The Zurich and Schaffhausen Universities of Teacher Education have ideal conditions for integrating computer-mediated activities into English language and methodology courses. This article describes a number of face-to-face and online computer-based activities and argues that learners who live in close proximity can nevertheless benefit from participating in online activities. Examples from each setting that promote in-class or online communication as well as help to provide opportunities for improving learners’ language and content competence will be described. This article attempts to provide arguments for students to participate in - and thus instructors to host – learning opportunities in computer-mediated settings.

W odniesieniu do koncepcji badań porównawczych, analizom komparatystycznym poddane zostają wyznaczniki pedeutologiczne kształcenia nauczycieli i nauczycielek w Iranie, Niemczech i Polsce. Ramą porównawczą są zaś europejskie standardy kształcenia nauczycieli.

Opis:
Developing and providing a register of rights and regularities underpinning the work of prospective teachers is a complex process. The current transmissive model of training in Poland does not meet the expectations with respect to preparation of new teaching staff. Thus designing new models of teacher training, including early childhood education teachers, should function in parallel with practical activities. In this article, I present a competence model of teacher training, which is my original proposal. It is the outcome of analysing theoretical and empirical achievements, and our own experience. The basic area of activities undertaken as part of teacher training is the development of relevant substantive competencies resulting from the student's selection of a specific subject area, psychological and pedagogical competencies, communication skills as well as methodological competencies, resulting from the specificity of the chosen subject area. The theoretical perspective of the proposed model is determined by the ideas of constructivism and the general taxonomy of learning outcomes by Ziemowit Włodarski. I divided the competence model of training into four stages: 1) simple student with learner-pupil contacts; 2) student as a teacher assistant; 3) student as an accompanying teacher; 4) student as an independent teacher.

The growing use of digital technologies in educational settings, paralleled by a paradigm change in educational theory from an instructivist transmission approach to constructivist and sociocultural theories of learning, demands more adapted teacher training programs, both technical and pedagogical. Looking at factors influencing teachers’ implementation of ICT in the foreign language classroom and guided by the results of a needs analysis survey conducted among twenty six language teachers from twenty five different European countries, the DOTS project aims to develop an online workspace with bite-sized learning objects for autonomous use by language professionals, particularly freelance teachers who frequently miss out on the training opportunities provided for their full-time colleagues.

The issue undertaken in this article concentrates on entrepreneurship as the key competence of the teachers of preschool and early school children in Poland. A hypothesis was made that developing this competence in the course of professional teacher training is the condition of effective children education. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted with a sample of 232 head teachers of schools and kindergartens (public and private ones). The presented results of the research tackle expectations of employers towards recruited teachers with regards to this competence. Accomplishment of the research project allowed for formulating recommendations for teacher training within the framework of education for entrepreneurship by indicating directions and areas of implementing necessary changes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate prospective teachers’ experiences in utilizing Second Life for learning English, differentiating between personal use of the said virtual world for learning the English language and its potential use for teaching English in the future. The results showed that the students perceived the use of Second Life to be beneficial for communication in English and they regarded it as a great source of the target language vocabulary. They also found it useful in practicing writing skills and learning new words and phrases. The use of the said world allowed the students to point out some disadvantages. Among other things, they included the incorrect use of English by some Second Life users, problems with finding people to talk with and rude behavior. In addition, the study participants did not regard Second Life as useful in developing oral skills or grammar. Finally, the findings revealed the prospective teachers’ willingness to use Second Life for teaching speaking and writing skills as well as the target language vocabulary. A selection of the students’ proposals of language activities to be used in a virtual world is also offered.

The world of education has changed. Information is available anywhere and at any time. It can be daunting to understand and assess it and to distinguish a hoax from objective reality. The training of future teachers at universities needs to be changed so that a graduate from a Faculty of Education will become a professional capable of teaching others how to learn. Teachers can no longer only transmit information and evaluate how students acquire it. They should make learning meaningful and guide learners toward critical thinking. The underlying assumption is that they themselves can think critically. The aim of the study is to compare the level of critical thinking in university students between two generations of students, Generation Y (Millennials) and Generation Z (the iGeneration).

Opis:
The paper discusses the challenges of foreign language teacher preparation in Slovakia and Poland resulting from observed tendencies such as digitalisation, mobility and specialisation of disciplines. The background for these reflections on the state of teacher training education is the document European Profile for Language Teacher Education – a Frame of Reference (2004) and DigComp 2.2 The Digital Competence Framework for Citizens (2022), which point out the main fields essential for the development of high-quality foreign language teachers in terms of digital, life and entrepreneurial competences. The authors of the paper analyze example curricula at two universities, one in Poland (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) and one in Slovakia (Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra) to answer the following research questions: how will future foreign language teachers be supported in developing their competences at the tertiary level? How do the current foreign language teacher training curricula at universities in Slovakia and Poland incorporate the need for the development of new competences? The results of the analysis present the discrepancies at both universities in the way the recommendations concerning competence development are incorporated, however they also reveal the weaknesses and strengths of the existing solutions.

The study explores trainee teachers’ opinions on selected aspects of the languageteaching profession. Reflecting on the reasons for becoming a teacher, on a language teacher’s professional qualities, and on the positive and negative aspects of the profession appears to be necessary at the starting point of professional training. A qualitative method was employed to collect the data. The students were asked to answer four survey questions pertaining to the issues mentioned above. Thirty-five undergraduate students completed the survey. Their answers were then analysed, which resulted in suggesting some procedures that could be implemented in the training programme. The findings revealed generally positive attitudes to the language teaching profession. However, some actions should be also taken to eliminate a few subjective theories that could negatively influence the students’ approach, such as the feeling of having power over learners, or controversial ways of dealing with discipline problems in the classroom. The study emphasised the role of reflection in the initial stages of teacher training

The aim of the study was to analyze Facebook profi les of teachers in Poland and Kazakhstan as the virtual educational space where intercultural competencies are manifested and further developed. The rationale for intercultural learning was derived from the pedagogies of Abay and Korczak while the list of attitudes, skills and knowledge to be observed was adapted from Deardorff’s (2009) model. Digital ethnographic research approach was used for capturing teachers’ behavior and artifacts in the fi eld site. Teachers collaboration on a divergent problem and focus discussion afterwards provided further narrative material of refl ective nature. The results suggest that Facebook profi les show ample evidence of competent intercultural behavior; they could be considered as e-portfolios and further researched for development of proper educational and validation tools for teacher training involving global networks.
