest and second highest peak at the same frequency of 420 MHz and 1835 MHz with the same source, which were due to mobile application followed by the lowest peak due to radio navigation satellite. We verified that the source of RFI of 1835 MHz at the Faculty of Applied Sciences may come from Celcom mobile telecommunication network signal because there is transmitter on top of two Celcom towers. This observation must be continuously done to ensure that RFI level does not increase drastically and to ensure that allocation spectrum band that was reserved for radio astronomy activities was always protected.
