Already at the preliminary stage of the analysis the convergence of the ethical positions of the M. Lipman’s “Philosophy for Children” educational program and the views presented by Leszek Kołakowski in the essay “Ethics without Codex” is visible. The common, dominant feature of both of them is the rejection in the moral conduct of an attitude characterised by the desire to have a moral code, whereas they justify their anti-code stance in mostly the same way. The author briefly sketches these arguments and present the requirements that a moral subject who does not follow the code must fulfil. Finally, the author of the article indicates the character of moral education postulated by both authors considered here.

The paper shows some philosophical and practical problems of moral education such as the gap between moral knowledge and moral action. It emphasizes the role of emotional dispositions and human character in building moral identity. And it articulates the criticism of Kohlbergian conception as an insufficient approach to moral education. Instead, a theory of moral deep self is proposed as a better account of the acquisition of moral guiding motivation.

This thesis contains an analysis of public discourse in Poland concerning the relationship between the rights of people who took the punishment prescribed sentence for sexual offenses and activities of the state which, through the legal system and legislation seeking to ensure public security by isolating these people from society. The theoretical frame of analysis is the concept of and thus influences the perception of safety. The empirical analysis applies, held in 2014, public debate on the threat that was carrying the release from prison of Mariusz Trynkiewicz underlying concept of work is the assumption that moral panic, with some reservations, it should be taken as an indication of public interest in a particular issue of public safety. Publicizing it through the mass media “legitimize” it as a serious social problem in the area of security, which requires rapid legal and institutional solutions. As an analytical scheme used in the text of a hybrid model analyzes of moral panic, which integrates the previous sequential approach and attributive moral panic, often applied in studies of the relationship between the state and other entities of security. This concept has so far rarely been used in research on public security. The basic thesis of the work is the belief that moral panic intensifies the threat rated as “a state of obsessions”.

This paper focuses on comparing the way Kant is structuring constitutive elements of moral decision-making, such as will, reason, or moral autonomy to the way Confucius is structuring the relationship between elements such as duty, commands of Tian, or social relations.

This article contains a brief analysis of John Locke’s epistemological views on the moral education of children. Locke believed that, in order to develop, man must be able to think for himself. As regards teaching, Locke advocated shaping a research instinct and independent thinking in children, combining language acquisition with learning about things, shaping intellectual abilities, dispositions and habits that enable further education and acquiring a profession. In the sphere of moral education he recommended developing moral concepts in children using the knowledge about the development of their awareness and based on real examples, stimulating their perceptiveness and cognitive activity in terms of proper conduct.

This article wants to show how it influences pedagogues’ judgement when models of governance are implemented in residences where children and young people are placed. Foucault’s concept of gov-ernmentality is used (Foucault, 1988) and explains how these models of governance result in peda-gogues altering their conception of what a good pedagogue is and what they do. The article then argues for the existence of a correlation between implementation of models of governance and an influence on pedagogues’ judgement.

This paper explores the notion of compassion and points to some intricacies inherent in it, in particular the paradox of egocentrism. Most ambiguous is its ontological status: is it an emotion, a virtue, a moral commitment, or a neurological reflex? Each category entails different implications for the process of educating compassionate beings. The conclusion is that genuine compassion is, from the very beginning, not just mere feeling, it is based on the recognition of rights of others. A person in need is much more than the object of our noble compassionate feelings and caring help, she is the subject of rights.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the changes in the conditions of academic freedom that occurred over the last several decades and to point out the possible ramifications of those changes. Firstly, the author begins by depicting the origins and the meaning of the neohumanistic modern idea of academic freedom and with outlining some of its paradoxes and limitations. Secondly, the classical neohumanistic concept of academic freedom is juxtaposed with new premises of economic neoliberalism, as diagnosed by Michel Foucault. Also the consequences of economic legitimisation of political order for academic freedom are drawn. Ultimately, the author concentrates on the results of economic limitations of freedom for free thinking and its relationship with human moral judgements.

It has been proved in the article that Mikołaj Rej’s views concerning the upbringing of children and youth are based on ancient philosophy, primarily on Stoicism. Mikołaj Rej’s Good Man is a counterpart of a Stoic wise man, whose life goal is to achieve emotionlessness and virtue. All the methods and ideas of upbringing described by Rej are subject to this very goal, which leads to the formation of a virtuous and rational man.

The following paper will examine how (male) speakers in William Wordsworth’s “The Baker’s Cart” and “Incipient Madness,” which eventually became reworked into “The Ruined Cottage,” narrate the histories of traumatised women. It will be argued that by distorting the women’s accounts of suffering into a didactic lesson for themselves, the poems’ speakers embody the tension present in the chief psychiatric treatment of the Romantic period, moral therapy, which strove to humanise and give voice to afflicted subjects, at the same time trying to contain and eventually correct their “otherness.”

The aim of the article Outline and Consequences of Theodicy of John Paul II is to present the main ideas of the Polish pope on suffering (the moral evil is not analyzed). In Crossing the Threshold of Hope he accuses theodicy of judging God himself, of being a kind of Pilate. His main document on the suffering Salvifici doloris brings us a variety of answers, including contradictory ones. For on the one hand the pope declares suffering to be a mystery, but on the other hand he gives quite clear, ‘not mysterious' solutions of suffering (a punishment, a trial, an occasion to do good, suffering for the salvation of others). It is surprising to realize that on other occasions he decisively abolishes the Old Testament's conviction by saying that suffering cannot be called a punishment. The main idea of Salvifici doloris is, however, his view that human suffering can have a redemptive value. The article goes in more detail about the consequences of this view.

The author of this paper draws our attention to the process of upbringing as understood by Heliodor Muszyński, a follower of socialist pedagogy. The author enumerates Muszyński’s aims and tasks of upbringing, focusing on the social roles identified by him, which are acquired by children as a result of their interaction with educators. This paper also outlines the issues of moral upbringing and presents the aspects of family upbringing.

The aim of the article is to attempt to present the role of a teacher in the process of moral education in the opinion of the authors publishing in the teachers’ journal “Pedagogical Review” based on the analysis of its issues from the years 1918–1939. Moral education in the interwar period was a subject of interest in pedagogical circles both in Poland and abroad. This was related to the popularity of the slogans of the New Education as well as the moral revival sought after the First World War. The authors publishing in the “Pedagogical Review” believed that, next to the parents, it is the teachers who should play the most important role in the process of moral education of children. Their personal example, the use of a wide range of educational methods and influence in various educational areas were the most important factors shaping the educational environment for the moral education of the young generation of Poles.
