It is stated both by Tischner and his scholars that he follows the footsteps of Hegel. Yet thus far no one – including Tischner himself – was talking about exactly this aspect of Tischner’s thought that is antiHegelian. The best way to do that is to address the issue of truth. Tischner’s theory of truth is antiHegelian because Tischner puts emphasize on the word “feeling”, while at the same time describing his distrust for ontology, which leads him to two things: he thinks about truth first and foremost as a kind of value which is not privileged among other values, and he thinks too little about society. So it is anti-Hegelian because it denies the requirement of Hegel’s science as being the true knowledge of spirit about spirit. In order to understand more from Tischner’s philosophy independently of the issue of Hegel’s philosophy, one should take into consideration Tischner’s theory of evil.

The subject of the article is a role of metaphor in Józef Tischner’s philosophy. In late seventies he shaped an idea of „thinking within metaphor”, which was an essential modification of phenomenological method Tischner used before. Metaphorizing is not only an unliterally language expression, but also the metaphysical statement, that the world an human experience cannot be described in strict concepts. Metaphors and symbols have their own logic and hermeneutics, which shows their inner tensions. I proposed a new approach to Tischner philosophy, which allows unveil this „life of metaphor”.

Honor is one of the values permanently inscribed in the traditional ethos of the Polish culture. In the past centuries, it was a feature distinguishing only one social class – the nobility. However, as a result of cultural changes, the concept of honor was democratized, thus entering the universal system of values, shaping the entire social structure. The above notwithstanding, the understanding of this concept had not become homogenized in the process. Even today, one can still observe the concurrence of different styles of thinking about honor, manifest in a variety of coexisting patterns of honorable behavior and particular attitudes to honor, whose respective uniqueness depends on socio-cultural contexts. It is, therefore, possible to speak of the honor of peasants or Highlanders, or of the honor of an oppositionist or an intellectual, and it stands to reason that in each case the sense of the concept will prove to be slightly different. In this text, the author presents the results of an analysis of the ways in which honor is understood by Józef Tischner and Leszek Kołakowski – two Polish thinkers who played important roles in the intellectual life of Poland in the second half of the twentieth century. These considerations are further complemented by a reflection on one of the leading activists of the democratic opposition in the final years of the Polish People’s Republic, an influential writer, journalist, editor, author of Z dziejów honoru w Polsce. Wypisy więzienne [From the History of Honor in Poland. Prison Notes] and numerous other books – Adam Michnik. An insight into his views on honor, and the reflection on the stance he adopted, combined with the analysis of Tischner’s position, allows the author to reconstruct Leszek Kołakowski’s ideal of honor, whose currency transgresses time.

Since its beginnings, philosophy has been associated with a critical quest for answers and has rejected biased and uncritical a priori interpretations. Methodic doubt has thus become not only the ever-present method of philosophy, but also a symbol of defiance against every kind of closed-minded and ideological thinking that has a tendency to simplify explanations and adapt reality to its own projections about the said reality. This type of thinking has always been linked to truth claims made by individual power entities. In the past, we have witnessed twists and abuses of ideology with far-reaching political consequences and yet the problem still persists. Each and every situation affected by crisis is a breeding ground for quick, clear and black and white explanations which attract attention and gain support, since they are generally easy to comprehend. This paper introduces a philosophical context of ideological thinking, in which the “will to power” is typical, as reflected upon by many thinkers, among them Józef Tischner who draws from his personal experience with the Communist regime in Poland.

This article examines one of the greatest contributions of Józef Tischner to the area of anthropology and charitology by analyzing, in a systematical way, his original thought regarding the relationship between the pagan concept of fate (fatum) and the Christian concept of grace (charis). The originality of this contribution concerns three main areas. The first one concerns the historical-charitological aspect in which Tischner proposes a new approach which helps him to emphasize the personalistic aspect of grace. Instead of considering the problem form a typical intra-Christian perspective, he approaches the concept of grace by confronting it with the historical, pagan concept of impersonal fate. Secondly, he brings to the light an ancient Greek idea of the aesthetic overcoming of the tragic defeat caused by fate, and by showing its insufficiency, he discovers and demonstrates the depth, beauty and hidden ultimate power of the aesthetic dimension of Christian grace. Finally, he argues that the problem of the relationship between fate and grace is not an issue of the ancient past, but constitutes the core of one of the greatest contemporary challenges faced by modern Christian society: the ever growing wave of neopaganism.

