In this article we summarize the study of the electronic states and electron-vibrational interactions in square-planar molecular entities playing the role of molecular cells in quantum cellular automata (QCA), a promising paradigm of quantum computing. The following issues are shortly discussed: 1) QCA as a paradigm of quantum computing; 2) molecular implementation of QCA; 3) vibronic coupling as the origin of charge trapping, encoding of binary information 4) non-linear cell-cell response; 4) spin-switching in molecular QCA based on mixed-valence cells; 5) multimode dynamic vibronic problem, the symmetry assisted approach.

Using bremsstrahlung photon is one of the principal means to treat cancer. Bremsstrahlung photons are created in medical LINAC and the interaction of bremsstrahlung photon with the heavy nuclei that constitute the linac head shielding is the main process of neutron production inside the treatment rooms. The threshold of the neutron production for those materals is about 10 MeV. As the neutron is more dangerous than photon it is important to determine neutron dose during radiotherapy treatment. The neutron distribution depends on some parameters such as gantry angle. In this study neutron dose rate has been simulated as a function of gantry angle.

Opis:
The effect of vanadium (IV)-oxy acetylacetonate (V4) and vanadium(III) acetylacetonate (V3) on the liposome membranes formed of synthetic lecithin (DPPC) was presented in this paper. Liposomes were formed during the sonication of DPPC lecithin in an aqueous medium. The concentration of the vanadium compounds changed in the range of 0% to 2.4% in molar ratio to the lecithin. The EPR technique made use of three spin probes penetrating the different areas of the membrane (as follows: TEMPO, 16-DOXYL stearic acid methyl ester, stearic acid 5-DOXYL methyl ester). TEMPO probe penetrates the interphase water-lipid (partition parameter F), the probe 16-DOXYL locates in the middle of the lipid bilayer (rotational correlation time τ), the probe 5-DOXYL gives a picture of membrane fluidity (the order parameter) just below the polar head groups. The results of our research showed the following conclusions. The change of membrane fluidity, as a function of admixture concentration, was dependent on the type of additives. TEMPO probe recorded an increase in liquidity interphase water-lipid for both admixtures: V3 and V4. 16-DOXYL probe indicated that the admixture V3 increases the fluidity in the center of the lipid bilayer. Admixture V4 significantly less impacted on the change of the membrane middle. The 5-DOXYL probe did not influence on the membrane surface portion, there were not observed significant changes under the impact of admixtures. V3 showed stronger impact on membrane fluidity.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to analyse the influence of a cationic surfactant from the group of morpholine derivatives on the conformational dynamics of $CH_2$ group in acyl chain of DSPC. The presence of the surfactant causes a decrease in the DSPC phase transition temperature. This result suggests that the surfactant interactions with phospholipid molecules disturb the lipid layers. The Fourier transform infrared measurements were supplemented with tests of the environmental toxicity of the surfactant used.

The irradiation setup at the ion microprobe SNAKE is used to irradiate living cells with single energetic ions. The irradiation accuracy of 0.55μm and respectively 0.40μm allows to irradiate substructures of the cell nucleus. By the choice of ion atomic number and energy the irradiation can be performed with a damage density adjustable over more than three orders of magnitude. Immunofluorescence detection techniques show the distribution of proteins involved in the repair of DNA double-strand breaks. In one of the first experiments the kinetics of appearance of irradiation-induced foci in living HeLa cells was examined. In other experiments a new effect was detected which concerned the interaction between irradiation events performed at different time points within the same cell nucleus.

The study has been performed on model systems of biological membranes obtained on the basis of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) and cationic gemini surfactant - derivative of 1,1'-(1,4-butane)bis 3-alkylo-xyme-thyli-mida-zolium chlorides with cyclic chains. The small angle X-ray scattering SAXS results implied a gradual disappearance (as a function of surfactant concentration) of the lamellar phase typical of DMPC and formation of unilamellar phase - probably a bicellar phase.

