Opis:
We investigate the low-temperature electron transport through $C_{60}$ peapods, which are carbon nanotubes encapsulating $C_{60}$ fullerenes. We find that the temperature dependence of the Coulomb blockade oscillations in peapod quantum dots deviates from conventional Breit-Wigner behavior, showing signatures of the Franck-Condon blockade of conductance. This indicates the presence of a coupling between electronic states and vibrational excitations. Unlike for suspended empty nanotubes, these are not intrinsic vibrational modes of the tube but mechanical vibrations of the encapsulated fullerenes that affect the electronic transport. Fullerene peapods thus emerge as a new class of nanoelectromechanical systems.

The resonance and non-resonance transmission canals of double-barrier resonant tunneling structure are established for the electron-photon system using the exact solution of one-dimensional non-stationary Schrödinger equation expanded into the Fourier range. It is shown that besides the main and satellite, the mixed quasi-stationary states which cause the appearance of specific transmission canals with the properties strongly dependent on the intensity and frequency of electromagnetic field, exist in the nanostructure.

Properties of microwave detectors of various design on the base of MBE grown GaAs and AlGaAs structures are discussed in this paper: simple asymmetrically shaped structures with heavily doped GaAs and AlGaAs layers of nanometric thickness as well as diodes with two-dimensional electron gas layers. Novel models of the detectors with partially gated two-dimensional electron gas layer as well as with small area GaAs/AlGaAs heterojuction are discussed to demonstrate different ways to increase the voltage sensitivity of the detectors of electromagnetic radiation in GHz-THz frequency range.

We report on the results of our simulations of Γ-X scattering in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures, discussing the importance of the mole fraction, doping density, and lattice and electron temperature in determining the scattering rates. We consider three systems, a single quantum well (for the investigation of Γ-X scattering), a double quantum well (to compare the Γ-X-G and Γ-Γ scattering rates), and an example of a GaAs/AlGaAs mid-infrared quantum cascade laser. Our simulations suggest that Γ-X scattering can be significant at room temperature but falls off rapidly at lower temperatures. One important factor determining the scattering rate is found to be the energy difference between the Γ- and X-states.

Persistent photoconductivity was observed in all samples due to spatial separation of carriers. We used the Shubnikov-de Haas effect to analyze subband electron concentration and mobility. The maximal mobility was observed for quantum well width d = 16 nm.

Transport properties via temperature dependences of sample resistance R(T) and influence of microwave field of 10 GHz on the conductivity of the single-walled carbon nanotubes fibers are investigated. The R(T) dependences studied within 4.2-300 K can be well approximated by the Mott law for 3D variable range hopping below T=80 K and by typical law for fluctuation-induced tunnelling model within the temperature range 80-300 K. We associate the observed increase in the conductivity with microwave power by increase in hopping probability of the charge carriers between single-walled carbon nanotubes.

The out-of-equilibrium electron transport of carbon nanotube semiconducting quantum dot placed in a magnetic field is studied in the Kondo regime by means of the non-equilibrium Green functions. The equation of motion method is used. For parallel magnetic field the Kondo peak splits into four peaks, following the simultaneous splitting of the orbital and spin states. For perpendicular field orientation the triple peak structure of density of states is observed with the central peak corresponding to orbital Kondo effect and the satellites reflecting the spin and spin-orbital fluctuations.

A Schottky-barrier carbon nanotube field-effect transistor with ferromagnetic contacts was modelled. The theoretical method combines a tight-binding model and the non-equilibrium Green function technique. Tunnel magnetoresistance as well as current noise of the carbon nanotube field-effect transistor are the main issues addressed in this study. It is shown that the former may exceed 50%, whereas the latter is characterized by the Poissonian Fano factor (F) within the sub-threshold region, and the sub-Poissonian F≈0.5 for elevated gate voltages. Remarkably, reorientation of relative magnetization alignments of the contacts may lead to noticeable changes in the current noise.

Electronic transport through a quantum dot in the Coulomb-blockade cotunelling regime is investigated both experimentally and theoretically, where a single-wall carbon-nanotube weakly coupled to metallic leads plays a role of the dot. We observe a pronounced current peak for the singlet-triplet transition in a half-shell filling regime due to inelastic cotunneling processes. Using the second order perturbation theory we explain physical mechanisms determining the details of signal.

Thin films of acid-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNT) with different concentrations and coated O-MWCNT with $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles (MWCNT/$Fe_3O_4$) were prepared on glass substrate at 300C by spray pyrolysis technique. In order to study the effect of nanotubes alignment on the physical properties of carbon nanotube films, thin film of iron oxide nanoparticles coated carbon nanotubes was deposited under magnetic field of 0.4 T. All samples were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and the Hall effect experiment. Results show that the electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of carbon nanotubes thin films depend on the concentration of carbon nanotubes and their arrangement at the films. Aligning carbon nanotubes in thin films leads to an obvious improvement in electrical and optical properties of thin films.

Opis:
The properties of carbon nanotubes can be dramatically altered by the presence of defects. In this work we address the properties of two different kinds of defective nanotubes: junctions of achiral tubes with topological defects and partially unzipped carbon nanotubes. In particular, we begin by focussing on the interface states in carbon nanotube junctions between achiral tubes. We show that their number and energies can be derived by applying the Born-von Karman boundary condition to an interface between armchair- and zigzag-terminated semi-infinite graphene layers. We show that these interface states, which were thought to be due to the presence of topological defects, are in fact related to the graphene zigzag edge states. Secondly, we study partially unzipped carbon nanotubes, which can be considered as the junction of a carbon nanotube and a graphene nanoribbon, which has edge features giving rise to novel properties. Carbon nanoribbons act as transparent contacts for nanotubes and viceversa, yielding a high conductance. At certain energies, nanoribbons behave as valley filters for carbon nanotubes; this holds considering electron-electron interaction effects. Furthermore, the application of a magnetic field turns the system conducting, with a 100% magnetoresistance. These novel structures may open a way for new carbon-based devices.
