Definiteness-indefiniteness category and logical quantificationThis work has been written within the “Logic and Language” project, realized under a cooperation agreement between the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Bulgarian Language of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The publication of a many-volume Bulgarian Polish Grammar (12 monographs), and of a Polish-Bulgarian Contrastive Grammar, from now on: Synthesis, is completed. Theories of mathematical logic are satisfied in perfect way in a natural language, which is shown by our understanding of the semantic definiteness / indefiniteness category as a system of scope-based quantification notions. A natural language complements and modifies logical theories. For example, understanding of the definiteness / indefiniteness category as a sentence category follows from the language material, especially in article languages. In such languages, quantification of the predicate is a necessary prerequisite for interpretation. Also introduction of the notions of strong and weak quantification meanings is motivated, for example, by the need to distinguish between the meanings of expressions like Pol. pewien x, jakiś x / Bulg. njakoj x, njakakyv x on the nominal phrase level, and by understanding of the ambiguity of quantification expressions like Bulg. vinagi, ponjakoga / Pol. zawsze, czasami. The fact of treating the definiteness / indefiniteness category as a sentence category expands understanding of the incomplete quantification notion also with respect to the verbal phrase, rather than, as in Ajdukiewicz’s approach, with respect to the nominal phrase only. Similarly, a proper name in a natural language is not a unique name, like in mathematical logic, but requires additional unique quantification. A network-based description of time is the first attempt at this type of description in the subject literature. In the present article, I stress that fact that quantification of states and events understood as in Petri net theory reveals the dependence between the aspectual and temporal meanings of verb, and proves that the information on time and aspect need not be dealt with separately.

In this article, we make some brief remarks on overt and covert movement in logical grammar. With respect to covert movement (e.g. quantification), we observe how a treatment in terms of displacement calculus interacts with normal modalities for intensionality to allow a coding in logical grammar of the distinction between weak and strong quantifiers (i.e. those that may or may not scope nonlocally such as a and every respectively). With respect to overt movement (e.g. relativisation), we observe how displacement calculus can support a coding of a linear filler-gap dependency similar to that employed in lambda grammars, but we argue that this general approach does not extend to either the multiplicity nor the island-sensitivity of parasitic gaps, for which we advocate instead treatment in terms of a bracketconditioned contraction subexponential.

Opis:
Use of an imported external standard curve is common in real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Two practical strategies for long-term experiments include importing a grand mean standard curve to all accumulated runs or using daily imported standard curves, fixing the slope at the beginning of the experiment and calibrating successive runs with curves generated from this imported slope, adding a single standard that registers the variation in the y-intercept. This study determines the influence that a change in reagent lots has on these two calibration approaches when determining mRNA copy numbers of the ornithine decarboxylase and porphobilinogen deaminase genes. Two sets of determinations were run with the use of lot A and lot B. A marked decrease in the crossing points (Cp) in the standards for both genes at all concentration levels was observed with the change in lots. A grand mean standard curve was generated for each gene and each set and comparisons between the sets were performed. Statistically significant differences were found with respect to the y-intercept but not the slope, suggesting that the change of reagent lot affected the detection sensitivity but not the efficiency of the reaction. The excellent correlation coefficients obtained for these curves for each gene were not achieved when overall data from both sets were combined to generate an overall grand mean standard curve. We conclude that when faced with a change of RT-PCR reagent lot that will affect the detection sensitivity of the method, samples should be calculated with either the daily imported standard curves or with the respective grand mean standard curve for each lot.

This paper aims to integrate logical operators into frame-based semantics. Frames are semantic graphs that allow lexical meaning to be captured in a fine-grained way but that do not come with a natural way to integrate logical operators such as quantifiers. The approach we propose stems from the observation that modal logic is a powerful tool for describing relational structures, including frames. We use its hybrid logic extension in order to incorporate quantification and thereby allow for inference and reasoning. We integrate our approach into a type theoretic compositional semantics, formulated within Abstract Categorial Grammars. We also show how the key ingredients of hybrid logic, nominals and binders, can be used to model semantic coercion, such as the one induced by the begin predicate. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed syntax-semantics interface, all the examples can be run and tested with the Abstract Categorial Grammar development toolkit.

In many Reinforcement Learning (RL) tasks, the classical online interaction of the learning agent with the environment is impractical, either because such interaction is expensive or dangerous. In these cases, previous gathered data can be used, arising what is typically called Offline RL. However, this type of learning faces a large number of challenges, mostly derived from the fact that exploration/exploitation trade-off is overshadowed. In addition, the historical data is usually biased by the way it was obtained, typically, a sub-optimal controller, producing a distributional shift from historical data and the one required to learn the optimal policy. In this paper, we present a novel approach to deal with the uncertainty risen by the absence or sparse presence of some state-action pairs in the learning data. Our approach is based on shaping the reward perceived from the environment to ensure the task is solved. We present the approach and show that combining it with classic online RL methods make them perform as good as state of the art Offline RL algorithms such as CQL and BCQ. Finally, we show that using our method on top of established offline learning algorithms can improve them.

