Opis:
The article relates to the issue of diff erences in understanding assimilation both in European states and in the USA. Diff erences in the forming of European coun-tries and USA together with diff erent historical, political and social experiences infl uenced the way in which ethnic minorities are defi ned. However, comparison of these diff erent viewpoints enables considerations of the following doubts: “Who is responsible for forming ethnic minorities?”, “Why are they defi ned as ethnic?” or “How big is the infl uence of so called “dominant communities” on the process of assimilation of the members of ethnic minorities?”

Opis:
North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), monthly averages of precipitation in the Baghdad station, and petrologic tracer proxy data for ocean properties in the North Atlantic (NA) have been used in an attempt to identify climatic conditions in Iraq during the study period. The study showed that contemporary changes in precipitation in Iraq are associated with NAO, as a negative relationship is found between them. Moreover, the study found that there is a strong negative correlation between NAOI and SST in NA, where drift ice indices explain between 33–36% of the NAOI variability. The prolonged of cold Holocene periods led to a radical oceanography and atmospheric changes in the NA and the Mediterranean Sea, effectively contributing to the prevalence of cold and drought in the EM, including Iraq. The analysis revealed as many as four intervals of significant cool drought phases prevailing over Iraq during the periods 2650–2500, 2200– 1900,1300–1200 and 1000–850 BC.

Opis:
In 2018, Poland was granted the right to explore for ores in the area of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge area of 10 000 km2, which is the initial stage of the Program of Geological Exploration of Oceans (PRoGeO) accepted by the Government of Poland in July 2017. On the part of decision-makers, expectations are huge in ensuring safe deliveries of a number of metals (Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, REE, Ni, Co, Zn and Mo). The authors carried out a detailed analysis of the published results of research on similar objects in the exclusive economic zones of Japan and Papua New Guinea. Comparative analysis, covering geological-economic, organizational, financial, geo-environmental aspects reveals that in the Polish zone of the MAR one can expect to find rich, but relatively small deposits of Cu, Zn, Ag, and Au, which meet the needs of a small part of domestic demand for these metals in less than 2 years. The geological and economic analysis shows that there is no risk of a collapse of the supply market for these metals. On the other hand, the risk of organizational and financial failure of the oceanic research project was defined as very large. The authors do not deny the need to conduct basic oceanic research. On the contrary, such research should be carried out even if the economic goal is very distant in time and vaguely outlined. However, the method ofpreparing and evaluating the program of such research should not differf rom the standards adoptedfor serious research grants, so it should have an original character, be prepared by leading research centers in a given field and be thoroughly evaluated by independent experts. Then a wide discussion will be possible in the scientific community regarding the purposefulness, scope and costs of the work.

Opis:
Climate change is predicted to cause increases in sea surface temperature (SST), as well as decreases in sea-ice cover, wind and current velocities. These changes will have a marked effect on iceberg melting in the shipping lanes off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Icebergs that today can cross from northern Labrador to Newfoundland without melting will in the future have to be much larger to survive the transit. For example, icebergs at N Labrador in December of 2016 that are smaller than 156 m will melt before reaching 48N, but in year 2100 the length increases to 228 m. In addition, if future iceberg size distributions off Labrador are the same as today, icebergs will experience roughly 50% reductions in numbers in the NW Atlantic shipping lanes by year 2100. The increased melting rates are due to, in order of importance, increased sea-surface temperatures (responsible for 66% of the increase in the minimum transit size), decreasing current velocities (31%), and decreasing sea-ice cover (3%). Decreasing sea-ice tends to increase wave heights as well as accelerate the effects of wave erosion; however, for the areas studied the wave height is predicted to decrease moderately in year 2100, by a maximum of about 10% in December.

Opis:
The diffusive component of the vertical flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the surface ocean layer has been estimated using a combination of the mixed layer model and ocean color data from the SeaWiFS satellite. The calculations were carried out for an example location in the north polar Atlantic centered at 75◦N and 0◦ E for the time period of 1998–2004. The satellite estimates of surface POC derived using a regional ocean color algorithm were applied as an input to the model driven by local surface heat and momentum fluxes. For each year of the examined period, the diffusive POC flux was estimated at 200-m depth from April through December. The highest flux is generally observed in the late fall as a result of increased heat loss and convectional mixing of surface waters. A relatively high diffusive POC flux is also observed in early spring, when surface waters are weakly stratified. In addition, the model results demonstrate significant interannual variability. The highest diffusive POC flux occurred in 1999 (about 4500 mg m−2 over the 9-month period). In 1998 and 2002 the estimated flux was about two orders of magnitude lower. The interannual variability of the diffusive POC flux is associated with mixed layer dynamics and underscores the importance of atmospheric forcing for POC export from the surface layer to the ocean’s interior.

The operational measures in which a ship needs to avoid specified areas to escape ship stability failures were discussed at the International Maritime Organization as a part of the second generation intact stability criteria. It is necessary that the rationality and practicality of the operational measures are carefully investigated. In this study, master’s route decision-making criteria of trans-ocean vehicle carriers have been clarified by comparing the Pacific and the Atlantic data, derived from Satellite AIS and ocean wave data. Features of voyage routes of each ocean were discussed, followed by analysis of the encountered wave direction and height during a voyage. The master’s route selection criteria were defined by comparing the probability densities of the wave heights that occurred in the navigable area and that of the actual encountered waves. The navigation hours in a stormy area were also studied.

