This article has two aims: the cognitive one and the methodological one. The first one focuses on delineating city areas (of Łódź in this case), in relation to which a conscious parking policy should be implemented, including differentiation of the base parking fee and dynamics of parking cost increment in time. The methodological aim, in turn, consists in elaborating a research algorithm based exclusively on the geographical information system, which is based on generally available vector data, together with data obtained from intelligent transport systems. For their realization of the authors of this article elaborated their own methodology. It consists of five stages. The basic research unit is the surveying district. The area on the basis of which the research was made is the Łódź urban zone defined in the Strategy of Spatial Development for Łódź (2012). Each research stage corresponds to defining the power of impact of the variable which, as an research overview shows, affects the parking policy. Since the research is conducted on the basis different variables at individual stages and finally the coefficient assumes the form of five elements, it is necessary to standardize partial results. The article uses a procedure based on the quotient of the difference between the calculated value and the average for the whole group, divided by standard deviation. The results of the conducted research in the cognitive scope show that problems connected with parking organization do not concern only the very city centre (mostly the district of Śródmieście). Particular attention should be drawn to areas next to the city’s main transport arteries which go latitudinally (for instance, Piłsudski avenue) or meridionally (e.g. Kościuszki street, Zachodnia street).

The article presents the research project “Pandemic diaries” carried out by a team working under the scientific supervision of prof. Wiesław Gumuła. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Literature in Krakow, which in 2020 announced a literary competition for journals that were to be devoted to everyday life in pandemic conditions. Researchers adopted the theoretical perspective of the sociology of everyday life and the phenomenological one. The analysis concerned the categories appearing in dailies such as social change, social relations, time, death, tourism, economy and economy, and many others. The diaries have literary value and contain important social content that has become the subject of sociological analyzes broadening the knowledge about people’s lives in conditions of sudden and unexpected change.

Artykuł prezentuje założenia projektu badawczego mającego na celu opis kompetencji medialnych w duchu etnograficznym. Warunkiem wstępnym rozważań jest dobra operacjonalizacja centralnego pojęcia, obejmująca zarówno umiejętności techniczne, kreatywne, jak i krytyczne. Projekt skierowany do polskich 13–16-latków musi uwzględniać ponadto szczególną relację, która łączy ich z nowymi technologiami. Na podstawie analizy danych statystycznych pokazujemy, że atrakcyjne narzędzie powinno opierać się na połączeniu technologii z interesującym scenariuszem. Naszym zdaniem idealnym narzędziem jest multimedialny projekt edukacyjny, który zbiera dane z wykorzystaniem mechaniki grywalizacji. Artykuł kończymy rozważaniami na temat skuteczności tej strategii.
The article presents the outline of a research project aimed at exploring media competencies in an ethnographic manner. A prerequisite for such endeavor is a useful operationalization of the central concepts, including both technical, creative and critical skills. Moreover, the project targeted to Polish 13 to 16-year-olds must take into account their special relationship with new technologies. Based on the analysis of statistical data, we show that attractive tool should take advantage of a combination of technology with an interesting scenario. In our opinion, the perfect tool is a multimedia educational project that collects data using gamification mechanics. In conclusion, we investigate the effectiveness of this strategy.

In forest production, there is an emerging tendency towards the planting of fast-growing trees as attractive, renewable energy sources. Hence, efforts were made to develop a method of micropropagation by organogenesis of seven clones of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) that are resistant to propagation by traditional vegetative methods, as well as one plus tree (no. 9755) at the age of 60, to see if the age of the mother plant is a limitation in the micropropagation of black locust trees. Overall results suggest that Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 30 g l−1 sucrose, 0.6 mg l−1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.1 mg l−1 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) is better for the propagation of each genotype of R. pseudoacacia than Woody Plant Medium with the same growth regulators, and the age of the donor plant does not affect the organogenic potential. Recalcitrance to adventitious rooting from adventitious shoot formation is a major limitation for the clonal micropropagation of forest trees. Our results showed that although the roots were also formed spontaneously in the growth medium without growth hormones for the tested black locust clones, the application of auxin increased the total root length compared to that in the medium with active carbon and control. A significant effect of the additives of hormone and sucrose on the total root length was found. Increasing the sucrose concentration stimulated the induction of roots in each of the tested concentrations (5, 10, 15 or 20 g l−1). Additionally, the change in sugar dose in the rooting medium caused significant differences in total root length.

