    The consideration of the silence of a present person in some French 20th century drama reveals the power and the cruelty of human silence. The play by Anouilh displays the destiny of a woman who is convicted to be a voiceless witness, whereas the one by Beckett shows the silence of a husband begged by his companion to confirm her presence. In the play by Lagarce, the agony of an ungrateful son unleashes a torrent of complaints pronounced by a women belonging to his family. Finally, both of the analysed plays by Sarraute show the consequences of silence in relations between friends.

    Andrzej Wirth, a 20th century Polish essayist, philosopher and theatre critic, is one of the often forgotten theatre and drama scholars in Poland, perhaps due to his long life in exile. A recognized expert in theatre studies and philosophy, he has lectured at many universities around the world, especially in the United States and Europe. He gained particular recognition as the founder and director of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen in Germany. The aim of this article is to introduce Wirth’s personality, outline his life between cultures and highlight his importance for the development of theatre studies in Germany, as well as his great contribution to the promotion of Polish literature in Germany in the mid-20th century. Andrzej Wirth’s life was beyond borders and divisions, although with a particular attachment to the culture of his homeland and Germany; he was rooted in childhood memories and a desire for theatre as a liberated art in an age of evolving media technologies.

    Opis:
    The article is focused on “rewriting” classic dramas as a tendency which is representative for dramaturgy of the second half of the 20th century. This phenomenon is strictly related to the paradigm shift in literature and theatre. “Rewriting” is based on re-interpretation and re-contextualisation of the well-known literary myths, and as a method of writing it helps to discover the new meanings of classic literature. “Rewriting” can also be considered as a transfer of the original classic text to a new cultural, social, and historical reality. The article is an attempt to characterise this kind of dramaturgy using selected plays of Heiner Müller and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
    Artykuł traktuje o zjawisku „przepisywania” klasycznych tekstów jako tendencji charakterystycznej dla dramaturgii drugiej połowy XX wieku, ściśle związanej z przemianami na gruncie literatury oraz zmianą paradygmatu w zakresie sztuk widowiskowych. Jako praktyka dramatopisarska „przepisywanie” polega na reinterpretacji i rekontekstualizacji utrwalonych kulturowo mitów literackich, dzięki czemu mogą one odsłonić całkiem nowe znaczenia. Dochodzi tu zatem do swoistego transferu pierwotnego tekstu do nowej rzeczywistości społecznej, historycznej i kulturowej, którego celem staje się poszukiwanie punktów stycznych między tradycją a współczesnością. Powyższe zjawisko zobrazowane zostaje na przykładzie tekstów dwóch współczesnych dramatopisarzy: Heinera Müllera i Piera Paolo Pasoliniego.

    Born in 1888 in Atlantic, Pennsylvania, Maxwell Anderson was among the generation of playwrights who changed the world's perception of American drama. The group of young dramatists included such famous names as Eugene O'Neill, Elmer Rice, Sidney Howard, RobertSherwood, George S. Kaufman, Samuel N. Behrman and Paul Green; however, Anderson was more prolific and versatile than anybody of them. During a career of just thirty years he produced thirty-three plays (about half the number he wrote) which include comedies and tragedies, plays in verse and in prose, satires and musicals. His first play White Desert was written in verse because he was weary of ”plays in prose that never lifted from the ground”. The play failed but Anderson didn't abandon his dream of bringing tragic poetry to the American stage. Examining Aeschylus', Sophocles', Euripides', Shakespeare's and Racine's tragedies, also reading Aristotle's The Poetic, Anderson realized that „in discussing construction Aristotle made a point of the recognition scene as essential to tragedy” and that poetic tragedy had never been successfully written about its own place and time. According to the rules, he composed two very successful historical dramas in verse: Elizabeth the Queen (1930) and Mary of Scotland (1933). However, a few years later, in 1935, Anderson broke his newly discovered principles and composed Winterset, a poetic tragedy based on a true story and set in contemporary New York. Unlike his first contemporary verse drama White Desert, the experiment, Winterset, was a big success and brought him the very first New York Drama Critics Circle Award. His theory and dramas inspired some contemporary theorists as John Mason Brown, John Gassner and Elder Olson; also, the famous American playwright Archibald MacLeish.

