    The article is devoted to the social margin's role in the process of social change. The author aims at defining the concept of marginality and suggesting a typology of social marginality on the basis of social and cultural criteria. She distinguishes social marginality, cultural marginality and socio-cultural marginality. Additionally, she describes psychological marginality as a separate type. Social marginality is typical of people sharing larger society's values but performing only irregular functions in this society. Cultural marginality is characteristic of a group whose values are different than these of the larger society but which performs regular functions in this society. The author emphasizes the potential for incurring change that marginal groups possess: this potential could result in creative impulses or in destruction depending on the configuration of marginality and historical context. The following adaptive reactions of a marginal group could be distinguished: conformism, innovation, ritualization, retreatism or rebellion.

    Cel badań. Celem badania było przeanalizowanie, w jaki sposób Maria Konopnicka wykorzystała w swej noweli Anusia, po części o charakterze wspomnieniowym, motyw inicjacji, zwłaszcza w kobiecość. Metodologia. Dociekania oparłam na ustaleniach Mircei Eliadego, Brunona Bettelheima czy Mary Douglas. Powstało dzięki temu szerokie tło, uwzględniające perspektywę religioznawczą, antropologiczną i psychiatryczną, na którym dobrze widać wielkie zalety ujęcia literackiego, całą jego subtelność i sugestywność. Czerpałam również z rozpoznań feministycznych, z tekstów Sandry M. Gilbert i Susan Gubar, Nancy K. Miller czy Krystyny Kłosińskiej, aby podkreślić wyraźną u Konopnickiej persewerację motywów często obecnych w literaturze kobiet: szaleństwo, przebywanie na marginesie, szycie, żałoba. Wyniki. W literaturze XIX wieku i nieco młodszej spotykamy nieraz obrazy domów, w których część kobiet mieszka za kulisami, w miejscach, gdzie życie toczy się intensywniej niż to odmienne, poddane pełnej kontroli życie salonów, często przedstawianych jako bezduszne, a u Konopnickiej wręcz nieobecnych. Ta inna przestrzeń staje się też przestrzenią innej kultury. By to pokazać, przywołuję przykłady baśni i ballad, a także modlitw, legend, pieśni nabożnych, w kulturach tradycyjnych wykonywanych przez kobiety dla kobiet, również dla dzieci. W taką właśnie kulturę włącza Anusia troje swych wychowanków. Następnie za pośrednictwem wariatki Kani, niegdyś ladacznicy i gorszycielki, przez wszystkich odpychanej i pogardzanej, której Anusia udziela swojej opieki, wkracza w ich życie seksualność i śmierć. Wnioski. W Anusi, przypowieści inicjacyjnej, spełnia się potrójne wtajemniczenie zasugerowane przez Eliadego: wedle tego badacza, człowiek wstępuje w dorosłość za sprawą sacrum, Erosa i Tanatosa – z chwilą, kiedy pozna te trzy obszary, nie jest już dzieckiem.
    Introduction. In this article, the aim of the author is to analyze how Maria Konopnicka uses the motive of initiation in her early novella called Anusia, bearing a clear resemblance to the author’s past. Methods. Drawing from sources which could be associated with psychiatry, anthropology or feminist critique, by among others Bruno Bettelheim, Mary Douglas, Mircea Eliade, Sandra M. Gilbert, Susan Gubar, Nancy K. Miller or Krystyna Kłosińska, the author has created a background of perspectives which allow Konopnicka show the advantages of a suggestive, subtle and meaningful literary approach. Results. In nineteenth century literature we often meet a special class of women living in the backstage of the house, where life throbs more intensively than in the parlor, so frequently portrayed as stiff and soulless, a parlor which in the story by Konopnicka is significantly never mentioned. Instead we are invited into a small wardrobe, Anusia’s kingdom and center of the children’s world. Here, undisturbed, freely and wildly, blossoms a kind of culture that is partly oral and partly written, and may be easily described as semi-folk. That places Konopnicka in a rich context which the author Illustrates using examples of fairytales, prayers, legends, ballads, and religious songs, traditionally connected with female audience, and the art of interpretation cherished by them. The other crucial question in the children’s lives is their sudden encounter with a despised outcast and scandalizer, a mad woman known by the entire town and notorious for having formerly been a city harlot. Anusia, a respectable, modest old maid, pities her and nurses her when she falls sick, thereby exposing her pupils to the mystery of erotism and death. Conclusion. Konopnicka’s novella seems to be consciously shaped after Eliade’s scholarly work, where the initiation process is divided clearly into three parts: sacrum, death and sexuality.

