This study estimated the profitability and the level of technical efficiency of the onion farms. It also identified factors that contribute to technical efficiency in onion production. Data were collected from 180 randomly selected onion farms using a pretested interview schedule. Partial budgeting techniques and the stochastic production frontier were modeled for data analysis. Profitability indices revealed a value of 0.771 and 0.280 for operating ratio and return to capital invested respectively. The mean technical efficiency score for the farms was 88.35%. Quantities of water and onion seedlings, farm size, household size, and farming experience significantly affected the technical efficiency of the farms. The study concluded that onion production was profitable in the study area.  The government should look into the possibility of providing an alternative source of irrigation for the farmers to conserve water and lower the cost of irrigation.

The Forest of Upper Alibori is subject to strong agricultural and pastoral pressures from year to year despite the implementation of a forest management plan. It is therefore appropriate to conduct an integrated and spatialized analysis of the effects of these pressures on plant biodiversity from a spatial planning perspective. The research objective is to establish a multi-criteria zoning of the Upper Alibori Forest Reserve that can reconcile biodiversity conservation and sustainable agropastoral exploitation. A methodological approach based on geomatics was adopted. Hierarchical multi-criteria analysis and cross-layer analysis are the main techniques adopted. The state of plant biodiversity, one of the important criteria for multi-criteria zoning. The intersection of the scientific zoning and the zoning proposed by the riparian population shows a similarity of 54%. In the central core, the similarity between the two types of zoning is 32%. Spatially, this similarity is observed along the Alibori River. At the level of the agricultural series, the two zonings show a similarity level of 23%. The elaboration of an integrated zoning made it possible to distinguish several management series. The management series delimited are made up of the central core (32%), the protection series (11%), the production series (17%), the scientific research series (2%), the service series (2%) and the agropastoral and reforestation series (36%). The implementation of such zoning is the responsibility of the forest administration.

Beads have been part of the traditional dress essence of the Africans and other popular cultures of the world. Benin art is phenomena and generally accepted worldwide partly as a result of their resounding uniqueness, peculiarity and exceptional finishing of delicate forms especially those bordering on beads. These beads are used for the making of the Oba’s diadem, dresses and shoes. Some of his flywhisks are made of beads too. In contemporary time, and even in ancient period, the Oba beaded crown continue to evolve to the extent that the style of crown worn then is different from those in vogue today. The Queen Mother’s beaded crown has also gone through some significant changes and processes. Today, what we have is a profoundly gracious and courtly beaded crown. What are the other outstanding importance and weighty functions of the bead to the Benin man and woman and by extension to other popular cultures and traditions of the world? This is what this paper has unearthed, critically appraised and established.

In recent times several features have emerged as regards the contemporary sculptures of Benin. These features have either overtly or covertly created the differences between the ancient and contemporary bronze sculptures of Benin. These unfortunate features includes (1) careless finishing, (2) contemporary bronze are heavier, (3) themes are repeated, (4) lack deep storylines, (5) most times, bronze antiques are forged, and (6) most lack sensitive commanding forms. Indeed, these are the traits which made ancient Benin bronze sculptures resonate, reverberate and resound both in ancient and contemporary time. What therefore should be done to move the contemporary Benin bronze sculptures to a higher artistic level is what this paper seeks to appraise and critically establish.

More than 4.6 mln ha in the Russian Federation are irrigated. Their culvert hydraulic structures are part of network structures and are the most widespread. After the crisis of the 1990s, proper maintenance of many reclamation systems was impossible due to a lack of funds. This led to the loss of about half of the water taken from irrigation sources in irrigation canals. The planned increase in the technical level of irrigation systems requires the automation of the operation of both the entire system as a whole and separately located culverts. This will avoid significant losses of water supply for irrigation and prevent water shortages with the insufficient discipline of water users. Means of hydraulic automation of water supply are being installed on small irrigation canals in Russia. A water flow regulating valve is proposed, with no mechanical movinparts, and gates are not involved in the control process. The operation of the structure is based on the injection effect, in which excess water entering the downstream with a decrease in water consumption begins to circulate between the outlet section of the transit pipe and the diffuser at the end section of the valve. Using the methods of measuring hydrodynamics and the theory of jet devices, theoretical dependences were obtained, which make it possible to determine the main hydraulic characteristics of the structure. The design form of the flow part of the regulator has been developed and a physical model has been made. In a mirror hydraulic flume, the operation modes of the water outlet were studied with and without regulation. The actual values of hydraulic parameters were obtained, which confirmed the validity of the use of theoretical dependencies. The discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental results is within the experimental error. It has been proven that it is possible to circulate excess water between the downstream and intermediate pools of the regulator.

