The note about Paul’s hurry for the day of Pentecost in Acts 20, 16 arouses numerous doubts. Authors think that Luke hides the actual reason while he sailed past Ephesus, for in itself it is paradoxical; the calling of the presbyters at Miletus postponed the journey even more. Studying the redaction in which we find the above note, and then the tradition from which it has stemmed out, make us look at Luke as a reliable narrator of Paul’s itinerary in 20:1-38. The reason why Paul sailed past Ephesus seems to be in accordance with the historical realities.

Opis:
Our work focuses on the study of the electronic structure of undoped and K-doped ZnO using density functional theory as implemented in the Wien2k package. Generalized gradient approximation and GGA plus Tran-Blaha-modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) were used to calculate the exchange-correlation energy. From the electronic properties, ZnO has a direct band gap in (Γ-Γ) direction with a value of 0.76 eV within GGA and 2.63 eV within GGA + TB-mBJ. For the K-doped ZnO (12.5%) the gap was found to be 1.15 eV within GGA and 3.28 eV within GGA + TB-mBJ, we have observed that an emersion of a new narrow band exists in the valence band which is mainly caused by K 3p states with a little Zn 4s and Zn 3d effect.

Opis:
A Monte Carlo code is proposed for determination of mass attenuation coefficients of gamma rays for some polymer and plastic materials. It is based on simulation of interaction processes of gamma rays with the energy of 59.5, 80.9, 140.5, 279, 356.5, 511, 661.6, 1173.2, 1332.5 keV with matter. The method was tested by comparison of the simulation results with the literature values (ANSI/ANS-6.4.3 and GRIC toolkit). The compatible behaviour of mass attenuation coefficients versus incident photon energy for the investigated energy range approves the use of this code for the extended energy range and several materials. Also, the values of half-value layer were calculated for assessment of shielding effectiveness of these materials.

In this work we present the band gap engineering, epitaxial growth and optical characterization of CdSe/$Cd_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}Se$ and $Cd_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}Se$/$Cd_{0.85}Mg_{0.15}Se$ quantum wells with a thickness ranging from 1 to 15 nm. These structures exhibit strong near-band-gap photoluminescence from helium up to room temperature. The emission energy is tuned in the range from 1.74 to 2.1 eV at 7 K, depending on the thickness and well composition. The most intense photoluminescence (both at 7 and 300 K) was observed for 10 nm thick CdSe/$Cd_{0.9}Mg_{0.1}Se$ wells. Such a structure gives also a sharp emission line (FWHM = 20 meV) at low temperature. The presented quantum wells are well suited for being embedded in lattice matched ZnTe based microcavities.

We study the effects of exciton-longitudinal optical phonon interaction on the exciton binding energies in ZnS/$Mg_{x}Be_{y}Zn_{1-x-y}S$ single quantum wells. The heavy- and light-hole exciton binding energies increase to the exciton-logitudinal optical phonon interaction. The increase in the maximum heavy-hole (light-hole) exciton binding energy for x=0.74 is 68.3 meV (55.0 meV). In narrow ZnS/$Mg_{x}Be_{y}Zn_{1-x-y}S$ single quantum wells SQWs, the heavy- and light-hole exciton binding energies exceed the longitudinal optical phonon energy of ZnS when x ≥ 0.1.

Indium-doped ZnO thin films were deposited by sol-gel spin-coating method with various In content. The effects of In content on the structural and optical properties of the indium-doped ZnO thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The particle-like surface morphology and the crystallinity of the indium-doped ZnO thin films were affected by change in the In content, especially at the In content of 3 at.%. The values of direct band gap were decreased with increase in the In content. The width of localized states in the optical band gap of the indium-doped ZnO thin films were changed with In content and the Urbach energy $(E_{U})$ was changed inversely with optical band gap of the indium-doped ZnO thin films.

In this review paper recent advances in chalcogene mechanochemistry are described. Three selected areas are being covered, i.e. metallurgy, materials science, and medicine. In extractive metallurgy, the processing of copper arsenic mineral enargite ($Cu_3AsS_4$) with the aim of its dearsenification and subsequent preparation of a new anticancer drug ($Na_3AsS_4$) and of copper in nanocrystalline state ( ≈ 20 nm) illustrate the non-traditional prospect of ore treatment. In material science, the new nanocrystalline semiconductors were synthesized mechanochemically, e.g. selenides of zinc and lead (ZnSe, PbSe) and bismuth sulphide ($Bi_2S_3$). Metal and chalcogene were applied as reaction precursors. In some cases, the amino acids (cystine, cysteine) were applied as sulphur precursor, in order to provide reactive sites on synthesized solid (PbS) for bioconjugation and to prevent agglomeration. The concept of nanomilling is described as a way to prepare effective substances for cancer treatment in medicine. In vitro activity of realgar ($As_4S_4$) as an example is described. In all three areas the focus is aimed also on industrial applications where suitable large-scale mills are described. The described examples represent the contemporary aim of mechanochemists - to prepare substances with the desired properties in a reproducible way under easy-operating, environmentally friendly and essentially waste-free conditions.

CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals have been prepared by a two-step solid state mechanochemical synthesis. CdSe prepared from elements in the first step is mixed with ZnS synthesized from zinc acetate and sodium sulfide in the second step. The crystallite size of the new type CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals determined by X-ray diffraction Rietveld refined method was 35 nm and 10 nm for CdSe and ZnS, respectively. Energy dispersive/transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy methods show good crystallinity of the nanoparticles and scanning electron microscopy elemental mapping illustrate consistent distribution of Cd, Se, Zn and S elements in the bulk of samples. UV-VIS spectra show an onset at 320 nm with calculated bandgap 3.85 eV. This absorption arises from the vibration modes of Zn-S bonds. The nanocrystals show the blue shift from the bandgap of bulk ZnS (3.66 eV). The synthesized CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals have been tested for dissolution, cytotoxicity and L-cysteine conjugation. The dissolution of Cd was less than 0.05 μg $mL^{-1}$ (in comparison with 0.8 μg $mL^{-1}$ which was evidenced for CdSe alone). The very low cytotoxic activity for selected cancer cell lines has been evidenced. CdSe@ZnS nanocrystals coated with L-cysteine are water-soluble and have a great potential in biomedical engineering as fluorescent labels.

The results of experimental investigation of structural and physical properties of ZnO and ZnMnO films are presented in this work. The films of ZnO and $Zn_{1-x}Mn_{x}O$ of different thickness were obtained on $Al_{2}O_{3}$, glass, and KCl substrates in vacuum of 1 × $10^{-5}$ Torr by the pulsed laser deposition method. The samples were obtained under the substrate temperature 300-473 K. A thickness of films was in the range of 0.5-1 μm depending on the number of laser pulses. The structure of target bulk materials was investigated by X-ray diffraction method. A structure of laser deposited films was investigated by the transmission high-energy electron diffraction method. Electric resistivity was measured in the temperature range 77-450 K. The presence of two activation energies in the temperature range 300-330 K and 330-450 K is followed from the analysis of the films electrical resistivity. These activation energies correspond to two deep donor's energy levels. The shallow donor's level is connected with manganese presence. Optical transmission of ZnO and ZnMnO films deposited at various temperatures were investigated.

Opis:
The electronic structure of ferromagnetic (Zn,Co)O films was investigated by resonant photoemission across the Co 3p → Co 3d photoionization threshold, e.g. using photon energy between 50 eV and 66 eV. The films were grown by atomic layer deposition at temperature between 160C and 300C and they differed in distribution and content of cobalt. The maximum of the Fano resonance was observed at photon energy 63 eV, whereas the minimum at 58 eV. The difference between energy distribution curves taken at 63 eV and the one taken at 58 eV was calculated for a series of samples. It shows that the Co 3d contribution to the valence band electronic structure of ferromagnetic (Zn,Co)O films differs significantly from that of the films which show the paramagnetic response.

The aims of this work are synthesis of ZnO nanopowders and producing nanocomposites by mixing with carbon nanotubes. ZnO nanopowders have been synthesized by chemical precipitation route. The linear attenuation coefficients of water and some solid phantom materials, namely of solid water RMI-457, of plastic water, of RW3 solid water, and of Perspex were determined by Monte Carlo calculations, for gamma-ray photons with energies of 59.5, 80.9, 140.5, 356.5, 661.6, 1173.2, and 1332.5 keV. The calculated values were compared with the experimental results presented by other researchers and with theoretical values obtained using the XCOM database. Good agreement was observed between the calculations, the experimental, and the theoretical values. The results indicate that the process in Monte Carlo code can be followed to determine the equivalency of other materials at several energies. Three shielding factors such as half-value layer, tenth-value layer, and mean free path were calculated at all considered gamma-ray energies.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to obtain the dynamic model of an electrical powered wheelchair and to estimate the state variables of right and left DC motor currents with the designed observer. First, the dynamic equations are written and then discrete-time state space model of the electrical powered wheelchair is directly obtained from this dynamic equations. Discrete time state space model of the electrical powered wheelchair is verified with the transfer function obtained using the dynamic equations. In addition, the accuracy of the estimated left and right DC motor current values are validated in the simulation results.

The main aims of this work were to produce and examine the characteristics of nanostructured ZnO in dye-sensitized solar cells. Parameters which are affected by the efficiency such as precursor materials, morphology were investigated. The Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate transformation from bulk material to solution. General morphologies and detailed structural characterizations were obtained using field emission scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffractometer has been used to determine preferred crystal orientation and particle size of the ZnO nanostructures.

Pure ZnO nanopowders were synthesized by the sol-gel method, which has several advantages, among which we include, achieving low temperature deposition and synthesis of new hybrid organo-mineral materials. The effect of the elaboration conditions (the elaboration concentrations ratio of precursors $(C_{Z}//C_{A})$, the gelling temperature $(T_g)$ and the gelling time $(t_g)$) on the structural, morphological and luminescence properties of ZnO nanopowders has been investigated. The chemical composition of the powders, determined by FTIR spectroscopy, indicate the exclusive presence of Zn-O bonds, as it is shown by the XRD spectra. The XRD results indicate also that the synthesized ZnO powder is a solid solution, crystallizing in pure würtzite structure with a minimum grain size of about 23 nm for the powders prepared using: $C_{Z}//C_{A}$=0.06%, $T_g$=130°C and $T_g$=4 h. The morphological aspect, given by the SEM images, revealed that the powders are made of sheets, consisting of small particles agglomerated together. The photoluminescence study of the ZnO powders shows spectra with luminescence peaks from green to ultraviolet light, the more intensive emission is connected to the peaks of the blue luminescence.
