The aim of the paper is an attempt to interpret process of sustainable development and revitalization of rural areas and also to point out instruments used by local authorities in supporting entrepreneurial development as a revitalization factor conducive to economic development. Presented studies allow to make a conclusion of complementary character of these processes. Development of rural areas mainly depend on localization of varied non-agricultural activities which should counteract of rural mono-functional development and promotes rural entrepreneurship. Sustainable development and revitalization represent complex notions concerned to formula of quantities and qualities in changing socio-economic system, which enhanced ecosystemic constrains. And the same time effi ciency criteria are related to social satisfaction and progress in life quality as main  onditions of the progress of civilization.

The creation of Sanctuarium Studzannae is connected with the cult of a miraculous painting of the Holy family and is closely linked with the history of Philippine priests, who were almost from the beginning guardians of the holy painting and curators of the Sanctuary. From the preserved historical transmissions it is known that at the end of 1664 there already existed a cult of Studzianna painting, which has at its source the so called miraculous adventure of a mason called Wojciech Lenartowicz, who fell gravely ill while repairing a stove. Then the Holy Mary from the picture manifested herself to the sickly stove fitter, promising him a return to health in exchange for special reverence to her image. She asked him to build a shrine, also presaging widening of her cult in this place. After this event, numerous groups of pilgrims started to pour into Studzianna, paying homage to the Holy Mary in the painting which was situated in the court chapel. By special decree on the 16th March 1671 the church declared the painting of the Holy family miraculous, allowing it public cult. In 1968 the painting of the Holy Family was capped with Papal crowns, and in 1973 the temple in Studzianna received the title of basilica minor. Studzianna and Poświętne are two places situated at Opoczynska grounds, north of Opoczna, among cultivated fields separated by lines of midfield stand density and surrounded by woods on the River Pilica. Administrative relics are situated in Poświętne settlement but the name of the neighborhood village Studzinna is linked with it. That is why both names are usually given. The sanctuary existing for over 300 years has influenced the shaping and development of Studzianna and Poświętne towns. The specifics of the cult determined functional - spatial set of this area which is also perfectly visible today. The pilgrimage movement and actions by the Philippine fathers are still factors which continue to create the development of Studzianna and Poświętne. Actions which tended to sustainable development of Studzianna - Poświętne, should nowadays be proceeded bi-directionally. The first direction is broadening the Philippine priests actions for fuller use of pilgrimage back-up and also enrichment and diversity of tourist, educational and cognitive activities. The second direction is protective actions which aim at preventing degradation of the antique cultural landscape of Studzianny-Poświętne.

Odnowa wsi jest jednym ze sposobów osiągania celów rozwojowych, umożliwiającym poprawę jakości życia na obszarach wiejskich. W artykule dokonano analizy przypadków zebranych podczas pobytu studyjnego w Dolnej Austrii. Wskazano czynniki, a także zaprezentowano rozwiązania o charakterze organizacyjno - instytucjonalnym, które w znacznym stopniu determinowały ich przebieg i pozwoliły osiągnąć zamierzone cele. Przedstawiono również wpływ podejmowanych działań w odniesieniu do procesów społeczno – gospodarczych zachodzących na gruncie lokalnym, regionalnym czy krajowym.
The village renewal is one of manners of attaining of development aims, making possible the improvement of quality of life on rural areas. In the article one fulfilled analyses of gathered cases during the studio stay in Lower Austria. Factors were showed, and also presented solutions with organizational - institutional character which greatly determined their course and permitted to reach intentional aims. Also introduced the in uence of undertaken activities with reference to social – economic processes occurring on local ground, regional or national.

Even until recently, industry and intensive agriculture were held responsible for degradation of the environment. Currently, it is clear that a significant part of the damages is generated by individual citizens because, after summing up their ‘little’ environmentally negative impacts, significant antropopressions are observed. Social pressures to abandon everyday practices that damage the environment are to be expected not only on the part of urban area inhabitants but rural area dwellers as well. The objective of the paper is to discuss conditions for implementing the concept of sustainable development in rural areas of the Podkarpacie Voivodship. Furthermore, the level of the farmers’ knowledge about sustainable development and environmental agriculture programs is discussed. Finally, reasons for implementation of the sustainable development principles in everyday practice are discussed in the paper.

One of the key challenges of present agriculture and rural areas is the pursuit of sustainable development. Encompassing enormous resources of a natural nature, rural areas should develop in accordance with the principles of sustainable development so that both current and future generations can benefit of them. Implementing the concept of sustainable development in rural areas is conditional on many factors and requires corrective activities, which is connected with the intervention of the state. The paper analyzes programs and instruments to support agricultural development and rural development in line with the concept of sustainable development at national and local level. Particular attention has been paid to “the Strategy of Lower Silesia Voivodship” and “Strategy for sustainable development of rural, agricultural and fisheries for 2012-2020”.

