Analysis of the causes of homelessness and attempts to change their situation among homeless people with higher education are the purpose of the presented article. Losing home among people with higher education is not a common topic of research and analysis. In society, a homeless person is associated rather with an uneducated person. In order to analyze the reasons, the general situation and actions taken to overcome homelessness, five individual in-depth interviews with homeless men from the Mazovia region were carried out. All respondents completed university studies. Among the respondents, the main causes of homelessness are addictions and conflicts in marriage. The respondents admit that it is difficult for them to improve their situation, especially in terms of raising professional qualifications. They have education, so they mostly wonder what other actions they could take. Completed studies show that leaving homelessness, even with a university degree, is not easy. There is no effective system of help for homeless people in this group of people – they are offered jobs or courses and training definitely not corresponding to their possibilities and education.

Organizations certifying professions in the area of accounting and finance play an essential role in shaping and strengthening the professional status of its practitioners. Universities in Poland recognized the importance of international qualifications and established active cooperation with the Asociation of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) to accredit accounting and finance programs. The presented study aims to answer whether ACCA accreditation affects the professional development of accounting and finance specialists in Poland. Its role was also to identify factors that contribute to increasing the professional development of accounting and finance specialists in connection with the accreditation of study programs. To achieve these goals a questionnaire survey was conducted among students from three selected accredited universities in Poland. The analysis of the results obtained was carried out by the use of descriptive statistics and multiple regression. According to students' opinions, the employers' interest in graduates of accredited courses positively influences their career development. In addition to the interest of employers' mentioned above, surveyed women also indicated a higher quality of education in accredited courses, while men stressed the greater prestige of studies as a factor contributing to the development of their professional career. The results of this study are a valuable contribution to the discussion on professional development as well as the impact of accreditation institutions on the training of accounting and finance specialists.

Celem artykułu jest ocena efektywności działalności dydaktycznej polskiego szkolnictwa wyższego w roku akademickim 2014/15 w kontekście zmian demograficznych i umiędzynarodowienia szkolnictwa wyższego. Dokonano tego za pomocą modeli SBM-Min i SBM-Max nieparametrycznej metody DEA, na podstawie danych GUS. W zależności od wybranego modelu za nakłady uczelni przyjęto wartość przychodów z działalności dydaktycznej lub liczbę nauczycieli akademickich, a za efekty — liczbę studentów lub absolwentów. Wyniki wskazują, że większość badanych jednostek częściej była efektywna w modelu SBM-Max niż SBM-Min. Publiczne szkoły wyższe są w dość znacznym stopniu efektywne i spójne względem siebie.
The aim of this article is to assess the effectiveness of Polish higher education didactic activity in the academic year 2014/15 in the context of demographic changes and internationalisation of higher education. The research was conducted using the SBM-Min and SBM-Max models of non-parametric DEA method, based on the CSO data. Depending on the chosen model the value of revenues from educational activities or the number of teachers was assumed as the expenditure of a higher school, and the number of students or graduates as the effects. The results indicate that the majority of the examined units were more effective in the model SBM-Max than SBM-Min. A group of public higher education institutions is effective and consistent with each other to a considerable extent.

In this article I present the main assumptions and discuss issues of pedagogy as a science and the field of education during a special meeting of the Committee of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. I focus on the institutional leaders in science teaching who are rectors and deans of Faculties of Education in Poland. Moreover, they are co-authors of relevant teaching and research solutions in science teaching. In the age of growing crisis in the academic community we can, as educators, discuss how no to be to be surprised by pathogenic processes and events, but how to be able to counteract them. Furthermore, how to show representatives of other academic disciplines and structures of learning, how to deal with common to us problems.

Higher education has become one of the key elements in building a competitive advantage for today’s knowledge-based economies. Universities are no longer just places traditionally associated with the transmission of knowledge but must also increasingly respond to the processes of marketisation and commercialisation. We observe dynamic social changes in higher education: the increase in the number of people studying at university level, flexibility of studying and learning programs, competing for students as a result of demographic processes, the risk of unemployment and competence mismatch among fresh graduates have become major challenges for universities. In this paper I will briefly discuss the neoliberal reform of higher education in Taiwan. In the last two decades, this small country in the Pacific Ocean has experienced extremely dynamic changes in the functioning of their higher education system and has become an important player in the global education market.

