Opis:
While corpus linguistics has existed since the 1960s, Forensic Linguistics isa relatively new discipline, involving both linguistic evidence in court and wider applications of linguistics to legal texts and discourses. Computer corpora of natural language may be marked up in various ways, grammatically tagged, parsed, lemmatised and analysed with concordance, collocation and other specialist soft ware. In the relatively short history of forensic linguistics, its exponents have oft en employed corpus linguistics techniques in orderto throw light on questions like disputed authorship. However, the corpora employed have been general ones such as the Cobuild “Bank of English”, rather than purpose-built databases of language used in legal contexts, with the result that such research sometimes raises more questions than it answers. Conversely, corpus linguists have from time to time incorporateddata from legal settings into their collections; but they have tended to use these resources as the basis for sociolinguistic or historical linguistic research rather than as a means of exploring topics in language and law. This paper makes a plea for these two fi elds, which are both already cross-disciplinary, to join forces and create a purpose-built corpus for forensic linguistics. It illustrates how corpus techniques may be successfully applied to questions of disputed authorship, citing both hypothetical and actual examples. It ends with an outline of the kinds of texts which a proposed new corpus for Forensic Linguistics should contain and the tools required to exploit it eff ectively.

Linguistic plurality can be a source of anxiety to some nations especially because of those groups seeking for linguistic dominance at the expense of the rest of dialects to gain political and economic benefits. However, things can be exploited differently. Linguistic diversity can help in enriching the cultural heritage and highlighting the nation’s identity. To investigate this possibility, we track the Algerian policy towards the issue of linguistic diversity. This study aims at investigating language diversity and its impact on the social security and stability in Algeria. It also attempts to shed light on the Algerian political decisions to maintain social harmony via implementing effective language planning. Results reveal that the policy adopted by Algeria to manage linguistic differentiation through the recognition of all sorts of linguistic varieties and mainly the re-consideration of the Tamazight language as a national language besides Arabic is a wise decision made by policy makers to prevent external and internal attempts to stir up linguistic –based troubles. This compromise policy maintains the nation’s stability and its success is shown through the co-existence of Arabic with its different dialectical varieties, Berber languages, spoken by non-Arab groups besides French with its predominant position imposed by the linguistic imperialism inherited from the colonial period and English with its rising competitive status to French.

This paper aims to be sensitive to linguistic practices in describing different groups. In Algerian society, discrimination is exercised through these practices. Perhaps these practices used in fraught with cultural and political and religious assumptions and that what seems acceptable now may be offensive later. The main languages (Arabic, French, and Tamazight) are in violent confrontations. Tamazight as autochthone language was banned in public space for decades, till it becomes a public request. Arabic, closely linked with the Islamic religion, remains the official language. It is also regarded as a political language. French, as a colonial legacy, is considered as the language of social prestige. It remains used in different spaces. In this challenging coexistence, distinctions are legitimized, and inequalities are justified. The language becomes a symbol of discrimination and social segregation accordingly to the language. Other languages can interfere with the purpose to access to social promotion. The best way to understand and solve this problem is for different groups to learn as much as they can about one another, becoming more aware of the meaning and nuances naming and language and more conscious of the racial assumptions embedded in the language. Higher sensitivity to the language used in describing different group experiences is an essential step in promoting better intergroup relationships.

None of the hitherto proposed attempts at explaining the origin of the East-Slavonic numeral sorok ‘40’, is satisfactory. This refers almost equally to those propositions that derive it from Greek (F. Miklosich, A. Brückner, V. Jagić), Turkish (O.N. Trubačëv) or from Old Norse (M. Vasmer). The author of the current article puts forward a yet another solution, this time pointing to the Ugro-Finnic languages. As the basis of the borrowing, the Udmurt proto-form *śor-ku/*sor-ku is advanced, which was adapted to *sork > sorok on the East-Slavonic ground. A possible semantic evolution leads from ‘marten pelt(s)’ > ‘a bundle of pelts’ > ‘a bundle of pelts of forty pieces (as many as was needed to sew one fur-lined overcoat’ > ‘a numerical unit (measure) used in trade’ to ‘a stand-alone number 40’. The proposed etymology corresponds well with the context of Ugro-Finnic – East-Slavonic linguistic and extralinguistic contacts.

The so-called linguistic summaries of databases are the semi-natural language sentences that enable distilling the most relevant information from large numbers of tuples, and present it in the human consistent forms. Recently, the methods of constructing and evaluating linguistic summaries have been based on Zadeh's fuzzy sets, which represent uncertain data. The main aim of the paper is to enhance and generalize the Yager's approach to linguistic summarization of data. This enhancement is based on interval-valued fuzzy sets. The newly presented methods enable handling fuzzy concepts, whose membership degrees are not given by real values explicitly, but are approximated by intervals in [0,1]. From now on, the Yager's approach can be viewed as a special case of the method presented in this paper. Finally, illustrative examples are presented.