W artykule przedstawiono rolę gospodarstw rodzinnych w rozwoju obszarów wiejskich w Polsce. Analiza wykazała, że Polska jest doskonałym przykładem tego, jak kompleksowa polityka rozwoju obszarów wiejskich może prowadzić do udanej modernizacji rolnictwa. Badanie etapów formowania i aktualnego stanu rolnictwa rodzinnego w Polsce pozwoliło na zarysowanie kluczowych czynników jego rozwoju. Ustalono, że rodzinne gospodarstwo rolne pełni wzajemnie powiązane funkcje: komercyjno-produkcyjną, społeczną, środowiskową, kulturowo-cywilizacyjną i osadniczo-wiejską. Udowodniono, że rodzinne gospodarstwa rolne są dominującą siłą napędową rozwoju obszarów wiejskich oraz kształtowania bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego i środowiskowego oraz stabilności społeczno-ekonomicznej w Polsce. Mechanizm zarządzania rozwojem rolnictwa, zgodnie ze Wspólną Polityką Rolną (WPR) Unii Europejskiej (UE), oparty jest na kluczowych czynnikach zrównoważonego rozwoju obszarów wiejskich: gospodarczym, społecznym i środowiskowym, które zapewniają poprawę dobrostanu rolników i stabilności społeczno-ekonomicznej, ochrony środowiska i humanitarnego traktowania zwierząt gospodarskich. Zaproponowano pojęcie rozwoju obszarów wiejskich, które opiera się na rozwoju rolnictwa rodzinnego, co pozwoliło uwzględnić nie tylko zasady mechanizmu rynkowego, ale także ograniczy antropogeniczne oddziaływanie człowieka na przyrodę i przyczyni się do osiągnięcia równowagi społeczno-ekologicznej.
The article presents the role of family farms in the development of rural areas in Poland. The analysis has shown that Poland is an excellent example of how a comprehensive rural development policy can lead to a successful modernisation of agriculture. The study of the stages of the formation and current state of family farming in Poland enabled the author to outline key factors of its development. It has been established that a family farm has interrelated functions: commercial-production, social, environmental, cultural-civilisational, and settlement- rural. It has been proven that family farms are a dominant driving force behind rural development and the formation of food and environmental security and socio-economic stability in Poland. The mechanism for managing agricultural development, in line with the European Union’s (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), is based on the key factors of sustainable rural development: economic, social, and environmental, which ensure improved farmer welfare and socio-economic stability, environmental protection, and humane treatment of livestock. A concept of rural development was proposed, based on the development of family farming, which made it possible to take into account not only the principles of the market mechanism but also to reduce the anthropogenic impact of man on nature and to contribute to the achievement of socio-ecological balance.

W pracy przedstawiono stan i rozwój rolnictwa ekologicznego w Polsce i poszczególnych województwach. Wykazano, że na przestrzeni lat 2011–2020 liczba ekologicznych producentów oraz powierzchnia ekologicznych upraw uległy zmniejszeniu. Odnotowana dynamika zmian była zróżnicowana w zależności od analizowanego województwa. Największą i stabilną liczbą producentów ekologicznych odznaczyło się województwo warmińsko-mazurskie. W badanych latach wzrosła liczba producentów zajmujących się przetwórstwem produktów ekologicznych oraz produkcją pasz i/lub drożdży. Wzrost liczby analizowanych przetwórców dotyczył każdego z województw, a największy odnotowano w mazowieckim i wielkopolskim. Łączna powierzchnia ekologicznych użytków rolnych (w okresie i po konwersji) istotnie zmniejszyła się. Największe spadki ekologicznych zasiewów wykazano w województwie zachodniopomorskim i podkarpackim.
The manuscript presents the state and development of organic farming in Poland and individual provinces. It has been shown that over the years 2011–2020 the number of organic producers and the area of organic crops decreased. The recorded dynamics of changes varied depending on the analyzed voivodship. The Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship had the largest and stable number of organic producers. In the analyzed years, the number of producers involved in the processing of organic products and the production of fodder and/or yeast increased. The increase in the number of analyzed processors concerned each of the voivodships, and the highest was recorded in Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie. The total area of ecological agricultural land (during the period and after conversion) has significantly decreased. The biggest drops in ecological crops were found in the Zachodniopomorskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships.

The study is to consider two issues in the field of nature conservation. The first of them comes down to the question, whether the legal regulation concerning the area forms of nature protection is a kind of universal, or contains specific instruments relating only to rural areas. The second of the issues raised, is an attempt to answer the question of whether the legal regulation concerning the protection of nature can be seen as implementing the principle of sustainable development, especially in relation to rural areas. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the legislature does not provide „special” regime of nature conservation in rural areas, and the provisions of the Nature Conservation Act in principle implement the directive sustainable development, despite the fact that the term does not appear in the provisions of this Act.

