    The aim of the article is the analysis of the heroes, themes and motives of Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People present in Lives of Saints by Piotr Skarga. The Polish author of the 16th-17th centuries refers to selected characters, stories and themes as sources of role models and for polemical purposes. Bede’s heroes: bishops, missionaries, the religious, secular rulers, serve as examples for the implementation of the specific virtues. Selected motives of the chronicle treated by Skarga – in most cases – with fidelity to the original, are intended to show not only the distant reality unknown to the Polish reader, but also the characters and events meaningful in the post-Trent period.

    In the famous work Historia ecclesiastica in Book IV of Chapter 24 Bede the Venerable (672/3-735), an Anglo-Saxon monk and a Doctor of the Church, wrote about the religious brother named Cædmon. Earlier Cædmon avoided secular singing, when he worked as a keeper of draft animals, but God gave him the gift of singing for the glory of God. This man adapted to the monastery by the abbess Hilda arranged in his native language – under the influence of God-Creator inspiration and downloading theological sciences – pious songs connected with biblical events and various theological threads. In this way he encouraged people to convert and strengthen their faith. None of Cædmon’s followers matched him with talent. The notes of Bede may testify not only to strong monasticism at the very beginning of Anglo-Saxon Christianity, but also to care for religious songs, probably the beginning of Gregorian chant in England.  
    Beda Czcigodny (Wielebny), uczony mnich anglosaski i Doktor Kościoła z przełomu VII/VIII wieku, w słynnym dziele Historia ecclesiastica w księdze IV rozdziale 24. napisał o bracie zakonnym, Cedmonie. Wcześniej – gdy Cedmon pracował jako opiekun zwierząt pociągowych – unikał on świeckich śpiewów. Bóg dał mu jednak dar śpiewania ku chwale Bożej. Przyjęty do klasztoru przez przeoryszę Hildę układał w ojczystym języku – pod wpływem natchnienia Boga-Stwórcy i pobierając nauki z zakresu teologii – pieśni pobożne związane z wydarzeniami biblijnymi i różnymi wątkami teologicznymi. Pobudzał w ten sposób ludzi do nawrócenia i umocnienia wiary. Żaden z naśladowców Cedmona mu nie dorównał talentem. Zapis Bedy może świadczyć nie tylko o silnym monastycyzmie w samych początkach anglosaskiego chrześcijaństwa, ale i o dbałości o śpiewy religijne, stanowiące prawdopodobnie początki chorału gregoriańskiego w Anglii.

    Celem niniejszej pracy jest prezentacja oraz omówienie treści starożytnych komentarzy do Drugiego i Trzeciego Listu św. Jana. Te dwa krótkie listy należą do najrzadziej czytanych i komentowanych ksiąg Nowego Testamentu. To samo, choć może nawet w jeszcze większym stopniu można powiedzieć o nielicznych starożytnych komentarzach do tych listów. Czytając dzieła Klemensa Aleksandryjskiego, Dydyma Ślepego, Bedy Czcigodnego, Ekumeniusza czy też Hilarego z Arles, można zauważyć, że komentując Drugi i Trzeci List Janowy koncentrowali się oni przede wszystkim na okolicznościach ich powstania i dociekali, kto dokładnie jest ich adresatem oraz co można ustalić na temat tożsamości wymienionych w nich osób. W ich komentarzach nie brakuje jednak również tematów teologicznych. Wychodząc od czasem pozornie nie związanych w teologią fragmentów listów, poruszali tematy teologiczne właściwe bardziej ich czasom niż czasom apostolskim. Wśród takich tematów można wymienić paruzję Chrystusa, realność Jego wcielenia lub relację Syna Bożego i Boga Ojca. W kręgu zainteresowania egzegetów pozostaje również konieczność zachowywania prawdziwej wiary oraz odcięcia się od heretyków, którzy ją zniekształcają.
    The purpose of this paper is to present the content of the ancient commentaries on the Second and Third Epistles of Saint John the Apostle. These two short letters are some of the least read and commented on in the New Testament. The same, though perhaps even more so, can be said of the few ancient commentaries of these letters. Reading the works of Clement of Alexandria, Didymus the Blind, Bede the Venerable, Oecumenius or Hilary of Arles we notice that when commenting the Second and the Third Epistles of John they focused primarily on the circumstances of their creation and enquire as to the identity to whom the Epistles were addressed, and the identity of the other people mentioned in the text. However, their comments also include theological themes. Sometimes starting from seemingly unrelated theological passages in the Epistles, they dealt with theological themes more appropriate to their own time rather than to the apostolic time. Among such topics we can mention the parousia of Christ, the reality of His incarnation and the relationship of the Son of God with God the Father. Within this circle also remains the exegetes’ interest in the necessity of preserving the true faith and of dissociating themselves from heretics who distort it.

    The article presents the universe in cosmology of the Venerable Bede, British scholar of the eighth century. Bede’s description of the world as whole was made by the knowledge of ancient (Pliny the Elder) and Christian (St. Isidore of Seville). Geocentric cosmos conceived as a system of fixed stars and the planets on the circles. Celestial bodies are made of fire. On Earth, there are four elements. Bede was interested in philosophy of nature and enrichment of scientific knowledge with the theological reflection. Cosmology of Bede represents an important stage of development of science in Western Christianity in the early Middle Ages.
    Artykuł przedstawia wszechświat w kosmologii Bedy Czcigodnego, brytyjskiego uczonego z VIII wieku. Beda opisywał świat za pomocą elementów wiedzy antycznej (Pliniusz Starszy) i chrześcijańskiej (św. Izydor z Sewilli). Kosmos pojmował jako geocentryczny system gwiazd osadzonych na sferze niebieskiej i planet krążących na okręgach. Ciała niebieskie zbudowane są z ognia. Na Ziemi występują cztery żywioły. Będą interesuje się przyrodoznawstwem i wzbogaca wiedzę naukową z pomocą refleksji teologicznej. Kosmologia Bedy stanowi ważny etap rozwoju nauk w zachodnim chrześcijaństwie wczesnego średniowiecza.