The use of biotechnological approaches to increase soil fertility and productivity allows to obtain sustainable agriculture with lesser use of chemical fertilizers. The present study aimed to determine whether the inoculation of Bacillus panthothenicus, Bacillus thuringiensis, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas syringae, or Serratia marcescens combined with reduced doses of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer can improve the growth and yield of maize on poor ferruginous soils under field conditions in central Benin. For this purpose, maize seeds of the EVDT 97 STR C1 variety were inoculated with 10 ml suspension of five plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains, and the plots were fertilized at seeding with the recommended doses (0, 25, 50, 100%) of 200 kg/ha of NPK and 100 kg of urea for corn cultivation. The study was conducted in a completely randomized design with 3 replicates. The results showed that except for P. syringae , which induced the highest fresh aerial biomass (94.51%) and dry aerial biomass (63.63%), all other parameters were positively improved with inoculation associated with reduced doses of NPK + urea. The best height, leaf area, fresh underground biomass, and grain yield were recorded in response to the application of P. syringae + 50% NPK + urea, with an increase of 26.82, 32.23, 107.57, and 30.64%, respectively, compared to those of the control. The inoculation of seeds with P. syringae + 50% NPK + urea can be considered to be an environmentally sustainable strategy for maize cultivation.

Opis:
The discussion of the subject is preceded by a comprehensive introduction that brings the Ewe people, inhabiting southern Togo and Benin, closer to the reader. Based on historical data and oral tradition, an outline of Ewe’s political structure is presented, starting from the 17th century to the present moment, followed by a description of the traditional social organisation of this people, along with information on the diverse social status of individuals. In this context, the available piecemeal information about the forms of modern slavery and trafficking is included. The main topic is the presentation of Ewe’s traditional kinship system and the importance of family ties. The religious and genealogical dimension of the family is subject to a detailed analysis. A reconstruction of traditional customs, based on information from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is the starting point for presenting the institution of marriage. The article presents in detail the various stages of entering into a marriage: from getting to know each other and the period of engagement, negotiations regarding the size of the dowry, to the description of the wedding rituals. The article ends with information on the changes in marriage customs in the period after the creation of the independent state of Togo.

Beyond the fact that oral literature is poetry, it is the reflection of the society from which it comes or in which it originates. It is place-based and reflects, among other things, the psychology and mentality of its place of origin. In collecting West African oral literature, for example, many European explorers and colonial officials had in mind the study of the psychology, lifestyle and beliefs of West African peoples (cf. Lanmadousselo 2012: 187–190). The present study deals with the question of the image of white people in Beninese proverbs. The topic has been very little studied so far, although it is present in African proverbs. Since, in comparison to German proverbs, there are no reference works on Fon proverbs yet, field research was carried out in Fon areas with informants, so that 15 proverbs are available for this study. The processing of the corpus consists, on the one hand, of transcribing the collected proverbs to the Fon language, with the aim of preserving the original form of these proverbs. On the other hand, the aim is to translate the transcribed versions into German in order to ensure the clarity of the work. The analysis of the collected proverbs consisted of examining the proverbs in their situational context. The choice of this methodological approach is explained by the fact that most of the collected Fon proverbs about white people refer to historical events such as slavery, colonization or start from the postcolonial context. The analysis shows to what extent the image of white people in Fon proverbs is contextual.