Here we meet man as The Other and not as Another, an alien. Where do we encounter him? On the road, at the inn. What is needed? Setting a primal distance and entering into relation, in Martin Buber’s terms, or a dialogical opening and personification, entering into language or speech, according to Józef Tischner. Artykuł poświęcony jest badaniom z zakresu fenomenologii społecznej ks. Józefa Tischnera (1931-2000), w których to jednym z najistotniejszych zagadnień jest Etyka solidarności, rozumiana tu jako Etyka sumień. Podstawowym założeniem tekstu było uznanie projektu Etyki solidarności jako źródłowo zaangażowanego społecznie, a także pedagogicznie. Co za tym idzie, celem najistotniejszym jest tu ujawnienie wewnętrznego potencjału powyższej propozycji dla analiz z zakresu pedagogiki ogólnej i społecznej. W roku 2021 minęła 90-ta rocznica urodzin Autora oraz 40-ta rocznica pierwszego wydania Etyki solidarności (1981), co stało się to dobrą okazją do rekonstrukcji podstawowych tez omawianego projektu, ale również próbą wskazania potencjału edukacyjnego, przy szczególnym uwzględnieniu problematyki społecznej w dobie wyzwań postawionych przed społeczeństwem demokratycznym w XXI wieku w Polsce i Europie.
The article is devoted to research in the field of social phenomenology of Fr. Józef Tischner (1931-2000), in which one of the most important issues is the Ethics of Solidarity, understood as the Ethics of Conscience. The basic premise of the text was to recognize the project of the Ethics of Solidarity as socially and pedagogically engaged in its source. Consequently, the most important goal here is to reveal the internal potential of the above proposal for analyzes in the field of general and social pedagogy. In 2021 it was the 90th anniversary of the author's birth and the 40th anniversary of the first edition of the Ethics of Solidarity (1981), it was a good opportunity to reconstruct the basic theses of the project, but also an attempt to indicate the educational potential, with particular emphasis on social issues in the time of challenges faced by a democratic society in the 21st century in Poland and Europe.

The present text addresses one of the stages of the controversy over grace and freedom originated by Pelagius and Saint Augustine. The protagonists of this stage are Leszek Kołakowski and Józef Tischner. As he was reconstructing the 17th-century debates between Jansenists and Molinists, Kołakowski posed a question about the relevance in: of this controversy for the contemporary times. Tischner, as he was critical of Kołakowski’s views, put forward his own solution to the problem of grace and freedom, which was in line with the thought of Saint Augustine. In the present text I place Tischner’s dispute with Kołakowski against the backdrop of earlier stages of the controversy, and I discuss the views held by both the thinkers. I also attempt to resolve this dispute and point to its significance for the philosophy of education and the philosophy of politics.

The article proposes some form of practising philosophy and itsrelated issues as an innovative analysis in the field of human relations. It presents an original proposal by Tischner who analyses ethical values interms of good. These considerations constituting the core of the article present a brief discussion of the concept of traditional values, e.g. Scheler's. Tischner's innovation lies in the recognition that the proper access to the world of values should be sought through multi-faceted analysis of the relationships. Such an approach seems to significantly deepen the discussion of the concept of value andexposes their ethics.
W artykule zaproponowano pewne formy uprawiania filozofii i podejmowane przez nią zagadnienia jako innowacyjne w dziedzinie analiz relacji międzyludzkich. Przedstawiono oryginalną propozycję etyczną Józefa Tischnera analizującego wartości w perspektywie dobra. Rozważania te, stanowiące jądro artykułu, prezentują krótkie omówienia tradycyjnych koncepcji wartości, między innymi Schelera. Innowacyjność ujęcia Tischnera polega na tym, że właściwego dostępu do świata wartości poszukuje on poprzez wieloaspektową analizę relacji międzyludzkich. Takie podejście zdaje się istotnie pogłębiać rozważania pojęcia wartości i eksponuje ich etyczność.

Celem artykułu jest zrekonstruowanie procesu przejścia od fenomenologicznego (transcendentalnego) rozumienia „ja” do jego wykładni aksjologicznej. Chodzi tu o rekonstrukcję drogi rozwoju myśli Józefa Tischnera. W rezultacie rozwoju fenomenologicznych analiz Tischnera, w których świetle ewoluuje również jego myśl, „ja” transcendentalne zostaje scharakteryzowane jako „ja” aksjologiczne. W ramach analiz podejmowanych przez autora Ja transcendentalnegow filozofii Edmunda Husserla można dopatrzyć się przeniesienia akcentu z transcendentalnego na aksjologiczny. Twórcze wykorzystanie otwartości filozofii Husserla prowadzi Tischnera poza ramy klasycznej fenomenologii. Spojrzenie na twórczość Tischnera przez pryzmat pierwotnej inspiracji, jaką jest fenomenologia, umożliwia ukazanie rzetelnego obrazu myśli polskiego filozofa.

