Opis:
Sharply dressed, smooth, and sporty—these are probably among the first attributes associated with the Russian president Vladimir Putin. This image is promoted by television which still remains a powerful medium in Russia. While the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014 initially led to an increase in the popularity of Putin, his approval rating has significantly fallen since the signing of pension reforms in autumn 2018. This could explain why in September 2018 a new talk show called Moskva.Kreml’.Putin, which offers a synopsis of Putin’s working week, began its broadcast. By analyzing the „new“ image of Putin portrayed in this show and comparing it with his visual presentation in the news program Vremia and the annual talk Priamaia Linia s Vladimirom Putinym, the following paper examines the visual portrayal of Putin transmitted on television. By focusing on the visual, the analysis reveals that the president’s image, and the attributes assigned to him, are established and communicated mostly via the content and arrangement of (moving) pictures. Thus, the study suggests that visual communication on television significantly shapes and influences the perception of the Russian president. This work therefore contributes to a better understanding of television in general and of mass media communication in Russia in particular.

Artists worldwide use various means and materials to realize their visual expressions. In the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Benin, different types of materials can be seen used by students and lecturers alike. Some of these materials are fiberglass, bronze, metals, stone, clay and wood. Of all these materials, wood have come up as one of the most outstanding, dependable and striking. Three very evocative wood sculptures attracting attention and critical review are Life in Phases, Shame and Life is a Scuffle. These three ever powering and fascinating sculptures continue to speak volumes of the shamelessness among our greedy political office holders, the struggle to break even in our ever demanding and corrupt society. Is there any solution in sight for mankind’s daunting problems? This and more questions are what this paper seeks to answer and critically establish.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to compare the formal organization of a visual message with the rhetorical devices used in a verbal message. This analysis is carried out based on the example of the sculpture Dual by Zbigniew Władyka. The creativity found in the rhetorical devices used in the sculpture Dual to trigger and amplify feelings proves that they can be employed even in this form of artistic expression. Creativity in the analysed sculpture is represented by German reunification, reflected in the form of the transformation of two characters into one. The sculpture is meant to inspire, to be an object (res) directing the viewer toward personal reflection, and invoking projections of fear and doubt, but also of confidence and courage. Confidence and courage are represented by a strong figure with a head, firmly standing on its feet. Fear and doubt are represented by a weak figure, carried by the first one. The centripetal composition used in the sculpture suggests merger rather than destruction. The sensory perception of the viewer is controlled by directional tensions, which lead the viewer’s sight along designated linear directions. As described earlier by Witkiewicz, directional tensions and motionless substance correspond to a rhetorical enlarging and diminishing. By interacting with the sculpture, you can experience these devices. Not only visualization is at work here, as in verbal communication, but also physical experience. The presented analysis shows that a sculptural work of art can be analysed in a similar way to verbal communication. Of course, not all verbal devices have their counterparts in visual communication, but the basic content and emotions can be expressed regardless of the code.

Opis:
Virginia Woolf describes her artistic goal in The Waves as an attempt to create “an abstract mystical eyeless book.” Yet, in creating her eyeless book, one that eschews a single narrative perspective, Woolf amasses abundant visual details. For each of her six characters, visual images mark significant moments of being. In fact, Woolf emphasizes the characters’ capacity for sight as a vulnerability that allows them to be violated and wounded over and over. This article analyzes connections between visual imagery and themes of violence in the novel to demonstrate how they cohere into an extended metaphor for the ways in which acts of looking can elicit powerful emotions that threaten to fragment individual identity in painful ways. While Woolf’s novel has received critical commentary that focuses on the role of vision in the narrative and critics have also noted how violence in the text supports other themes, the explicit relationship between sight and violence has not yet been fully explored. A close examination of the visual imagery in key scenes of the novel demonstrates how Woolf engages the reader to participate in the characters’ deepening sense of fragmentation as they are repeatedly assaulted by experience, as the eyes themselves become symbols of the twin dynamics of desire and destruction.

This article presents the findings of an innovative qualitative study involving one CLIL (content and language integrated learning) student and one student in a parallel, non-CLIL strand at high school level in Sweden. The aim of the study was to investigate differences in students’ beliefs about language. The success of second (L2) and foreign language (FL) learning depends to a large degree on individual differences (Dörnyei, 2005; Skehan, 1991). Differences are normally elicited through questionnaires, interviews, and/or observations. In the present study, the aim was to get direct access to the informants’ own perspectives, without the content being too directed through predetermined questions. In this study, students were asked to take photos illustrating how they view (a) their L1 (Swedish), and (b) the FL/L2 English. Then the photos were thematically organized by the researcher. Subsequently, the thematic organization and the photos themselves were discussed with each of the informants during an inter iew. The informants were asked to elaborate on each theme and/or picture as to why and how it illustrates the respective language for them. The findings reveal substantial differences between the two informants in their views on their L1 and FL/L2, with the CLIL student highlighting communication rather than seeing the two languages as separate systems, and the non-CLIL student seeing language rather the other way around.

The article shows how the home(less) do not perceive themselves as entirely homeless as actually they have home which they can arrange at any given moment. The text presents the world of the homeless as the world of the “homeful” people; it attempts to reconstruct the fragments of their everyday life and rituals that they create within the space arranged into their “homefullness”. Thanks to this article, the Reader may, experience the life of homeless people from another perspective. They can see that every homeless person has their own space and defined limits. The article present two different perspectives of homelessness; one belonging to the homeless people and the other to the society. The world that is unreal to one person can be a real home to another.

