    La plus que mère, La Cérémonie des poupées and La Maison de l’âme, the trilogy of the Belgian writer and ethnologist Chantal Deltenre – published in the first decade of the 21st century, illustrates post-modern religiosity, the main characteristics of which are diversity, syncretism and relativism. The search for sacrum is supposed to be a kind of initiation journey undertaken mostly by lost and uprooted individuals. It is a search for a safe and meaningful space (place), which is not just the opposite of the shapeless and meaningless world of profanum, but also one that allows to build one’s own identity.

    To see differently, the commercial space in texts by Émile Zola, Annie Ernaux and Natalia Fiedorczuk With his Shop Girls of Paris Émile Zola introduces the commercial space of the “grand magasin” into the literature. The contemporary authors Annie Ernaux ( Look at the Lights, My Love) and Natalia Fiedorczuk (How to Love Shopping Centers) revise that space and our relationships to the commonplaces (called by Marc Augé non-lieux/non-places). They invite us to see differently and to discern by literary texts the polyphony of contemporary commercial spaces.

    This paper aims at analysing and comparing several nominal expressions of plurality from a semantic and a discursive perspective: inhabited place names (cities, countries – la France), plural nominal syntagmas (les Français), human collective nouns (le peuple français, la population française, l’opinion française). From a denotative point of view, these expressions may be compared and may sometimes be substituted for one another, but each of them has distinctive characteristics, concerning the potential for ambiguity, the lexical meaning, the globalizing vs individualizing interpretation. By analysing mainly political discourse and basing our study on a semantico-referential approach, we will attempt to grasp the discursive and rhetorical stakes involved in the use of these different nominal expressions.

    Le roman de Véronique Olmi, Bakhita (2017) retrace l’histoire de sainte Joséphine Bakhita en démontrant le processus qui va du mépris, de l’humiliation, de l’animalisation à l’acquisition de la dignité, voire à la sainteté. Le texte met l’accent non pas sur la dégradation des sentiments et de l’être humain, mais il montre comment dépasser les limites imposées par le mépris des autres et atteindre la plénitude. L’objectif du présent article sera, dans un premier temps, d’étudier des manifestations du mépris et des moyens littéraires qui permettent de l’exprimer. Dans un deuxième temps, l’analyse se centrera sur le processus qui va du mépris vers la plénitude, dans l’acception que lui donne Charles Taylor. Enfin, il sera aussi intéressant de poser la question sur les raisons du succès de ce roman « hagiographique » en France laïque.
    Véronique Olmi’s novel entitled Bakhita (2017), telling the story of St. Josephine Bakhita, shows the process of achieving dignity, or even sanctity, through overcoming disdain, humiliation, and animalization. However, it is not the degradation of feelings and a human being that is emphasized in Olmi’s novel but the possibility of overcoming the condition of a disdained person in order to enjoy freedom and fullness. The aim of the article is therefore to explore the manifestations of disdain in the analyzed text and the use of rhetorical devices applied to express contempt. The article also examines the process leading from disdain to fullness as defined by Charles Taylor, as well as the reasons for the popularity of the novel in France, regarded as the most laic country in Europe.

    Annie’s Ernaux’ A Man’s Place and Assia Djebar’s Nowhere in My Father’s House can be described as accounts of what separates fathers from daughters in the context of generational and class divisions. Ernaux connects the story of her father’s life and death with the one of herself. Djebar returns to the late colonial period and gives a description of complex transcultural experiences. In both books, the authors employ a special literary form which is referred to as récit de filiation by D. Viart. The reconstruction of the Father is directly linked with the reflection on the processes of writing, the sense of literature, and the necessity of rejection of the fathers’ heritage.

    The novels of Vera Feyder are concerned with identity, memory, space and travel. In her writing her characters inhabit past and present, dream and reality. In particular, dreams and aquatic landscapes intersect in various creative ways in her oeuvre. This article analyses the contours of such landscape, understood in terms both internal and external, in two of her novels: Caldeiras (1982) and La Belle voyageuse endormie dans la brousse (2002).
    L’œuvre narrative de Vera Feyder est focalisée sur deux thèmes essentiels : la recherche de l’identité et la quête d’un lieu à soi auxquels il faut ajouter la mémoire et le voyage. Ils se retrouvent tous dans le rêve que développent les personnages de ses romans, en voyageant entre le passé et le présent et entre différentes idenités qu’ils arborent toute leur vie durant. Ce rêve est apparenté à l’eau qui constitue la composante majeure du paysage romanesque de Feyder. L’article analyse les particularités de ce paysage qui est notamment un paysage intérieur, et se réfère à deux romans : Caldeiras (1982) et La Belle voyageuse endormie dans la brousse (2002).

    Pope Francis encourages Christians to an active presence in social life. The author claims that the Pope’s appeal can be fully understood by analysing the history of the Church in Poland both distant and contemporary. When the communists ruled presence of the Church in social life was perceived as a political activity. At that time, believers struggled to preserve their true values, demanded freedom of speech and religion suppressed by the totalitarian system. Today again the Church is perceived as a part of political dispute. It arouses opposition of a significant part of society. Formerly, even non-believers stood on the side of the Church because it defended human rights. Looking into the Social Doctrine of the Church the author seeks arguments for restoring its rightful place in Polish society.
    Papież Franciszek zachęca chrześcijan do aktywnej obecności w życiu społecznym. Autor artykułu twierdzi, że apel papieża można w pełni zrozumieć przez analizę historii Kościoła w Polsce – zarówno tej odległej, jak i tej współczesnej. W epoce komunizmu obecność Kościoła w życiu społecznym postrzegana była jako działalność polityczna. Wtedy wierzący walczyli o zachowanie prawdziwych wartości, domagali się wolności słowa i wyznania tłamszonych przez system totalitarny. Dzisiaj również Kościół w Polsce postrzegany jest jako strona w sporze politycznym; wzbudza to sprzeciw znacznej części społeczeństwa. Dawniej nawet niewierzący opowiadali się po stronie Kościoła, który bronił praw człowieka. Dzisiaj wielu praktykujących katolików dystansuje się od stanowiska Kościoła w sprawach społeczno-politycznych. Autor szuka w doktrynie społecznej Kościoła argumentów za przywróceniem Kościołowi należnego mu miejsca w polskim społeczeństwie.

    Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
    In 1943, Robert Brasillach wrote a novel entitled La Conquérante. It was intended to be a fictional eulogy of French colonial pioneers in Morocco in 1912. Given his commitment to Vichy’s wartime policy of collaboration, the novel turned out to be an epitaph for the loss of asignificant part of the French Empire. This article proposes a taxonomy of places and spaces in the novel, together with an analysis of their function and how they interact with the characters. It introduces a new concept of isotopias, or fictional transformations of places in literature. It concludes that, although written in the ‘mode’ of possession, the novel proved paradoxically to be the swansong of a new and dispossessed mother-country.
