Opis:
The article undertakes a polemological reflection which is not limited to historiography and philosophy of history, being an attempt at reaching multidimensional and non-standard vision of war. It may seem that studying a computer simulation of people’s lives during the war conflict is far from what a literary scholar should be doing. Nevertheless, This War of Mine redefines the notion of computer games and of classically defined agon. The interactive production of Warsaw 11 bit studios becomes a pretext for studying the ways in which new media refer to literature. The unique experience of war depicted by This War of Mine draws from literary testimonies but at the same time it captures more than literature could ever do. Is the “word in play” the missing link of Bachtin’s equation?

This paper will discuss aspects concerning authorship, memory, and war representation, as well as trauma and healing. In order to do so, I will explore the writing of war memoirs and/or the re-enactment of war experiences on the stage as two ways of expressing and coping with war trauma. In both cases, the concept of the author, a war veteran as first-person narrator or self-performer, is central to the representation of the traumatic memories of war. It is precisely through this interaction between the author, as a legitimate witness, and source of authentic and reliable information, that the readership/audience connects emotionally with the experience of the combatants and can empathise with their situation. A theoretical conceptualisation of war memoir writing, and testimonial theatre will be illustrated with specific examples of texts connected with the Falklands War (UK-Argentina, 1982). The dominant perspective of the reflection are veterans’ stories.

In the text the author focuses on the economic aspects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict that erupted in 2014. Undoubtedly, the economic war is a crucial dimension of hybrid war in Ukraine that definitely should not be neglected. The author clearly differentiated six principal constituents of the Russian-Ukrainian economic war which were subsequently discussed in the text. Notably, even during periods of unreliable and frail cease-fires economic war were still was continued. Economic war appears to become a permanent and fixed element of bilateral Russian-Ukrainian relations at least in the short to medium term.

Normative acts applicable in the Republic of Poland do not lack a multitude of formulations of terms such as: war, state of war or time of war. The lack of legally binding definitions and the inconsistency of the use of identical definitions lead to different, often contradictory interpretations of particular situations, which may have different legal consequences. Only a precise and detailed definition of these concepts, preferably by incorporating them into national or international law, would dispel many doubts and close the way to sometimes contradictory interpretations, which is particularly important for security and defence concepts and issues. Therefore, in this paper the author will present definitions and regulations resulting from Polish legal acts, relating to war, war time and the state of war.

Opis:
Every war is not only the fight of the armies but also a war of the ideologies. One of the forms of the ideological war is propaganda posters. Over forty posters presented and analyzed in this article come from the Polish-Soviet war in 1919-1921. The research work is based on grounded theory procedures adopted for visual data analyses. Particularly useful was a method of coding families worked out by Barney Glaser and modified to the visual data analysis by Krzysztof Konecki. The author reconstructed several basic motifs, formal solutions, and communication strategies (i.e., continuity and continuation versus avant-garde and revolution, image of the enemy and “one’s own” imagination, strategic conversion) used by artists-ideologists from both sides of the conflict.

Opis:
Hybrid war: real casualties in UkraineThe Russo-Ukrainian war that broke out in 2014 in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea continues to be all too rarely noticed in the West. Observers comment widely on the novel ‘hybrid’ character of warfare as developed and trialed by the Kremlin worldwide during the recent years, but pay scant attention to the Russian ‘training ground’ in eastern Ukraine. The article probes into the realities of the ongoing RussoUkrainian war, alongside the ideological underpinnings of the Kremlin’s intervention and Ukraine’s response to this attack. It appears that the Russian government adopted ethnolinguistic nationalism, typical of Central Europe, namely, that all Russian-speakers constitute the Russian nation, especially if their communities compactly inhabit areas directly bordering on the Russian Federation.

Opis:
In this article, I trace the process through which World War II (WWII) has become the „good war” in American culture. Drawing on a range of books and articles published on the subject —and often written by the war’s veterans—I summarize their findings considering the essentially mythical nature of the conflict’ common memory. The well-known aspects of this myth include the view that WWII was a straightforward struggle between good and evil, that the U.S. soldiers who fought it belonged to “the greatest generation,” and that it was ultimately an expression and activization of American honor, heroism, and gallantry. Further on, I argue that beginning in the 1980s, a resurgence of cultural interest in WWII becomes evident, but now tinged not only with the emerging image of “the good war,” but also with nostalgia—and that the “nostalgization” of the conflict was caused directly by, and indeed possible only because of, the U.S. experience in Vietnam. I trace the multifaceted and multiple references to WWII in Vietnam War narratives—but also to Vietnam in some nostalgic representations of WWII.

