The article discusses an extremely idealistic message of the 1886 novel L ’Ève future by Villiers de l’lsle-Adam. The motif of an artificial woman constructed by a genius scientist is a pretext for philosophical and metaphysical meditation on human fate, an attempt to reach - through art - the deepest mysteries of the spiritual world set against shallow visible reality. The subject matter and rhetorics of the work is an expressive illustration of symbolism in the field of French novel.

Autor artykułu w konkluzji swego przedłożenia zastanawia się czy Afryka może doświadczyć w przyszłości symptomów sekularyzacji. Jednak aktual- nie na horyzoncie jawi się raczej zróżnicowane doświadczenie transcendencji w kulturze Afryki. Staje się ono podstawą dla określonych postaw etycznych, które są też wypadkową wiary i doświadczenia osobistego. Koniunkcja wiary i rozumu nie jest tu identyczna z doświadczeniem kultury zachodniej. Dlate- go proklamacja wiary w Jezusa Chrystusa przy zastosowaniu kategorii platoń- skich, kartezjańskich czy tomistycznych może nie trafiać do odbiorcy, który doświadcza swej wiary w komunii z historią. Na jej kanwie odkrywa dar życia i jego Dawcę. Afrykańczyk wyraża swą wiarę też przy pomocy różnych form językowych przejętych ze świata mitów, rytów i wierzeń, które wypowiadają świat niewidzialny. Stąd też uprawnione wydają się wysiłki wcielenia tego bo- gactwa kulturowego w dyskurs teologiczny Afryki. Wydają się one analogiczne do prób osadzenia współczesnej myśli chrześcijańskiej w kontekście postmo- dernistycznym.

The article aims to analyze L’Écrivain public and L’Enfant de sable by Tahar Ben Jelloun, focusing on the issue of hybrydity which is discussed from the postcolonial and postmodern perspective (Bhabha, De Toro). The analysis concentrates on the oriental tale which deconstructs the paradigm of the novel and the autobiography. However, the article also depicts that Tahar Ben Jelloun derives his ideas from the oral tradition so as to, similarly as Jorge Luis Borges, give his works an intertextual and intercultural dimension. Through the nomadic structure of the tale, which is present both in the novel and in the autobiography, the writer rejects the idea of a conservative and monolithic Moroccan society and opposes stereotypes. The paper deals with the rise of French sequences where two etymologically and functionally divergent markers, an erstwhile reflexive se and the l’un l’autre cluster, combine to encode reciprocity. Unlike in other old Romance languages, in medieval French (12th to 14th centuries) cumulative reciprocal constructions arise relatively late. In the meantime, they rely either on l’un … l’autre (acting as substitutes of verbal arguments) or on se. The only exception involves pronominal verbs of movement that encode symmetric relations. Two independent mechanisms are claimed to have been responsible for broadening the domain of cumulative sequences: the weakening of anaphoric links of l’un … l’autre to their antecedents and subjectification. Since plural subject-verb agreement is obligatory in sentences with reciprocal se-verbs, the singular l’un is unlikely to fill a slot for subject. Therefore, it is coerced into drifting rightwards to form a single syntactic constituent with l’autre. Subjectifi cation circumscribes cases where, notwithstanding the presence of l’un l’autre, se accompanying a verbal plural is sufficient to convey reciprocity. As a consequence, cumulative sequences become widespread in 16th century. All in all, the shift is viewed as an instance of construction becoming increasingly schematic over time.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate in which cases the translators use the adaptation when they are confronted with a term related to sociocultural aspects. We will discuss the notions of equivalence and adaptation and their limits in the translation. This article means to demonstrate that the complexity of Mysterious Island, stemming from the description of the place, this silent but omnipresent character, prevent it from being limited to the young readership intended by Hetzel, Verne’s editor. The anticolonial and antislavery discourse established as the ideological principle early on, is debunked by a counter‑discourse based on new knowledge of anthropology. Conclusions about Verne’s response to Defoe are also addressed.