    The existence of marginal regions is closely linked to the socio-spatial polarisation of our society. Although marginality and peripherality can be considered a multidimensional phenomenon, the literature as well as social discourses often address only some of its dimensions, in particular on the basis of objective approaches. Such a research is usually based on the quantification of a wide range of statistical indicators, whether of a social, environmental or economic nature. This study aims to capture another equally important dimension of this phenomenon, namely the perception of marginality and peripherality. Drawing on a series of interviews carried out with experts in the field of Irish rurality, this research points to the various perceptions of this phenomenon in rural Ireland. The results once again confirm the complexity of marginality and peripherality, and highlight many differences but also similarities that exist with regard to this phenomenon in the Irish rural context.

    This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

    All along the nineteenth century in France, the vagabond becomes a main social and philosophical issue, for he is hunt down by scientists – vagrancy is conceived as a mental illness – and by jurists – different laws are created to criminalize the act. By establishing a link between this sudden obsession and the concern expressed by thinkers (Tocqueville, Comte, Bourget) that the society is dangerously blowing apart in separate individuals, this paper aims to analyze the manifestation of this conflict between society and vagabond in literature, among others Barrès’ Les Déracinés and Gide’s Nourritures terrestres.

    Throughout history, vagrancy appears as one of the notions of the Human Condition. Its artistic and poetical representations are drawn from multiple sources and offer various models. The fantasy of vagrancy in French poetry in the second half of the Nineteenth Century is fashioned as much through the vagrant’s relationship with space as with Society. Its models spring from marginality and contestation. Spatial structure presents an opposition between « closed » and « open », « interior » and « exterior », and so forth... These separations fluctuate and interact mutually. The poet conjures, from any questing, marginal figure, his own image. The general tendency, from Hugo to Rimbaud, shows both a crushing of the poetical figure, transforming it into a magus or a prophet, and the proliferation of the accursed poet’s « negating anger ».

    The purpose of this article is to present current state and situation, which is in the east of Ukraine, as well as selected problems faced by the people of Donbass. In April 2014 years in the circuits of Donetsk and Lugansk, Ukraine began hybrid war. Kiev has introduced partial blockage of territories rebellion. Stopped working all the infrastructure necessary for life: shopping, hospitals, banks and transport, water supply, heating. Lock expanded areas poverty and hunger. Arose groups of people who are living only with the help of charity. Socially excluded. People who for various reasons are there, they are struggling for survival today. Their most important aim is to survive: getting food, shelter against accidental missile, fear for relatives. People suffer because they do not want to wander around refugee centers, they are worried that in a new place, they will not find work.
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie współczesnego stanu i sytuacji panującej na wschodzie Ukrainy, a także wybranych problemów, z którymi spotykają się ludzie z Donbasu. W kwietniu 2014 roku na terenie obwodów donieckiego i ługańskiego rozpoczęła się tzw. wojna hybrydowa: Kijów wprowadził częściową blokadę terytoriów rebelii, w wyniku czego przestała funkcjonować infrastruktura niezbędna do życia: handel, szpitale, banki, transport, wodociągi i ogrzewanie. Blokada poszerzyła obszary nędzy i głodu. Powstały grupy ludzi żyjących jedynie dzięki pomocy charytatywnej, wykluczonych społecznie. Ludzie, którzy z różnych przyczyn pozostali w swych domach, walczą dziś o przetrwanie. Ich głównym celem jest przeżycie: zdobycie żywności i ochrona przed bombami, czemu towarzyszy strach o najbliższych. Cierpią, gdyż nie chcą się tułać po ośrodkach dla uchodźców, obawiając się, że w nowym miejscu nie znajdą pracy.

