The subject matter and purpose of the article is a depiction of the pedagogical concepts of Posidonius of Apamea, an eminent stoic philosopher and scholar. As it is clear from the surviving testimonials of Seneca and Galen, Posidonius dealt in his ethical writings to a large extent with issues of moral education. In writing On virtues Posidonius undertook – in opposition to Chrysippus – the question of the origin of ethical defects (moral evil), making insightful remarks about the nature of children and animals based on empirical observations. Posidonius believed that moral evil is innate to human nature. And in writing On emotions in reference to Plato (Politeia, Timaeus and Nomoi dialogues), Posidonius described the typology of human nature, depending on the type of morphology of the body and the dominant mental element as well as related types of effective educational methods.

Linguistic evidence is adduced indicating that (as non-linguistic evidence long known also suggests) the origin of Anglo-Frisian goes back to a period of common development in SE Anglo-Saxon England around 475–525. The linguistic reason to think so is that almost every characteristic innovation of Anglo-Frisian has a plausible motivation in terms of infl uences from Brittonic. It seems that the later Frisians originated as Anglo-Saxons, occupying territory between Kentish and Pre-Mercian, who left England and went back to the continent, of course to the coast, around 540. The conclusion is that Frisian is similar to English because Frisian is descended from English.

Opis:
Background. Many studies have assessed the protective factors and risk factors of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Considering the uncertainty about the effects of reproductive factors on bone density and the scarcity of information about postmenopausal women in Iran, the present study was conducted. Objectives. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between reproductive factors and bone density in postmenopausal women. Material and methods. In this cross-sectional study, 600 postmenopausal women without any known condition affecting bone mineral density were selected through convenience sampling from among the women referred to the densitometry center of Golestan Hospital in Ahwaz, Iran. The data were collected through questionnaires on demographics and reproduction. Bone mineral density was measured by the DEXA method using a Hologic machine in the L1–L4 region and the femoral neck. The demographic and reproductive variables were compared in 3 groups (osteoporosis, osteopenia and normal BMD). Results. The frequencies of osteoporosis and osteopenia were 15.16% and 57.33%, respectively. All reproductive factors were significantly different in the 3 groups. Multinomial logistic regression revealed later menarche to be a significant risk factor for osteopenia (OR = 4.36, CI = 3.38–5.63, p = 0.001) and osteoporosis (OR = 2.63, CI = 2.00–3.46, p = 0.001). A higher number of parity and longer breastfeeding were also revealed to be other risk factors; older age at first pregnancy is a protective factor. A higher BMI was found to be a protective factor only for osteoporosis. Conclusions. Our results suggest that later menarche, multiparity and longer breastfeeding act as risk factors, while higher BMI and older age at first pregnancy act as protective factors for bone density disorders in postmenopausal women.

In the history of Sweden the years 1611–1718 are the so-called great power era (Swedish: stormaktstiden), the period of geographic and economic expansion, as well as the formation of a romantic image of own nation, state and language. In this age, the foundations of today’s Old Norse studies were shaped, and the interest in the language and history of the language took peculiar forms in nationalist glottogony, as in Olof von Rudbeck, the author of a popular work Atland eller Manheim, in which he pointed out that the Swedish language is in fact the language that Adam used in Eden. Strong nationalist tendencies and a growing interest in the native language were accompanied by the unusual situation of the publishing market in the history of the Swedish language, as this was the only time when native texts, not translations definitively prevailed.

The subject of the article is reconstruction of assumptions and postulates of Novalis’s education program of the human race aimed at indication of the distinctive features of early Romantic historiosophy as its dependence on Enlightenment thought. Examination of both these aspects in their interpenetration allows revealing the inner contradictions of Novalis’s project determining its utopian character, which manifests itself in the vision of the Golden Age as an expression of the Romantic “new mythology”.

The text is a discussion of the UMCS publicationPolskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki[Polishness and Europeanism in Joseph Conrad's vision of history, politics and ethics] edited by Wieslaw Krajka. This is the second volume in the series Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat [Joseph Conrad and Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the world], is part of the research activities carried out by the Conrad Research Department at the UMCS. The monograph, like its predecessor, is a selection of texts previously published in English in the 22 volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. The review highlights the qualities of the publication, which presents works by leading Polish and foreign Conrad experts. In addition to popularizing the author, it also is an attempt to recover Conrad, who is almost absent in the Polish education.
Tekst jest omówieniem publikacji Wydawnictwa UMCS Polskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki pod redakcją Wiesława Krajki. Jest to drugi tom serii Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat, stanowi część działań naukowych prowadzonych przez Zakład Badań Conradoznawczych UMCS. Monografia, podobnie jak poprzedniczka, jest wyborem tekstów opublikowanych wcześniej w języku angielskim w 22 tomach serii Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. Recenzja zwraca uwagę na walory tego wydawnictwa, które zawiera badania czołowych polskich i zagranicznych conradystów. Prócz tego pełni funkcję popularyzatorską, jest swoistym odzyskiwaniem Conrada, autora niemal nieobecnego w polskiej edukacji.