A study was conducted in four selected local government areas of Sokoto state in the extreme North-western part of Nigeria to quantify Sclerocarya birrea fruits as feed supplement for ruminant animals. The areas were Kware, Wamakko, Bodinga and Rabah. A check list was used to obtain information from ten respondents from five districts in each local government area making a total of 200 respondents. Information collected includes tree availability, yield and uses. Data generated from the study were subjected to simple descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. Results obtained indicated that 48 % of the respondents reported the availability of S. birrea while 20 % indicated its scarcity. 43 % of the respondents reported the use of S. birrea as food and medicine for animal and man and 10 % reported its use as fuel and wood work. Kware local government had a significantly higher number of S. birrea trees compared to other locations (P<0.05). However, the yield obtainable was significantly higher in Bodinga and Rabah local government areas (P<0.05) compared to Kware and Wamakko. Results indicated that a total of 13,953; 10,377; 11,069 and 9,641 kg of S. birrea could be obtained from Kware, Bodinga, Rabah and Wammako Local Government areas annually. It was concluded that S. birrea is a potential feed supplement in the dry sub-humid zone of Nigeria.

From the Problems of Dictionaries and Multi-lingual CorporaThe article describes the work on a number of dictionaries being developed by the Corpus Linguistics and Semantics Group of the Institute of Slavic PAS. They include “Contemporary Bulgarian-Polish Dictionary”, “Bulgarian-Polish Online Dictionary” and “Russian-Bulgarian-Polish Dictionary”. The dictionaries differ in the numbers of entries, as well as in the different degrees of their connection with parallel corpora being elaborated under the “Clarin” project. All the discussed dictionaries are similar with respect to their use of traditional, syntactic classifiers and of semantic classifiers, introduced for the first time in the existing lexicographical practice. Thanks to the “Polish-Bulgarian-Russian Corpus”, the Group has managed to verify the results of contrasting Polish and Bulgarian in the light of scope-based logical quantification. Thanks to the Russian material added to the trilingual corpus, the researchers have managed to confirm the fact that from the viewpoint of “incomplete quantification” Russian and Polish (synthetic languages) behave similarly, and are opposed to the analytic Bulgarian.

This work aims at increasing the performance prediction for acoustic propagation systems that will operate in the presence of the inevitable parameters uncertainty. In the present contribution, the finite element method is applied to solve an acoustic problem described by the Helmholz equation when the geometric and material properties present uncertainty. The influence of the uncertainty of physical parameters on the pressure field is discussed. The results using the polynomial chaos expansion method are compared with Monte Carlo simulations. It is show that uncertainty levels in the input data could result in large variability in the calculated pressure field in the domain.

Uncertainty propagation plays a pivotal role in structural reliability assessment. This paper introduces a novel uncertainty propagation method for structural reliability under different knowledge stages based on probability theory, uncertainty theory and chance theory. Firstly, a surrogate model combining the uniform design and least-squares method is presented to simulate the implicit limit state function with random and uncertain variables. Then, a novel quantification method based on chance theory is derived herein, to calculate the structural reliability under mixed aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. The concepts of chance reliability and chance reliability index (CRI) are defined to show the reliable degree of structure. Besides, the selection principles of uncertainty propagation types and the corresponding reliability estimation methods are given according to the different knowledge stages. The proposed methods are finally applied in a practical structural reliability problem, which illustrates the effectiveness and advantages of the techniques presented in this work.

Verb aspect, alternations and quantificationIn this paper we are briefly discuss the nature of Bulgarian verb aspect and argue that the verb aspect pairs are different lexical units with different (although related) meaning, different argument structure (reflecting categories, explicitness and referential status of arguments) and different sets of semantic and syntactic alternations. The verb prefixes resulting in perfective verbs derivation in some cases can be interpreted as lexical quantifiers as well. Thus the Bulgarian verb aspect is related (in different way) both with the potential for the generation of alternations and with the prefixal lexical quantification. It is shown that the scope of the lexical quantification by means of verbal prefixes is the quantified verb phrase and the scope remains constant in all derived alternations. The paper concerns the basic issues of these complex problems, while the detailed description of the conditions satisfying particular alternation or particular lexical quantification are subject of a more detailed study.

Synthetic food dyes (E102, E104, E110, E122, E124, E132, E133) were concentrated by solid phase extraction on aminopropyl modified silica with aqueous sodium hydroxide or selected amines as eluents. Ponceau 4R (E124) was used as the model dye in the studies of the elution step. The recoveries of E124 differed depending on the eluent and ranged from 76% (AMP) to over 90% (TEA, imidazole, NaOH). Diluted aqueous triethanolamine (TEA) was found to be a suitable eluent for E124 but other dyes were eluted more effectively with NaOH. The solid extraction process was combined with UV/VIS spectroscopy to quantify synthetic dyes in drinks and OTC pharmaceutical tablets. The SPE-UV/VIS spectroscopic method was validated in terms of linearity, accuracy (recovery of dyes from spiked preparations), precision (repeatability, intermediate precision) and limits of detection/quantification. The method was found sufficiently fast, easy and reliable for the routine control of dyes in these types of products.

In the minichannel it has been observed: bubbly flow, flow of confined bubbles, flow of elongated bubbles, slug flow and semi-annular flow. The time series recorded by laser-phototransistor sensor was analysed using the recurrence quantification analysis. The two coefficients:Recurrence rate (RR) and Determinism (DET) have been used for identification of differences between the dynamics of two-phase flow patterns. The algorithm which has been used normalizes the analysed time series before calculating the recurrence plots. Therefore in analysis the quantitative signal characteristicswas neglected. Despite of the neglect of quantitative signal characteristics the analysis of its dynamics (chart of DET vs. RR) allows to identify the two-phase flow patterns. This confirms that this type of analysis can be used to identify the two-phase flow patterns in minichannels.