Quantitative analysis of radiolarian assemblages, carried out at the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 177 Site 1091 (Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean), provides a well-established summer sea surface temperature (SSST) record from the Polar Front Zone extending back into the Middle Pleistocene at orbital- -submillennial resolution. In order to estimate the SSST, the Imbrie & Kipp method (IKM) and the artificial neural network (ANN) were applied. The SSST records derived from the IKM and ANN display close similarities in paleotemperature fluctuations, amplitudes and absolute values. The ANN-derived SSST estimations display a pattern of slightly more distinct warm events that is closest to the records obtained from EDC (EPICA Dome C) ice cores and ODP Site 1090. The warm events indicate a distinct shift in the extent of the Southern Ocean cold water sphere that must have affected the ocean–atmosphere–ice field interactions and the configuration of high-latitude wind fields. Consistently with the global trend of paleotemperature fluctuation, the SSST record is marked by a distinct shift from low to high glacial/interglacial variability around Termination V. Prior to Termination V, the SSST displays coldest values and low variability. It points to a distinct expansion of the Southern Ocean cold water masses and positional changes of hydrographical fronts during most of the lower Middle Pleistocene.

Although the fossil record of beaked whales (Cetacea, Odontoceti, Ziphiidae) is continuously improving, the geological age of new taxa is often poorly constrained. Based on a partial cranium from deep seafloor deposits off Galicia, Spain, we describe a new species of the stem beaked whale genus Beneziphius, B. cetariensis sp. nov. The latter differs from the type species B. brevirostris in the larger size, the rostrum being proportionally longer, the premaxillae being longer than the maxillae at the apex of the rostrum, the left premaxillary sac fossa being transversely concave, and the ascending process of the premaxilla reaching the vertical. Considering that the stratigraphic context of deep-sea deposits off the Iberian Peninsula is not precisely known, we provisionally propose an extended, middle Miocene to early Pliocene interval for the geological age of B. cetariensis. Nonetheless, the palynological analysis of sediment sampled from cavities in the cranium of the holotype of B. brevirostris, discovered during the second part of the nineteenth century in inland deposits of Antwerp (north of Belgium), yield an early to mid-Serravallian age (13.2–12.8 Ma, late middle Miocene). B. brevirostris is thus the oldest described species of the “Messapicetus clade”, a large clade of stem ziphiids in which most species are dated from the late Miocene. The description of the Galician species B. cetariensis broadens the biogeographic distribution of Beneziphius and confirms the strong ziphiid faunal affinities between the eastern coast of the North Atlantic and the southern margin of the North Sea Basin.

Opis:
The water masses in Fram Strait have been analyzed on the basis of hydrographic casts taken in summer 1984 during the MIZEX 84 experiment. In particular, θ − S diagrams for 16 areas, each 5◦ in longitude and 1◦ in latitude, covering the strait from 77◦N to 81◦ N are used to characterize the water masses and discuss their possible origin. Near the surface, the East Greenland Polar Front clearly separates the lighter, cold and fresh Polar Water (PW) from the heavier, warm and saline Atlantic Water (AW). In the upper ocean, the data show a large spreading of the temperature maximum in the θ − S space associated with different modes of the AW recirculating southward below the PW. Two geographically distinct salinity minima are found in the intermediate layer below the AW. The denser one, in the Boreas Basin, is a feature typical of the Arctic Intermediate Water (AIW) formed by winter convection to the south of the strait, while the lighter one is sandwiched in the Arctic Ocean outflow between the AW layer and the Upper Polar Deep Water (UPDW) characterized by a downward salinity increase. In the deep layer, two salinity maxima are present. The shallower (and warmer) one, associated with the Canadian Basin Deep Water (CBDW), appears all along the East Greenland Slope. A similar but weaker maximum is also found in the southeastern part of the strait. This maximum is perhaps a remnant of the maximum in the East Greenland Current after it has been recirculated back to the strait around the cyclonic gyres of the Nordic Seas. The deeper one appears typically as a near-bottom salinity jump characteristic of the Eurasian Basin Deep Water (EBDW). The jump is found in two distinct areas of the strait, to the north-west in the Lena Trough and to the south-east in the rift valley of the Knipovich Ridge. The maximum in the former area should have been advected from the Arctic Ocean below the CBDW, while the maximum in the latter area might have originated from haline convection on the adjacent shelves. Some EBDW is trapped in the Molloy Deep over a denser water with salinity decreasing down to the bottom and temperature in the range of the Greenland Sea Deep Water (GSDW).

The circulation of Atlantic water along the European continental slope, in particular the inflow into the North Sea, influences North Sea water characteristics with consequent changes in the environment affecting plankton community dynamics. The long-term effect of fluctuating oceanographic conditions on the North Sea pelagic ecosystem is assessed. It is shown that (i) there are similar regime shifts in the inflow through the northern North Sea and in Sea Surface Temperature, (ii) long-term phytoplankton trends are influenced by the inflow only in some North Sea regions, and (iii) the spatial variability in chemicophysical and biological parameters highlight the influence of smaller scale processes.

Opis:
Ocean climates of the Atlantic Sector of the Arctic and Subarctic are characterized by extremely large changeability of weather conditions appearing during a year and the subsequent years. The changeability in the annual structure of weather types is manifested by a large number of the observed weather types. In the analized stations a number af the observed weather types during a statistical year are changed from 214 at Jan Mayen to 175 af Bjőrnőya. Extremely large number of weather types are noted during the polar night (figure l) The analysis of figure l shows that in the chosen stations there appear periods in which the changeability is decreasing and the frequency of weather types is increasing. These types appear nearly every year in the same periods and their frequeney is signiticant "stable types of weather". These “stable types of weather" are observed from May to October (especially during the polar day). The weathers are characterized by large or total cloudiness, rainfall, and a slight wind speed, also there can be noted weathers with strong winds (table l). In the autumn-winter period due to the intensity of atmospheric circulation the stable weather are rarely observed. They differ from the stable weather types from the warm period. They are characterized by lack of cloudiness or moderate cloudiness (table l). Their origin is connected with the appearance of the settled and immobile anticyclone.
