Akademia Wojskowa w West Point jest najważniejszą uczelnią wojskową w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej kształtującą od ponad dwóch stuleci kadrę oficerską amerykańskiej armii. Na mocy międzynarodowych porozumień również Polskie Siły Zbrojne mogą kształcić swoich żołnierzy w tej instytucji. Dotychczas mury uczelni opuściło pięciu polskich kadetów. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu wykazanie, że Akademia w West Point nadal spełnia swoje zadanie, a Polska powinna podjąć starania o to, aby wysłać na studia w tej uczelni kolejnych polskich kadetów.
The US Military Academy at West Point is the most important military academy in the United States forming, for more than two centuries, the US military officer corps. The Polish Armed Forces can educate their officers in this institution. So far, only five Polish cadets graduated the West Point. This article argues that while the Academy still excels in its mission and continues to offer slots to several countries, Poland should make a decision to apply yet again to send cadets to West Point.

While analysing the attitude of Primate of Poland Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński to West Pomerania, we may enumerate three basic aspects. Firstly, the role which Cardinal played by fulfilling the post of the ordinary of the ordinariate of Gorzów. He was then interested, among others, in the provision of the continuity of management in this territory. Secondly, mainly thanks to his efforts and involvement of bishops of Gorzów, they succeeded in 1972 in dividing the big apostolic administration of Gorzów into three smaller dioceses. Thirdly, the issue concerning the relation with the Christians from West Pomerania is equally significant. Primate was very frequently visiting this region. In the opinion of the author of the article, the words “Concern and action” reflect best his interest in the fate of the Christians, who appeared after the war in the so-called Regained Lands.

Heavy metal pollution is an ever increasing problem of our lakes. These toxic heavy metals entering in aquatic environment are adsorbed onto particulate matter, although they can form free metal ions and soluble complexes that are available for uptake by biological organisms. The increase in residue levels of heavy metal content in water, sediments and biota has resulted in decreased productivity and increase in exposure of humans to harmful substances. Many of these metals tend to remain in the ecosystem and eventually move from one compartment to the other within the food chain. Food chain contamination by heavy metals has become a burning issue in recent years because of their potential accumulation in biosystems through contaminated water, soil, sediment and air. Dąbie Lake is an integral part of the River Odra estuary. It is a shallow (2.5 m mean depth) water body with two distinct basins: the large (Dąbie Wielkie) and the small (Dąbie Małe). The aim of the studies, carried out in the years 2008 - 2009, was to determine the content of Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Mercury (Hg), Nickel (Ni), Lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn) in the waters of Dąbie Lake, being the internal part of the tertiary Odra estuary.

Despite the brief euphoria caused by the demise of the Communist Bloc in the Cold War, the West was finally able to comprehend new threats and challenges to the world order after the end of the Cold War. However, the West was not able to offer effective responses to the specific manifestations of these threats. The main reason for this is the situation, which can be defined ‘the West’s confusion’. First of all, that is misunderstanding of the importance of West’s leadership as a prerequisite for a stable post-cold war world order. The West’s leadership has historically been the result of a long process and the interaction of many factors, it is based on a successful model of social development, the core of which is a triad of individualism, the market economy and liberal democracy. Two visions of the West – both as the cultural community and the community of highly developed countries – are interconnected, but in the context of the problems of the contemporary world politics the West is foremost a community of developed democratic countries that has acquired a multifaceted institutionalisation, including in the form of security complexes. Overcoming of the West’s confusion implies the harmonisation of values and interests as factors of West’s behaviour on the international arena. Regular confusion demonstrated by the West and its unwillingness to take over the leadership and responsibility encourages two major destructive players: China and Russia. The world without the West (as the organising system power) is a world of chaos and disarray, even more dangerous than the world of balance of powers, which led to the two world wars.

Social network of the population of West Pomerania, which is a part of the people of the sea, has a heterogeneous character in both – the structural and functional perspectives. The greater part of Szczecin inhabitants, the regional capital, is derived from the poorly urbanized areas and is not prepared to live and work in the port city. The theoretical and empirical basis for discussion in the article are the Author's own research and 70 years of scientific achievements of sociologists from West Pomerania. The article consists of three parts. The first discusses the problems of adaptation and migration to the new socio-cultural environment. The second part presents the process of formalization and institutionalization of sociological circles. Here began the first research and publication attempts. The third part is the university phase, which continue researches started earlier on people of the sea and littoral and extend it on international issues, published in own scientific journal Annuals of Marine Sociology and in other national and international publications and also in the “Szczecin Encyclopedia”, released on the issue of the 70th anniversary of the Szczecin City.

The article is about the tenth image by famous Marx Brothers. Author of the text carried out a thorough analysis of the film Go West for the current in the game with western conventions. The text consists of five parts – introduction and four separate mini-chapters. In the first context the statement made b y the film Go West (by Edward Buzzel) the masterpiece of silent cinema – Iron Horse directed by John Ford, seeing the first image of a series of references to the other one. The second part is devoted to the image of Indians in the film Go West in the context of the existing schemes in the cinema of the thirties and forties. In the next section the author discusses the functions used in film music, and in the last – the final chase sequence, seeing in it references to the tradition of film slapstick. In conclusion, the author states that the game with conventions manifests itself not only in the film for a specific genre, but also the cinema in general, which in 1940 was an innovative solution.