The article is an attempt to outline the issue of help, care and lifesaving of the children in Poland in the war and occupation period (1939–1945). This attempt focuses on the following areas: individual trauma, population losses, the situation of danger, social solidarity, and actions of helping children. The article describes the main areas of war dangers and crimes committed against the children, and also the range and forms of helping children (institutional and individual). Apart from informative and ordering aims, the text signals the need of pedagogical-historical research on the history of childhood, seen from the perspective of the Second World War and occupation in the years 1939–1945.

Opis:
The classical linear war is nowadays changing into rebel, mutinous, non-linear warfare, without apparent fronts and clearly determined opponents. Its three main factors are understood differently: strength (power), time and space. The main determinant of a country's power is no longer the population, territory, or even the strength of the economy. The most important factor is the social morale, the identity and integrity of societies and nations, and the ability to impose its vision of political order on other societies. Public diplomacy (including cultural diplomacy) becomes more important than classical diplomacy. The leading form of realization of political goals becomes an information war, understood as a mass impact on the sphere of consciousness of whole societies, aimed at the exchange of their views in a specific area of life. Diffused war is a strategic concept assuming a dispersed, simultaneous attack on many directions and planes of organization of political and social life of the opponent, bypassing the existing legal order (national and international).

Hybrid war represents one of the most used terms in the area of military and security affairs in the last years, especially after the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine. It appears still more frequently not only in scientific or specialized military or security publications, studies or articles, but also in various journals, news, reports or debates out of military or security community. It might be seemed that it is a new term or even new type of conflict, but it is not. Hybrid war is really no new phenomenon, it is known for many years; however, after the Russian annexation of Crimea, it is much more popular and used. On the other hand, the majority of wider public do not know what the mentioned term exactly represents, and that is the reason why an author of the article deals with this topic and, through gained results of the research, tries to explain the essence of examined problem.

The article aims to analyze video game This War of Mine with The Little Ones DLC from the perspective of children characters. It argues that the game provides a double role reversal, which determines player’s ethical approach. The first reversal is based on the well-described mechanism of procedural rhetorics and consists of assuming the role of a victim of war rather than a warrior or a warmonger. The second reversal is established by forcing player to create an environment in which a child can be safe and play. In doing so, the player has to proactively maintain an illusion of control – the very thing the game itself constantly takes from them, leading to the bitter afterthought that war is most certainly not a game.

Opis:
Direct witness and thoughtful meditation are core values of content and form in the canon of French Great War fiction and were established from the earliest narratives in 1914. Moral authority and ownership of the truth were both the privilege of soldier-writers like Barbusse and Dorgelès, who also sought insightful meaning in their direct experience. Their works remain “in collective memory” and continue to be published, read, and analysed (Grabes). With the passage of time, the gaps in insights and memory of direct witness were fi lled by fi ction in the works of canonical post-memory writers (Rigney). The rediscovery and reappraisal of disparate elements of the war by historians and non-canonical genre writers restored value to some of these objects, such as executions and the reintegration of veterans into society, that had “fall[en] out of frames of attention” (Assmann). Crime fiction novels set during the Great War, by virtue of their non-canonical status as genre fiction, were not restrained by acknowledged and often depreciatory imperatives of form and content. Unencumbered by these canonical constraints, the works of crime fi ction writers tell a “counter-history,” thus transferring a proscribed and obfuscated subject to the public sphere (Assmann).

In this article, the author addresses the question whether individual citizens are responsible for the aggressive policy of their national leader by comparing the views of Hannah Arendt, Michael Walzer and Jeff McMahan on the problem of personal responsibility. The author agrees with Arendt and McMahan that responsibility presupposes thinking. Taking into account a number of arguments, the author claims that responsibility should be interpreted as a collective duty. Guilt, however, is found at the individual level. A person may be guilty for his own decisions and be responsible for the decisions of the government, but he could not be condemned for the crimes of the latter. In conclusion, the author claims that this idea applies at the international level as well, because states are collectively responsible for maintaining justice and peace in the world.