In the article I discuss the influence of Pyotr Chaadayev’s thoughts contained in the first Philosophical Letter on Alexander Herzen’s concept. Chaadayev was openly intriguing, as despite general societal silence he spoke out against the Russian state oppressing an individual. I pay attention to the fact that Herzen’s attempt to defend an individual appropriated by abstraction (the state, God, ideology, progress) stems from the sources of Chaadayev’s concepts. Herzen revalues Chaadayev’s idea of Russia free from the burden of history, shifting the focus from historiography to philosophical anthropology. Each individual becomes part of it, as originally we are all deprived of history, its burden, every man thrown into the world is not ready, undefined, the past does not exist for him, just as the presence exists and the future opens potentially with multiple variants.

Historical perspective of property ownership, types of property, lost of property, right to property in Nigeria under law and capitalism, the right to property under biblical laws and recommendations are the core areas addressed by this paper. This research made used of historical method and recommends that the poor should be protected in Nigeria especially by not making them property of the rich ones.

Before the Partitions, Poland, beside Russia, was the largest, territorially compact European state. As a result of the Partitions of Poland, which were carried out in 1772, 1793 and 1795, Polish territory was divided and annexed by the three partitioning powers: Russia, Germany and Prussia. In an attempt to resist aggressive Germanization by the invader, Poles employed, among others, the methods of “organic work” and “work at the grass roots” (a programme, launched by the Polish positivists, of economic and cultural development through spreading literacy and popularizing science among the masses). It was on Polish territories under Prussian occupation that the theoretical and practical foundations of farm accounting were developed (Bernacki 2007b, p. 116-117). The main objectives of this paper are: to place the work and theory of Juliusz Au within the social and political context of the Prussian partition; to present a theory of agricultural accounting developed by J. Au; to evaluate J. Au’s theory from present-day perspective. J. Au is the author of a comprehensive, universal theory of accounting encompassing its three cognitive levels (aspects): (1) general level, covering the concept, objectives and method of accounting; (2) procedural level, comprising principles of assets measurement, choice of accounting period and production cost calculation; (3) supporting level, comprising organization of accounting, rules for statistical data collection and audit procedures.

Karl-Olov Arnstberg in the text Swedish Patriotism discusses the issue of identity and national consciousness in Sweden. The starting point for his reflections is the interview he had the opportunity to conduct with a doctor from Sri Lanka. He approached him as if he was a Swede, they both had a similar worldview, but his approach changed when the subject of conversation became the history of Sri Lanka. Arnstberg felt as if his interlocutor was so rooted in the past that the past, not the present created who he is now. The author of the text notices a parallel linking this situation with how the national consciousness of the Swedes was described at the beginning of the previous century by Selma Lagerlöf and Verner von Heidenstam. However, he notices certain regularity that “when the history of Sweden is written in a scientific and objective way, with a keen pursuit of truth, it is not only the history of Sweden that loses its social grounding, but it is also much harder to build a national identity on it”. What affects most the nation are fantastic heroes and fantastic events. Arnstberg emphasizes that he does not need his country’s history to build his identity. He refers to Peter Englund, a member of the Swedish Academy, who on the one hand wrote that ignorance of history may cause a lack of sense and identity, and on the other hand, he believed that historical events and heroes should not be used as justification for nationalism. His interpretation of Englund’s words includes two approaches to history. The first – modernist, which does not look at history in the identity context, and the second – nationalist, according to which knowledge of history is important for a sense of community with the rest of the nation. Further, the author of the text analyzes the concept of Swedishness, referring to the articles of other researchers. The examples he gives more blur the term than allow us to understand what it really means. He demonstrates, on the basis of nationalism, the paradoxes of Swedishness and even undermines its existence.

When considering the causes of secularization in the Western societies, one must mention sociological and political consequences of both the World War II and Holocaust. Extermination of the Jewish nation prompted raising the question of “why did God allow Auschwitz?” Many Jewish and Christian theologians attempted to explain the moral collapse in the time of Holocaust. Part of them was related to the so-called Death of God theology, the theological movement which interpreted a radical secularization of the Western culture in many ways. The article discusses theological reflections of the Christian theologian Paul van Buren and the Jewish thinker Richard L. Rubenstein. They are considered to belong to the movement of the Death of God theology, though in both cases such classification is not justified. Both interpret Holocaust in the perspective of God’s silence, and both search for new notions and meanings for God in the secular world after Auschwitz.

Authority and function of the head of guild and custom communicative in the light of Cracow’s brewers protocols (from the years 1729-1760) This article presents the concept of authority exploited in historical studies of language. It shows a clash between the authority of the head of a corporation and the language custom of a speech community fixed in guild protocols. The influence of the older guild is reflected in the choice of the writer, in giving orders to write down contents of extreme relevance as well as in the theme of unusual records. The stylistic, linguistic and genre shape of records depend on the writer, who adapts it to the existing patterns of text. The relationship between the writer and the head of a guild sometimes manifests itself in the records of panegyric character. The situation changes when former writers become the head of guild, which will be discussed in the next publication.