    This article analyses the urban-centred riots of August 2011 in England from the point of view of consumerism and city spaces. Asking what was motivational behind these historic – if little studied – riots, the paper is divided into two sections. The first section examines consumerism as a key concept, developing C. E. Griffin’s work on youth cultures, to evidence a broader societal tension between a consumerist drive and material depravation among a depoliticised youth. A desire for goods that cannot be materialised is described as a phenomenon that is experienced spatially through urban areas in which the unattainable goods are contained. The second section considers David Harvey’s view that the city itself, as a socialised space, is depoliticised in failing to inspire and structure a coordinated political movement during the riots. Analysing theories of city space in relation to a consumerist drive the article proposes that, even while young looters were not necessarily united around a political ideal that then fostered corresponding action, their looting communicates a pre-established pattern of consumption worthy of critical study. Through the development of these overlapping themes, it is intended that the context of rioting is attended to within wider patterns of consumerism in the urban locale. Reading this historical episode in a context of a global health pandemic helps prompt future discussion about how digitalised spaces rather than high streets might (re)direct a consumerist drive.

    This study is devoted to socio-spatial polarisation with regard to the rural environment in Slovakia. In fact, ongoing polarisation processes do not take place only in the rural-urban continuum, but within every single category as well. This is evident especially in the rural environment, which has begun to change significantly in terms of its structure and to diversify to a greater extent. As a result, some parts of the countryside began to stagnate and decline gradually. These parts of the rural environment can thus be referred to as marginal, peripheral. With respect to the proclaimed diversity of the rural environment, this study focuses on selected rural structures, namely mountain areas, the borderland, and the area at the intersection of those two structures. Generally, these parts of the rural environment are often confronted with the phenomenon of marginality and peripherality, and because of the given local predisposition are even more vulnerable to its manifestations. Taking into account the dynamism and multidimensional character of this phenomenon, we can further assume that its manifestation changes in time and space. With the use of ANOVA, we examine a set of selected indicators of socio-spatial polarisation and verify whether and to what extent this dynamism depends on the character of diversified rural structures.

    This essay is a theologico-philosophical meditation on Bruno Schulz, focusing on his “love for the marginal”: a special attention paid to tandeta, in other words all things trashy, located on the eponymous edges of the world, far away from the center. Contrary to the assumed mode of interpretation, which reads Schulz’s fascination with the “dark forces of life” in terms of the depth subversive toward the surface, I propose a different scheme: an opposition of center and edges/margins, deriving from the Kabbalistic metaphysics of Isaac Luria, which constituted the primary matrix of the Hasidic Kabbalah, known to Schulz as the member of the pre-war Drohobycz Jewry. I then juxtapose Schulz’s intuition of a life thriving on the cosmological margins with Freud’s early theory of the drives, especially his concept of perversion as a “libido on the edge.” In both writers we find a similar echo of the spatial Kabbalistic imagining of the relation between the emptied center and the rich diaspora of life, dispersing and multiplying on the fringes of the “cosmic exile.”