The aim of the paper consists in showing the relevance of ethos-based rhetorical strategies in a journalistic genre called Columns on language (CSLs) in the Spanish press. CSLs are authored by persons of recognized prestige who take position with regard to an issue, often related to correct language usage. The argumentative importance that the speaking subject reveals to have in these kinds of texts has actually led us to study the mechanisms able to construct his/her discursive image. These mechanisms, involved in shaping the author’s ethos, are supposed to raise the readers’ level of support. Four presentational columns belonging to different authors, years, and journals have been analyzed in order to explore the persuasive resources of ethos.

Daugavpils (Latvia) and Narva (Estonia) are cities in the Baltic States and signifi cant cultural and economic centres of their respective countries. These cities are characterized by a minority of nationals (19.8% of residents of Daugavpils are Latvian, 4% of residents of Narva are Estonian) and a similar linguistic situation: there is a dominance of Russian in the press, television and radio, but the state language prevails in the urban language signs. The aim of the study is to analyse the linguistic and extralinguistic means used for the creation of ergonyms of educational and cultural spheres. The main criteria for the analysis are: language choice, grammatical structures, sources of precedent and semantic groups. The data for this study were collected in city websites. Some conclusions: 1) Mixed proper names (the direct name and symbolical name) prevail: in Daugavpils there are more mixed names in the fi eld of education, while in Narva there are more mixed names in the culture sphere. Onymization of nomenclature names can be observed. 2) Ergonyms are mostly created in the offi cial language. In Narva, there is explicit use of Russian (directly as the fi rst/second or third language and indirectly – in transliteration). 3) In symbolical names, there are more lexemes representing or characterizing wildlife, while in Narva also the potential of mythology, literature and cinema is used. Denotative precedent is more often found in the names of informal educational institutions and the cultural sphere, connotative precedent – in the names of kindergartens. 4) In general, it must be concluded that the specifi c things characteristic to the local environment are used more often in Narva, while respecting the unique experience of minorities.

Linguistic Processes Determining
Opis:
The article aims at analyzing the principle which determines the acceptability and correctness of nominalizations performed upon sentences of the type: NP-Cop-AP. The discourse was initiated by Chomsky (1972), who demonstrated the fact that the correctness of TNOM>S established by processes taking place in SS, thus suggesting that the analysis of SS might shed light on the nature of the underlying DS processes. This view was lated supported by evidence coming from the analysis of the lexical features of NP and AP, carried out by Postal (1974). Thus discussion was initiated as to the role of 'the lexicalist hypothesis' and iexicalism' in sentence derivation. The author of the article discusses the validity of 'the lexicalist hypothesis', which maintains that lexical features alone can suffice for the explanation of the acceptability of TNOM applied to strings NP-Cop-AP. She claims that the resort to the lexical features needs to be made with respect to, as she calls them, elliptic structures, i. e. structures with shifted designations. In the search for the rule determining the correctness of TN0M, the author considers such principles as: Chomskean observation of its dependence upon the 'rough similarity' between SS and DS (Chomsky 1972), Postal's analysis of agentivity (Postal 1974), the role of the antecedent of the implied subject of the infinitive phrase (whenever it is contained in such structures) and, as she calls it, TNOM-over-TNOM principle. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the acceptability of TNOM CAN be assumed to be determined by the syntactic process. The author names it TNOM" over-TNOM constraint and analyzes it on the selected corpus of English and Polish sentences.

The paper discusses different linguistic means which help to express cultural stereotypes commonly held in societies. On the basis of the opinions, comments and observations of different scholars, the author of the article distinguishes items which are essential for linguistic reproduction of cultural (mental) stereotypes. In his account he demonstrates how closely stereotypes are linked with the linguistic signs in use. Although the paper examines the notion of stereotyping from a linguistic perspective, it also refers to the assumptions of the cognitive and cultural approaches to stereotyping.

Continuity or Discontinuity – the Case of Macedonian PhoneticsThe article presents its principal topic of the continuity of linguistic phenomena based on the material of Macedonian phonetics, treated as a constituent of south-east European phonetics, and not as an element of the Slavic world. It provides, firstly, a static perspective, produced by enumerating typologically relevant features. Seen from this perspective, Macedonian phonetics is a component of the Central Balkanic area. Secondly, emphasis has been put on processes of phonetic convergence and their differences from those of grammatical convergence. These difference account for the instability of phonetic features, or in any case their generally lesser stability compared to morphosyntactic features, but on the other hand also for the possibility for some phenomena to survive in small areas, in a few dialects, and the possibility for linguistic features to reappear, which stems from alternating cross-dialectal interference. The Macedonian language territory abounds in such situations due to its multi-ethnicity, which is greater here than anywhere else in the Balkans. Particular in this respect is the area of Aegean Macedonia, where Slavic dialects are “protected” from the influence of the literary norm – albeit in the case of Macedonian even the realisation of the literary norm is not entirely stable in terms of phonetics.