    This article concerns three selected works of the 20th Century drama: Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus (which had its first-night performance in the Oliver Theatre in London on 11.02.1979), The Impostor Gyorgy Spiró (staged before the Budapest audience in the theatre Katona József Szinhaz on 28.10.1983), and the drama The Four Hand Dinner of Paul Barz (included in the repertoire of European theaters after its first-night performance at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin on 27.01.1987). These dramas present the very thorough, and at the same time subtle analysis of the relationships between artists talented in varying degrees: their mutual curiosity, excessive admiration, cautious distance, small mutual malice or resulting from complexes passionate jealousy. It is interesting that the three so different playwrights used in these dramas the same structural scheme: reaching into the history of theater or music, on the canvas of real artistic biography they created their own tale about desire of unattainable fame, about creative solitude and social exclusion of talented misfits.

    Artykuł prezentuje kontekstową interpretację dwóch wczesnych dramatów Stefana Żeromskiego, Grzech i Dramatu akt pierwszy, niepublikowanych i niewystawianych za życia pisarza i odkrytych dopiero w 1945 i 1959 roku. Żeromski przez całe życie fascynował się teatrem, czego wyrazem może być na przykład jego nieukończony esej "Pochwała sztuki teatru" z 1924 roku lub odpowiedź na ankietę przygotowaną przez "Przegląd Warszawski" dotyczącą Teatru Narodowego w Warszawie, który wtedy ponownie otwierał swoje podwoje. Jego poglądy są bliskie ideom głoszonym przez twórcę narodowej sceny, Wojciecha Bogusławskiego, a także wszystkim  formułowanym w XIX wieku poglądom, które podkreślały społeczną i patriotyczną misję polskiego teatru. Artystyczna wyobraźnia pisarza kształtowała się na podstawie konwencji teatru XIX wieku, opartego na iluzji scenicznej, zasadzie psychologicznej wiarygodności i wymaganiach naturalnego wyrazu aktorskiego. Głosząc pierwszeństwo deklamacji i słowa poetyckiego w teatrze, Żeromski opowiadał się za literackimi teoriami dramatu. Grzech i Dramatu akt pierwszy (który pozostał nieukończony) to dowód zdolności dramaturgicznych autora. W obu tekstach jego nowatorskie podejście do tematyki i problemów społecznych łączy się z konwencjami dramatu i teatru XIX wieku. Pierwsza inscenizacja Grzechu z nowym zakończeniem napisanym przez Leona Kruczkowskiego w 1950 roku stanowi interesujący epizod w historii polskiego życia teatralnego w połowie XX wieku, świadczący o ówczesnych ograniczeniach ideologicznych i politycznych.
    This article offers a context-bound interpretation of two early dramas written by Stefan Żeromski, i.e. Grzech (The Sin) and Dramatu akt pierwszy (A Drama’s First Act), which remained unpublished and were never staged during his lifetime. The texts were only discovered in 1945 and 1959, respectively. Żeromski had been fascinated with theatre throughout his life, which is evident, for example, in his unfinished essay Pochwała sztuki teatru (‘Apology for the Art of Theatre,’ 1924) or in his answer to the survey prepared by Przegląd Warszawski about the Narodowy Theatre in Warsaw, reopening at the time. His views are reminiscent of ideas propounded by the founder of the national stage, Wojciech Bogusławski, as well as of all the views formulated throughout the 19th century that emphasised the social and patriotic mission of Polish theatre. The artistic imagination of the writer had been shaped by the conventions of 19th-century theatre, based on stage illusion, the principle of psychological verisimilitude and requirements of natural acting expression. By professing the primacy of declamation and poetic word in theatre, Żeromski sided with literary theories of drama. Grzech and Dramatu akt pierwszy (which remained unfinished) both exhibit the author’s knack for dramaturgy. They both combined novelty as to subject matter and treatment of social problems with some conventions of 19th-century drama and theatre. The first ever production of Grzech, supplied with a new ending written by Leon Kruczkowski, put on in 1950 is an interesting episode in the history of Polish theatre life in the middle of the 20th century, bearing testimony to its ideological and political limitations.