    Class, ethnicity, and state in the making of marginality: Revisiting territories of urban relegationIn the postindustrial city, relegation takes the form of real or imaginary consignment to distinctive sociospatial formations variously and vaguely referred to as “inner cities,” “ghettos,” “enclaves,” “no-go areas,” “problem districts,” or simply “rough neighborhoods.” How are we characterize and differentiate these spaces, what determines their trajectory (birth, growth, decay and death), whence comes the intense stigma attached to them, and what constellations of class, ethnicity and state do they both materialize and signify? These are the questions I pursued in my book “Urban outcasts” (2008) through a methodical comparison of the trajectories of the black American ghetto and the European working-class peripheries in the era of neoliberal ascendancy. In this article, I revisit this cross-continental sociology of “advanced marginality” to tease out its broader lessons for our understanding of the tangled nexus of symbolic, social and physical space in the polarizing metropolis at century’s threshold in particular, and for bringing the core principles of Bourdieu’s sociology to bear on comparative urban studies in general. Klasa, etniczność i państwo w procesie tworzenia marginalności: Ponowne spojrzenie na obszary miejskiej relegacjiW mieście epoki postprzemysłowej relegacja przybiera formę realnego lub wyobrażonego przypisania do odrębnych formacji społeczno-przestrzennych, na różne sposoby i niezbyt precyzyjnie określanych jako „śródmieścia” (inner cities), „getta”, „enklawy”, „rejony niebezpieczne” (no-go areas), „dzielnice stwarzające problemy” (problem districts) czy po prostu „nieprzyjemne dzielnice” (rough neighborhoods). W jaki sposób opisujemy i odróżniamy owe przestrzenie, co określa ich trajektorię (powstanie, rozwój, upadek i zanik), skąd wzięło się silne symboliczne piętno nadane im na przełomie stuleci, a także jakiego rodzaju powiązania między klasowością, etnicznością i państwem znajdują w nich materialny oraz znaczeniowy wyraz? Kwestie te podejmuję w książce "Urban outcasts" [Miejscy wyrzutkowie] (2008), w której metodycznie porównuję trajektorie amerykańskiego czarnego getta i europejskich peryferii robotniczych w czasach panowania neoliberalizmu. W niniejszym artykule powracam do tej międzykontynentalnej socjologii „zaawansowanej marginalności”, mając na celu odsłonięcie płynących z niej wniosków dla lepszego zrozumienia skomplikowanych powiązań przestrzeni symbolicznej, społecznej i fizycznej w obrębie polaryzującej metropolii na przełomie stuleci oraz, ogólniej, zastosowanie podstawowych zasad socjologii Pierre’a Bourdieu do badań porównawczych nad obszarami miejskimi.

Wiedzie ona nieuchronnie do uświadomienia sobie, że dom, który opuścili już nie istnieje, a tam, gdzie wyjechali (w Niemczech) być może nigdy nie poczują się „u siebie”. To budzi u wielu emigrantów ogromy niepokój, któremu starają się zaradzić podejmując znaczące biograficznie decyzje. Zgromadzony materiał empiryczny pokazuje, że u wielu emigrantów brak poczucia wspólnoty doświadczeń w życiu codziennym z bliskimi w Polsce wywołuje potrzebę natychmiastowego powrotu na łono ojczyzny. Dla innych porównanie kraju pochodzenia i kraju emigracji utwierdza ich w przekonaniu o słuszności emigracyjnej drogi. W końcu, niektórym negatywny odbiór Polski z odmiennej kulturowo perspektywy daje możliwość usprawiedliwienia niechęci powrotu do ojczyzny.
    This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with �����������������������������������������������������young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common- sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career.

    This paper is an attempt to formulate theoretically what in practice I experienced as “parallaxes” in education. This practical experience stems from the ethnographic research I conducted during the past few years in places of urban poverty, focusing on the everyday educational realities of ghetto schools. In the shadows – beyond the margins – of the society educational issues appear in a radically different, refracted light. This refraction is capable of illuminating parallaxes education which hold us captive, and thus it is helpful for thinking differently about education. Through playing with four different parallaxes in education, my intention is to confront the readers of this paper with impossibilities and cracks in education similar to those I was confronted with in ghetto schools.
    Edukacja stała się jednym z pozornie wszechobecnych i wszechmocnych megaspektakli naszych czasów. Wiara w jej obietnice i potencjały nabrała w ostatnich dekadach niemal religijnego charakteru (ewangelia edukacyjna). Ze względu na przeceniany potencjał edukacji, problemy społeczne są coraz częściej rozwiązywane poprzez promowanie zwiększonej edukacji. Państwo nie tylko przenosi problemy społeczne do szkoły, ale także samo pedagoguje kwestie społeczne . Edukacja stała się lekarstwem niemal rozwiązaniem każdego problemu społecznego przy jednoczesnym wskazywaniu wszechobecnego kryzysu w edukacji. Reformy i innowacje rozwijają się wbrew (retorycznej) konstrukcji kryzysu edukacyjnego i porażki. To, co uderza mnie w tym scenariuszu, to fakt, że otacza on dwie asymetryczne pozycje w edukacji, jako części tego samego obrazu. Edukacja oznacza w nim chorobę i remedium, porażkę, a zarazem rozwiązanie. Twierdzę, że badanie takich ontologicznie performatywnych struktur w edukacji jest pomocne w kontestowaniu przyjętych za oczywiste założeń dotyczących edukacji.

