Opis:
The research explained in this paper is about the mechanical principle applications on regulated form and function, forces, motion of teeth and dental implant - influencing the implant length and bone quality - in biomechanics engineering modeling in dentistry. The non-linear finite element method was employed as an advanced computer technique of structural stress analysis tool for biomechanics modeling using mechanical, mathematical, and biological definitions and concepts. A finite element model of dental implant with accurate geometry and material properties was developed to make realistic investigations on the implant biomaterial properties and mechanical behavior of new dental implant. The finite element models with non-linear contact elements were used to simulate an interface fixation within the implant system and the sliding function of the non-rigid connector. This research showed that implant design influences force transmission characteristics in peri-implant bone and mechanical signals affect bone tissue differentiation. Hence, it is important to control biomechanical loads on dental implants to maintain osseointegration and to promote early bone-implant interface healing. The results of this analysis are helpful for implant biomaterial selection and design for clinical interest.

Radiation is energy, and it is widely used in a variety of fields, especially in industry and medical science. In hospital, ionizing radiation like X-ray is an extensive exam that has been used to help physicians to have a view into the body, without having to make a medical application. Computed tomography scan uses ionizing radiation, and it is a nearly perfect diagnostic unit that allows the physician to see the picture of the human body. Computed tomography scan technology has progressed over the years, and it is an increasingly powerful and effective unit in the diagnostic radiology. Exposure to ionizing radiation is known to increase the risk of cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the radiation exposure received during computed tomography in a sample representative of the current state of practice in adult patients.

Opis:
The aim of the current work was to analyze the influence of alternating magnetic field on the viscoelastic properties of blood in vivo in patients with lasting pain problems. Oscillatory techniques, also called the dynamic mechanical analysis, have been used in the current work to study the viscoelastic properties of blood. The blood samples were collected from patients of a neurological ward complaining about spinal cord and lower limbs pain. Altogether 25 patients took part in the study. A blood sample was collected from each patient twice: before the magnetostimulation and after five treatments. For each blood sample, the hematocrit value was measured using the standard method. Plasma viscosity and the complex whole blood viscosity were measured by means of a rotary-oscillating rheometer Contraves LS40. Magnetic field was generated by the instrument Viofor JPS and the magnetostimulation treatments were performed using different programs. The analysis of the results included estimation of the hematocrit value, plasma viscosity, complex whole blood viscosity and its components: viscous and elastic viscosity at four chosen amplitudes of the shear rate as a function of the applied treatment program. The results obtained in the study suggest that rheological properties of blood change depending on the applied magnetostimulation program.

A compact soft X-ray microscope based on a nitrogen double-stream gas puff target soft X-ray source, operating at He-like nitrogen spectral line at the wavelength of λ =2.88 nm is presented. The desk-top size microscope was successfully demonstrated in transmission mode using the Fresnel zone-plate objective and it is suitable for soft X-ray source microscopy in the "water window" spectral range (λ = 2.3÷ 4.4 nm). Details about the soft X-ray source source, the microscope and an example of application in the biomedical field are shown and discussed.

Bayesian assessments of value-at-risk and expected shortfall for a given portfolio of dimension n can be based either on the n-variate predictive distribution of future returns of individual assets, or on the univariate model for portfolio volatility. In both cases, the Bayesian VaR and ES fully take into account parameter uncertainty and non-linear relationship between ordinary and logarithmic returns. We use the n-variate type I MSF-SBEKK(1,1) volatility model proposed specially to cope with large n. We compare empirical results obtained using this (more demanding) multivariate approach and the much simpler univariate approach based on modelling volatility of the whole portfolio (of a given structure).

We present a simple analytical tool, which allows the calculation of the MRI diagnostics feasibility of the biogenic magnetite nanoparticles. Elevated levels of these particles are usually linked to the pathological processes, especially to neurodegenerative disorders. We showed theoretically that the biogenic magnetite itself is not sufficient for the non-invasive diagnostics and must be extended with the total iron incorporated in other biological structures.