    The article discusses several Slovak plays with the theme of the Holocaust; namely Ticho (Silence) by Juraj Váh, Holokaust (Holocaust) by Viliam Klimáček, and Rabínka (The Woman Rabbi) by Anna Grusková. It also briefly refers to Návrat do života (Return to Life) and Antigona a tí druhí (Antigone and Those Others) by Peter Karvaš, both mediating traumas from concentration camps. Two plays (Ticho and Návrat do života) were written and staged immediately after the Second World War. Karvaš’s Antigona is a rare occurrence of the theme in Slovak drama during the Communism (in the early 1960s), whereas Klimáček’s and Grusková’s plays are recent, both staged in 2012. The article focuses on several aspects of these five plays: on dramatic characters representing “victims”, “witnesses” and “culprits” (Panas, quoted in Gawliński 2007: 19); on references about and/or representation of the Holocaust in dramatic texts; and on the type of the conflict(s) in the plays. It also mentions specific approaches of respective authors when dealing with the theme of the Holocaust, as well as with the relevance of their reflection of the theme for Slovak society in respective periods

    This article tries to outline the history of the theater of the absurd in Poland by focusing on the metaphor of theatrum mundi (a device which is characteristic feature of this type of drama) and its use by Tymoteusz Karpowicz in his dramas Dziwny pasażer [A Strange Passenger], Charon od świtu do świtu [Charon from Dawn to Dawn], Kiedy ktoś zapuka [When Somebody Knocks], Człowiek z absolutnym węchem [The Man with an Absolute Sence of Smell], Przerwa w podróży [A Break in a Journey]. This metatheatrical device enables the dramatist to create a world of playacting for its own sake, a world without God, with characters unable to look beyond the exigencies of their role and thus to express his disenchantment with the 20th century and his estrangement from the post-World War II reality. It also enables him to explore the mechanisms of theatrical performance and the role of language in the creation of reality.

    The article presents literary image of queen Bona appearing in Polish nineteenth and twentieth century drama and makes an attempt at explaining the reasons for painting such an image. The action of the majority of plays discussed (written in the nineteenth- and the beginning of the twentieth century) was inspired by the stormy course of marriage between Sigismund Augustus and Barbara Radziwiłł while Bona, as a character depicted in dark colours, was opposed to excessively idealised Barbara. The queen from the Sforza family was shown as a woman blinded by hatred, power-thirsty, a cunning and unscrupulous plotter, pitiless poisoner, foreigner acting against the interests of Poles and implementing the controversial teaching of her countryman Machiavelli. The negative and historically false image became blurred with the passage of years to change radically as result of a more critical attitude to Barbara in the literary works written after the Second World War. From a bad monarch wishing Poland ill, Bona turned to a wise ruler and far-sighted politician defending the interest of her second homeland. The article discusses separately radically differing images of queen Bona outlined in two dramas set in Bari and not inspired by Sigismund Augustus’ marriage. Additionally the stage history of one of the dramas is presented.
    W artykule omówiono literacki wizerunek królowej Bony w polskich dramatach dziewiętnasto- i dwudziestowiecznych oraz podjęto próbę zrozumienia jego genezy. Akcja większości omawianych utworów, napisanych w XIX i na początku XX wieku, zainspirowana jest burzliwymi losami małżeństwa Zygmunta Augusta z Barbarą Radziwiłłówną, a postać Bony, odmalowana w ciemnych barwach, przeciwstawiona jest nadmiernie wyidealizowanej postaci Barbary. Królową z rodu Sforzów ukazano jako kobietę zaślepioną nienawiścią i żądną władzy, sprytną i pozbawioną skrupułów intrygantkę, bezlitosną trucicielkę, a także cudzoziemkę, która działa na szkodę Polaków i wprowadza w życie kontrowersyjne nauki swojego rodaka Machiavellego. Ten negatywny wizerunek, niezgodny z rzeczywistością historyczną, z biegiem lat coraz bardziej traci na wyrazistości, by zmienić się radykalnie w utworach powstałych po drugiej wojnie światowej za sprawą bardziej krytycznego ukazania Barbary. Ze złej i wrogiej Polsce monarchini Bona staje się mądrą władczynią i dalekowzrocznym politykiem, broniącym interesów przybranej ojczyzny. W dalszej części artykułu omówiono skrajnie różny sposób przedstawienia królowej Bony w dwóch dramatach rozgrywających się w Bari i niezainspirowanych małżeństwem Zygmunta Augusta. Dodatkowo ukazano dzieje sceniczne jednego z tych utworów.