Starting from the definition of the concept of law among the Ewe people, se (its literal meaning is a border that should not be crossed) and justice dzodzoenyenye (in the ontological sense) and nutefew (in the existential sense), this article presents the process of judgment and forgiveness in the culture of Ewe people living in southern Togo and Benin. In Ewe culture, the judgment process takes place within the community, the immediate family or among the villagers. Wrongdoing is defined as disregarding the relationship with the god Mawu, insulting the deities of Tro or voodoo, disrespecting ancestors or committing offenses against a family or village. These offences are reflected in the language, in expressions describing the misdeeds. Then the process of judgment itself is presented, with traditional judgment procedures, traditional trial, judgment, forgiveness and cleansing. The acts and consequences of adultery and the afofofo cleansing ritual are also analysed. The verdict itself, importantly, is dictated by a desire to resolve the conflict and put an end to the dissonance in the community.

Some of these materials are fiberglass, bronze, metals, stone, clay and wood. Of all these materials, wood have come up as one of the most outstanding, dependable and striking. Three very evocative wood sculptures attracting attention and critical review are Life in Phases, Shame and Life is a Scuffle. These three ever powering and fascinating sculptures continue to speak volumes of the shamelessness among our greedy political office holders, the struggle to break even in our ever demanding and corrupt society. Is there any solution in sight for mankind’s daunting problems? This and more questions are what this paper seeks to answer and critically establish.

A palynological study of a 30 m borehole within the Akoka campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria revealed Late Quaternary paleo-vegetational, climatic and environmental changes. Sixteen samples at a regular interval of 2 m were subjected to standard palynological and sedimentological techniques. Six pollen zones representing six paleoclimatic phases within the Late Quaternary period were recognized. The age model is based on two radiocarbon dates (6 m: 5,495 ± 25 ¹⁴C yr and 12 m: 15,660 ± 40 ¹⁴C yr) and, by extrapolation, the sequence spans approximately the last 35,000 yr BP. The African maximum transgression and the African Humid Period (wet paleoclimate maximum) – the Nouaktchottian, and Pre-Nouaktchottian respectively – were recognized, while the Ogolian II (Erg II) was stratigraphically recognized and the Upper Inchirian extrapolated. Recovered diatom frustules with other proxies were employed for paleoclimatic and paleoecological deductions. Four hydrological cycles and three paleoecological settings were identified. Results from this work indicate the co-eval record of paleoclimatic events across Africa, suspected cooling during the African maximum transgression in Nigeria and the usefulness of coastal freshwater swamp sediments for paleoclimate studies.

As the assessment of an employee’s job performance, performance appraisal help employees improve their performance, pay and chances for promotion; foster communication between managers and employees and increase the employees’ and the organization’s effectiveness. Done poorly, it actually can have a negative effect-it can cause resentment, reduce motivation, diminish performance and even expose an organization to legal action. It is against this backdrop that this study analyzes the effect of performance appraisal on employee’s job performance in Edo State Internal Revenue ser-vice, Benin City, Nigeria using survey research method. Non-probabilistic sampling techniques comprising of purposeful and convenience techniques were used to elicit information via questionnaire from 150 respondents Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings of the study showed that performance appraisal (management by objectives, performance feedback and 360-degree appraisal) positively and significantly influence employee’s job performance in Edo State Internal Revenue Service, Benin City, Nigeria. Requisite conclusion and recommendations were provided in the light of theoretical and empirical findings.
W świetle ustaleń teoretycznych i empirycznych zostały przedstawione odpowiednie wnioski i zalecenia. Wydajność pracy, ocena wydajności, zarządzanie przez cele, informacja zwrotna, ocena metodą 360 stopni

Opis:
This paper presents the results of applying a new iterative method to linear and nonlinear fractional partial differential equations in fluid mechanics. A numerical analysis was performed to find an exact solution of the fractional wave equation and fractional Burgers’ equation, as well as an approximate solution of fractional KdV equation and fractional Boussinesq equation. Fractional derivatives of the order are described using Caputo's definition with 01<α≤ or 12<α≤. A comparative analysis of the results obtained using a new iterative method with those obtained by the Adomian decomposition method showed the first method to be more efficient and simple, providing accurate results in fewer computational operations. Given its flexibility and ability to solve nonlinear equations, the iterative method can be used to solve more complex linear and nonlinear fractional partial differential equations.
