Opis:
Zaproponowano sposób obliczeniowego oszacowania wpływu zużycia narzędzi skrawających na intensywność zużywania korozyjnego warstwy wierzchniej materiału obrabianego. Cechą charakterystyczną podejścia jest ocena stopnia zużycia korozyjnego w zależności od zużycia narzędzia, parametrów chropowatości powierzchni przedmiotu obrabianego i stopnia utwardzania warstwy wierzchniej na zimno, a także parametrów warunków obróbki technologicznej (parametrów skrawania, geometrii narzędzia skrawającego, właściwości obrabianego materiału i narzędzia).
A possible variant for calculated estimation of the degree of the impact of the cutting tool wear on the value of the part’s surface layer wear obtained during processing with the edge tool, due to atmospheric corrosion, is presented. The feature is the evaluation of the wear rate and its numerical value depending on the tool wear, roughness parameters of the work piece surface, and the degree of cold hardening of the surface layer, as well as parameters of the technological machining conditions (cutting conditions, geometry of the tool cutting part, properties of the machined and the tool materials).

The paper discusses the results of investigations of material, tribological and anti-corrosion properties of hybrid coatings of the Cr/CrN type, consisting of chromium and chromium nitride, formed on the surface of alloy tool steel by the Arc-PVD method. Investigations of the morphology and microstructure of hybrid coatings, as well as of their phase composition were carried out. The studies on mechanical properties included tests on hardness and Young’s modulus using the nanoindentation method. Tests on adhesion were conducted using the scratch-test method. Tribological properties of the obtained coatings were evaluated by the pin-on-disc method. Resistance to corrosion was determined by electrochemical methods. It was shown that hybrid coatings of the Cr/CrN type are characterized by good adhesion to the substrate and very good tribological properties, as well as by very good resistance to corrosion in a solution containing chlorine ions.

Opis:
The development of modern invasive surgery is highly dependent on the performance of surgical instruments, understood as long-term efficiency arising from high resistance to wear and corrosion. In order to maintain sufficient reliability, surgical cutting instruments are often made of martensitic stainless steels. Nevertheless, the use of ferrous alloys in medical applications is still a concern due to their questionable corrosion and wear resistance. To extend their bioconipatibility, improve stability in variable environmental conditions, improve ease of handling, and maximize their performance, diffusion layers and coatings are applied to the surface. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of TiN and diamond-like carbon (DLC) surface modification on the performance of surgical drill bits, that is. wear and corrosion resistance, measured in model and field tests. Based on the findings presented, DLC layers can be recommended as anti-wear and anti-corrosion coatings for surgical drill bits.

Opis:
Titanium and its alloys are one of the most popular metallic materials used in medicine for many years. Their favorable mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance and good biotolerance in an environment of tissues and body fluids, cause that they are widely used as construction material of orthopaedic dental and neurological implants. Their disadvantages are poor tribological properties manifested by high coefficient of friction, scuffing and tendency to formation of adhesive couplings. In many research centers the works on improving the unfavorable tribological properties of titanium alloys are conducted. They rely on the use of modern methods of surface treatment including the thermo-chemical methods (nitriding, carburizing, oxidation) and the synthesis of thin films using PVD and CVD methods. In the presented work the glow discharge oxidation was applied to improve the surface properties of two-phase Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb titanium alloys. The results include a description of the obtained structure of the surface layer, surface topography, micro-hardness, wear ratio and corrosion resistance. The obtained results indicate changes in the surface layer of the material. The surface hardness was more than doubled and the depth of increased hardness region was up to 85 microns. This, in turn, several times decreased the wear rate of the modified materials while reducing the wear rate of the countersample. At the same time the carried out thermo-chemical treatment did not cause any structural changes in the core material. The oxidation process preferably influenced the corrosion properties of titanium alloys. Both, significant increase in the corrosion potential (approx. 0.36 V), as well as increased polarization resistance were observed. The modified surfaces also retained a high resistance to pitting corrosion.