    The Arabic world is proud of its past and grandeur of former times dating to the pre-islam period and the era of the rise of Islam. The article is an attempt to describe the theme of glory in the Arab literature of the renaissance concerning this region from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this time a new Arabic literature developed and it included the so-called poetry of traditional current and drama as an innovatory literary form called neoclassicism, which had not previously existed. Both genres referred to the brilliant past of Arabia and the Muslim civilization, encouraging Arabs to embrace its revival. These genres were basing on the motif of majd – ‘glory’, ‘praise’, ‘fame’. The poetry included, first of all, panegyrics and poems expressing a longing for previous glory while neoclassic dramatists presented the same theme with examples of ancient communities, tribal legends and the history of the Arabic-Muslim Caliphate. The article aims to show the literary pictures of Arabic grandeur and glory outlined by the renaissance writers. With reference to the changes in literature, the paper argues that since the 1950s, poetry and drama writers have rejected the concept of a glorious past and criticized the dreadful and inglorious moments in the history of Arab regions.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony mało znanemu dramatowi Bunt Absalona Stanisława Miłaszewskiego (1937), który mieści się w kręgu utworów o tematyce inspirowanej biblijnymi Księgami Samuela, skoncentrowanej wokół postaci i dokonań izraelskiego króla Dawida, historii i konsekwencji jego grzechu z Batszebą. Trawestacja biblijnej historii w dramacie nie odtwarza przebiegu zdarzeń w sposób linearny, ale stanowi punkt odniesienia dla egzystencjalnej refleksji związanej z upadkiem i nawróceniem człowieka. Cel artykułu to analiza zasadniczego problemu rozgrywającego się konfliktu dramatycznego, jakim jest zagadnienie ojcostwa osadzone na płaszczyźnie relacji Dawida z synem Absalonem, a zarazem w sferze odniesień człowieka do Boga. Zbuntowany syn w momencie granicznym na nowo doświadcza drogi życia w personalnej więzi z Bogiem Ojcem. Jednostkowe dzieje upadku, cierpienia, pokuty i nawrócenia stają się w Buncie Absalona uniwersalnym exemplum ludzkiego losu, postrzeganego w chrześcijańskiej optyce zbawczego planu.
    The article is devoted to the little-known drama Bunt Absalona by Stanisław Miłaszewski (1937), which fits into the realm of works inspired by the biblical Books of Samuel that is focused on the figure and achievements of the Israeli king – David and on the history and consequences of his sin with Bathsheba. The travesty of the biblical history in the drama does not recreate the course of events in a linear way but is a reference point for existential reflection related to the fall and conversion of a man. The purpose of the article is to analyze the essential problem of the ongoing dramatic conflict, which is the topic of fatherhood grounded in the relationship between David and his son Absalon, and at the same time in the sphere of man’s relationship to God. Arebellious son, at turning point, experiences anew the way of life in a personal relationship with God the Father. The individual history of fall, suffering, penance and conversion becomes in Bunt Absalona a universal exemplum of human fate, perceived from the Christian view of the salvation plan.