In my article I wanted to analyze the comunication from the moral point of view. My ground to think about morality is Karol Wojtyła and Józef Tischner’s thinking. I proposed the thesis that because of hard experiences of war and totalitarian system in the 20th century; because of nihilism and wrong understanding of human freedom; and because of media culture and a lack of authentic relationships between people; interpersonal communication is superficial and empty. In order to make communication creative and human, in order to restore its first meaning and lost deepness, I believe it is necessary to see the moral dimension of communication and redefine its fundamental structure from the point of view of the philosophy of the person. Thus, I asked the questions: Who communicates? What does one communicate for? What is the message? They lead to considering the act of communication in its fundamental structure.
W ramach artykułu analizuję komunikację z moralnego punktu widzenia. Fundamentem tych analiz jest filozofia Karola Wojtyły oraz Józefa Tischnera. W swojej refeksji proponuję założenie, że dwudziestowieczne doświadczenia wojny oraz totalitarnych systemów, w konsekwencji trudności w przeżywaniu wartości czy własnej wolności, a także wpływ mediów na kulturę czy brak autentycznych relacji międzyosobowych to przyczyny sztuczności i pustki komunikacj międzyosobowej. Aby przywrócić jej ludzkie i twórcze znaczenie, a także by znaleźć jej utracony wymiar, trzeba zauważyć jej moralny fundament i ponownie zdefiniować jej struktury z puntku widzenia filozofii osoby. Dlatego w ramach swojego artykułu zadałam pytania: Kto komunikuje? Dlaczego komunikuje? Czym jest komunikat? Uważam, że pytania te poprowadzą mnie do rozważenia komunikacji w jej najbardziej podstawowych strukturach.

An important trend in Tischner’s philosophical output was the observation of the phenomena that would occur in the current social life of Poles. The trend gained particular significance at the turn of the 1970s and the 1980s, when the processes that finally led to the systemic transformation began. During this period, Tischner made a successful attempt to reconstruct the Polish social ethos. It turned out that its integral element is the presence of utopian projects to rebuild the social order in the country. Tischner stated in his analyses that these utopias play a constructive role in the social life because they motivate people to engage in the political struggle for deep system reforms. The article presents the content of Tischner’s reconstruction of Polish utopias from the 1970s and the 1980s and the correlation between social ethics, ideological discussions, and political practice of the declining period of the Polish People’s Republic.
Ważnym nurtem w dorobku filozoficznym Tischnera była obserwacja zjawisk występujących w bieżącym życiu społecznym Polaków. Nurt ten nabrał szczególnego znaczenia na przełomie lat siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych XX wieku, gdy rozpoczęły się procesy, które finalnie doprowadziły do transformacji ustrojowej. W tym okresie Tischner podjął udaną próbę zrekonstruowania polskiego ethosu społecznego. Okazało się, że jego integralnym elementem jest obecność utopijnych projektów przebudowy ładu społecznego w kraju. Tischner stwierdził w swych analizach, że utopie te pełnią konstruktywną rolę w życiu społecznym, ponieważ dostarczają ludziom motywacji do zaangażowania w polityczną walkę o głębokie reformy ustrojowe. Artykuł prezentuje treść Tischnerowskiej rekonstrukcji polskich utopii z lat 70./80. oraz korelację między etyką społeczną, dyskusjami światopoglądowymi oraz praktyką polityczną schyłkowego okresu PRL.

The article examines the paradoxicality of the notion of freedom in the theodramatic approach of Hans Urs von Balthasar. The main subject concerns the paradox of finite and infinite freedom and their relationship described in the second volume of Theo-Drama. The thought of the Swiss theologian is compared with the reflections of Henri de Lubac and Józef Tischner. The confrontation of their approaches in the context of the chosen topic made it possible to apply a new research method. Instead of the dialectical method, typically used in this context, a method concentrated on identifying the paradox and exploring the mystery behind it has been applied. This approach has led to a deeper understanding of the key role of the dynamical nature of finite freedom and has indicated the importance of proper identification of its source. It has allowed also displaying the inalienable nature of the Christological dimension to understand correctly the concept of infinite freedom and the most important feature of its essence. Finally, it has also helped to gain an in-depth insight into the conditions regarding the possibility of a genuine, though not symmetrical, relationship between the two freedoms.

The article examines the question of the Mariological interpretation of the eight beatitudes contained in Matt 5:3–10. Christian theologians of all ages, from Clement of Alexandria to the authors of contemporary biblical commentaries, have proposed various interpretations of this biblical text. Among the multitude of interpretations developed throughout history, the Mariological aspect appears quite rarely. Yet, as Pope Benedict XVI observes, the very biblical Marian title “Blessed” should direct the theological thought to the Mariological aspects of this issue. In modern times, a very deep reflection on the subject was conducted by two great theologians of the XX century, J. Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) and H.U. von Balthasar. On the Polish ground, the task was partly undertaken by J. Tischner, who elaborated the theme of eight beatitudes in the key of the Marian pilgrimage of the nation. The present work is meant to deepen the Mariological-biblical analysis of the eight beatitudes and revive the discussion regarding this subject in the perspective proposed by Benedict XVI, to understand the beatitudes as a program of life for a modern Christian.

Reverend Józef Tischner was undoubtedly one of the most outstanding Polish philosophers of the second half of the twentieth century. What we owe to this student of Roman Ingarden is the flourishing of phenomenology and the philosophy of dialog not only in our domestic philosophical, but also sociological, psychological, and anthropological thought. His philosophy of drama is an original and very important current, which is enriched not only by the “Queen of the Sciences” but also offers great support to the related sciences, particularly sociological sciences. Within them, subjectivity is an extremely important subject of contemplation. This article is a sketch of the analysis of the benefits that a sociologist, researcher of subjectivity, can derive from reading Józef Tischner’s works.