In his study, the author discusses his hypothesis of money as a linguistic form, one understood sensu stricto, as Ferdinand de Saussure would. This approach seems to be the key to explaining some important phenomena: the so-called ‘economics imperialism’ in the social sciences and the specific character of economic language, as seen from the perspective of the humanities. Both the ‘uncanny character’ of economic terms and ‘economics imperialism’ appear in this text as symptoms, or ways in which economic signs, especially money understood as a sign, specifically manifest themselves. The logical analysis of the construction of these signs-analysis based on Saussure’s and Simmel’s propositions-is the main topic of this article. First, the author revisits a well-known parallel between formal structures of linguistic and monetary signs developed in Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics. Second, a crucial difference in these structures is presented and theoretically explained using tools developed by Georg Simmel. The author goes on to consider whether this difference locates the monetary sign outside the realm of language per se. Finally, by applying certain claims made by Ludwig Wittgenstein on the limits of language, the author develops his hypothesis that money is a linguistic sign, but a specific one; it is a kind of a ‘border phenomenon.’ In this text, the author proposes the term ‘linguistic form’ to distinguish this kind of sign. Some theoretical and social consequences of this state of affairs are proposed; inter alia the immanent social antagonism between the symbolic articulation of the social sphere and the economic one.

This study addresses the different types and implications of linguistic indeterminacy in Chinese law. It firstly draws on the studies of scholars of different disciplines, such as linguistics and philosophy of language, to provide a taxonomy of indeterminacy in language. It then provides examples of each type, highlighting the implications in law and legal interpretation. It uses linguistic data from various texts, such as statutory laws and judgements, and analyse them with various methods, including discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. This study argues that when the language of the law is indeterminate, the legal outcomes may be particularly uncertain. It suggests that although it is difficult to ascertain whether the degree of indeterminacy is higher in some languages more than in others, some linguistic mechanisms at the word-formation level in Chinese are remarkably ambiguous. When uncertain terms are in key parts of the law, the consequences may be more serious. The study of linguistic indeterminacy in Chinese has implications for the study of forensic linguistics, and Chinese studies in general.

Contrastive linguistics and cultureThe Dictionary of Active Polish and Ukrainian Phraseology [Leksykon aktywnej frazeologii polskiej i ukraińskiej] is the first publication of its kind in the history of Polish and Ukrainian lexicography. It consists of equivalent phrasal units in Polish and Ukrainian. The innovative aspect of the lexicon is that it uses a semantic metalanguage to establish equivalent units. The authors developed a new method of searching for equivalent units which uses the meaning - not the form - as the starting point. This method enables the identification of equivalent units in both languages. Moreover, it enables the identification of units that do not have equivalents. The units which lack equivalents are usually deeply rooted in Poland’s or Ukraine’s historical and cultural context, and are thus defined as culturemes. Even though they lack equivalents, it was decided not to exclude them from the Leksykon’s structure, as they are actively used by the speakers of Polish and Ukrainian. This paper provides an overview of the Leksykon’s methodology and presents the authors’ definition of phraseologism. The most important points in the paper are illustrated with a number of example entries from the dictionary. The primary focus of the paper rests on phrasal units which lack equivalents. O Leksykonie aktywnej frazeologii polskiej i ukraińskiej. We present a framework of L-fuzzy modifiers for L being a complete lattice. They are used to model linguistic hedges that act on linguistic terms represented by L-fuzzy sets. In the modelling process the context is taken into account by means of L-fuzzy relations, endowing the L-fuzzy modifiers with a clear inherent semantics. To our knowledge, these L-fuzzy modifiers are the first ones proposed that are suitable to perform this representation task for a lattice L different from the unit interval. In the latter case they undoubtedly outperform the traditional representations, such as powering and shifting hedges, from the semantical point of view.

The aim of this paper is to examine the didactic value of the Attic Nights from the linguistic point of view, and precisely, from the point of view of Gellius’ teachings on the meanings of words. In this context it has been stated that the author makes his readers aware of new meanings gained by certain words when used in contemporary colloquial idiom, describes and interprets the mechanism which had generated those meanings, evaluates the results of the process of semantic change, and, finally, comments on the way some grammarians assess the usage of certain words in ancient literary texts. In effect, the paper concentrates on the passages where A. Gellius, referring to ancient (archaic and classical) literature, describes the semantic differences occurring in various words, depending on their usage, whether in literary or colloquial language, defines the linguistic mechanism giving rise to colloquial variants of different linguistic items, and presents in a critical light the influence of colloquial language on the way in which interpretation is made of particular words as they occur in literary texts.