    In this paper the authoress refers to examples from the period between the 60s and the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century in Croatia which best illustrate not only the playwriting but also the lethalness of the act through mostly political drama typical of the period in question. At the time, the theatre was more often than not „the only space in which people were allowed to think and talk politically” (B. Senker). The paper discusses the following dramas: Perković’s Closed Afternoon (1966), Šoljan’s Diocletian’s Palace (1969), Kušan’s The End of Freedom (1971), Marović’s Antigona, the Queen of Thebes, and Themistocles (both from the early 1980s), and Brešan’s Julius Caesar (1994; publ. 1997). Dramatic literature and the theatre of these decades did not only reflect the happenings in Croatia within the former Yugoslav state; many of the above and other authors paid for their courage to write these texts with being passed over in silence, and with intellectual, political and existential harassment.

    The motif of the wanderer is not new in the French theatre, but in the first half of the twentieth century due to the general crisis of values, some authors refer to it in order to display the plight of modern man. One of them is H.-R. Lenormand, an author not very well-known to a wider audience nowadays, who under the influence of Strindberg writes plays which refer to the expressionist aesthetics. He creates a lot of works in which he employs the technique of the station drama.. It is this form that allows him to focus on the evolution of the character and his metamorphosis. While in Les Ratés he shows buffoons heading for the brink of despair and finally their certain death, in L'Homme et ses Fantômes he focuses on the inner journey of the main character, who is looking for the reason for his suffering in his own soul.

    Celem artykułu jest przyjrzenie się pewnym zmianom w komunikacji społecznej w Norwegii, dotyczącym form adresatywnych, czyli słów i wyrażeń używanych do zwracania się do rozmówcy. Ponieważ dramat wydaje się być najwłaściwszym materiałem do tego typu badań ze względu na nasycenie go formami deiktycznymi, typowymi dla dialogu mówionego, między innymi właśnie zaimkami i imionami własnymi, materiał do badań pochodzi z wybranych dramatów takich pisarzy ostatniego stulecia jak Henryk Ibsen (Hedda Gabler), Jens Bjørneboe (Til lykke med dagen, Tilfellet Torgersen, Dongery), Cecilie Løveid (Du, bli her!, Måkespisere, Vinteren revner) czy Jon Fosse (Gitarmannen, Nokon kjem til å komme, Dei døde hundane, Sa ka la). Przeanalizowane teksty indykują duże zmiany w systemie adresatywnym: usunięcie z języka większości barier komunikacyjnych (nierówności w obrębie zaimków, tytułów, asymetrii płciowej i nadmiernej uczuciowości), co z jednej strony komunikację ułatwia, z drugiej strony jednak egalitaryzacja nie wpływa na potrzeby społeczne samotnego człowieka, czyli jego chęć do nawiązywania czy utrzymywania kontaktu
    The aim of this article is to take a closer look at certain changes in social communication in Norway, connected to forms of address, that is words and expressions one uses to address his or her conversation partner(s). Since dramatic texts seem to be the most adequate material for this sort of research, because of the deictic expressions typical for spoken dialogue they contain (among others: pronouns and proper nouns), the material this research is based upon comes from selected dramatic texts written by such playwrights of the previous century as Henrik Ibsen (Hedda Gabler), Jens Bjørneboe (Til lykke med dagen, Tilfellet Torgersen, Dongery), Cecilie Løveid (Du, bli her!, Måkespisere, Vinteren revner) or Jon Fosse (Gitarmannen, Nokon kjem til å komme, Dei døde hundane, Sa ka la). The analysed texts indicate significant changes in the addressative system: removal of most of the communicational barriers from the language (inequality regarding pronouns, titles, gender asymmetry and exaggerated emotionality), which, on the one hand, makes communication easier, and, on the other hand, one can consider that such egalitarisation does not influence the social needs of a solitary man or his/her willingness to establish or maintain contact.

