    Die neupolnische Periode begann in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und dauert bis heute an. In dem Aufsatz wird die innere Gliederung dieser Periode vorgenommen. Das sog. innersprachliche Kriterium erlaubt, zwei Etappen in der neupolnischen Zeit zu unterscheiden. Die Zäsur fällt in die Zeit 1840-1870. Begründung dafür liefert die Analyse des Verlaufs von über zwanzig Flexionsprozessen. Bei 14 Prozessen werden Verhältnisse zwischen den alten zurückgehenden Formen und den neuen, die sich immer mehr verbreiten, beobachtet. Es werden außerdem mehrere seltener auftretende Besonderheiten der Flexion verfolgt, z.B. bei der Deklination des Substantivs im Gen. Sing. mask. vom Typ obrazku, dura bzw. Dat. Sing. neutr. vom Typ imieniowi, usw. Die Untersuchungen haben im Bereich der Orthographie, Phonologie, Phonetik und Morphologie der Sprache im 19. Jahrhundert zu übereinstimmenden Ergebnissen geführt. Die Entwicklung der Syntax im 19. Jahrhundert ist noch nicht ausreichend erforscht worden. Größere Aufmerksamkeit wurde Veränderungen in der Interpunktion geschenkt, die von intonatorischer zu syntaktischer Art evaluiert und frühere Veränderungen in der Syntax widerspiegelt, somit auch die vorgenommene Gliederung bestätigt. Außersprachliche Kriterien erlauben, eine genauere Grenze zwischen den beiden Etappen zu ziehen (nach Z. Klemensiewicz sind es Veränderungen in der Konstellation sog. Triebkräfte der Funktionsweise einer Sprache). In den Vordergrund rückt der Januaraufstand von 1863-1864, der mit zahlreichen politischen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen verbunden war. Die Jahre 1863-1864 bestimmen die Grenze zwischen den ersten Etappen im Neupolnischen. Es ist nicht ausgeschlossen, daß weitere Untersuchungen zu einer Gliederung im 20. Jahrhundert führen würden, wobei die beiden Weltkriege als zwingende Zäsuren hervorstechen, weil sie sich durch sehr verschiedene außersprachliche Bedingungen voneinander abheben.

    The study analyzes the questionnaire material concerning the understanding of four Biblical terms: The Tower of Babel, Sodom and Gomorrah, to wash hands, the Apocalypse. The material consists of about 100 responses given by secondary-school students. In many responses some semantic changes have been observed; they cause differences in comparison with a dictionary meaning. The analysis shows that they are mainly metonymic changes of various type, with the strongest tendency to make a Biblical term more concrete. The author comes to a conclusion that the reason for such deformations is a limited code of respondents. She advises training a proper understanding in possibly broad and various contexts.

    The text is a brief description of the history of the Irena Bajerowa Institute of the Polish Language that existed between 1977 and 2019. The beginnings of linguistics in Katowice date back to the 1960s and were connected with the research activity of the most prominent representatives of linguistics in Poland (Witold Mańczak, Maria Honowska, Irena Bajerowa, Kazimierz Polański, Walery Pisarek) who had been educated at the Jagiellonian University. The research work of the Department of the Polish Language, which existed back then, concentrated mainly on diachronic issues and the problems of contemporary word formation and syntax.The foundation of the University of Silesia in 1968 expedited the academic development of the aforementioned linguistic society, which contributed to a philological community of a great potential. In the 70s, the Faculty of Philology was created, whereas the Institute of the Polish Language was established in its structure. This institution gathered many outstanding researchers, often including the precursors of new trends in the Polish academia, such as generative grammar, sociolinguistics, linguistic stylistics. Numerous groundbreaking studies and journals, Socjolingwistyka and Język Artystyczny, were published there as well. The activity of the remarkable linguists and their students contributed to the formation of the research approaches well-known in Poland and abroad, including historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and stylistics. In 2016, the Institute of the Polish Language was given the name of Irena Bajerowa, that is, the researcher who was closely connected with Silesian linguistic community, who inspired this community to think comprehensively about language and linguistics, and who took care of its academic development.
