Opis:
Black holes entered scientific literature as early as at the end of eighteenth century. They had been known at that time as dark stars, but their concept did not find its way to physics or astronomy, and had been abandoned for more than one hundred years. I shall sketch historical developments and discuss present mathematical and observational status of black holes.

Opis:
The article entitled “'Superreal images for SUPERREAL People.' Black Self-Representation as Self-Invention in Poetry and Visual Art of the Black Arts Movement: The Wall of Respect” provides an analysis of the representation of African Americans by Black Arts Movement poets and visual artists involved in making the Wall of Respect, the most famous Black Power mural. Resisting, challenging and rejecting the controlling white gaze, through their verbal and visual acts of self-representation, they made an attempt to achieve a “better and truer self” for American blacks, which resulted in black myth-making and self-invention. That phenomenon is explored here through an examination of the history, legend and aesthetics of the mural, which is approached as a multimedia Poem of the People, whose interplay of various artistic forms of expression is aimed at liberation from the oppressiveness of white cultural hegemony, achieving “visibility,” and practicing “truly black” image-making. More specifically, special attention is given to its literary component – Amiri Baraka's poem “SOS,” which is embedded in the mural, and two poems entitled “The Wall,” written for that occasion by Haki Madhubuti and Gwendolyn Brooks, the latter poem read at the opening ceremony by its author. Detailed reading of the poems demonstrates how the written/spoken word assisted and enhanced visual black self-invention and projected-cum-generated a sense of togetherness and collective identification by creating an ultra-positive image of “new blacks,” and stigmatizing “negro toms” who stood for old-fashioned integrationism. Also, through condensed references to theories pertaining to the nature of image, visual representation and the power of the gaze (by Plato, Heidegger, Sartre and Lacan), put together with concepts of African American culture and expression (Houston Baker Jr.'s “the Black (W)hole” and Robert Stepto's “immersion”), philosophical aspects of the Black Arts Movement's artistic strategy of black self-invention as well as its limitations are explored.

Opis:
This article explores the ways gender and race influenced the FBI’s surveillance of Black women activists. Previous scholarship has covered the role of surveillance in repressing revolutionary movements and neutralizing radical organizations. Historically, within many social movements, Black women have been marginalized, silenced, or reduced to only their gender because of patriarchal leadership. As a result, the persistence of sexism within these Black movements has affected Black women’s visibility within movement organizations. This piece asks, how does gendered marginalization impact their surveillance by and visibility to the FBI? It seeks to understand the influence of race and gender on the FBI’s surveillance of Louise Thompson Patterson. By examining the language and narrative components of her FBI file, the article provides an analysis across gender and across time to theorize the dynamics of surveillance, race, and gender. Based on a close analysis of Patterson’s FBI file, I argue that the tension between hypervisibility and invisibility deriving from gendered stereotypes resulted in the Bureau’s vague understanding of her personal life and political ideology.

The article focuses on the issue of Satanism of the so-called second wave of black metal, which emerged in the 1990s. Its major goal is the analysis of this phenomenon, on the basis of source materials, such as interviews with musicians or lyrics, which leads to the formulation of answers to the main research questions: what were the distinctive features of black metal Satanism on the level of doctrine, and how this doctrine influenced the practice of life; was this version of Satanism internally coherent, what was the attitude of black metal Satanists to other contemporary concepts of Satanism, and what were the main sources of their inspiration.

Afrofuturism plays an important part in the cultural landscape of contemporary american, african, and african-american culture, being integral to the popular culture also in other modern societies (afropean culture). Afrofuturism is, as Ytasha L. Womack wrote, “an intersection of imagination, technology, the future and liberation”. The aim of this work is to shed light on the depiction of science, art, culture and future in afrofuturism. The essay focuses on the use of scientific discourse in afrofuturistic narratives (novels, movies, graphic novels, musical works). The question is: Is afrofuturism also interpretive research and the critical theory of a culture?

Considering the analogy between classical thermodynamic parameters and black hole parameters, the four laws of thermodynamics are reinterpreted for Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes. A simple model for the dynamic relationships was obtained by considering the surface area of the outer horizon of a Kerr and Kerr-Neumann black hole as the area of a perfect black body. Finding the conditions these black holes should satisfy, the equations were numerically solved and simulated for the Hawking temperature, Hawking radiation and entropy variations of Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes. The Hawking temperature and Hawking radiation of a given rotating black hole drastically increases at the final stage of the black hole evaporation. In the meantime, the entropy of a rotating black hole drastically decreases through the time. The additional angular momentum and the charge effects gain high Hawking temperatures and high Hawking radiation values for the black holes while these effects reduce the entropy of the black holes.