    Artykuł jest komparatystycznym studium na temat koncepcji teatru Karola Wojtyły i Emila Zegadłowicza. Mimo iż powstaje wiele prac poświęconych młodzieńczej twórczości literackiej i działalności teatralnej Wojtyły, wciąż nie w pełni przeanalizowane są wątki badań teatrologicznych. Dlatego istotna wydaje się próba ukierunkowania badawczej refleksji na źródła, z jakich czerpali obaj twórcy, kształtując swą poetycką wrażliwość, koncepcję człowieka i świata uzewnętrznianą w strukturze dzieł dramatycznych, wpisaną w myśl teatralną, poglądy na temat misji sztuki i aktora. Rekonesansowa próba porównania kompozycji wczesnych dramatów Zegadłowicza i Wojtyły wskazuje na wspólne korzenie postrzegania roli teatru i model dramaturgii wyrastającej z tradycyjnych, misteryjno-moralitetowych form teatralnych. Widoczne są również podobne kierunki i obszary artystycznych penetracji, pojmowania estetycznych kanonów sztuki, wartości regionalnej kultury, przy równoczesnej odrębności światopoglądu i twórczości obu artystów.
    This article is a comparative study of the concept of the theatre of Karol Wojtyła and Emil Zegadłowicz. Although many works have been devoted to the youthful literary output and theatrical activity of Wojtyła, the themes of theatre studies have still not yet been fully analysed. Therefore, it would seem to be important to research those sources from which both artists drew, those that shaped their poetic sensitivity, their concept of man and their concept of the world as externalised in the structure of the dramatic works, inscribed in their theatrical thought and in their views on the mission of art and the actor. An attempt to compare the compositions of Zegadłowicz’s and Wojtyła’s early plays points to the common roots of the perception of the role of theatre and a model of dramaturgy arising from traditional, mystery-morality plays. Similar trends and areas of artistic penetration, the comprehension of the aesthetic canons of art and the value of regional culture are also visible, while the world-views and creativity of both artists are separate.

    This article confronts the text of A Literary Prize, a comedy by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, with its contemporary reviews. Staged by the experimental theatre Reduta (directed by Zofi a Modrzewska) in April 1937 at Teatr Nowy in Warsaw (under the directorship of Jerzy Leszczyński), it fell into complete oblivion which lasted until the recent discovery of the director’s copy buried at the Academy of Theatre Library in Warsaw. While contemporary reviewers found A Literary Prize to be one of the weaker works of an outstanding poet, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska in her letters contrasted the ‘violent attacks’ of the critics with a fairly warm reception of the general audience. The play was performed to capacity audiences until 19 May, and revived for a single occasion a year later in Poznań. A Literary Prize juxtaposes two plots. One, with elements of comedy of manners, follows the fortunes of a young girl, Taida Serebrzycka, who tries to navigate between two men with literary ambitions, Klemens Niedzicki and Albin Niekawski, while the other explores the challenges faced by prospective writers, especially the role of prize-winning competitions in the discovery of talent and the building of reputation. This article is focused primarily on the character of Taida, who makes the impression of being somewhat scatterbrained and snobbish, but is in fact a strong-minded, independent young woman conscious of her sexuality. She wants an honest, equal relationship, and is ready to fi ght hard for her happiness, which does include sexual satisfaction. The analysis of the reception of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s play, and especially the characterization of Taida, the female protagonist, is complemented with an examination of the mechanisms of the critical discourse.