    The article is focused on MUBIG, an experimental museum in a peripheral neigbourhood of Milan. The museum, a fluid, scattered, dynamic discourse – a process, more than a place – is born out of an urban regeneration project. The reflection attempts to articulate a number of key questions: how are the individual histories embodied by the museum? What points of fragility are envisaged in this regard and how are they addressed, in order to prevent tokenism and the rhetoric of participation perse? What is the role of the visual dimention and of contemporary art? Throughout the article, I argue that neighbourhood museums might be one of the many actors needed on the scene of decolonisation, by this term meaning a process of space-making around the commons based on representation and radical listening. The experience is analyses here through a double lens: while being a member of the collective who co-designed it, I also look at it from my academic position. This allows me to describe the process keeping different “points of distance,” therefore layering methodologies and viewpoints.

    Antropologia neoliberalizmu podzieliła się na dwa przeciwstawne obozy. Z jednej strony lokuje się hegemoniczny model ekonomiczny zakotwiczony w wariantach zasady rynkowej, z drugiej zaś buntownicze podejście stymulowane przez pochodne pojęcia urządzania. Oba zaciemniają to, co jest „neo” w neoliberalizmie: restrukturyzację państwa jako kluczowego sprawcy, ustanawiającego zasady i wytwarzającego podmiotowości oraz stosunki społeczne dostosowane do realizacji rynków. Nawiązując do dwóch dekad badań empirycznych nad miejską marginalnością w rozwiniętych społeczeństwach, proponuję drogę pośrednią między tymi dwoma podejściami. W tym ujęciu neoliberalizm to takie powiązanie państwa, rynku i obywatelstwa, które zaprzęga państwo do narzucania rynkowego piętna na obywatelstwo. Ukute przez Bourdieu pojęcie pola biurokratycznego oferuje potężne narzędzie do analizy reorganizacji państwa jako maszyny stratyfikacji i klasyfikacji kierującej odgórnie neoliberalną rewolucją, oraz pozwala na wysunięcie trzech tez: (1) neoliberalizm nie jest reżimem ekonomicznym, ale politycznym projektem formowania państwa, narzucającym dyscyplinarny „workfare”, „prisonfare” i motyw indywidualnej odpowiedzialności w służbie utowarowienia; (2) neoliberalizm pociąga za sobą prawicowe odchylenie przestrzeni biurokratycznych organów władzy, które definiują i dystrybuują dobra publiczne oraz powołuje do życia państwo-Centaura, które na szczycie struktury klasowej uprawia liberalizm, a na jej dole karzący paternalizm; (3) rozrost i gloryfikacja penitencjarnego skrzydła państwa jest integralnym składnikiem neoliberalnego Lewiatana, dlatego też policja, sądy, więzienia muszą zostać włączone w zakres politycznej antropologii neoliberalnego panowania.
    The anthropology of neoliberalism has become polarised between a hegemonic economic model anchored by variants of market rule and an insurgent approach fuelled by derivations of the Foucaultian notion of governmentality. Both conceptions obscure what is ‘neo’ about neoliberalism: the reengineering and redeployment of the state as the core agency that sets the rules and fabricates the subjectivities, social relations and collective representations suited to realising markets.Drawing on two decades of field-based inquiries into the structure, experience and political treatment of urban marginality in advanced society, I propose a via media between these two approaches that construes neoliberalism as an articulation of state, market and citizenship that harnesses the first to impose the stamp of these cond onto the third. Bourdieu’s concept of bureaucratic field offers a powerful tool for dissecting the revamping of the state as stratification and classification machine driving the neoliberal revolution from above and serves to put forth three theses: (1) neoliberalism is not an economic regime but a political project of state--crafting that puts disciplinary ‘workfare’, neutralising ‘prisonfare’ and the trope of individual responsibility at the service of commodification; (2) neoliberalism entails a rightward tilting of the space of bureaucratic agencies that define and distribute public goods and spawns a Centaur-state that practises liberalism at the top of the class structure and punitive paternalism at the bottom; (3) the growth and glorification of the penal wing of the state is an integral component of the neoliberal Leviathan, such that the police, courts and prison need to be brought into the political anthropology of neoliberal rule.