Opis:
Commercially pure titanium is less expensive, generally more corrosion resistant and lower in strength than its alloys, and is not heat-treatable. The use of Ti and its alloys as construction materials under severe friction and wear conditions is limited due to their poor tribological properties. Nevertheless, proper addition of hard ceramic particles into Ti and its alloys has proved to be an efficient way to enhance their mechanical and wear properties. Our purpose in this work was to analyze the corrosion, tribocorrosion, mechanical and morphological effects of combining titanium carbide with titanium metal, to create a unique composite via spark plasma sintering technique (SPS). Composites with different mass percentage (1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt %) of ceramic phase were produced. The samples of pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were also tested, as a reference. These composites were examined for mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in an environment similar to the human body (Ringer’s solution). Open circuit potential (OPC) and anodic polarization measurements were performed. The properties of titanium composites reinforced with micro- and nanocrystalline TiC powders were compared. It was stated that wear properties were significantly improved with increasing amount of TiC in matrix, especially in the case of nanocrystalline reinforcement. In terms of corrosion resistance, the composites showed slightly worse properties compared to pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

This work aims at physico-mechanical properties of the Ti-containing chromium-free conversion coatings on zinc coated steel. The wear resistance of the whole conversion coating/zinc coating system depends on the deposition time of these coatings. As the duration of the deposition of conversion coatings containing titanium increases, the wear resistance of the samples decreases. The reason for this deterioration in wear resistance is likely worse adhesion of these coatings obtained at longer deposition times. The best adhesion to the zinc substrate posses coatings deposited for 20 s.

Opis:
Co-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys are widely used in dental implants production. However, there is a risk connected with application of this kind of materials like allergy and methalosis caused by Cr, Ni ions, very dangerous for patients’ health and life. Moreover metal ions released into human body can affect inflammation of the surrounding tissue. Biomaterials’ surface treatment by the deposition of diamond-like carbon films can noticeably improve the corrosion and mechanical features. Widely discussed in world’s literature problems with adhesion of DLC layers can be solved by the deposition of gradient a-C:H/Ti layer. Due to that, it is possible to manufacture thick and well adherent carbon layer on the implant’s surface which will constitute a very good protection against wear and corrosion. Our goal was to evaluate the mechanical properties of a-C:H/Ti layers deposited on CoCr and NiCr alloys in hybrid deposition system RF PACVD/MSand to find the influence of layer thickness on the selected properties. As the result of the investigation it was noticed that deposition of a-C:H/Ti layer improves the mechanical properties of CoCr and NiCr alloys. High hardness and good adhesion of gradient carbon layers makes them a very perspective material for this kind of applications.

This work investigates the distribution and the effect of synthesized nano TiO2, micro SiC and B4C particle on the aluminium (A356) metal matrix composites (AMMC). The consequences of this reinforcement on the mechanical, tribology and corrosion behaviour of the AMMC matrix are analyzed. The nano TiO2 is synthesized by wet chemistry sol-gel process, and the reinforcements are added with A-356 by stir casting method. The ASTM standard test specimens are characterized through mechanical, tribology, and corrosion tests for identifying their properties. The metallurgical characterization has been deliberated through XRD and SEM with EDS. in the tensile test results, the percentage of elongation is dropped drastically by 73% due to the enhanced volume % of nano TiO2, micro SiC, and B4C particles. The particle addition of the wear rate and weight loss are reduced at different volume percentages of the A356 matrix. The time plays a significant role in the corrosion rate. The test results also confirm that the corrosion rate is comparatively minimum in 24 hrs (592.35 mm/yr) duration than the 48 hrs (646.368 mm/yr) in both the solutions.

Spark plasma sintering method (SPS) was applied for the purpose of producing these materials. In order to avoid the decomposition of SiC surface, SiC powder was coated with a thin tungsten layer using plasma vapour deposition (PVD) method. The obtained results were analysed by the effect of the corrosion and thermal shocks on materials density, hardness, bending strength, tribological and thermal properties. Qualitative X-ray analysis and observation of microstructure of sample surfaces after corrosion tests and thermal shocks were also conducted. The use of PVD technique allows us to obtain an evenly distributed layer of titanium with a constant thickness of 1.5 µm. It was found that adverse environmental conditions and increased temperature result in a change in the material behaviour in wear tests.
