The aim of this study is to present the special features and properties of the two alloys of similar average chemical composition Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀, processed through two different routes. The first alloy was melt-spun after the ejection of homogeneous liquid using a traditional single chamber crucible, and the second alloy was ejected from a double chamber crucible as two separate liquids: i.e., Ni₄₀Fe₄₀B₂₀ and Ni₇₀Cu₁₀P₂₀, mixing only at the orifice area. The studies of the microstructure of the composite alloy were performed through the use of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀ two-chamber melt-spun (TCMS) alloy, as well as the homogeneous Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀, Ni₄₀Fe₄₀B₂₀, and Ni₇₀Cu₁₀P₂₀ alloys, were heated to elevated temperatures and their characteristics studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The temperature resistivity change method was applied to the examination of the Ni₅₅Fe₂₀Cu₅P₁₀B₁₀ TCMS alloy. The phase composition after heat treatment was investigated using X-ray diffraction. The results of the microstructure examination show that the TCMS alloy is an amorphous/amorphous composite, and is notable for its Ni-Fe-B and Ni-Cu-P stripes resulting from its differentiated chemical composition. Another unique feature of the TCMS alloy is that it retains its wood-like morphology even after high-temperature heat treatment. The crystallisation of the TCMS alloy starts from the Ni-Cu-P constituent and ends with the Ni-Fe-B areas of the sample. The results are discussed on the basis of previous work completed on amorphous matrix composites.

The temporal behavior of the magnetization due to the spin-lattice relaxation for bulk and MBE grown epilayer of CdMnTe is compared. The time dependence of the epilayer magnetization changes (dM/dt) is nonmonotonic. After the main part, a second structure appears. It can be explained only by the assumption of energy storage and a delayed additional rise of specimen temperature. The nature of the storage is unknown.

The formation of coalesced oxide films on atomically clean polycrystalline chromium has been studied with Auger electron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry at temperatures between 30°C and 400°C. The data are consistent with an initialed chemisorption of oxygen on the clean Cr followed by nucleation of chromium oxide after 2 L of exposure followed by lateral growth to form a thin, coalesced, saturated oxide film about 0.8 nm thick at 30°C. The saturated oxide was thicker at higher temperatures, being about 80 nm thick at 400°C. Detection of a CrO$\text{}^{+}$ secondary ion was associated with chemisorbed oxygen, while O¯ ion originated from chromium oxides based upon correlation with chemical changes in the low-energy Auger spectra. Keating of the coalesced oxide caused considerable changes in both the low-energy Auger spectrum as well as the secondary ion emission. Both these as well as time-dependent, reversible changes in secondary ion emission were interpreted as structural rearrangements of the chromium oxide resulting in relative changes of oxygen either adsorbed on the surface or incorporated into chromium oxide.

Opis:
Thin film series consisting of Ti, V, TiO₂ and V₂O₅ layer with different layer geometries, sequences and thicknesses have been prepared by the sputtering technique. The hydrogen depth profile of selected films upon hydrogen charging at 1 bar and/or hydrogenation at pressure up to 102 bar was determined by using secondary ion mass spectrometry and nuclear reaction analysis using a N-15 beam. The highest hydrogen storage with a concentration up to 50 at.% was found in the pure Ti and Ti-contained layer, while it amounts to around 30% in the metallic Ti-V-Ni layer. Hydrogen can diffuse through the TiO₂ layer without accumulation, but can be stored in the VO₂ layer in some cases. Hydrogen can remove the preferential Ti orientation in the films and induce a complete transition of V₂O₅ into VO₂ in the films.