Opis:
Functionalised magnetic nanoparticles composed of $Fe_3O_4$ particles stabilised by sodium oleate and subsequently modified with dextran (MFDEX) were prepared by the co-precipitation method. Their morphology and particle size distribution were observed by scanning electron microscopy and photon cross correlation spectroscopy. In order to confirm the modification of magnetite surface with dextran physical techniques, including infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and magnetic measurement, were used. Finally, the effect of MFDEX on amyloid fibrillar aggregates of human insulin and hen egg white lysozyme, typical amyloidogenic proteins, was investigated. In vitro interaction of MFDEX with protein amyloid fibrils resulted into destruction of amyloid aggregates. The anti-amyloid activity makes MFDEX of potential interest as therapeutic agent against amyloid-related diseases.

Opis:
Magnetosomes are intracellular organelles of widespread aquatic microorganisms called Magnetotactic bacteria. At present they are under investigation especially in biomedical applications. This ability depends on the presence of intracellular magnetosomes which are composed of two parts: first, nanometer-sized magnetite $(Fe_{3}O_{4})$ or greigite $(Fe_{3}S_{4})$ crystals (magnetosome crystal), depending on the bacterial species; and second, the bilayer membrane surrounding the crystal (magnetosome membrane). The magnetosomes were prepared by biomineralization process of magnetotactic bacteria Magnetospirillum Magnetotacticum sp. AMB-1. The isolated magnetosome chains (sample M) were centrifugated at speed of 100000 rpm for 4 hours (sample UM) and sonicated at power of 120 W for 3 hours (sample SM), respectively. The prepared suspensions were investigated with respect to morphological, structural and magnetic properties. The results from scanning electron microscopy showed that isolated chains of magnetosomes were partially broken to smaller ones after ultracentrifugation. On the other hand the application of the sonication process caused the formation of individual magnetosomes (unordered in chain). These results were confirmed by coercivity and magnetization saturation measurements.

The main objective of the presented study was to characterize the high (HAS) and low affinity (LAS) binding sites of ketoprofen (KP) in human serum albumin (HSA) structure with the use of spectrofluorescence and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In vitro fluorescence analysis was used to estimate the effect of KP on the HSA fluorescence. The association constants $K_{a} [M^{-1}]$ of KP-HSA complex in the HAS were determined with the use of Scatchard, Klotz, and Hill analysis. The quenching $K_{Q} [M^{-1}]$ constants were determined on the basis of the Stern-Volmer equation. Binding of ketoprofen to plasma protein was also studied with the use of 8-anilinonapthalene-1-sulfonic acid (ANS) and 5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (DNSA) as the fluorescence probes in IIIA and IIA subdomains of HSA, respectively. To estimate the cooperativeness in proteins Hill's coefficient $n_{H}$ was used. The analysis of proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of KP in the presence of HSA allows us to observe the interactions between aromatic rings of the drug and the rings of amino acids located in the hydrophobic subdomains of the protein on the basis of the changes of chemical shifts Δ σ [ppm] of drug protons resonances. Moreover the $K_{a}$ constants $[M^{-1}]$ of KP-HSA complex in the LAS were determined.

The aim of this study is to clarify whether clinical magnetic resonance imaging data can be utilised to evaluate the pathological processes associated with disrupted iron homeostasis, such as neurodegenerative processes or cirrhosis. Although MRI has the potential to become a non-invasive biomarker of such pathology, new quantification methods must be introduced. Our findings confirmed that it is possible to detect significant difference between healthy and pathological tissue from standard T2 weighted MRI protocols.