The article focuses on opportunities and threats to the development of organic farming in the perspective of two paradoxes: firstly, a paradox between multifunctional rural development and multifunctional agriculture development, since the core of the first concept marginalises agriculture although it is simultaneously suggested that multifunctional agriculture is necessary to ensure the quality of rusticity in the rural areas. Secondly, there is a paradox between two social roles of organic farmers: they are expected to guarantee rusticity, but they are also business people who need to sell their produce and it may lead to a significant reduction of their role to a mere economic category. To examine the chances and barriers the authors have conducted ten semi-structured interviews with purposely chosen organic farmers from Lower Silesia. Results show that organic farmers marginalise one of their social roles, of a businessman, through demarcation of their production (growth cannot be too big), so the biggest chance to develop organic farming is to sell directly using short supply chains. The results also suggest that the most important barrier which limits organic farming, is separation between the place where safe food is produced (the rural area) and a place where farmers sell their food (the city) which is perceived by the farmers as almost insurmountable. The results should help in better understanding of social and economic aspects of organic farming.

Underdevelopment of rural areas, in spite of many advantages of living there, causes the need of searching for the new directions of the development of these areas. Due to the interaction between the rural area and forest, we can expect that the development of one area will be an opportunity for the other one. This is possible due to the implementation of sustainable development idea, taking place in current transformation of forest management and agriculture. The present policy of rural development in Poland is a significant tool for implementation of forestry-related activities. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present that the rational forest management can be an instrument of influence on the development of rural areas. In the article, besides the results of a survey that was carried out, Polish and foreign literature, as well as statistical data were used. The empirical material that forms the basis of this work was collected during surveys conducted in 2011 on a sample of 21 representatives of managerial staff from the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Olsztyn. The results of a survey indicate that in the areas where we can find real and economically measurable effects of the implications of the rational forest management principles there are mainly: •• a reduction of unemployment rate by creating jobs directly in forest management, as permanent and seasonal work; •• development of forestry-connected sectors and owing to the fact growth of employment rate in the region (paper industry, furniture, woodworking); •• economic benefits and maintaining traditions associated with gathering undergrowth goods (fruit, mushrooms etc.); •• stable and reliable income to government budgets from forest taxes; •• collaboration with local institutions, associations, institutions in order to co-create strategies, develop plans and environmental awareness; •• support to hunting economy; •• enhance the advantages of the region in the context of the tourist and recreation services. The impact of the forest management is not limited to the described benefits that can be economically measured. We should not forget about a number of other advantages which are delivered for the society indirectly or which are difficult in the valuation, eg. the beauty of the landscape or clean air. In that case, it is worth perceiving a forest not only through the prism of a large area, but also as an economic sector strongly related to the rural development.

European, which sets the framework for maintaining the EU’s internal market, and the domestic one, which flexibly implements the shaping of rural development. Strategic plans will be one of the key documents enabling the financing of agriculture after 2022 in the EU. In the case of Poland, it will be the National Strategic Plan. The article presents the main assumptions of the plan and the procedural issues related to the issuance of the plan. An assessment of the implementation of the postulates to simplify the Common Agricultural Policy on the example of new regulations was also presented. Attempts were made to find an answer to the question of how the new regulations will affect the competitiveness of Polish agriculture. The National Strategic Plan, by selecting only some aid instruments, has a significant impact on the shape and development of Polish agriculture.

The paper looks at the prevalent approach to agricultural and rural development in the European Union, describing its origin, essence and the rationale behind it. The analysis makes use of descriptive and comparative methods. The author notes that the policy of sustainable development is currently the common approach to development processes in agriculture and rural areas in both the European Union and elsewhere. This approach is a response to some negative trends provoked by previous policies,Roszkowska-Mądra says. As the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) changes, it is becoming increasingly oriented toward sustainable development. According to Roszkowska-Mądra, an optimal approach to the development of Poland’s rural areas, under the current socioeconomic and environmental conditions, is proposed by a French model calling for the development of what is known as multifunctional agriculture. The model involves a combination of exogenous and endogenous factors adapted to the type of farming system.

Rozwój ekonomiczny obszarów wiejskich ukierunkowany jest na nowe sposoby wykorzystania gospodarstw rolnych i aktywizację ich mieszkańców. Duże możliwości związane są z rozwojem różnorodnych form turystyki zrównoważonej. Coraz większe zainteresowanie wśród rolników wzbudza agroturystyka. Jest to forma wypoczynku odbywającego się na terenach wiejskich o charakterze rolniczym, oparta na bazie noclegowej i aktywności rekreacyjnej związanej z gospodarstwem rolnym lub równoważnym i jego otoczeniem (przyrodniczym, produkcyjnym, usługowym). Umiejętność obsługi ruchu turystycznego przez mieszkańców wsi związana jest zatem z rozwojem ich przedsiębiorczości i gotowością podejmowania nowych przedsięwzięć. Celem artykułu jest próba określenia roli agroturystyki w zrównoważonym rozwoju obszarów wiejskich w Polsce.
The economic development of rural areas be steered on new ways the activity of agricultural farms and their occupants’ activation. The large possibilities be connected with development of varied forms of sustainable tourism. More and more larger interest among farmers induce agritourism. It is the form of rest on country areas by agricultural character, leaning by hostel base and recreational activities connected from agricultural or this equivalent and their entourage (natural, productive, service). The know-how of service of touristic by occupants of village be connected therefore with development their enterprise and the readiness of undertaking the new projects. The aim of paper is the test of qualification of role and the notability of agritourism in development of rural areas in Poland.