Mnimouria – a modest country cemetery plays an important role in the novels by Alexandros Papadiamantis. While the pretentious offi cial First Cemetery of Athens displays the wealth of the nouveaux riches who strive to imitate in an artifi cial and exaggerated manner various forms of tombs of the ancient Greek Kerameikos in an attempt to prove their ancient ancestry, Papadiamantis in his picture of Skiathos little koimeterion manages to place it both in the order of nature and in the world of culture. He shows us, sometimes not without a mild irony, how the old pagan beliefs and superstitions such as: evil-eye, curses, ghosts and apparitions still coexist harmoniously with sincere Christian faith of his simple compatriots in an island where one could hear the pipe of a young shepherd, who could have been perhaps a satyr, or glimpse a strange shape, possibly of a Nymph or a Naiad (neraida).

On 11 September 2001, the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City were destroyed in a terrorist attack. It was a disaster of immense political, social, cultural and economic consequences for the entire world. The WTC site, referred to as ‘Ground Zero’, needed to be restored, both physically and symbolically. The site’s redesign and rebuilding process took nearly 20 years and has now been completed. The article discusses the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City as museum vitae, describing it with two metaphors: cracking and continuing. The former refers to the WTC disaster cracking the human will to live and fight, and evoking reflection on the value system of the world attacked with such a brutal force. The latter, while allowing many possible interpretations, seems to hint at new ideas, information, contexts and understanding that may enrich our knowledge of the world. The entire site, with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, tells the story of the disaster that happened here as well as of the culture, values, meanings and strength of human community. Unfolding like a story in a book, it reveals different senses while leaving room for individual interpretation.

W latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku w Polsce obserwowano nasilenie procesów o charakterze strukturalnym. Wraz z pojawieniem się nowych społecznych i ekonomicznych reguł życia zaczęła się wyłaniać klasa średnia. Nowa zbiorowość okazała się kategorią silnie heterogeniczną i niejednorodną. Z owej zbiorowości wyodrębniła się specyficzna kategoria, którą można określić jako nową klasę średnią. Jej obraz jest silnie reprezentowany w polskich mediach, szczególnie w telewizyjnych programach o charakterze kulinarnym. Choć w sensie socjologicznym nowa klasa średnia nie stanowi klasy społecznej, a jest jedynie traktowana jako kategoria deskryptywna, to umożliwia ona opis przemian społecznych i kulturowych. Kultura kulinarna jest przestrzenią, umożliwiającą ukazanie charakterystycznych właściwości i wartości istotnych dla nowej klasy średniej. Programy kulinarne nie traktują o gotowaniu, ale mają rozbudzać ambicje przynależności do tej klasy społecznej. Promują przekaz, że właściwie każdy z telewidzów przy odrobinie wysiłku jest w stanie wieść atrakcyjne życie i przynależeć do owej uprzywilejowanej części polskiego społeczeństwa. Dziedzictwo kulinarne i przemiany kulinarne podobnie jak struktura społeczna ulegają przekształceniom. Kultura kulinarna jest ściśle powiązana z życiem społecznym i kulturowym, a kulinaria stanowią jeden z czynników strukturyzujących.
In the aftermath of 1989 Polish society faced many changes. The first changes were associated with the processes of implementing ready products of the western economy and culture. The implants presented new form of organization of social life. The implants provided designs, new styles of life, Western movies, popular television series, fast food restaurants, supermarkets, malls, Western corporations, and even new occupations and professions. I would like to examine the result of all these changes in Polish society, namely: how all of them changed people’s individual and collective lives and how the City changed under the influence of culinary culture and cooking shows on TV. I am also interested in how nowadays culinary culture is used to promote the values of consumerist society like competition, rivalry, pleasure and entertainment. I would like to present the examples of popular TV series “Cooked” and “The Kitchen Revolutions”. Both of them play very important roles in changing Polish attitudes to cuisine and its meaning in social life. They present the image of the new middle class which can be observed in culinary culture – the culinary television programs.