Filtered wastewater samples were inoculated with Enterococcus faecium and exposed to different pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment energies at 40, 50 and 60°C. A lethal effect of heat treatment on E. faecium can be observed for T > 56°C and a heating duration of 4 min. A treatment with 60°C, 4 min, provokes a bacterial reduction of 4 log. A combined treatment of inoculated wastewater samples with pulsed electric field and heat (40, 50 and 60°C) reduced the bacterial contamination considerably. At a suspension temperature of 60°C pulsed electric field inactivation resulted in a complete bacterial decontamination (8 log reduction rate). Moreover, it was demonstrated that naturally occurring nuclease activities were not changed by the pulsed electric field treatment. In contrast to a thermal treatment with temperature over 72°C, for 4 min., the nuclease activity was reduced up to 90%. In this case, inactivation is only 4 log. The same inactivation rate can be obtained by a combination of heat treatment (60°C) and pulsed electric field treatment (30 J/ml).

One of the methods for objective evaluation of the hearing system is based on acoustic otoemissions. Particularly promising is the method based on measurement of the distortion product of otoacoustic emission as it is connected to the problem of tinnitus. Slow-varying magnetic field of low induction has been used in therapy of many diseases and ailments. It is expected that magnetostimulation will be effective in treatment of certain types of tinnitus by inducing the return of the organism to homeostasis. The aim of this study was to identify the changes in distortion product of otoacoustic emission levels in patients, prior and after the magnetostimulation. However any significant changes were found among patients with tinnitus, for the control group statistically important changes in distortion product of otoacoustic emission levels were observed.

The paper presents an investigation into the effects of endurance training and testosterone enanthate (TE) treatment on rat blood serum by fluorescence spectroscopy. Blood serum was collected from adolescent male Wistar rats randomized between the untrained controls and trained animals, either steroid untreated or receiving I.M. injections (8 or 80 mg/$kg_{BW}$) of testosterone enanthate. Fluorescence measurements were performed for undiluted or 20- and 500-fold diluted serum and analysed separately in the ultraviolet and visible light regions. In both regions the impact of the TE administration was more pronounced than the effect of endurance training. Moreover, in the visible region of spectrum, originated from a number of fluorescent metabolites, the influence of studied factors was more noticeable. The opposite effect of endurance training and administration of TE on serum emission was found for a lower (8 mg/$kg_{BW}$) dose of testosterone, whereas a high-dose TE (80 mg/$kg_{BW}$) treatment resulted in a return of fluorescence intensity.

The aim of this study was to find out if polylactide (PLA) modified with magnetite might affect the amount of DNA double strand breaks induced with X-rays. The human osteosarcoma cells (MG63) were seeded on the polystyrene cell culture dishes (PS), PLA and PLA modified with magnetite substrates. The double strand breaks were analyzed after X-ray irradiation (dose rate 2 Gy/min), in the first day of culturing. The number of double strand breaks increased in the PLA modified with magnetite, for example after 1 Gy of X-rays irradiation, double strand breaks/cell equaled: 24.5 vs. 17.5 and 17.3, for PLA modified with magnetite vs. PLA and PS, p < 0.0003. We conclude that PLA modified with magnetite changed the number of double strand breaks induced with X-rays. However, more research is needed to confirm that such composite might be considered as radiosensitizer in radiotherapy.

A pulsed high voltage was applied to logs for mushroom cultivation to investigate an effect of pulse high voltage on mushroom growth. Inductive energy storage system was utilized to construct a pulsed power generator with compact size. Copper fuse of 0.03 mm diameter was used as an opening switch to interrupt large circuit current in short time. The voltage charged in primary energy storage capacitor was multiplied using secondary energy storage inductor. The output voltage of the pulsed power generator was 120 kV with 100 ns pulse width at 14 kV charging voltage of 0.22 μF primary energy storage capacitor and 15 μH secondary energy storage inductor. This pulsed high voltage was applied to 90 cm length logs inoculated Pholiota nameko fungus. The yield of Pholiota nameko mushrooms was successfully improved with the pulse voltage stimulation. The total weight of the cropped Pholiota nameko after the pulse voltage stimulation was 6.3 kg for fifteen logs and this value was 1.5 times larger than 4.3 kg of total weight without the stimulation. The number of logs with lower than 0.27 kg cropped Pholiota nameko weight which was an average value for control group was only one in fifteen, whereas four logs in control group showed almost zero weight of cropped Pholiota nameko.