    The aim of the article is to present Bede the Venerable as a role model present in the Polish religious prose of the 16th-18th centuries. The sources under discussion are mainly collections of the lives of saints. The profile of Bede, shown as a perfect Benedictine monk, scholar and priest is inspired by the earliest biographical Anglo-Saxon sources (e.g. Bede’s autobiography and Cuthbert’s letter on the hero’s death). Polish hagiography, following the directions of the Trent Council, aims at emphasizing Bede’s qualities required from the then clergy – in-depth spiritual life, thorough knowledge, respect towards authorities, and teaching skills.

    Although, among the works of St. Bede the Venerable there is none that would deal with the theory of evangelization in a systematic way, one has to admit that as a monk and a priest, St. Bede was deeply involved in the service of preaching the Word, and as a vir eruditissimus he left a literary legacy that could be helpful to all those who preach the Good News, both with respect to rhetoric and exegesis of the Holy Scripture. On the basis of St. Bede’s writings one can infer that he was concerned with propagation of the Gospel, with the lives of preachers and the effects of their activity. The present paper aims at a presentation of St. Bede’s thought concerning the principles of evangelization in the works which par excellence refer to the Divine Word and describe the word of life. The author draws from the exegetical works of St. Bede the Venerable a theological reflection on: 1) the attitudes and attributes of preachers; 2) the motivation for the service of preaching; 3) the goals of preaching the word.

    Numerous passages of the Book of Revelations, beginning with the prologue (Rev. 1), through letters to the seven Churches (Rev. 2-3), to the vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem (Rev. 21), accentuate the image of the Church as well as the role of God’s word and the issuing necessity to preach it. Those themes found their reflection in the Commentary on the Apocalypse, composed by Bede the Venerable in the first period of his erudite exegetical creative output. This article, in three subsequent stages presents the following themes: 1) the image of the Church; 2) proclamation of the word of God by the Church; 3) attributes and tasks of God’s word preachers.
    W przesłaniu Księgi Apokalipsy w różnych miejscach, rozpoczynając od prologu (Rev 1), poprzez listy do siedmiu Kościołów (Rev 2–3), aż po wizję Niebieskiego Jeruzalem (Rev 21) mocno wyakcentowany został obraz Kościoła oraz rola słowa Bożego, a w związku z tym – również konieczność jego głoszenia. Tematy te znalazły swoiste odzwierciedlenie w Komentarzu do Apokalipsy, który Beda Czcigodny skompilował już w pierwszym okresie swojej pełnej erudycji twórczości egzegetycznej. Niniejszy artykuł w trzech odsłonach ujmuje tematy: 1) obrazu Kościoła; 2) głoszenia przez Kościół słowa Bożego; 3) zadań u przymiotów głosicieli słowa.

    Artykuł poświęcony został hiszpańskiej męczennicy z okresu prześladowań Dioklecjana – Eulalii z Meridy, a ściślej zachowanym do dnia dzisiejszego średniowiecznym utworom poetyckim, które postać tę przywołują. Ów zbiór pięciu tekstów źródłowych – tworzony przez fragmenty poematów Wenancjusza Fortunatusa, Aldhelma i Bedy Czcigodnego oraz Kantylenę o św. Eulalii – poddany została analizie pod kątem wykazania rozwoju kultu świętej zarówno w wymiarze terytorialnym, jak i czasowym. Zwrócono przy tym uwagę na wspólne wątki hagiograficzne i ogólnoreligijne obecne w rozważanych źródłach. Dla ułatwienia każdy z tekstów opatrzono także polskim tłumaczeniem. Całość analizy poprzedzona została zarysem dostępnych współcześnie informacji na temat dziejów św. Eulalii.
    The aim of the article is to present a Spanish martyr during Diocletianic persecution – Eulalia of Merida, and, more specifically, medieval poems devoted to her that are preserved until now. A set of five primary sources – consisting of certain fragments of poems by Venantius Fortunatus, Aldhelm and Bede the Venerable as well as The Sequence of Saint Eulalia – has been analyzed in terms of demonstrating the development of sacred cult both in geographical as well as time dimensions. Special attention has been paid to the common hagiographic and general religious threads present in the discussed sources. In order to facilitate each text, the author also provides their Polish translations. The entire analysis is preceded by an outline of currently available information concerning the life of St. Eulalia.

    The main purpose of the paper is to discuss thirteen tropes presented by the Venerable Bede, a Benedictine monk from the Kingdom of Northumbria, in the manual On figures and tropes (De schematibus et tropis, ca. 710), dedicated to his disciple, Cuthbert. Using the definitions and examples given by Donatus (Ars maior), Bede described thirteen tropes and their variants: metaphor, catachresis, metalepsis, metonymy, antonomasia, epithet, synecdoche (totum a parte, pars a toto), onomatopoeia, periphrasis, hyperbaton (histerologia, anastrophe, parenthesis, tmesis, synchysis), hyperbole, allegory (irony, antiphrasis, enigma, charientism, paremia, sarcasm, asteism), and homoeosis (icon, parable, paradigm). Each of these rhetorical devices was illustrated with examples drawn from the Scripture. Therefore, the categories form the grammatical tradition were transformed into the exegetical means, particularly useful during reading the Bible and discovering its hidden meanings. Deploying tropes for interpretative purposes, Bede proposed the model of exegesis concentrated on both what is signified and the mode of signification.