Hair for African Black people has always had meaning. In the past, elaborate hairstyles communicated their status, identity, and place within the larger society. In present day society, hair continues to be a significant part of being an African Black person. Especially for women, who attach a number of different meanings to hair. This study casts more light on young African Black women’s everyday perceptions of hair and uncovers the meanings they attach to hair and beauty. This is done by looking at how the intersections of race, gender, and class impact on their everyday perceptions and experiences of hair. The literature indicates that the hair preferences and choices of Black African women tend to emulate Western notions of beauty. This is due to a great extent to the historical link between Black hair and “bad” hair associated with old slave days. But, the narratives of participants contradict this normative discourse in many ways and provide new insights on hair — insights that reflect and motivate antiracist aesthetics.

In socialist Poland, in the reality of centrally planned economy, average citizens experienced chronic deficits of basic commodities. Although the intensity of the problem varied, at no time could one say that the official market fully satisfied the demand for basic or luxurious goods sought by citizens. On the one hand, the market was steered manually, prices were set and kept on the same level for many years, and the volume of production and its cost was centrally planned, but on the other hand, salaries in national companies were raised, which resulted in unsatisfied demand for the goods that the official market lacked. How, then, did average citizens deal with these problems? How, by committing more or less serious financial crimes, did they become players in the black market game, the stake of which was satisfying their own needs? This article attempts at describing the situation in this specific market in various periods of socialist Poland. It also tries to demonstrate which products were the most desirable and most often sold in the black market. Most citizens of socialist Poland, knowing that their behavior is against the law, limited their participation in the black market to purchasing or selling the most urgently needed products.

Tea is the most common beverage in the world. It is consumed mostly as green tea, oolong, or black tea. Depending on the manufacturing process, different varieties of tea can be produced. As tea is one of the most popular beverages, it could be a tremendously important source of polyphenolic constituents. Tea leaves are a source of polyphenols, especially catechins, which are known for their antioxidative activity. Various studies suggest that polyphenolic compounds present in black tea are associated with beneficial effects in prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, anti-aging, antidiabetic and many other health beneficial effects associated with tea consumption have been reported. The review highlights the potential of black tea, its health benefits in terms of antioxidative, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties as well as protective agents against cardiovascular diseases.

Opis:
The paper describes an adaptive control system of the waves, implemented in the Ship Design and Research Centre, CTO S.A. The purpose of generating the waves in the towing tank is the modelling of the environmental conditions during hydrodynamic model tests. The tests are performed on scale models of towed or free running ships, anchored structures like oil rigs or bottommounted structures, e.g. wind turbines. In the towing tank of CTO S.A., the waves are generated using a flap-type wavemaker with hydraulic drive. The adaptive control system includes gain scheduling and Black-Box model. It has been developed and implemented using the 32-bit embedded system and computer application (C#.NET). The Black-Box model was proposed as a simple solution allowing compensating the hydromechanical phenomena affecting the generated waves, i.e. disintegration, reflection, damping and nonlinear energy transfer. The solution proved to be sufficient to generate required wave spectra with expected accuracy in a user-friendly manner.
Adaptacyjne sterowanie falą basenową obejmuje harmonogramowanie wzmocnienia i model typu Black-Box. Opracowany system sterowania został implementowany w 32-bitowym systemie wbudowanym i aplikacji komputerowej w języku C# w środowisku .NET. Wprowadzony model typu Black-Box uwzględnia efekty hydromechanicznych procesów i zjawisk – m. in. rozpadu, odbicia, tłumienia i nieliniowego transferu energii – które mają wpływ na generowane fale. Przedstawione rozwiązanie pozwala w prosty sposób i z oczekiwaną dokładnością modelować zadane widma fal basenowych.

The article focuses on the diversity of attitudes that Black churches presented toward the social protest of the civil rights era. Although their activity has been often perceived only through the prism of Martin Luther King’s involvement, in fact they presented many different attitudes to the civil rights campaigns. They were never unanimous about social and political engagement and their to various responses to the Civil Rights Movement were partly connected to theological divisions among them and the diversity of Black Christianity (a topic not well-researched in Poland). For years African American churches served as centers of the Black community and fulfilled many functions of ethnic churches (as well as of other ethnic institutions), but the scope of these functions varied greatly – also during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to analyze the whole spectrum of Black churches’ attitudes to the civil rights protests, paying special attention to the approaches and strategies that are generally less known.

