The present article has to be understood as a first introduction on Maurice Maeterlinck’s influence on Bolesław Leśmian’s work in general. The topic being quite broad, the focus is on theater and more precisely on the connection between Pelleas and Melisande (1892) and Possessed Violin Player (1911–1912). In order to understand this intertextual parallel, biographical and historical context as well as theoretic and philosophical relations is also examined in the first and the second parts of the article. The comparison reveals striking connections, relying mainly on theater which aims to be exclusively suggestive.

Opis:
The biography of Boleslaw Lesmian (1877–1937) shows a maladjustment of artist to reality. The Poet escapes to the world of imagination — an alternative reality where he could be settled. In Boleslaw Lesmian’s imaginary the human way leads to the archetypal forest. The image of the forest, implanted deeply in culture as a place for outlaws (Robin Hood), fugitives (Tristan and Isolde) and knights-errant (Parsifal) is transformed by Lesmian. In the Lesmian’s imaginary the forest takes a new semantic dimension and becomes one of the main symbols as the Epiphany of the Mother Earth (Tellus Mater, Pammetor Ge). The analyses, presented in this article, shows that act of wandering in the forest paths is the symbol of a human way which leads to self-knowledge. For Lesmian, who was lost in everyday life, an archetypal figure of Mother Earth has an important therapeutic value. A methodological framework for the discussion is based on the concepts offered by Gilbert Durand, a French philosopher of culture. Anthropology of imagination as a method of literary studies focuses on mundus imaginalis of the author, understood as a manifestation of symbolic powers of imagination and the artist is perceived as an imaginative phenomenon. In the anthropological and myth-critical studies a canonical definition of myth is adopted after Gilbert Durand, where myth is a dynamic system of symbols (mythical figures), archetypes and imagery constituting narrations permanently incorporated into the culture. In Durand’s perspective, mythical figure (figure mythique) is an archetype imagery (image archétype) capable of being expressed at the language level. Imagination is understood as the Consciousness Breeding Imagery. Imagery provide a structure capable of transformations, enabling decomposition and transformation of imagery in cultural texts and their literary palingenesis.

The aim of the research was to extend the previous findings of different scholars concerning the emergence of Bolesław Leśmian’s literary output in Russia, particularly the Russia of today, by including the aspect of the Internet. The conducted analysis concerned both renowned Russian websites which present renditions of foreign literature into Russian and selected authorial websites publishing amateur translations as well as Internet sites which featured different kinds of comments about the Polish poet. The article also makes references to the issue of popularization of the Polish poet’s literary output and using this output as some grounds for new literary works or philosophical writing. It also gives a record of poems and vocal works devoted to Leśmian which came into being in the space of the Internet through creation of musical compositions to these texts, which undoubtedly proves the poet’s popularity among Russian-speaking Internet users.
Celem podjętych badań było uzupełnienie wcześniejszych ustaleń różnych badaczy o zaistnieniu twórczości Bolesława Leśmiana w Rosji, a przede wszystkim w Rosji dzisiejszej, o relację dotyczącą przestrzeni Internetu. Przeprowadzona analiza dotyczyła zarówno uznanych stron internetowych, prezentujących przekłady literatury obcojęzycznej na język rosyjski, jak i wybranych stron autorskich, na których zamieszczono amatorskie tłumaczenia, a także stron, na których pojawiły się różnego rodzaju wzmianki o polskim poecie. W artykule odniesiono się także do problematyki popularyzacji twórczości polskiego poety i wykorzystania tej twórczości jako podstawy dla własnych utworów literackich bądź wypowiedzi filozoficznych. Zostały w nim też odnotowane zaistniałe w przestrzeni Internetu, a poświęcone Leśmianowi wiersze oraz utwory wokalne, będące rezultatem stworzenia kompozycji muzycznych do tych tekstów, co niewątpliwie jest dowodem jego popularności wśród rosyjskojęzycznych internautów.

The paper discusses the phantasmatic scenarios of love triangle in Bolesław Leśmian’s writing: presentation of relations of one man and two women. The following short stories: “The Witch” and “Mayka” from Polish Fables, and The Adventures of Sindbad the Sailor are analyzed, as well as two dramas: The Demoniac Fiddler and The Savagery of Posthumous Mores. These works are discussed as realization of modern gnosis, as forms of opposition against normative discourses of power and as performative texts, calling the readers to change their lives.

Bolesław Leśmian enjoy unflagging popularity this days. Because of that, I tried to revalue Legends of longing, which appeared in researches as a rader modest, early works than valid mile stone in writing practise of Leśmian. To do so, I’ve read them mostly in hermeneutical way.