Opis:
In this work, the influence of recoil effect and surface excitations on the inelastic mean free paths for polythiophenes is investigated. The inelastic mean free paths of electrons in polythiophenes are measured with the elastic peak electron spectroscopy method using the Ag standard and the electron elastic scattering cross-sections from the database NIST 3.1 in the electron kinetic energy range 200-5000 eV. The Monte Carlo model is applied for evaluating the electron backscattering intensities from the polymers and the Ag standard, as well as for evaluating electrons quasi-elastically backscattered from atoms of different atomic numbers (the recoil effect). The surface excitation corrections are accounted for using the formalism of Chen, with the material parameters for polythiophenes evaluated from the elastic peak electron spectroscopy method. Deviations due to recoil effect and surface excitations to the inelastic mean free paths are compared and discussed. Correction to the inelastic mean free paths due to recoil effect is considerable but is smaller, however, than the correction due to surface excitations. Accounting for recoil effect and surface excitations leads to improvement of the inelastic mean free paths, as compared to the inelastic mean free paths resulting from the predictive formulae of Gries.

The rehydration from the gaseous phase of the developing native or EDTA-washed from unbound and loosely bound paramagnetic ions wheat thylakoid membrane lyophilizate was investigated using hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and high power proton relaxometry. Hydration time courses are single exponential for all target humidities. The sorption isotherm is well fitted by the Dent model, with the mass of water saturating primary binding sites equal toΔ M/m$\text{}_{ }$0=0.024 and 0.017 for native and EDTA-washed membranes, respectively. Proton free induction decays distinguish: (i) a Gaussian component, S$\text{}_{0}$, coming from protons of solid matrix of lyophilizate; (ii) a Gaussian component, S$\text{}_{1}$, from water bound to the primary water binding sites in proximity of water accessible paramagnetic ions; (iii) an exponentially decaying contribution, $L$\text{}_{1}$$, from water tightly bound to lyophilizate surface; and (iv) exponentially decaying loosely bound water pool, L$\text{}_{2}$. Sorption isotherm fitted to NMR data shows a significant contribution of water "sealed" in membrane structures (Δ M$\text{}_{s}$/m$\text{}_{0}$=0.052 for native and 0.061 for EDTA-washed developing membranes, respectively).

Opis:
Between neighbouring bilayers of lyophilized dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) multilamellar vesicles the total number of water molecules equals 9 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule. One of these molecules is very tightly bound to the lipid molecule, seven are in immobilized (tightly bound) water fraction whereas the last one belongs to mobile water fraction. The rehydration from the gaseous phase of the DPPC model membranes was investigated using hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and high power proton relaxometry. The obtained data for DPPC were compared with these obtained for wheat photosynthetic membranes. Rehydrated photosynthetic membranes differ from DPPC model membranes in hydration kinetics. The average hydration time has a similar value: (22.0 ± 2.8) h (photosynthetic membrane) and (19.8 ± 1.6) h (DPPC), however hydration kinetics was described by one-exponential function for photosynthetic membrane, while for model membrane it shows fine double exponential form. The sigmoidal form of sorption isotherm is better fitted using Dent model than by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller formula. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller/Dent deviation parameter b =0.93 either for photosynthetic or for model membranes. The mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equals ΔM/m₀= 0.017 (wheat photosynthetic membranes) and 0.027 (DPPC). The detected by NMR-isotherm study mass of water "sealed" in model membrane structures was about ΔMₛ/m₀=0.182 (about 7-8 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule), and ΔMₛ/m₀= 0.066 for photosynthetic membrane.

The publication of a Latin-English edition of Nicolaus Hussovianus’ “Carmen de bisonte” in 2019 is a highly significant event as it makes this canonical text of Old Belarusian (as well as Lithuanian) literature accessible to a broad, international and interdisciplinary audience. This article analyses in detail the merits and shortcomings of Frederick J. Booth’s edition. It proposes some alternative translations, adds information that was not accessible to the classical philologist, and highlights the relevance of recent discoveries that change our knowledge about Hussovianus’ origin and biography. Designed as a kind of interface between research communities that are scarcely connected, the article demonstrates what we can and should learn from each other. With emphasis on the significance of working with the original old print, a subchapter of the article acquaints the reader with the figures in “Carmen de bisonte” and analyses the emblem on the last page of the book. It shows a picture of the Roman god Terminus, framed by quotes in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. This emblem served in the 1520s as a printer’s device for a “humanistic series” of the Krakow publisher Hieronymus Vietor. The fact that it was built upon an iconic symbol used by Erasmus of Rotterdam exemplifies what aroused Booth’s initial interest in CdB: the pan-European scope of Neo-Latin literature and the close connectedness of regions which in his academic youth were separated by the Iron Curtain.