The microstructure, microhardness, corrosion, and wear resistance of d.c.-plated Ni electrodeposits prepared from different types of electrolyzing Watts-type baths, without or with organic compounds, ceramic powder - SiC and polymer - polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), on Cu substrate, which was subsequently removed from the deposits, were investigated. With the change of the type of bath, the deposit grain size was found to decrease markedly, e.g. deposits with an average grain size of about 50 nm could be produced from a bath containing 45 g/dm$\text{}^{3}$ Ni$\text{}^{2}$+ ions, 5 g/dm$\text{}^{3}$ SiC, and 20 g/dm$\text{}^{3}$ PTFE. The surface morphology on the bath side of the electrodeposited Ni or Ni-SiC-PTFE foils was characteristic of the type of bath, and its roughness correlated well with the observed grain size. Microhardness and wear resistance increased with decreasing grain size, as expected. On discussing the factors controlling deposit grain size, it is concluded that the Ni$\text{}^{2+}$ ion content in the bath and the presence of organic compounds may have a decisive role.

In this communication we report successful growth of monocrystalline cubic ZnS and monocrystalline and polycrystalline cubic and wurtzite films of CdS by atomic layer epitaxy. Structural and optical properties of these films are analysed. ZnS (and CdS/ZnS) films grown on GaAs substrate are cubic. Atomic layer epitaxy grown films provide several advantages over ZnS and CdS materials grown by other techniques, especially compared to bulk material, which is grown at higher temperatures. First results for ZnS/CdS/ZnS quantum well structures are also discussed.

The atomic and electronic structure and interface formation of alkali metal (Na, K, Rb, Cs) and Si(100)2 × 1 surfaces is investigated by photoemission - XPS, UPS - using synchrotron radiation, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and by photoemission extended X-ray absorption fine structure (PEXAFS) experiments. The XPS-UPS results indicate that the alkali metal-silicon bond is a weak and polarized covalent bonding even at low coverages with adsorbate metallization at the monolayer. In contrast to III-V semiconductor surfaces, alkali metals do not induce significant structural changes of the surface: STM images performed with atomic resolution for the representative K/Si(100)2×1 systems demonstrate that, at one mono-layer coverage, the K atoms form one-dimensional linear metallic chains parallel to the Si dimers rows ⟨110⟩ direction and distant by 7.68 Å with a single site of adsorption. Below half a monolayer, the K atoms occupy various coexisting sites with no long range order. An ordering transition occurs around half a monolayer in which the adsorbate-adsorbate interaction, which was so far neglected in theoretical calculations, appears to be the leading driving force. The proposed models and concepts are discussed and compared to the latest state-of-art theoretical calculations.

Spectra of possible phonon states, as well as thermodynamic characteristics of nanocrystals (ultrathin film and quantum wire) of simple cubic crystalline structure are analyzed in this paper, using the method of two-time dependent Green functions. From energy spectra and internal energy of the system the thermal capacitance of these structures in low temperature region is found. The temperature behavior of specific heat is compared to that of corresponding bulk structure. It is shown that at extremely low temperatures thermal capacitance of quantum wire is considerably lower than the thermal capacitance of film as well as the bulk sample. Consequences of this fact are discussed in detail and its influence to thermodynamic properties of materials is estimated.

Temperature dependence of the free-volume of voids in hexadecane (HXD) confined in the 3 nm silica gel pores (Develosil-30) was measured by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Different amount of HXD was filled into the pores of matrix. The anomalous thermal expansion was observed in the partially filled pores with extremely low filling. The thermal expansion coefficient of free-volume voids in this solidified HXD layer has a negative sign at temperatures below 180 K compared to high- or full-filled pores of silica gel. At these temperatures, the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements demonstrate the appearance of a new type of the free volume within HXD which has been interpreted as the cracks in the HXD layer on the inner walls of matrix cavities. The differential scanning calorimetry method confirmed that the processes were enacted within pores and not on the outer surfaces of silica gel grains. In the sample with the extremely low filling, only the one HXD solidification/melting effect connected with confined states is manifested.