Black women do not want to become white women because they know that this is impossible. Yet, some black women straighten and curl their naturally kinky hair, or wear hair extensions, weaves and wigs that resemble Caucasian hair. Still, they recognize that hair is only one attribute of their Being and that even if they choose to wear non-African hairstyles, they can concurrently embrace other aspects of their black identity. So, is this a matter of cultural assimilation or integration, or is there a deeper ontological problematic underlying these cross-racial hair styling choices? I interrogate three arguments that black women usually advance for their hairstyling choices – the survival strategy argument, the protective styling argument, and the options-choice argument. I use Mabogo Percy More’s interpretation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s concepts of “the Look,” “facticity,” and “bad faith” to analyze Black women’s hair consciousness through the lens of his “Politics of Being” concept.

Application of sulfometuron and imazapyr was unable to control some of the resistant biotypes in this study. This result implies that resistance in these populations is due to a target site mechanism. The A. myosuroides biotypes resistant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides varied in their responses to derivatives of aryloxy-phenoxy-propionic acid (FOPs), cyclohexanediones (DIMs) and phenylpyrazolines (DENs). Resistant biotypes of A. myosuroides that could not be controlled with fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (FOP) and pinoxaden (DEN) were controlled with clethodim (DIM).

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyse the phenomenon of corpse pain, a style of stage make-up used by black metal bands developed in Norway in the 1990s. Black metal is a subgenre of rock music. Its relationship with violence is very complex and hardly obvious. The focal point of the culture that has developed around this genre is an independent subject whose functioning is based on the categories of agency, power, and domination perceived through the prism of masculinity. Such a subjectivity emerges from the consolidation of artists’ stage and non-stage lives, and needs to have its authenticity constantly confirmed. One way to authenticate it is through the use of corpse paint. This type of stage make-up connects musicians with the content they symbolise and seek to embody. The subject is born out of the performative act of merging with corpse paint. This specific make-up may be perceived as a stage mask originating from ancient theatre. The juxtaposition of corpse paint and a theatrical mask highlights the process that leads to the creation of a black metal subject while revealing its dark sides. One of them is masculinity based on the exclusion of others. In its most extreme manifestations it reaches out for elements of fascist or racist ideologies only to reassert its power and advantage, and thus strengthen its position in the world.

The instantaneous primary emission spectra of particles radiating from Schwarzschild black holes and maximally rotating Kerr black holes of masses 1013 – 1015 g were investigated and C code, BlackHawk was used for the simulations. From a Schwarzschild black hole of mass 3.53×1013 g, gluons had the lowest cutoff energy, 199 MeV. The emission spectra were dominated by coloured particles, quarks having with the highest overall emission rate, 2.826×1022 GeV-1s-1 at energy 1.205 GeV. The leptons e±, μ±, τ± showed similar variation in emission rates. The only particles emitted with energies below the rest mass of u quarks were neutrinos, photons, and e±. At greater particle energies (> ~ 2 GeV) the emission rates of all particles were almost equivalent. The emission of vector bosons, Z0 and W± were negligible and became significant when the mass reduced to ~1011 g and then gluons, W±, Z0 and photons were emitted similar to each other with a peak at energy, 280 GeV. The emitting rates of gluons, quarks, neutrinos, W±, e±, μ±, τ±, Z0, photons, and Higgs bosons are in decreasing order respectively. As the mass of the black hole is reduced to 1.06×108 g, quarks were emitted at the highest rate 2.826×1022 GeV-1s-1 at 4010 GeV peak energy and at energies between rest mass energy of Higgs boson and 1.25×105 GeV, the emission of Higgs bosons exceeded the emission of quarks. For maximally rotating Kerr black hole of mass 3.53×1013 g, W±, Z0 and Higgs boson were emitted at higher emission rates 1012 – 1015 GeV-1s-1 and for mass 1.06×108 g, the gluons had the highest overall emission rate at the peak energy. At extremely high energies, the gluon emission rates are less than the emission rates of Higgs bosons, quarks, neutrinos, and e±, μ±, τ±. The spin-dependent behaviour of spectra is also present.

Opis:
The main purpose of the article is to present a new definition of an extreme music genre, namely black metal, based on the linguistic theory of prototypes. This necessity eventuates from its expansion, as a result of which the genre (specifically: its forms) is blowing up from within. In the face of diversity of black metal songs and the fact that all of traditional black metal’s main features could be invalidated by the opposing work of one of contemporary bands, a new, more capacious model of a definition is needed. The presented model is a prototypical categorisation derived from a postmodern linguistic paradigm.

Opis:
The article assumes a type of comparative-sensual experiment based on the concept of the esoteric emblem, and the form of artistic expression which is ‘The Black Square’ by Kazimir Malevich. By applying one concept to another, a positive result is obtained, which suggests another way of interpreting this suprematic painting,as an imaginary experience.