Artykuł prezentuje uwagi na temat roli dwóch miast w życiu i twórczości Bolesława Leśmiana. Istotnym punktem odniesienia są listy poety, pisane do Zenona Przesmyckiego. Ich analiza pozwala zrozumieć, jak atmosfera miasta, przestrzeń, kulturowa działalność wpłynęły na życiowe i artystyczne wybory autora Sadu rozstajnego. Kijów – ze swoją specyfiką, historią – był dla Leśmiana swoistym locus coeruleus. Poeta nie mógł zaakceptować atmosfery stagnacji, szukał więc alternatyw, pragnął zmian. Wbrew pozorom miasto to odegrało jednak istotną twórczą rolę. Barwna Ukraina, duchowość znalazły interesujące odniesienie m.in. w cyklach poezji (Oddaleńcy, Aniołowie). Inną rolę odegrał Paryż, który olśnił poetę nowoczesnością, ruchem, gwarem, tajemnicą. Leśmian, który większość tomów poetyckich opublikował w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym, był symbolistą równie doskonałym jak francuscy poeci (np. Stefan Mallarmé, Oskar Miłosz).
The article presents comments on the role of two cities in the life and work of Bolesław Leśmian. An important point of reference are the poet’s letters to Zenon Przesmycki. Their analysis allows us to understand how the atmosphere of the city, space and cultural activities influenced the life and artistic choices of the author of Sad Rozstajny. Kyiv – with its specificity and history, was a kind of locus coeruleus for Leśmian. The poet could not accept the atmosphere of stagnation, so he looked for alternatives, he wanted changes. Contrary to appearances, the city played an important, creative role. Colorful Ukraine and spirituality found an interesting reference in e.g. in poetry cycles (Distants, Angels). A different role was played by Paris, which dazzled the poet with its modernity, movement, bustle and mystery. Leśmian, who published most of his volumes of poetry in the interwar period, was a symbolist as perfect as the French poets (e.g. Stefan Mallarmé, Oskar Miłosz).

The article explores multi-dimensional sensitivity to the void as a major feature of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry. The author distinguishes those stylistic devices which extract, on the level of language, the the feeling of non-fullness, absence, or nonexistence in Leśmian’s poems. Apophatic language translates itself into the issue of nonexistence seen as meaningful lack. The article focuses not so much on the category of the negation of existence as on independent, fixed, affective type of experience. The author inquires what happens with the poetic voice confronted with the Other in a situation experiencing pain resulting from lack. Empathetic co-feeling of “I” with the other turns out to be the most important state. The moment someone else’s pain is discovered, feelings change into the affective state which cannot be either realized or described. The I-Other-void confrontation brings about an affect. The empathetic “I” meets the Other who experiences various kinds of absence. The Other’s feelings become recognized and even, to some extent, defined by the person who speaks in the text but the affect happens afterwards. The emphatic confrontation and co-feeling destruct the coherent voice and the text itself for it causes that kind of unspeakable experience that cannot be realized, expressed or represented. This is an experience not-to-be-named.
Lektura poezji Bolesława Leśmiana pozwala wskazać zasadniczą cechę w postaci wielowymiarowego uwrażliwienia na brak. W liryce autora Sadu rozstajnego wyróżniam te zabiegi, które wydobywają już na poziomie językowym poczucie niepełni, nieobecności, nieistnienia. Apofatyczność języka przekłada się na problem niebytu jako braku znaczącego. Zajmuję się brakiem nie tyle jako kategorią zaprzeczenia istnienia, ile raczej jako samodzielnym, ukonstytuowanym, afektywnym rodzajem przeżycia. Zastanawiam się, co dzieje się z „ja” mówiącym, które konfrontuje się z innym w sytuacji przeżywania bólu wynikającego z braku. Najbardziej istotne okazuje się empatyczne współodczuwanie „ja” z innym. W momencie odkrycia cudzego bólu następuje stan afektywny, który nie podlega już ani uświadomieniu, ani opisaniu. Zderzenie na osi „ja” – inny – brak przynosi i stwarza afekt. Empatycznie nakierowane „ja” liryczne zderza się z innym, który przeżywa brak. Odczucia nnego zostają przez osobę mówiącą w tekście – do pewnego przynajmniej stopnia – rozpoznane, a nawet nazwane. Dopiero w tym, co rozgrywa się później, upatruję stanu afektywnego. Empatyczne zderzenie i współodczuwanie wybija „ja” z samego siebie, rozbija czasami tekst – doprowadza bowiem do przeżycia, które plasuje się poniżej uświadomionego, tym bardziej wyrażonego i wreszcie niewyrażalnego. Jest przeżyciem nie-do-nazwania.

The complex and mysterious story of Bolesław Leśmian’s drama Vasilij Buslaev has led some scholars to doubt the very existence of the piece. The correspondence of Maksim Gor’kij may help to solve the mystery. The authoritative Russian writer acted as a reviewer when the decision to accept or reject this play for print was to be taken. Once Gor’kij had read the manuscript, the piece was returned to the author, who was informed that it would not be published. Unfortunately, its fate thereafter remains unknown.

The author attempts to demonstrate that the poem "Eliasz" by Bolesław Leśmian has cognitive character. She devotes a lot of attention to the connections between Leśmian poetry and realistic symbolism. Part of the article concerns the poet’s description of the netherworld. Furthermore, it inquires whether the poem accomplishes the ultimate pursuit of poetry – remaining open to one true reality, free of individualism and intellectual constraints. Eventually, the interpretation demonstrates how, through a detached protagonist – "Eliasz", Leśmian begins to doubt the power of poetry to bring one back to primeval cognitive context, to such state of mind where reality is experienced directly through intuition and imagination.

The topic of this paper is the golden dust metaphor in Bolesław Leśmian’s poems, fairy-tale prose, essays and plays. It is interpreted as one of many variations of the black sun trope, the gnostic and alchemical symbol for the unity of oppositions and for transformation. Analysis of Leśmian’s metaphor leads to the conclusion that his writing corresponds to gnosticism and alchemy. It takes up the concept of material concreteness, nudging the reader to combine oppositions and transmutation. Acting through words, through tropes, reflects the performative status of Leśmian’s creative work.