Opis:
This paper focuses on a contemporary phenomenon of visual mass culture consisting of signs and pictures expressing technical information and marketing communications. Such signs and pictures shape the environment of the modern man. One can notice them on highways, streets, in the city space, malls, stores, bars, airports and train stations. These signs and pictures are also mass produced items and can be considered as architecture represented by designs of easily recognizable buildings like McDonald's bars and IKEA department stores. Signs and pictures which are a subject matter of this paper have a technical and at the same time artistic character. This text is an attempt to see them in the context of the theory of culture by Ernst Cassirer and his concept of animal symbolicum.

This paper aims to address and explore the problem of rendering Alasdair Gray’s prose in Polish, by focusing on his works’ extra-narrative elements. It seeks to identify the difficulties and limitations in translating an author of this kind – a writer, but also, and perhaps primarily, an artist, whose texts function as book-objects, relying heavily on artwork as well as typographical experimentation. The analysis, centred on Gray’s Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things, leads to a discussion of the broader question of translating these books in which the actual text is only part of the story.

Opis:
The polish conception of aesthetic education began in the 1960s. The grounds of this theory were formulated by Bogdan Suchodolski, who recognised it as an integral part of general education. According to this theory, aesthetic education encompasses two areas: education for art, i.e. education for aesthetic sensibility and aesthetic culture, and education through art, i.e. development of full personality, also in the intellectual, moral, social, educational, imaginative and creative areas. Essential for the Polish theory of aesthetic education are the proposals and conclusions presented by Irena Wojnar, particularly her recognition of education through art as a creating an “open mind” attitude. A distinctive feature of Irena Wojnar’s pedagogical reflection on art is its interdisciplinary nature, which takes into account not only the educational one, but also the aesthetic, psychological and social perspective on the educational values and functions of art. The conceptions of visual art and musical education developed within the “general” theory of aesthetic education have been used in designing the music and visual arts curricula. The contemporary Polish theory of aesthetic education joined the stream of new educational thinking, in the perspective of cultural pluralism and new ethical and social obligations to individuals and to the world. The so perceived aesthetic education, recognised by UNESCO as an important part of education for culture, including the so-called human culture, deserves both the attention and interest of theorists as well as innovative practical solutions.

W drugiej zaś opisano indywidualny przypadek przebiegu edukacji osoby z postępującą słabowzrocznością na tle przemian polityczno-społecznych, jakie miały miejsce w Polsce w ostatnich czterech dekadach.
The text consists of two parts: the first part contains a theoretical analysis of the impact that congenital progressive condition has on the life of an individual, with particular emphasis on such areas as education and social functioning; in the second part a case study is presented illustrating the education process of an individual with progressing low vision, seen against the background of political and social changes which occurred in Poland over the last forty years.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the ontological status of Jerzy Grzegorzewski’s scenography objects, as objets trouvés that are tools in the director’s hands. The analysis follows the change that takes place when the objects become part of visual archives, outside the context of a performance. The discussed archives, Inwentaryzacja and Archiwum JG, remove the objects’ materiality, instead offering a photographic representation. In the first case, the objects are photographed separately and tagged. In the other, hipertextual archive, the scenography objects become elements of a dynamic system of references, in which photography coexists with a description and historians’ narrative. The archives, therefore, preserve the traces of the theatre, but at the same time they change the meaning of those traces, transforming elements of what was once whole (theatrical scenography) into autonomous works of art.

Opis:
Purpose of research. The purpose of the study is the analysis of the creation and functioning of art as a continuing process, a quality that is intrinsic to it. Art can be perceived visually as well as with other senses both in the process and through the material outcome. An attempt at its reinterpretation, illustrated with selected works of contemporary Polish and foreign artists, will be presented. Methodology. The dissonance between modern and traditional art lies, among other things, in the variety of, both, the techniques applied and the ways of conveying the message of the work. Art provides the artist with room for freedom which manifests itself in a free choice of artistic means: Teresa Murak celebrates the miracle of living by using natural materials; for Anna Goebel every material she uses tells its own unique story and so the artist considers it to be a medium of creating her own reality, whereas Yves Klein used to say that his paintings were only the ashes of his art, as what is most important is the experience and creation process, including the passage of time. Such a belief comes from the fact that everything art relates to, each creation as well as reception process – all this takes place in a context. Results. Today every sign of artistic activity - from painting, in the traditional sense of the concept, to the "action", experimental imprints of the human body, objects, plants, ephemeral art and spatial forms as environments, installation – can be considered a work of art. Art in process expresses not so much the temporary nature of the artwork formation, , as the necessity - essential for its existence - of being in a state of permanent execution by the author. Conclusions. In contemporary art, it is possible observe a re-evaluation of the stages that influence the creation of the artwork. Examples of art in the text show a different approach to the art in the process and the form and manner of use of the medium. They prove the lack of discrepancies between essence and existence of human and matter that takes on the form of the individual personality.
Metoda. Wnioski. W sztuce współczesnej następuje przewartościowanie etapów wpływających na tworzenie działa. Przywołane w tekście przykłady ukazują odmienne podejście do sztuki w procesie oraz do formy i sposobu użycia medium. Dowodzą braku rozbieżności pomiędzy istotą i egzystencją człowieka, a materią, która przybiera formę osobowości jednostki.