We deal with the following question: how can the composite nature of a boundary condition formulated for a periodically inhomogeneous surface and involving the composite surface parameter, be treated analytically? We show that when the appropriate Fourier transformation is applied, the composite boundary condition reduces to a specific eigenproblem condition, which constitutes the spectrum of eigenvalues of an "effective" surface parameter, a novel quantity we introduced to account for the nonhomogeneity of the surface.

The use of high temperature superconductor for device application has made the compatibility of the film and substrate an important issue. Garnets having reasonably low dielectric constant and low dielectric losses can be viable low cost substrate materials for the microwave devices. Garnet single crystals like Gd$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{12}$ (GGG), Y$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{12}$ (YGG), Y$\text{}_{3}$Al$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{12}$ (YAG) etc. can be potential HTSC substrate materials for microwave devices. Properties of HTSC films on some of these garnet crystals are compared here.

Magnetosomes are intracellular organelles of widespread aquatic microorganisms called Magnetotactic bacteria. At present they are under investigation especially in biomedical applications. This ability depends on the presence of intracellular magnetosomes which are composed of two parts: first, nanometer-sized magnetite $(Fe_{3}O_{4})$ or greigite $(Fe_{3}S_{4})$ crystals (magnetosome crystal), depending on the bacterial species; and second, the bilayer membrane surrounding the crystal (magnetosome membrane). The magnetosomes were prepared by biomineralization process of magnetotactic bacteria Magnetospirillum Magnetotacticum sp. AMB-1. The isolated magnetosome chains (sample M) were centrifugated at speed of 100000 rpm for 4 hours (sample UM) and sonicated at power of 120 W for 3 hours (sample SM), respectively. The prepared suspensions were investigated with respect to morphological, structural and magnetic properties. The results from scanning electron microscopy showed that isolated chains of magnetosomes were partially broken to smaller ones after ultracentrifugation. On the other hand the application of the sonication process caused the formation of individual magnetosomes (unordered in chain). These results were confirmed by coercivity and magnetization saturation measurements.

Thin carbon films with various thicknesses, deposited on different substrates (Si and poly-ethylene-terephthalate) at the same operating conditions in a radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition system were characterized by Doppler broadening spectroscopy. The films and the substrates were depth profiled by a slow positron beam. The aim of these measurements was to study the open volume structure and the interface of the films. It was found that, independently from the substrate, the films were homogeneous and exhibited the same open volume distribution. On the contrary, the effective positron diffusion length in the Si substrate was found to change with the thickness of the carbon films. This behaviour was interpreted as a change in the electric field at the carbon/silicon interface.

Opis:
Production of new composites for the creation of modern materials with desired properties is the key feature of nanotechnology. Despite the well known advantages of magnetic nanoparticles, the aim of the present study was to synthesize lysozyme amyloid fibrils from hen egg white and subsequently doped this solution with single walled carbon nanotubes and with the magnetite Fe₃O₄ labelled single walled carbon nanotubes. Transmission electron microscopy and polarization optical microscopy were used to obtain the structural and dimensional information about samples. Measurements of magnetic properties indicate the considerable increase of the saturation magnetization for solutions included the magnetite nanoparticles.

The food packaging industry demands polymer films possessing a defined barrier against permeation of gases, moisture and flavor. The objective of this study was to assess the differences between the barrier properties of coated and un-coated polyolefine films. Eight types of packaging films are prepared by standard industrial procedure by cast film extrusion processing with chill rollers: biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), BOPP coated by acrylic copolymer, metallized BOPP by aluminum, and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The influence of lamination and metallization on the gas molecules ($CO_{2}$, $O_{2}$ and $N_{2}$) was determined by Lyssy's method. The moisture transparency was assessed according to the gravimetric method. The substantial differences between the barrier properties of the coated and un-coated films were estimated. It was estimated that the lamination process improves the oxygen barrier but not necessarily the moisture barrier, due to the different mechanisms for oxygen and moisture permeability. The obtained barrier properties data were considered from a practical point of view. It was concluded that films based on metallized BOPP has excellent barrier properties and can be used to over wrap food products.