This paper investigates how the values of negative feedback from students’reflections should be exploited and utilized as an approach of pedagogical development. It was extracted as a step of the 3-year-action-research circles with an empirical study using the data collected from 96 cases of students’ reflections in a university of Poland for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Regardless the limitation of the diversity of the research tools and types of data, the study found the noticeable lessons through the process of problematizing the significant learning. The data was framed from the negative awareness at the wording and surface levels for quantitative descriptive and then these signals were directed to locate the messages holding the negative signals for qualitative analysis. Eight groups of codes were categorized using Atlas.ti from 172 quotations, extracted from 140 extracts of 96 cases of students’ reflections. The findings show that the negative signals are important to the teacher’s modifications and actions to alternate the future plans and teaching. In addition, seven problems were also generated from analyzing the quotations using this design. The attempts to fix these problems would facilitate the teachers to improve the skills of teaching and quality of the course. A different way of looking at students’ negative signals of this paper could be seen as an innovative approach to pedagogical development in comparison to the common usage of feedback itself which has been exploited divergently in education.

The massification of higher education has changed the role and value of study and led to dissemination of doctoral studies. This article starts with an overview of the law-based and historical changes of the idea of third cycle studies, reflected in their organisation in Poland. We will indicate incoherence noticeable between curriculum and expected skills and knowledge. The perspective will let us outline some problems related to importance and significance of PhD studies in graduates careers – academic, as well as professional in general. In this context, we can also perceive current consequences in terms of identity of doctoral students and their place at the university.

The aim of this paper is to present an autobiographical account on the prospects and process of academic career in Nordic countries, and specifically in Sweden. The method used is biographical, or self-ethnographic, dealing with life transitions including struggles and experiences when making the career. The point of departure is the final step in the academic career, i.e. Professorship, and reconstruction of the life events backwards, both as diachronic, a moment in time, as well as synchronic, over time dimensions. This includes research initiation, PhD writing, Postdoc experience, habilitation, and struggling to get a position of a senior lecturer and finally a professor. Involvement in various projects and international networking are presented. Biographical work and learning are used to understand how a woman researcher is navigating in a difficult male dominated terrain, including both negative and positive experiences.

Regardless of whether the adopted role of education is to prepare people for pursuing employment or building general values, it will include the identification and development of skills and competences as well as professional and personal attributes. Critical thinking, ingenuity and complex cognitive-social skills are precisely those areas in which people continue to outdo intelligent machines. The purpose of this article is to review the skills and competences that will be desirable in the future in relation to recent technological changes. They are preceded by selected macroeconomic data to illustrate the situation of higher education with an emphasis on Poland, where, despite positive returns on investment in education (the highest among OECD countries), since 2005 a systematic fall in demand for higher education has been observed. The empirical part presents the results of a pilot study aimed at determining the desired future skills and professional attributes of Polish employers. The basic data was collected manually using a quantitative study during three sessions at two different job fairs in Gdańsk in March 2017. According to the surveyed respondents (n = 55), professional experience, proficiency in the use of new media and formal education were indicated as the least important features, while learning and diligence – as the key competences for the future economy. In addition, the studies have shown the differences in the perception of these abilities and competences depending on the employer’s position on the market, the number of employees and the internal policies of the companies.

Ukraine is making a remarkable effort to match the current global educational tendencies. New technologies and the Internet are being implemented in all spheres of educational activity, including higher medical education. However, despite the proved importance of the Internet and ICTs implementation in learning, there is a gap in understanding the students' interests as well as the current state of Web-technologies usage in studying. In order to determine the experience of ICTs usage for learning purposes by medical students and highlight the present problems of e-learning development in Ukraine, the study was carried out at Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University. The survey involved 139 medical students of first through sixth year of study within three specialties, namely: general medicine, pediatrics, medical and prophylactic care. The results of the survey show that Internet and its technologies are mainly used as the accessory means of study. Medical students search, overview and learn a dditional information including professionally-oriented one (83%, 116/139). Taking into account a high level of trust (7.6/10) to the Internet and the tendency of the students to discuss information from Internet with their colleagues (96%, 134/139) rather than professionals (65%, 90/139) the following situation could have negative consequences in their future professional activity due to the possible presence of incorrect information in such resources. Students’ interest in the usage of different Internet sources for additional learning material forms the background and stimulus for the faculty to provide the possibility of using these resources in the process of study. The primary educational tasks promoting the e-learning development in Ukraine might be the selection, recommendation and development of highly-qualitative Internet sources and materials, as well as the usage of institutional web-sites and social media pages for teaching and learning purposes.
